This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, visual novels, light novels, and Japanese video games.
If you have no interest in the above or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Read the guide before asking stupid questions.

25 new words left on core6k and then i'll go back to my mining deck which i started at 4k~ and stopped because i kept getting my mined words in core

i thought it would be a nice relaxation period or something but actually my workload will increase because i still have to review my cards in core6k and then new words + reviews in mining deck

ngmi
>>
>>20040799
You can always delete that worthless core deck and focus on mining.
>>
>>20040822

At least 5 times in the past month I have seen a word with no furigana when reading that I didn't recognize and saw it within 2 days on my core deck. You cant argue against that
>>
>>20040829
So what, some obscure word you saw for the first time also popped in the core deck, and you think it's a good thing? You could always simply mine it, but it would probably be a bad idea.

So i tried setting up a text hooker, but it wont show me any text from the actual text windows, this one seems to only activate during backlog/frames, and the rest are complete gibberish

Is there a common mistake i did, or are some VN's simply incompatible with ITH?

TBF it's not unreasonable to have not yet encountered 禅 even through months of extensive reading and vocab mining. Not like you'll forget it once you see it, but at the same time there are just those occasional rare/obscure shitter Kanji you only see once in a while that have incredibly niche use.

Shit, I only know it because がんばれゴエモン〜ネオ桃山幕府のおどり〜 has a location CALLED ざぜん町 which did not even appear as Kanji, and have not seen it in anything since then.

Should I do more cards per day in the begining then go back to 20 later or just keep it at 20 cards?

It means putting stuff you learned into Anki so you don't have to read 18 hours a day to review all the different stuff you're learning. It's more efficient than just reading. See http://www.antimoon.com/how/usingsm-makeitems-sentence.htm

So some of you might know Kanshudo, it has this neat search that breaks kanji down into their components / parts

Unfortunately you can't easily use your own mnemonics on Kanshudo, so I've pretty much recreated Kanshudo in an excel sheet that allows me to paste in a Kanji and it creates a copy-pasteable anki snippet of a kanji's components (and the components' components) with my own mnemonics I have defined in said excel sheet

I'm thinking about polishing this up and turning it into an actual website, pretty much like kanshudo (kanji with component-trees) mixed with koohii (mnemonics are user created and you can vote on the top mnemonics so they can easily be used by others). Looking for feedback if anybody would actually be interested in such a website, otherwise I won't bother with the public community voting-functionality and keep it local to myself only

pic related, kanshudo which breaks down a kanji into parts with (unfortunately shitty) mnemonics. It'd essentially be that, except the mnemonics are user-created and you can either create your own mnemonics, or use other users'
>>
>>20043019
if someone is going to dedicate time to isolated kanji study then they can just do RTK which teaches component parts and gradually builds up to more complex kanji. Also koohi is shit for memory, but probably good if you're just doing lazy kanji or some shit like that because you're afraid of reading
>>
>>20043119
Yeah I thought as much.

I think inidivudal kanji study like RTK is retarded, so I'm learning kanji in the order they actually appear in my reading material. If I don't know a kanji's components I learn those with the actual vocab (which is why I like Kanshudo's complete breakdown of a kanji, since it just lets me learn everything at once for a piece of vocab)

But I'm guessing I'm pretty unusual in that way of doing things
>>
>>20042856
>I'm actually more interested in learning japanese for visual novels, can I start mining using that instead?
of course. and you might have better results than me if you mine, since i haven't learned jack diddly squat from leyline in the month i've been reading it.

Guys can we please get back on topic? I've been learning Japanese (Nihongo) for 3 years now... 1 year self study and 2 years in uni. And i feel like the kanjis are just not sticking with me. What should I try to memorize them for more then a week? I now about 100-120 kanjis already and can read basic material in romanji and a little bit in hiragana. What can I do to improve my learning? I want to be fluid in Japanese in 5-10 years, is that a reasonable expectation? And is it even possible to read easy mangas by learning yourself (without taking a class)?

We're not all hardcore like you. I was not serious about learning Japanese when I started out. I just downloaded an app for something to do when brushing my teeth. I remember the first 5 were super hard! But near the end it got easier. Hopefully kanji is the same way...Another thing is that I have been learning it for 2 years now. Off an on. So I feel like it's something I know. Not something that I have crammed for and will forget. I have known all my kana for a few months now but I am now at a point where I can read it well and fast without mistakes. I bought genki 1 in May but didn't want to start until my kana was solid. I will start it tonight. I didn't post much but I read here alot. Also I used to think the matrix was all weird characters but now since I know all the kana it makes sense to me!

This is probably a reddit post but I am not hardcore, I just love light novels and anime. That is it nothing more nothing less. I feel most people here are not the smartest and maybe 1% may go on to learn japanese but if I can get the one percent into light novels as well that is a win for me.

Yea to be honest 6k core is too deep into core. Some of those cards are pointless. Delete all your decks, make a deck from whatever you're reading. I got this app on my tablet I can upload text to so I upload books onto it, and it analyzes it and make it into a touch and word/expression and get definition thing. You can save all of your words for review later automatically too.

ive been learning Japanese mostly through wanikani and learn hiragana/katakana. I delved slightly into tae kims grammar guide and can make simple sentences like, I am well and I love Japan. Im wondering what else I could do to make it feel like im really progressing. Im learning the vocab kanji slowly but I feel like I forget a great amount of it still. The problem is I dont feel like im progressing much as I still cant hold a conversation or complete longer sentences. What are some things you veterans used to get to fully speaking Japanese?

It's not. Now you know what you're doing is at best a waste of time. That's why you're struggling.

leyline is a pretty good VN, but if it's your first read then it's gonna be tough. unfortunately your first read is going to be tough no matter what. i think the issue with VNs for beginners is that it takes forever for them to become very interesting and you might burn out before then. have you tried reading kino no tabi? since each chapter is a self contained story, you get a complete experience each time you finish one. it's a little bit harder but it'll at least give you a full beginning, middle, and end each time and thus might lead to a more satisfying result. just don't get stuck on the prologue because it's a little philosophical and might be confusing.

You learn from input not corrections
>as well as having the language drilled into your head as part of your school curriculum
You learn from input, not by taking nip classes
>>
>>20045793
output corrections don't affect anything
considering that bilinguals don't have the problem either it's safe to say that small amounts of production within your ability are not an issue
the issue is when you try to translate from one language to the language you don't know well or you're forcing reproductions of exercises with other incompetent non-natives like european schools make people do
>>
>>20045793
Nobody has ever learned their native language because of school. Trivia about it, yes. The language itself, no. There are cases where they have learned to read because of school, but this is obviously not necessary at all, especially in a world where kids have internet-connected supercomputers in their pockets.
>>
school life literally shapes your language ability largely because its where you spend a good chunk of your day amongst your peers in frankly a mini society

Considering how many time related words exist for oddly specific sections of time (下旬、中旬、上旬、初旬, etc) I'm kind of sad they didn't take the days of the week to extremes when talking about every repeating instance of a given day. Mostly by choosing plural or larger/broader forms of words. Exmaples follow:

>Every 日曜日 in a month = 星曜日 (せいようび)
>月曜日 = 朏曜日 (はいようび)
>火曜日 = 炎曜日 (えんようび)
>水曜日 = 湖曜日 (こようび)
>木曜日 = 森曜日 (しんようび)
>金曜日 = 宝曜日 (ほうようび)
>土曜日 = 地曜日 (unorthodox reading, ちきゅうび as an abbv of 地球曜日)

Personally I think they're trying to hold others back and not help them. It's a well documented phenomenon where some people who learn japanese get jealous of other learners, and try to get them not to move to japan, etc.
That or they think people are retarded like them and can't handle it. They said you can only focus on learning for a few hours but I go all day sometimes.

What is with all you meme learners and mattcocksuckers who are so obsessed with time. It's a process, it takes years of DOING i.e. speaking and "producing".
Language is and has always been a tool for human communication. It's not like autistically memorizing a list of pokemans.
Similarly people learn the piano by playing it. They don't learn by staring at sheet music 8 hours a day and never touching a single key.
>>
>>20050388
>speaking and "producing"
i couldn't care less about output for now, which is why i won't start practicing it until a year or two passes.

i've read enough anecdotes from people who learned from immersion to know that output isn't required to improve your comprehension to n2 and n1 levels within a couple years.

I don't know how this shit show is so popular. The villains are all so comically evil that it's impossible to take them seriously or refrain from cringing in embarrassment for everyone involved with the show every time they show up on screen.

I took a few practice N2's, aced the kanji part 90%, then got 30% on grammar, and 50% on vocab. To be honest the kanji is probably the hardest part but I learned everything backwards doing ajatt.

It's really hard for me to pick a top 5 because I like lots of different shows for different reasons. Ignoring all objective criteria and just going with those I have particularly special feelings for, I guess it would be...

TV: Gochi Usa, Overlord, Kino no Tabi, Spice and Wolf and Haruhi. Special mentions to Gankutsuou, Big O, LoGH and Madoka.

Movie: Windaria, Mononoke Hime, Spirited Away, Tokyo Godfathers and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Special mentions to Nausicaa, Howl's Moving Castle, Hotarubi no Mori e and Akira.

Evangelion 2.22, Ninja Scroll, Akira, Perfect Blue, Fist of the Northstar

Except he's permanently crippling himself by thinking in english before japanese when he see's a kanji. I learned the main reading alongside or even before the english when I did the rtk deck.
His brain will do Kanji → English → Japanese
It would take years to fix that even after he learns japanese.

Gloss over what N5-N3 grammar is full of, none of it is particularly difficult to remember or time-consuming. Read all the NHK Easy articles from the past 2 years once and you'll be a solid intermediate when you finish and it won't take more than a month unless you're a lazy dekinai who only studies an hour a day.
