FAQ:
>How do I learn a language? What is the best way to learn one? How should I improve on certain aspects?
Ideally take a class, otherwise buy (torrent) a well-received textbook for your language, google any grammar you have trouble with and no matter what do lots of translation exercises. If you use Duolingo, use other resources and google anything you don't understand, definitely don't just memorize answers for the sake of completing lessons but post an apu if you actually read this but I doubt it
>Will I learn a language by using Duolingo five minutes a day while taking a shit
No
>Should I learn X to get a qt wife/gf (male) etc?
Def not
>Should I learn X because of my heritage
Fuck off

I'm learning Spanish and it's very helpful that I had two years of it in middle school and another two years in high school. I do pimsleur during my commute and then some of a workbook I got on Amazon every day or two. I make flashcards out of the vocabulary using Anki, but that's currently tedious since I haven't done a full tutorial on how to use the Anki software.
I'm still going through the basics since the public school system didn't teach me much in the way of conversation and I just started a week ago. It would really help if I had a proper college textbook to read through and supplement the workbook.

I am taking notes as i go through the work book "talk to me in korean" online and through their audio lessons, and every page I can fit 25 different words on with the English on the left, and the Hangul on the right.

Apparently after 250 words you start to become a beginner in a language, so 10 pages to go :^(

"Гoд" after numerals follows the same pattern as any other noun except its genitive plural form "гoдoв" is substituted with the genitive plural form of the word "лeтo".

What do they sound like then? Your non-biased ears are more trustworthy than native speaker's at this point. I can only assume that the endings you mentioned are pronounced like [ə:] when they're unstressed, and something in the lines of [aæ]/[æ:]/[oɘ] when their first vowel is under the accent.

It's because Madchen is a diminutive and diminutives are ALWAYS neuter.

Before you ask, a diminutive is a word with a suffix(often -chen or -lein) that denotes that it's small. For example: der Vogel - das Vögelchen, which you would more or less translate as the bird - the small bird

(I don't speak German but i'm 99% sure that it's exactly the same reason in Dutch ang German)

"Das Mädchen" comes long ago from "das Mägdchen" (little maiden) which is the diminutive of "die Magd" (which now mostly means just maid, but in the ~15th-17th century when this was in use meant young woman or maiden, unmarried and virgin). It became adopted as the word for girl, even though it is technically a diminutive and therefore neutral.
Hopefully this makes sense and somewhat answers your question.

Well, unlike with German and Dutch, English diminutives aren't special at all, so I imagined that you guys don't learn about them in School unless you have German courses
>>
>>97219336
btw diminutives don't change gender in Romanian
o masă două mese
o măsuță două măsuțe

how does this work in French and Italian? is it only Germanic langs that change gender in diminutive?
and is there a country in the world that uses as many diminutives as the Netherlands?

Question for any Russian speakers, I'm looking at the word 'чpeзвычaйнo', I know 'чpeз' means like over or through, so the whole word means overly or extreme, but what does 'вычaйнo' mean? Google translates it as extreme, so is 'чpeзвычaйнo' mean very extreme or something? Any words to better understand the nuance of ''вычaйнo' would be appreciated!

i mean sure. how often do you think will you read russian cursive irl? you need to know a good deal of words anyway to be able to pick up new words in cursive form because they look quite ambiguous, don't they? you could learn to write cursive while writing, but it's not very important.

>>
>>97245874
fun fact, or at least I always find it funny, is that het kwartje valt is the only idiom I know of that translates ~directly to both Romanian and to English

romanian: i-a picat fisa (literally "his coin dropped")
english: the penny dropped
Dutch: het kwartje valt (literally "the coin fell" although kwartje also sounds like a fourth of smth is it's probably archaic)

I'd love to know if this works in any other lang, maybe we can make one of those nice /lang/ themed .png's

>Nous tous aimons les oranges et les pommes.
Nous aimons tous les oranges et les pommes.* feels more natural.

>Les maisons sont rouges, les roses sont bleues... tiens!
"oh wait" can be translated in tons of different things, but in that context I'd say "attends voir" is the best one (it's very French; not very bookish but it goes very well here)

>J'ai fait mieux que ceci... Hélas, nous y allons encore.
Here, ça/cela > ceci.
"here we go again" = on recommence.

>infâme
You can even translate it to "tristement célèbre" if you want to emphasize it.

>Il joue toutes les semaines au meme parc.
"dans* le même parc" would be better.

>Je reconnais ton effort, mec, nous devrions construire quelquechose plus compliquée un jour
You will stick to the original meaning by being more literate on this one.
J'apprécie tes efforts, mec. On [informal, very used] devrait essayer [this one is added, but it makes it Frencher] de construire etc...

>Des gens disent que si tu es italien tu es un connard parasseux. Honnetement je ne suis pas d'accord, mais ah ben.
Some people = Des gens. People = Les gens.
"mais ah ben." => mais bon.

>Le ventre de mon père est très, très gros, comme vraiment gros. Il est probablement plus grand que le vagin de ta mère.
"like really big" => mais alors vraiment très gros.

>next one
Try replacing the "nous" by "on", except if it's something written.

>Ceci est le dernier alors je vais juste écrire tous les mots qui arrivent à mon esprit maintenant... Ben, ma faute, je dois vraiment dormir, alors au revoir mon gars.
"that comes to my mind" = qui me viennent à l'esprit.
"Eh, my bad" is difficult to translate. Here, I'd say "Ouais, en fait non, je dois vraiment dormir, alors au revoir mon gars."
"Good boy" can be translated by "bonhomme", but it's quite informal.

S'il n'y en a pas, vas-y à ton rythme et essaie de réviser certaines notions de grammaire (par exemple, les conjugations de certains verbes communs) pendant tes vacances.
