>What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.

Read Cartooning Self-Taught by Bill Nolan if you want to do rubberhose right. The Preston Blair book is also really helpful.

If you don't want to do rubberhose right, just do another style because fake rubberhose is obnoxious as fuck.

I like the collarbones and up. The breasts are extremely bad. The angle of the pelvis and the connection to the legs is off. The line that is supposed to show the back of her ribcage isn't there so it's like her hips are starting out from her breasts.

This almost looks neat but you gave him weird short arms and stiff unmatching legs. If we cut off his legs and arms it would be a solid drawing.

I don't have my tablet hooked up and i'm too lazy to set it up, but here's the gist of some things to work on: perspective, overall proportion, roundness of limbs. Hope this helps.
>>
>>3471135
>>3471147

Forgot to mention that I can tell you prefer drawing faces over the form. Is your sketchbook full of faces from the bust or even neck up? Cut it out. It shows in your drawing. The face is very solid and shows a definite style, but it's obvious you're drawing the full form maybe 10% of the time. Post others?

not that artist, but i don't see what you're saying. the breasts are stylized, and not great, but not the worst for the style. the angle of the pelvis is plausible, but the pelvis itself is too long and low on the right figure.

i swear, people just make up shit to nitpick on anatomy. and this is coming from someone who studies anatomy obsessively.

>>
>>3471173

gotcha. i'm not sure whether you're going for gesture or construction with these but my advice for construction is to try and draw the shapes of the things you're seeing. arms and legs are sets of connecting cylinders. feet and hands are flat boxes. head is a long sphere. you get the idea. everything is made of shapes. they are your building blocks. use them to construct your figure then go in for the detail work. i think you will see an immediate improvement in drawings like the one you posted!
>>
>>3471132
Thanks for the tips! <3 I'll use more caution with the breasts and the general torso anat.
>>
>>3471171
Why do you try to come off as pretentious when someone is helping someone else.
I was talking about the lack of this line, as in the back of the ribcage, like I said. His waist started at his breast instead of where it should be. I wasn't talking about the right figure at all.
The anti-crabs are even worse than the crabs.

it's a figure of speech dude post wherever you think you fit. you have the same issues as >>3471135 where you're spending an inordinate amount of time on the face and not enough on the body. your faces are /drawthread/ but your figures are /beg/. see >>3471177 attached pic for examples of construction and you'll be on your way in no time, wait and see

How do you guys pick a direction you want to take your style in? Do you pick an artist to mimic for a while or do you have some method you follow when experimenting?
>>
>>3471040
First I've seen someone suggest this. While for that cartoony style I suppose an even thickness would suit it better, isn't line weight usually used to make things pop and not feel flat?

>>3471457
Yeah, but it's clear that they have little control of the line weight, especially where it tapers at the ends. It's pretty difficult to achieve good line weight with that kind of brush setting, and if you want to make something taper off like that, then you're better off just erasing parts of the lineart instead of having to deal with a brush that goes to 0% minimum size.

Pic kinda related but I don't have any western stuff saved.

I don't see how either of them spent too much time on the face, especially the D&D char. I agree the body have a lot of issues, but the face looks rough and quickly done to me.
It sounds like you're just using a generic stock advice and applying it to any drawings that have any kind issues without regards to whether or not the advice actually fits the particular case.

This is the type of response I'd expect from someone with very few practice hours under their belt and no classical training. When you have more experience you'll be able to recognize the skill of artists even from their rough drawings/sketches. It's easy to tell when someone is comfortable whipping up a face (confident lines, placement is solid, style present) but has an obvious issue with anatomy (chicken scratch, one leg is bigger/longer than the other, poorly stylized feet that don't match the rest of the drawing and are simple because artist is not confident).
>>
>>3471450

Study construction and shapes. Colors make my eyes hurt - try using premade palettes until you understand harmony better.

>>3471541
I still don't see it? Lines are chicken scratched, inconfident, features are misplaced, it looks like he barely spent any time on it. Again, I agree the body have lots of issues, but that's not caused by spending too much time on the face. Don't just give me a "You'll understand once you grow up sonny" type of gut reaction, and actually elaborate on your argument.
>>
>>3471557

If you can't tell the difference between skilled fast/rough drawing and amateur scribbles, you need to train your eye. Not saying that anon is skilled, but there's a clear difference in their execution and confidence re: face vs everything else. Don't know what else to tell you; they confirmed as much.
>>
>>3471557
>>3471563

I'll add that the fact you think that the features are misplaced shows that you don't have a firm grasp yourself. They're pretty damn accurate.

Show me a redline of how you think they should look.
>>
>>3471549
I was afraid the colors i chose werent that great.
Ill just choose a similiar pallette but they wont be as offensive
>>
>>3471557
Not that anon but you also seem to be mixing up the idea of having spent more time drawing heads and faces than bodies with the idea that more time was spent drawing that face than the body. You're thinking the latter while anon means the former.
>>
>>3471582

There's no shame in using premade palettes as long as you're studying and learning from them. But yeah...highlighter orange and earthy green particularly clash. You can get the contrast you want without burning your retinas.

Oh is that what's he's on about? I didn't even realize he was confused lol.

Yeah anon I don't mean that DnD anon spent more time on the face in this drawing. I mean, in general, they spend more time drawing faces than bodies so there's a visible preference in their art. Does that make sense?

you also didn't give her a ribcage...
look, the artist's drawing was stylized and plausible. bodies are highly variable, from fat mass down to the skeletal proportions. outside of the bitter world of /ic, no one would be shitting on the anatomy of that intentionally cartoony drawing.
>>
>>3471187
i mean, i never argued with the ribcage thing. but that relates to the broader stylistic choice. no one has complained about the girl lacking a nose...but missing contour of ribcage = back to /beg.
>>
>>3471603

You have no idea what you're talking about. Even the most highly stylized competent drawings have roots in realism, and for sexy art, realism adds a level of sensuality and plausibility.

>"Art" Feels threads
We can speculate that the threads from the Tumblr/Blog posts causes a clear contingent of normies (for a lack of better term) flocking in and immediately treat /ic/ as their Twitter account by refuting a critique with their feelings. In other words, unless you sugar coat and give praise and adoration to their posted material you will find that the poster would quickly become defensive and escalate to an argument over their feelings. Moreover we have these same normies that actually complain if they do not receive a (you) from posting work as if its an upboat or a like and feel entitled to attention as if this is their Fagbook wall or something. Aside from putting fee-fee's first and getting butthurt we also have these other general threads with their own communities that differ the modus operandi of the board by eliminating critiques all together and encourage the hugbox environment by posting an OC and having others redraw it "in their own style" which in turn becomes a glorified Deviant Art forum blog.

The evidence of the hugbox environment is clear when you see material such as >>3471491 with the OP feeling proud about it to the point they post it proclaiming their pride and glee. If you observe those tumblr/blog and
"redraw this" threads you will find that many are confined to those general threads and maybe once in a blue moon they will stray away after receiving multiple asspats as if they think they're good enough to post outside of their safespaces and the result is >>3471491 hence why I said you faggots reap what you sow for encouraging these micro communities mentioned above.

There's been several arguments in the past that these forms of unconditional praises and adoration only inhibits one from further developing good draftsmanship and leaves one oblivious to their faults which leads me to believe that these so called "Crabs" are a necessity.

Do you not understand the difference between a a straight line and a curved one? The straight line is an oversimplification of the ribcage and waist, which is what you're criticizing the artist for. I drew in the ribcage's contour, which is what you should've done. Yeah it's nitpicky, but you were the one that started nitpicking about the fucking ribcage. I'm just beating you at your own game.

You try copying your favorite artist? Boxes help with perspective and loomis heads help with drawing heads from imagination and the mechanics of how a head works, measurements and spacial relation of each facial feature. If you have a favorite animu artist try to copy what they drew and try to accurately copy each line and "line weight" of what youre copying. Accurately measuring and copying will help you get a jist of how to replicate their "style." One of loomis' books says its fine to copy your favorite cartoon and painting as long as you make the effort to understand what youre doing

I was drawing torsos from imagination but they're pretty crap, I don't really know them well enough. I construct story based on scenes and interactions that I would like to draw and work backwards.

I was imagining a scene where she unexpectedly lost her power, and wriggling out of her armor while a mundane boy snark at her with reasoning similar to yours. Then, the boy help her, with some difficulty, carries her equipment to some place safe, and she is moved. It was someone whom she had been protecting for a short while, but now situation is kind of reversed. I don't know, I just wanted to work in that romance in there. Magic is ubiquitous in her background, but she was put in a situation where it isn't.

What's the benefit of painting on the same layers? I see some artists do this and some don't.
>>
>>3473835
huh? rephrase what youre asking. layers are ment to be use as layers nothing more.
>>
>>3473670
You have a nice rendering technique but you really need to improve how you convey form.

As for the piece...I think it look like your usual girl trying to cosplay Rei which isn’t a really good way to do fan art imho.
>>
>>3473845
Clipping every parts of the character and paint them seperately by layers.
VS
Color every parts all on 1 layer without using clipping.
>>
>>3473852
when you say clipping im assuming youre talking about clipping masks which, involve 2 layers on a single area. which is sparingly used. painting everything separately has its own uses(like animating with spine), otherwise you dont need to go further than having your main subjects on different layers aka background foreground middleground. you can just use your lasso tool/other selections to control your areas on a single layer.
>>
>>3473852
I'd say it depends on needs and preferences. For instance if you were coloring a picture of someone wearing something semi transparent like stockings or sunglasses maybe, it would be very useful to have the color of their skin and eyes on one layer and the color of the transparent material on another one so you could change the transparency of that layer and make it see-through without affecting what's below. Other times it just helps with precision. Once I was coloring a picture of Ryuko Matoi and since her hair and armor were all the same base color and overlapped it was hard to select just the specific parts I wanted to work on to be able to render them individually. I used another method, but that was an instance where I could have put her hair and armor on separate layers for ease of access. All roads lead to Rome, it really comes down to how you want to get there.
>>
>>3473403
Why would you even start rendering this? Even you can realize yourself that an arm is off. You've just thrown 8 hours of your life away literally trying to polish a turd.

Hopefully you can learn from this terrible mistake and create actual quality linework before you even think about rendering or even blocking in values. If the linework doesn't look fantastic, rendering will make it look even worse.
>>
>>3473556
by not making his humerus twice the length of his ribcage? Seriously, look down at your own upper arm and your forearm and consider their lengths in relation to the rest of the body. Protip: the forearm comes almost straight at the camera. If you can't draw that you need to lrn2perspective and draw like 50 cylinders in perspective. Do your wrapping lines.

of course you wouldnt youre just a baby

then your eyes just arent as developed
in reality, his redline isnt that bad. the form of the abdomen and feet are successful, but everything else looks like its mismatched and squashed together in order to conform to what was originally drawn. especially the ribcage. didnt even place the neck correctly and the breasts are obviously yucky
>>
>>3474134
Hm, is the ribcage too long, or is not in the right perspective? Not placing the neck correctly, do you mean its too high up or not properly centered? I am guessing you are saying the breast are sagging too much or improperly shaped? While its your prerogative not to redline, it would be helpful to be a little more specific.
>>
>>3474134
i'd say a bit of both since the natural position for me at least is to lean a bit back (also causing the supporting arm to angle backwards as well) .
breasts dont convey any form at all, and their insertion is better indicated by a line into the peck instead of into the delt
the neck is off center, but more obviously not connecting to the head properly
im guessing the lower body is what you used ref for. overall, i think the pose is what fucked you up the most. i draw torsos mainly, and seeing an upright torso with a lower abdomen that faces almost directly upwards is a bit off-putting.

Agreed with >>3473938, the tennis shoes have a lot of volume! Her boobs look a bit wonky though. Her nipples look like they're at the very top of the areola instead of the middle. The bottom half below her boobs likes like its too far to the left, too.

>>3473757
Yeah, you're right, but if I'm to be honest I kinda like the way it looks and I don't feel like redoing the entirety of it at this point.

What would you suggest I do to avoid plastic-looking hair in the future?

Hard understanding of the foundations of art. It breaks past barriers and trends through the full potential of what anime can evolve into. It is ahead of its time and for one we cannot fully rate it based on our current year.

Her right arm has flawed muscle anatomy, since it looks a little wonky flowing, and her deltoids aren't of equal sizes. Additionally, the horns on her head seem uneven, based on the view of her head being only slightly turned. The one with a rectangle thing attached has a clearly visible forward facing shield-like ornament, but the other horn isn't even vaguely symmetrical to that. That all being said, I hope you can make it, your work has been a favorite of mine in these threads.
>>
>>3472911
Ah, wait, the smaller looking deltoid is hidden by the heavier line on her face, so it should be more obvious to spot. Also, the headpiece is crooked when compared to the midplane between her eyes.
