it won't be long before your country is fully diversified. maybe then you'll be able to practice your english with your newly naturalized fellow countrymen, but i doubt that they'll be any better than you at speaking english.
doesn't hurt if you listen to audiobooks though. it's a great way to practice your spoken english as the readers are mostly well-spoken and coherently speak unlike newscasters that tend to over-amplify their accents.

Dearest creature in creation,
Study English pronunciation.
I will teach you in my verse
Sounds like corpse, corps, horse, and worse.
I will keep you, Suzy, busy,
Make your head with heat grow dizzy.
Tear in eye, your dress will tear.
So shall I! Oh hear my prayer.

Just compare heart, beard, and heard,
Dies and diet, lord and word,
Sword and sward, retain and Britain.
(Mind the latter, how it's written.)
Now I surely will not plague you
With such words as plaque and ague.
But be careful how you speak:
Say break and steak, but bleak and streak;
Cloven, oven, how and low,
Script, receipt, show, poem, and toe.

Hear me say, devoid of trickery,
Daughter, laughter, and Terpsichore,
Typhoid, measles, topsails, aisles,
Exiles, similes, and reviles;
Scholar, vicar, and cigar,
Solar, mica, war and far;
One, anemone, Balmoral,
Kitchen, lichen, laundry, laurel;
Gertrude, German, wind and mind,
Scene, Melpomene, mankind.

The obligatory English to voc.

Askance, askew
the self's sad fancy smiles at you I swear
at this savage viscous countenance it wears
Though you show here shorn and shaven
and I admit myself forlorn and craven
ghastly grim and ancient raven
wandering from the opiate shores
tell me what thy lordly name is
that you are not nightmare sewage
some dire powder drink or inhalation
framed from flames of downtown lore
quotes the raven, "nevermore."

>After a bit of brushing up, what level would you say you are at? My German is far from fluent but I'd be happy to practice as well if you fancy

I think my German was muuuuch better last year as I've forgotten so many words over the months. I've maybe spoken German once since I moved back home and it didn't last more than a minute because they were in a hurry. Meh.

What about yours? (if you're even still here sorry for the 30 minute late post)

I attended DeutschAkademie in Berlin. It was 225€ a month and you attend class 3 hours a day, 4 times a week. I'd say it's pretty good if you have no other way to use German aside from shopping and the sort. My only complaints were the amount of "refugees" that obviously aren't paying for the classes and piss away time and ruin it for everyone else in the A1.1-A2.1 classes and that C level classes were basically just paid conversation groups which you could do for free if you just go to a pub instead. A2-B2 is golden. Best thing is that you get to meet other people who are also learning German and also want to meet people.

Your accent is very good. Why are you in Germany btw?

>My only complaints were the amount of "refugees" that obviously aren't paying for the classes and piss away time and ruin it for everyone

This is the main reason why I haven't spent any money on a group course. That and time, of course. I was told to stick an ad up in the uni to see if there are any lads who could do a one on one type deal but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

What was the reason you went to DeutschAkademie in the first place?

>Best thing is that you get to meet other people who are also learning German and also want to meet people.

Would love this. Even though I work with Germans and they are very friendly, the culture of inviting each other out is far slower than it is in England or France. Germans seem to be very reserved.

>Your accent is very good.

Cheers, still needs plenty of work obviously but it helps to actually enjoy the language you're learning.

> Why are you in Germany btw?

Long story short: traveling. I will settle here now, though.
>>
It was really good back in high school but now I can't pronounce at all and I've even forgotten some major grammar rules.

I met some Swiss exchange students and my school and even got one of their numbers but I still haven't texted them and it's been like 2 weeks now. I don't even practice German or study anymore. I just don't have the motivation I used to have.

Well I moved to Germany to study and eventually live there but I didn't know the language at first. I tried teaching myself but it wasn't easy or fun and I couldn't become friends with any Germany because I had no contact with any. I saw an advertisement on the U-Bahn for DeutschAkademie and signed up shortly after. I did mess up and traveled more than focus on my future and as you may notice did not study + reside in Germany.

Try looking up a Sprachstammtisch or expat groups on Köln. Many times Germans will attend to meet new people and practice their English.

But yeah. I still would like to return to Germany one day (when I have more money)

They have a french one which I'm considering going along to. There are a surprising amount of brits here but I try to steer clear of them for the most part because they don't seem to give a flying fuck about learning the language which drives me nuts.
