If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. What is an effective way to achieve another artist's style? I want to achieve pic related's style, I currently do studies from life and draw from imagination. If i where to, say draw pic related in various angles and then do the same with other characters of his, will that be enuff? Or at least help me?

I don't know any real tips but have you tried breaking it down into separate parts (eyes, nose, mouth), then you can focus on how it all fits together in order to form that style? Maybe listing out what you like about their art can narrow it down a bit too, really get into the head of the other artist and all that

I actually haven't tried to really study the style other than doing illustrations of his characters, but of course those end up influenced by my own style (or lack thereof). I will list what I find appealing now, and then once I feel confident enough in terms skill, attempt to dissect them as you said. Thank you!

not sure if this counts because I don't think it's really anime/cartoon so much as it's mostly inspired by like, actual j-fashion people wear.

either way, looking for some concrit on how to improve my artistic skills. I usually use pen/ink with line shading but I recently got a pack of gray-scale brush markers and I really like how they look. so tips on how to maximize my technique in handling them would be great.

I like it, especially the details on the character, but if you're going for that gothic style I think the background and props should be more evocative of the gloomy and color-drained imagery typical of that style. Maybe check out some photos of old Victorian-era London for reference? (interiors, balconies, narrow streets) a graveyard is kind of uninspired. Great work on the shading though
>>
>>3512772
These both look extremely flat. If you’re going for graphic then it’s fine but if you want a third dimension in your art you need to study form more. Foreground and background look like they’re on the same plane part of this is the contrast which doesn’t vary at all. Try drawing on a mid tone gray canvas. Unless of course you’re going for very graphic illustration in which case that kinda shit doesn’t really matter.

>>3514036
Just a few things, the proportions are hella off. The hands and feet are honestly disgusting, the feet in particular are pretty bad and masculine. The right one is just badly shaped, the left one is better but still too big, which is still more in the proportion area.
The torso is a awkward, especially where it meets the arm.
Her right hand/arm is being stretched at a bad angle, it should be angled more forward for this type pose. Its a nice attempt at foreshortening her other hand but it feels a bit too extreme due to the angle its coming at, extreme foreshortening like that works better when the hand is taking up a large part of the foreground, but in this case it seems like another part of the piece and looks awkward instead.
Her thigh also looks like a giant flesh pipe.
I'd also recommend cutting back on the necks if you're doing more anime style things, I know bigger necks are more realistic, but in this case it looks masculine, extremely so.

That 3 legged thing wouldn't be able to stand up like that, and the far left one is too symmetric vertically wise. Even if it's supposed to be the most retarded thing it has to be hable to work by the same laws of physics, other wise its just funny.

Ugly, non-harmonious palette
Same face as always
soulless expression
No wonder this board exalts people like Ruan Jia when this competent but utterly pedestrian and soulless piece is considered great.

I think some people feels uncomfortable seeing someone who has been drawing for such a long time (a decade?), yet he's still stuck in the awkward kinda-okay but kinda-not skill level and haven't achieved that much lauded superstar painter level (Krenz, Zeen, Ruan, etc.).
So they bully him and tell him that he's doing things all wrong in order to reassure themselves if they're doing things differently than him, they'll "truly" make it, unlike him.
But I'm probably just projecting.

>>3514662

Here are some simple gestures/poses of Tracer from Overwatch. I want to take this into the computer and do proper linework and color, but I want to know what you guys think of the gestures/poses I’ve laid out. Are they successful? Practice drawing one face over and over again. Eventually you'll be able to draw the face with out needing to fully planing it out.

push your shadows to a more interesting hue. pick the layer and mess around with hue / saturation effect and you may become surprised how cool shadows can become and fill your drawing with life. you could try with a blue hue and play around with how dark or saturated it is until you get it right. your picture feels as if its twilight zone now. only pushing the shadows may enforce that feel.

Even if you try to open both of them in your browser and switch between tabs fast? If so and you aren't phoneposting, that means your display is either not calibrated correctly or has a severely limited color gamut, as the value/tone gaps are rather noticeable. Both cases may impact your own digital drawings, so it's advised to self-check via Gamutvision.

the only set of rules that is constant is that all of your colors are influenced by your lighting environment (not just highlights are warm shadows are cool for instance). and shadows are only the color of the ambient light because that's generally the thing that's dominating the bounce/reflected light (outside during the day would have a blue ambient light which is why shadows are "cool" - the sky is orange here but shes also inside so the environment isnt exactly like being outside) but shadows are also effected by other objects in the environment (from light bouncing off of it). example: if you extended that window light all the way past her hands then the green would bounce light into the shadow on her red sleeves and the book would reflect light onto her face and chest.
anyway no one really cares as long as stuff "looks good" i guess and most people here arent autistic enough to think about this every time they make art
>>
>>3517303
That's a given be basically just uses one or two brushes for his entire process and I'm trying to emulate it since it seems much more efficient than the autism I'm doing.

>>
>>3517317
>>3517345
If you want to do realistic shading, it's quite straightforward. Just study some photos. Shadows draw closer from the base color towards the color that's opposite of light color on the color wheel. The harder the contrast, the closer towards that color they are. They also are more saturated because the "true light" is white, which means zero saturation.

For example, we have skin that can be generally described as a reddish-orange tone. The sunlight is yellowish-white, hence the "true shadow" color is moderately blue. So, when you want to shade, you pick a color that's closer to blue than the color of skin, has more saturation, and at the same time has less value. Hues between red and orange usually work fine, delving into purple in more extreme cases. For highlights, the opposite is true.

In extreme color environments (neon club lights, for example) there might be some exceptions, but this is the general rule that works normally. Nevertheless, stepping away from it might result in interesting pieces sometimes, but only if you sufficiently understand how colors work together.

>>
>>3517446
>suit of armor in overcast environment
the ambient blue light is making shadows cool (noticeable on the leather parts mostly, metal is an obvious example of how the environment reflects light onto objects in it because you can see the colors from the environment in it) and putting a wash over everything i don't see how this proves whatever youre talking about either.
