>>
>>33697695

Yeah but Type 45 destroyers weigh just as much. So in order to justify that tonnage, the Type 26 needs to be able to do something that the Type 45 can't do.
>>
>>33697622

Space for equipment, space for a large mission bay, space for provisions for long endurance, space for generators capable of future systems.

The design's got a massive empty space built into it as a mission bay, for the express purpose of "whatever we need to put in or on this ship to do jobs we haven't even identified yet". You could turn it into a small amphibious raiding party launch platform, or a homebase for multiple UAVs/USVs/UUVs, or additional generators to support high energy munitions systems (Laser, railgun etc), or even carry 4 helicopters internally if you really wanted it to. The space could be used to mount additional VLS with some superstructure modifications. It's intentionally separated for that fact alone.

Thats why its so big. It's designed to be extremely open architecture to upgrades, both known and unknown.

Pic related shows a portion of the mission bay being used for a raiding party loadout, with 4 Royal Marine raiding vessels, which are twice the size of normal RHIBs carried by ships, and carrying four of them in this pic. That mission bay is fucking enormous.

>>
>>33697777

Acoustically quietened hull taken to the nth degree. It's part of the reason why it's taken so long (albeit not the only reason, thanks SNP...), BAE are doing some serious quietening shit with that thing. This IS the successor to the Type 23 after all.

It's got a much improved hull sonar, probably the best towed sonar in the world (Sonar 2087/CAPTAS 4), will have ASROC on VLS and will be intended to carry ASW Merlins more often than the general purpose Wildcats the Type 45 carries. Thats a much more comprehensive ASW suite than the Type 45, which really isn't intended for that role outside of its helo and hull sonar.

>>33697777

Extensive sound damping and specialist equipment.

In general terms, the fundamentals of a good AAW escort and ASW escort are opposite.

With a AAW escort, you'd want the radar to be fitted high as possible since this allows it to seen further into the horizon. However, the problem is that of course, radars and their supporting equipment are heavy (much like the fat PO who looks after it).

With a ASW escort, you want the noise generating parts like engines lifted higher as this allows more sound damping wizardry to be applied. This of course means having also some of your heaviest parts higher.

If one were to apply both you'd make your ship very top heavy, meaning she'd suffer with much poorer seakeeping, meaning you'd need to run home if the weather was bad.
>>
>>33697919
*I suppose this is where the RAN might

Half vague because little info exists, half vague because I'm not 100% aware of the specifics that cause it other than knowing it adds weight and is very high end.

The basic comparison I've heard bandied about is "they're essentially building the bottom half of an Astute class submarine to mount a ship on top of" in terms of quiet running.

Samsung vs Apple
>>
>>33698153

>>
>>33698165

I'll step in for him. The Italian Horizon's 76mm guns use the Strales system, which include anti-missile targeting radar and supported fire control with guided dart ammunition.

The French one only has the basic Super Rapid gun, they don't use the Strales radar mount with it, meaning their 76mm guns are not really that great at anti-air by comparison. Thats what he means by electronics, likely.

tl;dr - Spagetti have 3x guns with connected gun radar and guided ammo. Frog have 2x guns with no gun radar and no guided ammo.

80 × 40 mm (1.57 in)/56 cal. Bofors guns
49 × 20 mm (0.79 in)/70 cal. Oerlikon cannons

In that other anon's link contains a reference to the SMCC, or the Submarine Command Course.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Submarine_Command_Course

But there's significant cross work between the UK and US in ASW, specifically submarine stuff. There are some things that can't be substantiated, not because they're secretive, but just because they're not published.

Both the Astute class and Virginia class both share technological commonality.

Look at the role the Royal Navy played during the Cold War and continues to play as part of NATO.

the french are odd they call all their major surface vessels frigates but give them all destroyer hull numbers, and refer to several classes of OPV as surveillance frigates. this tends to confuse list compilers hence the wiipedia list of active ships of the french navy calls all their major surface combatants destroyers despite most of them being definitely frigates with only a few being vessels other navies would call destroyers

thus the french navy on most charts is shown as having 11 destroyers and 11 frigates when it actually has 2-6 destroyers (depending on hw u want too class the 4 FREMMs) and 9-5 frigates again dependent on how you class the FREMMS as well as 11 large OPVs
>>
>>33706841
>type 26's will be Anti sub
not exactly, the type 26 will be general purpose with excellent ASW capability, they are getting CAMM, 24 strike length VLS cells and a mission bay, so will be able to do a hell of a lot more than just ASW although they will be the best ASW in europe at the very least.
