This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, and Japanese video games.
If you have no interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Read the guide before asking stupid questions.

To those of you who are deathly afraid of misinterpreting shit and postpone "reading" manga.
If you know basic Japanese grammar (at least all of Tae Kim, except for certain literary expressions), you will be be able to understand most of the text correctly (provided you also use Handbook/DoJG).
If you do mess up a particular sentence, it will likely contradict what was said previously, the pictures or common sense.
And finally if you fuck something up really badly, it's not so terrible either, your very first manga sure as hell won't be one with a plot.

Now go and learn 日本語.

No, but 3000 words is all you need to be able to understand any description without using other dictionaries. The lookup process can take forever if 3000 words is all you know though.

If an high scooler knows 45k japanese words, just how many words are used in the real literature? like the kind of which, a typical high schooler wouldn't understand?

When you read a book for the first time and encounter new words or expression that are unfamiliar, do you pause each time and search for its meaning, or do you continue on and hope that your reading comprehension is good enough to understand the context?
>>
>>19623731
>posting in japanese before you know it
Good job on permanently crippling yourself.
>>
>>19623852
I try not to make it a bad habit and learn from context without looking up words every second. If Rikaichan is available to use, I try to learn context from there.
>>
>>19623877
The thing is, I am not just looking up words, but hooking it up onto my Anki deck for future study. My reading progress is stalled each time and barely moving forward the first few pages. I assume this might just be at the start and once I built up my vocabulary, it would be much easier.
>>
>>19623906
You've permanently crippled yourself

>>
>>19623852
Generally, I look up every unknown word using a textbox and rikai. This is probably the wrong way to do it, but I don't feel comfortable just guessing and moving on.

If I just want to finish reading already I may start skipping some of the more obvious stuff - or, on the contrary, sentences I just don't get at all that aren't important to the plot (with fighting scenes being a common example). If I like the book a lot, I sure as hell will try to understand every sentence to the degree that I can. Even though it means I'm reading at a snail's pace.

It's tiring, but it can't be helped since I cannot learn Japanese.
>>

>read remembring the kana

>>
>>19624058
There isn't a specific order you should learn Japanese. That relies on you entirely.
>>
>>19624045
was that really necessary
>>
>>19624070
you know whats strange about me, i cant remember japanese symbols really fuck all, but i can probably remember the pronunciations, and possibly could say them well. I think all the stress ruined my memory in some case or something. Whats wrong with me?
>>
>>19624013
Where exactly are you going to see those three next to each other?
>>
>>19624078
By the sound of it, you are not surrounding yourself with enough Japanese to process that in your head as much as you are listening. I've had that problem before because I'm used to listening more than reading, thanks to the many years of watching Anime, and being into Japanese culture for more than a decade.

If you browse a website often, play a video game that you can change your region and switch the langue to Japanese, and learn how to write, I recommend doing so. Those is the best method I can think of if you're outside of Japan to get characters stuck in your head. It shouldn't take no more than a week or two depending how much you can, or want to soak in.

I'm ESL, and I can't remember for the life of me how I did it back when I started reading books in English. I remember some words which I assumed the meaning of for so long and eventually finding out what it actually means later. I would like to avoid that as much as possible.
>>
How should I go about learning how to write, at least casually? Lang-8?

While I can understand enough to read VN-tier text, my understanding of grammar is way too imprecise to write anything other than an awkward sentence with the help of weblio and yourei. And I haven't seen a place where you could get explanations as well as corrections.

I'm also ESL, and to this day I keep finding out that I misunderstood some word or expression for decades. But back when I started, it probably helped that I was like still in grade school and that English and, in my case, Russian weren't all that different, compared to the gap between Indo-European languages and goddamn Japanese.

The biggest mistake I made in learning Japanese clearly was starting it in well into my twenties.

Not him, but If you are referring to compound Kanji, it varies. For example, If you take the word 電 (Electricity) and add 話 (to speak) you can guess translation without second guessing and make it seem like second nature. some are that simple.
>>
>>19623172
I can tell these apart. Thanks James.
>>
>>19624591
I'm not talking about guessing words you haven't seen before. rather, remembering the newly learned ones. take 左右 for example. The meaning is obvious to someone who has completed core2k, the only new information one has to learn about this particular word is the reading, which is much easier than learning reading, meaning and recognition for other new words which contains new kanji. I'm only up to 2.5k words so far, but many of the 2k+ words have been like this up until now.
I wonder why djt recommends dropping core at 2k if the rest of the way to 6k is easier than the first 2k part? (unless it's really not)
>>
>>19624623

Typical of the average weeaboo in these threads that "learns" watered-down trash, spoonfed online from bullshit LEARN JAPANESE NOW websites. People have the right to ask a question, you have the right to not answer. You also have the right to be a shitstain but having the right doesn't magically make you an ok person still. Nope, being a shitstain means you're a shitstain no matter where you go and no matter what the culture is like. Also leddit's Japanese board sucks. Been there done that, what seems like 99% of them still RTK drone as a primary learning material.

>>19625975
I wrote something in a foreign language, brought attention to it myself as being blatantly incorrect, and asked if another option was better. I was not "in people's face", it was 2 posts and then obviously I would have stopped as there was nothing else to say. In fact I started googling possible grammar explanations silently under the assumption I would get no help but if I did it would be appreciated.

Then I got a bunch of kids get legitimately upset that someone dared be imperfect and call me a retard.

Was I expecting, DEMANDING, help? Fuck no. Would help have been appreciated? Fuck yeah, but it wasn't necessary.

Does that mean you have to be so black-and-white about it? "Hm... I can either help this person OR I can insult them. Well, I don't really feel like helping so I guess it's option B!" Because apparently it's impossible to ignore a question you don't feel like answering.

There's an obvious difference between asking people to pander me by either praising me or saying nothing, and getting upset when people go out of their way to insult you when it clearly wasn't necessary. I'm sorry you can't understand this difference, I really am. Not sorry for you, of course, but for everyone who has to deal with you.

If he lurked the board like a good 4channer is supposed to he would know. And he himself said that he was on 4chan before djt was even started. He even said the jp meme of eroge all day everyday. I find it hard to believe you can even copy paste that since you both have to have know it was important and originally 4chan didn't have archives at all. Archives is a relatively new thing in the first place. I think even when djt was on /a/ there weren't any official archives. Which meant the mentally ill anon had to have some knowledge. And was smart enough to know that 4chan had 3rd party archives and find the memes that probably don't exist in 2018. Its just hard for me to believe if he was truly mentally ill and not just trolling.

Ok, so the Kongo-class were battlecruisers upgraded to fast battleships.
The subs I have for this say, "Kongo-class Battleship II -- A heavy cruiser," when it's labeling her a fast battleship in English onscreen, and calling a battleship a heavy cruiser makes no sense.
Then the subs have Hiei referring to herself as a Heavy Cruiser.
I can't find the words for "fast battleship" or "heavy cruiser" so I can't work this out for myself. What are they saying?

Are there any major pitfalls of remembering kanji only by the compounds that form words, and not by all of the kun-yomi and on-yomi readings that each individual kanji possesses?

It seems it would be much more efficient to remember kanji by how they interact with each other as one would encounter them, instead of just studying kanji and trying to remember all of their possible readings.

It certainly seems that way for me too!

Who told you that remembering kanji readings was a good idea?
>>
>>19627326
first of all what do you mean by remembering kanji? if you want to read kanji just learn them as they appear naturally in words. don't worry about that kun on yomi nonsense just read the words and your brain will sort it out for you.
>>
>>19627326
>It seems it would be much more efficient to remember kanji by how they interact with each other as one would encounter them
Nope, that'll be trivial once you actually know the kanji. They won't stick for shit beyond the most basic and distinctive ones if you just try to learn them through vocab.

Lol you should have already made a habit of switching most of his autistic primitive naming by now. I chose golem(s) for that one. Golems being creatures that are made from the ground and able to walk around. The extra soil would be the plural form golems since the more dirt/ground you have the more golems you can make. If the primitive naming is good keep it, if not make up your own. You're not forced to use only his made up words. ussop(pre, post, and 3yr post, hancock, saitama, goku, spiderman, subaru are a few anime char namings I brought out of my ass and man do they stick. This. A mistake I made was not associating certain components with memorable figures. For example I'm almost done with RTK and I've kept "taskmaster" pretty generic (basically just loosely visualizing some dark figure with a whip, but this image is fluid and changes), but recently I've pictured taskmaster as Yoda in my stories and they stick better.
>>
>>19627488
I'm not translating it. I can pick up maybe two words in 100 which can sometimes clue me in that a sub is completely wrong, which sends me off looking for a better translation. Then I have to try to work it out only knowing two words in 100.
So the original translation is, "A Kongo-class battleship II -- a heavy cruiser." This:
http://aokihagane.wikia.com/wiki/Hiei
Is calling her a Kongo II class. Is it just supposed to be, "A Kongo II class -- a battleship"?
>>
>>19627592
why do people try to do this

btw fast battle ship and heavy cruiser are actually the same thing just like in english though the latter sounds better

like im not even sure what your issue is in the first place besides that you are seemingly admittedly swinging around in the dark for something that isnt there

Fast battleship is above a battlecruiser which is above a heavy cruiser. Haruna is 27k tons as a battlecruiser, 32k tons as a fast battleship, and Takao is 9.8k tons. Calling a fast battleship a heavy cruiser isn't even close to right.

When I started learning, I quicky learned kana and read through Tae Kim in a week for basics of how the langauge works and jumped straight into a visual novel. And I can tell you all kanji for a beginner look the same. Like even seeing the difference between 大-犬-太 is super hard and actual similar looking ones like 網-綱 or 線-綿 etc is virtually impossible. So you have to draw them cause you don't know what they mean every time. Which is also funny, cause if I see new kanji nowadays and can't guess the reading, I quicky memorize what components it has and draw it in google translate in 5 seconds, but when you are new you are gonna alt-tab back and forth between game window and google translate for every stroke and it takes like 2 minutes to even draw kanji and by that time the whole "context" of what the kek are you ever reading is out the window. And if you only had to draw all of them once it would be nice but the reality is that the next day you'll forget the once you've already looked up anyways. So here's a true story and one example. I did just try to power through and persist with reading for a bit over a month. During that month I saw word 確認, which is super common word so no wonder, like 8 times and each time I just saw it it new context, my brain would go "fuck, I should know this, I already looked it up...can't remember....draw it again -> get mad that couldn't remember -> draw it like 10 times by hand -> 2 days later, can't remember it again, repeat cycle!" And to the point where I was about to quit learning the langauge. So if you are not interested in stuff with furigana, and I'm not (I'd rather shoot myself then read manga or NHK easy), recognition is a crazy issue for a beginner. It's hard to sympathize when you are already literate, cause it seems like you can tell everything just from context, like how do you tell the difference between 湛える and 堪える? literate person will say, it doesn't matter, you'll read the 傷の痛さを湛える even with wrong kanji cause you won't even look at it, you'll just read through but that's not true for anyone who's not literate yet so you need to put yourself in their position.

>>19628066
RTK takes about the same amount of time regardless if you're competent in the language. Recognizing the kanji won't do much for your ability to write.

nt
>>
>>19628471
Seriously? To trip, you need to use a tripcode. Else you're just namefagging. That's why after jamal's name there is the !K/1sx/RVXY, which is a tripcode that is generated from a secret phrase that jamal is using to provide assurance that this is the same jamal as in the past, so you can't just namefag as him.
>>
I have seen a lot of time the construction noun+the particule め, does anyone here knows what it is supposed to mean?

If you think his correction is "almost right" your opinion is not needed.
Correcting the phrase to fit grammar that you learned in Genki doesn't mean your correction is good, you gotta preserve the intended meaning of the original phrase instead of completely changing it.

jamal never tripped before this one thread. I only knew about him because people said jamal's guide was bad and to follow in nukemarine's guide. Which let me know right away jamal's guide would be better.

Kino and Hermes enter a new country and immediately see mountains of trash everywhere, people living in the streets, and dogs looking for scraps of food. Hermes immediately says this:

How does にして... あり function? I'm assuming it's part of the same grammar construction, but I'm having a difficult time finding anything like that on google.

I did the DJT Kana quiz thing for like 200 in a row I thought I felt pretty solid in the kana characters but I instantly don't know how to pronounce whatever these lines are.

Looks like ni and tsu but then they give fu ta tsu
>>
>>19629959

>>
>>19630003
so that is like 2 of something

ni is just saying the word 2?
>>
>>19630009
Yes, it's like 2 of something. The Japanese language have a various system how to count certain things such as items, food, people, etc.

I'm sick of anki. I'm sick of almost always failing a card once it gets to ~20 days stage of maturity. I'm sick of it, nothing sticks, and even those that sticks feel alien when they appear on a different context and I have to make sure I read it correctly.

I'm just going to open up a book, be armed with a japanese dictionary app in my hand, and look up anything that confuses me. I remember enough that I only need to look up like 5-6 times every LN page, my grammar is still shoddy, but fuck it, I'm tired of anki. I'm tired of seeing that "mature cards lost" graph, I'm sick of adding new cards, I have had enough of all of this. 10 months of anki is enough.

>>19630033
Don't "study" for starters. Do what you find the most fun in Japanese. Admittedly it is painful but the pain is slowly but surely replaced with fun as you improve.
>>
>>19630062
I could figure that much at least, but I don't understand what is being said. The context is that someone she didn't like was standing next to this girls friend, so she greeted the friend in a cheerful manner before realizing he was there, when she realized he was she said 話を聞かないのがきた. Is の a substitute for the person she doesn't like, and she essentially said " A person who doesn't listen to (this) talk has come"?

what's that video where steve kaufmann talks about how you don't need to stress yourself over remembering words as you come across them, rather every time you encounter a word it increases a little XP bar for that word. you might not remember it, and if you do remember it, you might not fully understand all its nuances. but over time, all sorts of words start reaching XP levels where you find yourself understanding a lot more than you did before.

in other words don't worry about anki and core decks, just read more. but seriously which video was it?
>>
Good meeowning everyone
>>
>>19630218
i think anki does a good job of making it so you don't worry too much about remembering every word. after all, it suspends difficult words by default. this advice seems more directed toward people who were studying with more manual methods

I don’t even understand how English works. You can remember and know a word you hardly ever see just like that in a flash. There are so many complex words you learn once and then just know. It’s so weird. I have no idea how word memory works. Other languages including Japanese should follow the sameness guidelines, so this is how natives feel too? I do wonder. Language is a mysterious thing. Like how it’s possible to know it well by ear but not by tongue or reading.

>>19630952
You have no idea what you're talking about.
In the beginning, even if the guide is perfect, you'll misunderstand at least 30% of it.
Every normal language learner upon reaching the stage where they can read non-literary text in the target language relatively easily starts re-learning the grammar from the beginning, but this time using books written by natives (and maybe even for natives).
Not to mention that true understanding of grammar comes only from input, so even if there are any mistakes in the shitty guide you used as a beginner, reading and listening will fix most of them.

>>
>>19631026
The guy who replied wasn't me.

I'd say, it's when you no longer associate Japanese grammar with the grammar of your own native language and simply understand it, feel it. The words in vocabulary at that point also detach from the long lists of possible translations and become ideas, although you may still use them wrong or not know what verbs go with a particular noun; it's okay, you're only "intermediate", not "advanced".
>>
>>19631049
I guess this is an ok definition. I disagree with it but applying it back to your first post I can agree that TK is bad at that point.
>>
>>19631011
If you drill misleading grammar and reinforce it thousands of times in the input stage it's going to be impossible to fix. There's a difference between not understanding something and incorrectly thinking you do understand, having memorized it. People who learn languages through mass input without grammar study never confuse simple grammar patterns because they don't cripple their L2 in this way.

>>19631012
Nobody is going to publish a work that they know contains basic grammatical errors so clearly they do care, they just can't fix their unconscious misunderstanding.

Not sure why you disagree. IMHO, it's only the very beginning, the point where the language stops being a subject of study and becomes a tool you need to master.
It's like, you have a katana, and you finally stop using it like you would use a machete. But you're still just awkwardly swinging it around and anxiously comparing your every move to those of katana masters, always thinking that you're doing something wrong (and you most likely are).
It's been over 3 years since the English language became an independent body of knowledge in my mind, I can't even properly translate my own words into my native language because I only think in English when i speak. But I know I still suck badly and the online test I took on TOEFL / Cambridge exams related websites agree with me. I'm still Upper *Intermediate*.
>>
>>19631120
Not as well, because there are large enough pockets of speakers of most languages that immigrants can surround themselves only with people who share their native tongue, and get by while minimizing their use of English. Communicating with the rest of the country through their children, bilingual friends, etc.

In Japan it's harder to get by without Japanese, from what I understand. There are some English-speaking communities in Tokyo, but if that's the company you choose to keep while in Japan, then your don't-want-to-learn-Japanese mind is so powerful that I doubt you'd put in the effort to even look at a grammar guide.

It's really useful because the words are so common, but after you're done with stuff like "school", "dog" and "apple", you'll find that the example sentence gives you more information about the meaning of the word than the randomly picked translations.
You might want to start actively using dictionaries and lots of example sentences if you want to have at least a general idea of what the words might mean. Be ready to look stuff up on simple Japanese websites, too, to know the difference between seemingly identical words.
