It's interesting to see how the great masters sketched. I will share some works by notable artists in this thread.

Looking at these I felt something I haven't felt before: a strong revulsion to French academism. It's all so soulless, rigid and devoid of life. And I used to love it.

Ink and water i guess, they also didn't use the cheap paper we use today so it gives it a nice effect.

Well the point of French academic art wasn't to appeal to emotion. It was an attempt to make art rational and an intellectual pursuit. It was an appeal to the mind.

I actually much prefer neo-classicism to the later knock-off academic art under Napoleon III, which was literally art made for the new bougeousie class who merely wanted artwork in the style because it looked "beautiful." For me, that's soulless.

Thanks.
I had a look, I'm always hoping it might be an old blog I used to have bookmarked on an old PC, that I can't find again.
It used to look at old prints and drawings, and discuss how techniques were used by the artists, eg. how they balanced the distribution of poses of a variety of bodies within a space, or how to render a background to emphasize parts of the subject. It was pure gold....
