But that is absolutely a stylistic choice.

The brushwork is better here and I see how he's trying to combine old illustration aesthetics with Rembrandt rendering but I don't think he's quite nailed it yet. This painting is not pleasant to look at. The color and perspective contrasts are too harsh. I wish there were more storytelling here as well. It's too fine art.

I honestly like it a lot more than most RJ threads we had recently.
The composition is clear, it reads well, it carries the message accross and the whole thing is coherent.
It's also more original than "skull rider brandishing a sword" #5521 that the last thread was about.
Pretty much everything that I don't like in this pic can be pinned on artistic choices.
>>
>>3806032
It's a stylistic choice and I believe he mainly does it to direct attention.
His works are always focused on contrasting sharp and blury values, that seems to be the main way he directs attention.
>>
>>3806134
Yeah WTF why does it look so weird?
I thought this guy was a professional, why did /ic/ lie to me?
>>
>>3806068
He has shared how he works.
He uses for main parameters
>Rough/textured
>Wet
>Hard
>Soft
So he uses just usual hard round Brush with wet, soft round with texture, hard round with texture and stuff round with wetness. He contrasts them, so he will use wet hard together with with texture soft etc.
I had his pic explaining it somewhere.

It's not about any particular ones, you just should think of what you're doing in every particular situation. They talk so much about atmospheric perspective that's it's easy to start using it everywhere without thinking, as a tool similar to linear perspective. Of course, atmopheric perspective always works (as long as there's atmosphere), but its strength depends on the weather (and on the artist's intent). Sometimes making the air very clear can have a great effect. In this painting the girl is not supposed to be the main focus of attention. She will draw attention anyway, by just being there, by having her eye visible, by performing an action. There's no need to make her stand out more with atmospheric perspective. Saturated greens on the other hand make the landscape stand more prominent.

exactly since they are both fighting for the focus of attention, atmospheric persp help define the girl as the main focus.

>>3806453
They aren't fighting for attention, the first thing you will look at is the court of the castle, then the girl, her eagle and her raised hand in particular, then the rest of her. Here >>3806389 she grabs all the attention, but she's not supposed to.

Jealousy and envy are emotions more akin to being angry, fearful , and other insecurities which ultimately cloud your mind and judgement which is in no way conducive to the learning process of art. But appreciating what one creates and wanting to figure out why it works and how you can incorporate it into your own work is much different.

not that guy, but - no

People severely misunderstand what a concept artist is - Ruan Jia is an illustrator, he is a very poor designer, many of his designs dont seem designed or thought out, or intruiguing from a narrative/ world building point of view, which is what most concept artists actually help with working on a game or film, apart from the people like him who do sexy splash art for loading screens.

A lot of these paintings hes making are completely devoid of narrative and concept, and are very rendered visual spectacles, that dont have a lifespan beyond the appreciation for the rendering of the vibration of the colors.

He is very good at painting, and navigating contrast, but he uses his skills very poorly from a narrative and poetic point of view.

He is basically a person with very articulate language, full of colourful words - who knows grammar very well, but who couldnt write a captivating heartfelt poem if his life depended on it.

This is a very poor generic design, with the elements haphazardly thrown together, what kind of character is this even?

So ornamented armor and a blaster from star wars, with kitty ears and blue hair, like none of these elements are really harmonised with eachother, and the face is super generic and cutesy - i have no sense of the world this character belongs to, other than it apparently contains everything generic.
>>
>>3806910
Still an illustrator, sure he does splash art, and environment paintings for a game like guildwars etc- which are really good, again, im not saying this guy is a bad painter, im just saying hes not a good designer :-) and to be a concept artist, which really should be called concept designer - means that you have a good sense of design, and worldbuilding.

He is really good at illustrating, not really designing or building narratives.

Come on man you know this is true, you can find tons of things on artstation with better designs and narratives than ruan jias stuff?

Now, I'm glad that we have an art directior here, but what you're saying is that it's a shit concept, not that it's not concept art. Ruan Jia is a concept artist, good or bad doesn't matter now, and that picture is not an illustration.
>>
>>3807635
sure - ill give you that, its a piece showcasing "design" more than it is illustrative - but that really goes for a low-percentage of his work. and most of his "design" is really just an excuse to play with illustrative tools and to paint, not to show a design but to have something to render.
>>

yeah doesn't make sense that people on here don't understand that even pros have weak points. You can't actually be good at everything. There are no masters in this day in age, just highly skilled pros and /ic/ frauds.
>>
I honestly think his landscapes and backgrounds are gorgeous, I just don’t understand why he renders human skin that way, it’s offputting to me. it makes his human characters look like cheap 3D models straight out of an early ps3 game. he’s obviously very skilled but I just don’t get his aesthetic choices.
>>
>>3807768
I like them, it's hard to explain
His art has vibes like Asian dolls or something

I loled so hard reading your reply because you're such an OBVIOUS envy fox.

anime = trash
>>
>>3808151
no, but the particular one he mentioned looked awful.

There is plenty of well made anime, and well made anime feature films.

broaden your horizons, go look at trees, explore the abstract microcosm of the world around you, where textures and patterns turn into paintings, where a coffee stain becomes an idea for a drawing.

Stop Watching Anime
>>
>>3808583
I watch all kinds of animation - i am an animation director, i am not bogged down by what people perceive anime at large as, as i would neither be with european or american animation - simply moving images with a narrative, some of it cliche, ugly, boring - others well thought out and poetic, with interesting visual choices.

Trash is more inspiring than the trash you are watching.

lol, there are unquestionably people who excel at most things and are atleast good at everything.

How about you point me to some intense dynamic angles from Leonardo or Raphael? Oh wait you cant.

The masters of today are far better than those of before because unlike those masters who had to spend time just inventing these methods we now take for granted, pros today can simply lean on aquired knowledge and further improve what already exists. There exists more talented artists per capita today than any time in history, so you'll definately have more living masters today than before.
>>
>>3809040
strange angles and wide angle perspective werent a meme back then, they probably came around because of photography.
but yeah i agree. there are way more good artists now, way more bad artists aswell
>>
>>3809040
And Michael Angelo altered proportions based on where the viewer would be standing. To say they're not better than the artists of today because you say they didnt draw warped some dynamic warped perspective is asinine to say the least. Masters of the past were incredible at foreshortening and could do whats being done today. There is very little differentiating the masters of the past from today, to the point where it becomes subjective of who is better than who. Furthermore you're comparing Apple's to oranges, fine art to more commercial works if fisheye is really what you consider to be the defining factor.

what's your idea of a master in todays age?
>>

This one, he unironicly got worse and worse since he made that one, it is a cursed painting that drained his magic. I have it hanging on my wall.

Don't much care for the way its rendered/painted but I love the structure here, the monolithic white limestone walls and towers topped with bright green grass and the deep blue sky above gives a comfy feeling as well as a good sense of scale, it's aesthetic as fuck

This is a place I'd love to explore. The only bit that feels jarringly out of place is in the center courtyard, and those eastern style buildings and elements but I imagine its some formerly abandoned ancient stronghold rediscovered by a different culture who make it their home and that's what the ruins strewn about are implying too

>>3806346
Fuck, nice.

Pic related is what it reminds me of also, imagine the steep cliff walls clad in white limestone

>There exists more talented artists per capita today than any time in history, so you'll definately have more living masters today than before
Nonsense, quality and quantity don't have a direct correlation.
Find me one living artist that's half as good as Bouguerau, Zorn, Waterhouse, Sargent or Repin. Art quality peaked in 19th century, then photography took root, post modernism became a thing and from there it all went downhill.

you need to relearn perspective

map out the perspective on her feet, and then the perspective on the structures in the distance.

why do people like you just make shit up. hurrdurr you ruined the perspective. shut up idiot.
