There was enough of a demand during the Clannad Kickstarter that they eventually opted to favor the 4:3 resolution over the originally planned widescreen resolution, which probably left a lasting impression on them. Though with how Kickstarter feedback tends to work out, it may have been as you say a loud minority at the time. Of course though, you can easily go find demand for a 16:9 HD resolution as well, so they seem to have decided it was worth supporting both.

So this means that this will be their last VN?
Well, after releasing that ugly remake of GreenGreen and that utsuge named Bokuten I'm not so surprised...

Bamboo tweeted that he'd rather quit and give fans an outstanding product as one last thank you instead of quietly stopping production and going under.

>>
Why are people so surprised that Overdrive is going under? I've suspected this ever since members of it went on to form LevoL. 11gatsu no Arcadia came out in 2015. They don't seem to have been active after 2015 though.

The fact that Hikari Field has now announced Magical Charming certainly explains why it was omitted from the survey they put out a couple weeks ago asking which Lump of Sugar titles people wanted them to pick up.

Would have thought the Go Go Nippon game and its DLC would keep them afloat with how much it sold.
>>
>>16871636
Steam's cut, MG's cut, and many copies being bought while it was on sale really put a dent in profit margins.

Overdrive must be in a ton of debt for even GGN's sales not being enough to keep their doors open. If their crowdfunding fails, then they won't be able to afford to make their final project.

kof, kof... Chrono Kof... Clock quality tl kof, kof...
>>
>>16871864
CC translation is very good though. Its editors who fucked up script with adding stupid quirks.
>>
>>16871904
>CC translation is very good though
No, it wasn't;
What's matter is the finall product and when you read more than a few lines that aren't even close to what the characters are saying then there's must be something wrong with the tl and not only with the ed (uk localization, lack of honorifics, memes, etc...)
>>
>>16871747
My guess is that while they may be able to stall the inevitable with Go Go Nippon DLC, there were enough diminishing returns that they would only have lasted a few years before being forced to close down even if they kept making it.

Rather than delude themselves that they can turn it around, they decided to make one last game as their final legacy. Them making for Steam standards is more so they get the widest possible audience for their last gig rather than for the sake of Steam bux. I can't blame them for wanting to end on a good note rather than Go Go Nippon 2025.

I wouldn't be surprised if they closed their doors the day the game actually releases. Heck, they might do it before that depending on how committed they are to the simultaneous release and how long MG takes to translate it.
>>
>>16872066
Would be pretty hilarious if it turns out to be their Final Fantasy which gives them enough profit to keep them afloat. Snowball chance in hell, but might happen.

Although, they might still just funnel all the profit into LevoL and make VNs there.
>>
>>16871148

Another VN for French 13 yrs old girls?
>>
>>16872791
Their recent release, that LoveKami spinoff, was a rather ecchi title that was designed as a Nekopara clone. Not that I would expect them to release something R18, but they came back to try and get into the Steam craze by selling anime boobs, rather than to get as broad of appeal as possible.
>>
>>16872038
Your standard for judging a translation is off-base.

Also CC was translated quite decently. If you want crappy weeaboo translations go hit up some random community translator from Fuwa, /vn/ ... or current /jp/

LevoL released 1 VN in 2015 then went silent. No idea how that title sold. That was probably their attempt at rebranding rather than shutting down, which likely means that VN didn't sell enough.

First of all the CC was more "localizated" than translated but if you want to defent SP I don't care, even if you swith the word "very good" for "decent".
What I don't understand is why you call any fan-made tl as "crappy weeaboo" (fuwa/4ch aside) when I have seen more that a few better tl than this one; Saya no Uta, Hanachirasu, Swan Song, Eien no Aselia, etc... Maybe you hate them because they use honorifics or the Japanese name order, who knows?
>>

Sounds like he's just jealous that scanlators can actually do things in a timely fashion.
>>
>>16873148
i didn't switch any word because i'm not the same person you were talking with originally. the trials and tribulations of conducting an argument on an anonymous message board.

most competent fan-tls have gone official, so most of the fan-tls currently being made are second tier translations. and second tier translators aren't usually competent enough to do anything other than to stick rigidly to the japanese structure and word choices in ways that make it sound weeaboo. the current climate is such that any translator who's halfway decent soon gets snapped up by some one official.

all the fan-tls you mentioned are from a while ago

If your standards are being released at 85% translated with numerous spelling errors, and making a English character trying to pretend they know Japanese by making them look like a weaboo then I think you have lower standards than Sekai Project does.

I'm not that guy but calling others weeaboo's (a hypocritical word) because they want to have their honorific/japanese structure in the translations is plainly stupid. Pretty sure the people who actually paid money for it give a fuck. Would would be happy with getting an unfinished product?
>>
>>16875266
continuing on, english sentences are often structured subject, verb, object (SVO.) japanese sentences are SOV, or often excluding the subject entirely with heavy implications. japanese is a lot freer and they often do other weird and wonderful things. If you translate japanese to english without changing structure, your translation will sound horribly weird in english. sorry but this is really basic stuff

Sorry, before I was writing from the mobile and shit happens... When I said "structure" I was talking about the name order and such. More news on Little Busters

https://kazamatsuri.org/little-busters-english-edition-features-detailed/

Apparently it will get an HD upgrade like Clannad did; so it will be 1280x720, but also have the option to switch between 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratio. On top of that it will have the ability to switch between Japanese and English at any time.

This isn't directly related to the translation but there were a few people in an earlier thread worried about the resolution and whether the game would end up cropped, so I figured I'd post this.

the only real problem CC had is that they should have gone full blown weeaboo translation. given DD's "hard as fuck" way to translate her lines, SP should have just went in the consistent route and just sticked themselves to weeaboo TL to the end.

DD's lines aren't hard to translate at all though? Just bold or highlight the specific words she's saying in English to emphasize that she's saying it differently/strangely. There's no need to do a double mish-mash of reverse-translating combined with British slang (Although she's not the only one hit by this apparently, so maybe it wasn't even intentional).

The reverse-translation alone or the British slang would be enough on its own (more so the second one, because the first way is pretty silly) but both of them was overkill.

Playing through the original, I'm not too sure where the H-scenes would be placed that wouldn't make the whole thing weird or uncomfortable anyway.

I think there's one after you do the painting thing with Kud and another when Komari is completely mindbroken into thinking you're her brother?

Haruka's route feels weird at any moment for a H-scene, considering it was just soap drama after soap drama. Feels like a post-end or bad end kind of thing.

>Just bold or highlight the specific words she's saying in English to emphasize that she's saying it differently/strangely.

that is not what bold, highlighting, or italics is used for. because of this the audience won't know what you're doing. it's not a good solution
>>
>>16877343

It is in manga.

Nice capitalization and punctuation, Moogy's buddy.
>>
>>16877343
>>16877487
Don't comic books in general do that too?
>>
>>16877554
any that do are using punctuation incorrectly. italics are used only when the word itself is foreign and untranslated. Take "Douzo, lad" for example. Sekai should italicize "douzo" because it's a foreign word, if that word were to be translated into written english ("here you are, lad") but is still spoken in a foreign language, it is not italicized. it is denoted through footnotes or prose.

if comics or manga do otherwise then they do so incorrectly and risk confusing the audience
>>
>>16877582
These rules were decided by you just now.
Fuck off.
>>
>>16877600
would you like me to post the rule? or would you like me to post an example of a book translated two different ways, one which keeps French passages untranslated and italicized and the other which translates those passages and has them unitalicized?

either way no, i won't "fuck off". deal with it
>>
>>16877612
*spoken french passages
>>
>>16877612
There's no official rule.
For each book you post, I can post one manga which does the exact opposite.
>it is denoted through footnotes or prose
TL note: The heroine spoke in English just now. Also, I am an incompetent translator, because it's not like you can HEAR the heroine talk.
>>
>>16877722
It's in all the guidebooks - Chicago, AP etc.

Books are regulated publications, while a lot of the time manga localizations are done by amateurs with money. If you can find a published novel which does the exact opposite, I'll concede the point. The fact that you have to resort to manga is proof enough, though.
>>
>>16877740
There is no rule which describes what to do when English words appear in foreign script. Stop bullshitting.
It appears in published manga as well. I don't read novels, so don't ask the impossible of me.
>>
Not in this argument but yeah, pretty much every foreign translated novel I've read has left certain words in with those words written in italics. I don't know if it's any rule written anyway but it's pretty consistent and works fine, and wouldn't even be looked down upon in a literary sense.
>>16877792
Also, I don't know if you were intending it, but
>I don't read novels, so don't ask the impossible of me.
Is a very funny line.
>>
>>16878113
Not only are you not in this argument, you don't even know what it is about.
We are talking about characters who normally speak in a foreign language, suddenly speaking in English. Not at all about foreign words being untranslated.
>>
Fatal Twelve finished up with $50k from a bit shy of 1100 backers. A relatively impressive total for an unfinished doujin title, although they missed a $55k stretch goal (guessing they'll make that with backerkit).

I can't imagine the crowdfunding parade is done yet though with results still holding up.
>>
>>16877792
It's a guideline for acceptable and good use of english in published works. That's why it's in the guidebooks. You are correct that it isn't a rule, you are incorrect when you say it's acceptable.

Which is why you can only find published "manga" which does this.

>>16878163
He is correct, you are not. Italics are only used when words are left in their original foreign language. That is the guideline. That is what is acceptable. Bitch about it all you want, it makes no difference
>>
>>16878556
You can bitch all you want; italics is still in practice used in the sense which we described in these media.

It's probably fair to say that Sekai using the prospect of a physical edition to boost up its sales of larger games and trying to fund smaller games entirely through crowdfunding seems to be a stable enough of a situation.

How much of that is related to Nutaku money keeping them from being too far into the red is hard to tell though. They don't seem to be doing better off than in previous years when they declared that they were in the red.
>>
>>16881342
>It's probably fair to say that Sekai using the prospect of a physical edition to boost up its sales of larger games and trying to fund smaller games entirely through crowdfunding seems to be a stable enough of a situation.

I agree strongly with that assessment. They did kind of back off of Kickstarter a bit after the Root Double scare and Magical Boy failed, but they seem to have found a stable approach to crowdfunding in the mean time. Additionally, any decline of Kickstarter as a platform for VNs seems to have flatten out or even mildly reversed, and the ability to appeal to other backers of similar Kickstarters has since proven to be invaluable.

>How much of that is related to Nutaku money keeping them from being too far into the red is hard to tell though. They don't seem to be doing better off than in previous years when they declared that they were in the red.

It is going to be difficult to determine that from the outside. One of the initial issues that Sekai Project had was they overpaid for things during their first couple years when the sky seemed to be the limit for anything put on Steam, and they were in a period of rapid expansion. They ended up with results like losing money on G-Senjou (or at least they hadn't made money through when they discussed that), despite selling 5-8k through that point. On Steam they seem to outperform MG on comparable titles, and they have Kickstarter to help farther boost what a title can bring in. Additionally they have a nice base level of revenue coming in thanks to the handful of long term big sellers. All that said, if they have improved their internal budgeting and reduced their costs, they could be in rather stable shape, but trying to guess exactly how they are doing from the outside is a foolish endeavor.

As to their Nutaku deal specifically, it would be awfully nice to know what kind of units Chrono Clock was moving on Nutaku compared to Steam. It has yet to drop out of the top three on the sales chart on Nutaku, and is in fact back up to the first slot at the moment, despite some OELVN (Army Girls) being released on the 14th. But without any concrete idea about what sales on Nutaku looks like with their downloadable games platform, it is impossible to compare how it has done they versus how it has done on Steam.

That'd be hilarious if true.

It took Aroduc, probably one of the fastest (if not THE fastest) translators in this medium, a year or so and it was, what, 90% finished?

Mugi took years translating a 2 hour game, and he had help. He dropped Subahibi and Schatten, and he also claimed that he would likely spend 6 years translating 30-50 hour games.

If this is about Persona 5, it is true that some of the lines are pretty off though. It definitely needed a second QC or something.

>>
>>16899131
There's a number of script differences, translating the adult script adds additional time, and there's a desire to deliver the primary kickstarter goal at the earliest possible time. That probably sums up why the adult version takes much longer. It doesn't seem to bother them much that some rewards take years to deliver, but they seem somewhat sensitive to the main product being late. Though it was available as an add-on, the adult version isn't acknowledged as a part of the kickstarter campaign.
>>
The Steam and Denpasoft versions of Nekonin ExHeart are now out as well. It's anyone guess how the title will do in the end, but at the very least it should break Sekai's recent streak of complete duds at launch with their last 4 games.

>>
>>16899831
I doubt it's going to have issues along those lines, but regardless, I'm guessing Companion is on track to be Sekai's worse performing title. It has thus far peaked at just 3 concurrent users, and has had multiple days with a peak of 0 concurrent users despite launching only 3 weeks ago. It would take a remarkable turnaround to end up doing at all respectable.

Not that their other recent titles have done much better, PacaPlus has peaked at 7 and Trapper Knight, Sharpshooter Princess and The Falconers both peaked at 5. PacaPlus at least may have enough novelty value that it might do okay overtime, similar to Japanese School Life which only peaked at 11 concurrent users but is probably a bit above 2k in sales now.

Nekonin EXHeart on the other hand is at 19 concurrent users on Steam after being out for a bit over an hour and should peak much higher as it will be going up for some time. Not to mention it should sell a meaningful amount of titles on Nutaku and Denpasoft as well.

They just pick and choose lines saying they can write it better but In the overall game and dialogue they would fail worse it. It's just jealousy and petty really for them to be mad and make a big deal out of it.

This is the equivalent of all those people on Fuwanovel who say that the machine translation they are reading is fine and they don't even notice any of the issues people are complaining about. Obviously they must be jealous of the awesome team that worked on it!

I agree no doubt it needed one QC and they were too pressed on time. Fates was so poorly handled especially with the censorship and the head Pat game removed. It was just really silly overall.

They actually tried to say P5 was worse when at best it had a few problems. I can understand the plot, the dialogue, and the interactions. There was just a few lines and typos that were not that good but overall it's still not as bad as they made it out to be.

persona 3 and 4 both already had untranslated japanese dialog and generally shitty translation so i still don't understand why people would wait until now to care

It's because they are spiteful and petty that is all it boils down to. One even complained in his article that a friend did not get the job and that they were horrible. It's like adults that are still children mentally.

With the bad quality of official translations, you'd think fan translations would be boosted again.
>>
>>16904575
I think that is what they are hoping for as their endgame but it backfires in the long-term.

>you'd think fan translations would be boosted again
That requires people to put in time and effort effort while doing it for free. Also most of the decent translators either retired or are now getting paid to do what they did before, so are unlikely to go back beyond doing a favourite VN that has no chance of getting licensed. What's left are mostly the dregs of old projects and people trying to "translate" on fuwa.
>>
>>16904656
That is true and that really does leave a huge hole in the VN community. The size and scope of Translators is small only because Japanese is not an easy language, for English speakers and most other languages in general to learn.

I imagine that most who who try and translate either give up or simply realize it requires a lot of their time than usual.

Does anyone here know any fan translation discord channels? I'm interested in talking to the people involved and perhaps even trying to participate myself.

Can you retards stop making this the Persona general

I swear everywhere I go this shit is spreading like a cancer

Looking at it about 24 hours after launch, Neko-nin had a fairly decent launch. It's already up to 50 reviews (more than their last 4 releases combined) and made it to the top of Steam's popular new releases. It has peaked at 57 concurrent users thus far, which is a good amount, especially compared to other recent titles. It is harder to get a read on how it has done on other platforms, though where it ends up settling on the Denpasoft popularity sort will be indicative of how it has done there compared to other titles in a few days.

Of course, a relatively strong launch is only one part of how the title does long term. But at the very least, it seems Catgirls still have some potential to sell on Steam beyond Nekopara.

As the person who normally gets the updates from the Sekai stream, I had missed it this week. They seem to have uploaded the recording yesterday though, and the only thing to note from it is they gave a tentative "this week" for Eden of Grisaia on Steam.

Of course, it was a Wednesday stream in which they said that, and from then through now there have been no signs of any immediate release upcoming.

Patch would be nice yes. I don't want to pay for all-ages users discounts. Sekai should pay that from their own pockets if they are so obsessed with all-ages.
