What are the upsides and downsides to carry handle mounted optics?
>>
they only mounted them on carry handle because you couldnt remove the handle from the A2.
>>
Easy to knock out of zero and mounted uncomfortably high.

Don't require modification to older rifles, don't interfere with the iron sights, and retro aesthetics.
>>
>>33715064
>downsides
cant find any good colt 3x clones that will keep a zero
authentic are pretty expensive.
>>
Why did they keep the carry handle at all if moving the charging handle made its function useless?
>>
Just needed an excuse to post that picture huh
>>
>>33715064
any period after nam where they actually carried it by the carry handle before some autist drill instructor told people to not do it?
>>
>>33715149
>Have slings
>Use carry handle
>Pointlessly muzzle sweep everyone around you
>Gun is harder to ready

Why
>>
The only upside I can see is to be able to use a scope with a larger front sight. But it would be better to get get a low profile gas block or a flat top upper.

>He uses the carry handle
Reminds me of that cringe video Alex"Trustfund"C. did where he was actually using it like a autist.
>>
>>33715064
Only upside I've found is that it's easier to get a sight picture when using a gas mask, otherwise it's an inferior way to mount optics if you have a choice.
>>
Slings are more useful in some situations, carry handles the other (you can always use both). Plus the aesthetic of course. You decide if the pros outway objective cons (added weight and height, less rail length, less iron sight options)

Train with a carrying handle and you'll notice some of the benefits, I'm just too lazy to list them off right now.
>>
>>33715105
Because the sights till need to be reasonably elevated above the barrel. When mounting optic wasn't widely considered for all or almost all personnel, such as in the era of the A1 and A2, rigid sights were always a plus, so the rear sight wasn't going to be some fold down PoS, it was always going to be there. The rest of the carry handle doesn't add that much weight, gives the sight some extra protection, and, of course gives you another way to carry the rifle when in transport or loading/unloading weapons from shipment.
>>
Anyone know of any good detachable carry handles on the market?

This. And for a tallfag like me, it brings the optic up to a comfy chin weld.
I want this for my next AR, but with that Blood Diamond-style XM177 muzzle device right flush against the front sight.

Learn the difference before you spout shit. Also, try removing the carry handle off an a2 upper
>>
>>33716821
Think he is referring to the original design that had the charging handle inside the carry handle.

Maybe you should learn some things before spouting shit.
>>
>>33715872
Ok, I chicken wing as in my elbow is almost level with my shoulder but below it, just the way I was taught and supposedly it does have advantages when firing standing and not moving.

But why the fuck would your arm be cocked that high? What does that accomplish?
>>
>>33715078
My sig 3x knockoff holds a zero fairly well. Downside is, they have quality control issues; my reticle is slightly off kilter. I only noticed because I read on a forum that some of them were, and now I can't unsee it. Very minute. For the $125 I paid for it I would buy it again.

Obviously.

Look at ops filename and the post he posted that got deleted. He knows.

>>
>>33716838
Easier to open the back of the forging than delete the carry and redesign a rear sight accordingly.

Far less design cost to keep the forgings the same.
>>
>>33716705
But its a great stance for target shooting. I think the idea back then was to teach fundamental marksmen ship and leave all the tacticool stuff up to units/squads ect.

Also when learning accuracy>speed

whats the correct mount and optic for my a1 clone? I want to get something for it like in the OP.
>>
>>33724254

Colt 3x carry handle optic. Or, if you're doing a retro carbine, you could get a single point OEG for Son Tay LARPing.
>>
>>33724254
You would want to look for a Colt 3x20 scope, the mount is built into the scope itself. To be fair there are a lot of clones of those scopes out there and most of them suck balls. Hakko built a lot of the Colt ones and you can occasionally snag one of those relatively cheap.
>>
>>33724360
Ive been looking for hakko ones for about an hour now, not getting much luck. are they still being made?
>>
>>33724774
negative, they moved onto other stuff

i should post this in one the current 'agt' thread, but anyone know of an m16/m4 designed for tank-op use? i think it was based on a car or a2 variant... basically no bunny ears or buttstock and short, very short length
