I'm currently watching Gakeppuchi Hotel and damn, Toda Erika is so ugly nowadays.
>>

Sadly, people get old, anon.
>>
>>19878130
She's only 30. Japanese females usually look good well into their late 30s.
>>
>>19877985
I finished watching that a month ago. Yeah she is definitely ugly now. As for the show, it's decent storywise and lighthearted, but the characters are too 2 dimensional.
>>
Tried to get into jp cinema and watched "Confessions" because it won the jp academy award for that year
and I didn't like it because it was as though I was reading a book....too much shit I didn't need to know crammed into a 100min movie, too much narration and for its length felt kind of long and plodding, never seeming to go anywhere

judging from the past winners Japan really does slice-of-life well like sanchome no yuuhi, departures, our little sister, the great passage, etc. but this best picture win baffles me

Looking for a horror movie I saw years ago and cant recall the name of.

A lot nonsense happens in it but it's all part of one larger story not an anthology like Tales of Terror from Tokyo.

It opens with eyeball slug creatures sliding accross a highway with cars running over them and a creepy song/chant done by kids. In no particular order a family moves into a new house with a spooky ghost in the futon closet that ends up killing all of them I think. A young man gets a job as a waiter and sees a masked old man sitting alone at a corner all night long and goes to talk to him before another waitress stops him and turns out it's a spooky monster. A bunch of drunk bros are wandering the streets when they see a sexy geisha wearing a basket over her head but she is also a spooky monster. A young man gets a cursed sticker on his motorcycle and crashes lightly into some shrubs and talks to someone passing by before the dude pulls him out of the shrubs and turns out motorcycle dude has an entire half of his body missing and he was talking to the father of the family moving in the new house.

Thank you in advance.

If anyone knows where I can find the Shinsengumi Taiga drama from 2004 in higher than bare-minimum quality and with English subs, please spoonfeed me.
The release on Nyaa is of decent quality but the subs aren't in English. Tried all the links in the OP pastebin and only found a release on the Russian site, which had (hardcoded) subs but the quality was 240p or less.

Well, I watched it anyway. It's like your typical capeshit film. Like watching the FMA film which would you appreciate more if you knew the actors. Also it's like watching a crossover of kamen rider and hana nochi hare due to the characters' acting. Fine movie, and nothing spectacular.

Looked up some popularity rankings of Japanese actresses:
1. #21 in the ranking of top 30 most popular Japanese actresses ( https://rank1-media.com/I0000109 )
2. #2 in the ranking of top 35 most popular actresses in their twenties ( https://rank1-media.com/I0000064/&page=1 )
3. #9 in the ranking of top 15 cute, young actresses ( https://ciatr.jp/topics/69926 )
4. #13 in another ranking of popular Japanese actresses ( https://www.channelcinema.com/ranking/2018actressjpbest.html )
So it would seem she is quite popular. However, you should keep in mind that these rankings are just the top 4 I got in google when I popped in google "日本の女優人気ランキング", so they might not (and probably aren't) very objective.

Both are correct by the dictionary standard.
Adaptation is the common old word while adaption is a word made up by autist that eventually got recognized by the dictionary people. Also, I am just greentexting the other anon, I am more towards using 'adaptation' myself, since it sounds much better.

What are some drama that you'd put above the norm on a writing/directing level? Or in other words, drama where it was the plot or cinematography that impressed you, rather than just girls being cute.

For me it was Mother. It looked like a typical housewife drama on first glance, but the production values were above average and the script does a really good job in getting you emotionally invested.
>>
>>19894327
I am not her fan but eh, she looks just fine. If I were to compare Tsuchiya to Yoshine Kyoko in Kasane, Yoshine wins hands down.
>>
>>19897027
Bokutachi ga yarimashita for both directing and writing.
Hanbun, Aoi for characters and plot.
>>
>>19897027
I liked Tonbi. The family relations and the way a child's growing up process is shown really worked with me.
Also, I agree with >>19897392 on Bokutachi ga Yarimashita (haven't seen Hanbun, Aoi so I can't judge that).
>>

>>
>>19878837
source?
>>
>>19897565
I checked and it was, but it avoids the mistakes that most manga adaptations that you hear about make, so it doesn't even feel like it.
>>
>>19897455
If you like family drama and character growth, both physically and personality, Hanbun, Aoi is a must watch (written by the writer of Long Vacation, I supposed). Well, most asadora tells a story of main character's growth and how the environment she's raised in affected herself in all aspect, but Hanbun, Aoi plot flows naturally and the drama doesn't feel too forced like certain asadora and regular jdrama.
>>
>>19897027
well for me I'd say Nobuta wo Produce is one of the best SoL drama I have seen. The characters and their dialogues are written as realistically as possible. Even the problems they encounter every episode is as realistic as possible too. Nothing overly theatrical happens.
>>19897565
This one is really good too. I never read the manga so I was so surprised with how the story played out. Also the lead actor (Kubota) plays his role so well. IMO, he's the best actor in his generation when you look how he did his performance.

I will give it a try, but as my Japanese is still pretty bad: is it really easy to understand or should I wait for subtitles to come out?
>>
oh fuck Kirin Kiki just died
>>
>>19899231
you can wait though but most of the time asadora won't get subbed at all.
>>
>>19900358
Maybe I was just lucky with the asadoras I chose to watch, but so far I have tried to watch 5 of them and all of them were subbed (Amachan, Gochisousan, Mare, Asa ga Kita, Hiyokko). Maybe it's just that I picked the popular ones or smth, but if Hanbun, Aoi is as good as you say it is, then it's probably just a matter of time.
>>
>>19900328
The only thing I've seen with her in it was Kage no Gundan. Still, RIP.
>>
>>19900586
Those asadora you watched were subbed because they had quality and popular actress became the lead.
Hanbun, Aoi will most probably get sub (since Nagano Mei is the next big thing), but not sooner though.
>>
>>19900586
Did you like Gochisousan and Asa ga Kita? Im finishing Mare soon and looking for a new Asadora to watch. Already watched Amachan and Hiyokko.
>>
Are these asadoras really worth watching? I can't fathom something going for 100+ episodes and not becoming boring
>>
>>19904187
If you even consider it, you're probably so far gone you might as well try them.
>>
>>19904187
Asadora runs for 15 minutes each episodes. When you totaled a whole series up and compared to regular drama run time, you will get roughly 50+ episodes per series. Also, asadora make use of time skips so that the character can develop throughout the whole story. I have only watched Teru Teru Kazoku, Beppin-san and Hanbun Aoi; out of these three Hanbun Aoi has the most consistent writing, no forced drama down your throat and the time skips flow naturally.

Teru Teru Kazoku is fine, though Ishihara Satomi, the lead actress didn't matter until episode 100 (it's kinda strange since the story mostly focuses on her mother's decision to drive the story), but the story is fine, not the best though.

Beppin-san, has a lot of forced drama and the time skips doesn't transitioned well. I watched it purely because Yoshine Kyoko is the lead.

So I suggest that if you want to watch asadora, give it chance until you reach week 5, or at least until the lead actress in on screen, since the story will start with main character's childhood. You can drop it if it bores you, then.
>>
Bokutachi ga yarimashita. The ending feels so grounded that it makes me feel depressed.
>>
>>19904182
I liked Asa ga Kita, but the actress in Gochisousan didn't quite fit the role for me (I've seen her previously in xxxHOLIC and maybe that was because of the image I had of her character from there), so I haven't finished it (I was around 40 episodes in, I think).
>>
>>19904187

I watched some of Amachan and it bored the hell out of me. I'm sure they're all the same corny shit.
>>
>>19905964
I mean, they are shows for bored housewives and people who just want to feel comfy. You might say they are the drama equivalent of the slice of life genre in anime aka "cute girls do stuff".

Hello lads, I am looking for two kinds of shows.
What are some of the most influential classic japanese shows? The kinds of things they reference on those variety quiz shows. Things like Taiyo ni Hoero (which I unfortunately can't find anywhere).
And I am looking for a good slice-of-life jidaigeki. Something more lighthearted and maybe focused on some not-so-important members of ancient society.
Thanks!

>>
>>19908668
it's gonna be directed by Yuichi Fukuda
>>
Watched the first episode of Bokutachi ga yarimashita. It was ok I guess.

Renko Aokawas actress is really cute, though I don't like the character she acts. Why would she hang around that bad dude? The acting and logical leaps as a whole feel exaggerated in this, I know this isn't uncommon in drama, but I just don't like it and many drama do fine without that. Finally, I REALLY hated the gang leader dude, I hope he's actually dead and won't come back for the rest of the series. From here on out I'm not too sure what direction the show will go, them running away and hoping to not get caught by the detective/police/gang members? I hope it's not that lame and has some surprises.
>>
>>19916946

I need help remembering the title of a film; it's about a brother-sister sibling (not exactly certain if their parents were dead or abandoned them from the start), the little sister grew up to be quite a rebellious teenage brat, but straightened up her act towards the end of the film, just before her brother dies from overworking.

15 episodes of Hanbun, Aoi are subbed on kissasian at the moment. It's comfy, I like it.
>>
>>19923850
And then it goes roller coaster for Suzume.
Still comfy though, one thing I like about Hanbun Aoi is that the writer doesn't force the plot down the audience's throat. It's just like watching Non Non Biyori but with an actual story.
>>
>>19907868
Why is Yamazaki so popular. He sucks
>>
Did Zero: The Bravest Money Game get subbed yet?
>>
trying to identify a show I saw once
it was a rakugo but they acted out the story as it was being told; when talking they just mouthed the dialogue so the storyteller/narrator was the only one speaking. The production value made it seem like a fairly recent show, maybe even currently in syndication.
>>
>>19924310

Kurosawa is Japanese cinema. So I dont see why he's not being discussed. He's infact the greatest director Japan has ever had.
>>

I know Rashomon is all the rave but what do you make of Throne of Blood?
I found it a bit too much to enjoy properly.
>>
>>19967485
I discuss it on /tv/. This is more of a cozy jdrama thread for me which no other board accepts.
>>
>>19967734
well both of those films are some of my least favorites.
I think Yojimbo, Hidden Fortress, Drunken Angel, High and Low are truly entertaining.

Roshomon and Throne of blood both have a very Kabuki, Noh theater vibe to them. Which makes them feel less relatable.
>>
>>19967734
>>19967823
Throne of Blood is my favorite Kurosawa film; I guess you have to love Macbeth to enjoy it as an adaptation. The atmosphere and acting is near-perfect; one of Mifune's best roles in my mind.
>>
>>19968002
how many kurosawa films have you seen because i think Ran and Kagemusha are both better than Throne of Blood.
Although they don't have Mifune in them.

Nakadai is also amazing.
>>
>>19968048
I haven't seen Ran, but I think I have seen all his other jidaigeki and a few of his gendaigeki
Kagemusha is very good, but I feel like it is ultimately far too long and doesn't really develop the kagemusha as a character as much as it should to make the ending meaningful. I get the point that he's becoming a shadow himself, but I feel like the ending of Throne of Blood, which highlights the same theme (futility of unbridled ambition, the ultimate hollowness of their efforts), is more powerful because we have seen Macbeth develop the whole way through.
I further appreciate the adaptation of the supernatural elements of Macbeth into the Japanese context, and I think it goes over well in that film.
>>
>>19968100
I'm not sure why but Throne of Blood never really clicked with me. It's probably just because i had watched Yojimbo and Seven Samurai before.
Those movies are more lighthearted, entertaining and fun.

You might like ran, the trap actress makes my dick very confused.
>>
>>19968130
Don't sweat it, people like what they will like. I always watch it again around Halloween along with Kobayashi Masaki's Kwaidan
yeah I have been meaning to get around to more kurosawa, Ran in particular. I also need to see High and Low.
>>
>>19968165
High and Low is phenomenal.

Looking for something comfy and calm to watch. It doesn't necessarily have to be happy go lucky though, sad plots are fine as long as it is "quiet" and the characters aren't being hyper and yelling. This one is not needed but would be nice if it was set in the current season, autumn/winter.
Any suggestions?

11% is decent/good nowadays, and it’s kinda a stable for the NTV’s Wed 10PM time slot (depending on the lead). We can’t assume if it’s bad or good just yet, some dramas tend to pick up live audience around mid to final episodes. With that being said, I’m not confident this one will be a hit, but I hope it will prove me wrong.

When did Japanese TV get good? I always remembered Japanese TV shows from the 90s and early 2000s looking remarkably worse than their western counterparts. I just watched some of the newer shows on Netflix and I'm impressed. Some genuinely good productions.

Why was Japanese TV in the early 2000s so bad anyway?
>>
>>20086275
Probably two reasons:
1. Budget
2. Western acting style in movies was highly influenced my method acting technic, whereas Japanese was stilly highly bound to classical theatre and might seem like overacting. Over years the western influence led to the shift in the acting style towards something closer to what you are used to.
