they're neat rifles, but I wish they were more robust.

The G43 and the M1941 were by far the best rifle designs of the WW2 era (aside from the STG44) and its a shame they were not invented in the mid-1930s and able to be properly researched, refined and built. I think if those 3 designs had come around about 5-6 years earlier, current firearms design would be about 25 years ahead of where it is.

The Gew71 is chambered in .43 Mauser (11mm). She shoots great, bore is really nice, especially for the age (1875).

The 1886 Kropatschek is chambered in a rimmed 8mm round that looks similar to the 6mm lee navy round. The shit is unobtainium but I paid a guy to make some rounds for me and I was able to acquire some original brass. So if anyone ever makes dies for it I can reload. It also is fun to shoot.

how is the g43 a better design than an SVT? It's a gas system copy with a flapper lock bolt, which means no interchangeability for the bolt components without any extensive gunsmithing, and nothing in the rifle is done to reduce recoil

FAQ

>What milsurp should I get as my first gun so that I can become a l33t operator?
None. For practical purposes new guns beat old guns by miles. Milsurp is for historical appreciation. If you want to hunt get a modern hunting rifle, if you want to be l33t get yourself a 'salt weapon.

>OK then, what the BEST milsurp money can buy?
The one you want. Seriously, "best" doesn't enter into the equation, pick a country you like and a time period you like and buy their guns.

even with its flaws (most of the bolt components are interchangeable - ive seen it done numerous times with rebuilt rifles) its still better balanced and more robust than the SVT. The SVT is very finicky rifle that needs to be kept clean to work. The G43 was designed to work covered in mud and never cleaned (Ostfront) and so will beat itself to death over time because of the zero gas regulation. The guns were not meant to be well oiled safe queens. The only other issue the G43s had were with fit/finish (due to war-time slave labor production) and no provision for a bayonet (if you consider that an issue).

Rebump. Also I keep seeing a whole fuckload of convoluted info on .308 pressures compared to 7.62x51 pressures.
People saying that one is higher pressure than the other, ignoring that CUP and PSI aren't the same.
Others say that they're both exactly the same (except for the case thickness) and should be just fine to shoot through any gun, new or old, chambered in either.
>>
>>36063995
Honestly people over state the potential danger of these types of issues. 99% of commercial (Especially American) ammo is loaded as low as they can get away with. Even most reloading manuals have bitch ass poof loads as their max load data. You're most likely never going to frag yourself, unless you're shooting double charged ammo. Or a Lee Navy.

Surplus ammo gets a bit iffy in terms of how it was loaded, so that's is on you to decide if it's something you trust. I don't shoot certain surplus ammo in my semi autos for that reason.

>A very nice Tula Mosin Nagant made in 1939. All numbers match, but the magazine floor plate is a line out. The cleaning rod and sling are included. The included bayonet number does not match. The metal retains good bluing but does have some scratches as typical for surplus war rifles. The stock has been refinished and looks really good. The bore looks good with very strong rifling. Overall, a good looking Mosin.

200+ shipping is fine cause people like numbers like 200 but 190 sounds like your a fuck.

I'm not going to argue with you regarding the gew43 as I have no experience with it, however I do have a ton of experience with a lot of SVTs. I don't know what you mean by saying that the SVT isn't balanced or robust, as it sits very well in my arms when I aim off hand standing. I wouldn't say that the SVT is kar98k-tier robust, however I think that it is robust in it's own right, as every single part except for the piston is absolutely fine in terms of structural integrity, and is able to be fully interchanged without worrying about fitting issues. As I said, the only part which I think requires beyond average attention is the piston, as it does corrode more quickly than you would think. However despite that being said, from an unfortunate personal experience that I've had with the SVT, that experience contradicts what is said about the fragility of the piston.

I took out the SVT innawoods for a weekend to hunt and magdump with some people, put around a total of maybe 200 rounds through it, and didn't think to clean it until the 4rth day (long weekend). I struggled to take the piston cup off and discovered that it rusted itself to the piston. I simply put a round through the rifle and the rust disconnected and I proceeded to take the gun apart and clean. After getting back home and taking the thing apart and cleaning everything, the rust and pitting wasn't deep and cleaned up easily. I took the gun shooting shortly after and it shot just as reliably without a single issue as it did before my rusting incident.

A shot from the rifle was enough to fix itself from some light 3 day surface rust/corrosion on the piston, and the light surface rust was easily cleaned up. That being said, coupled with quite a few other SVTs that I've shot, I've never had any issue with them whatsoever.

Are you being serious? I've honestly never considered that to be a desirable piece. Its too much trouble for your average bubba to flatten, model 30's aren't inlet for a potbelly, and neither would a stock from a sporterized rifle. I also think it's been refinished. There's supposed to be a serial number on the stock. And the receiver is supposed to be finished with glossy black paint.

Does pitting on the outside equate to pitting on the inside? I will explain more.

So here's the thing, I've got this really badass Luftwaffe Kar98k that hasn't been fucked with/not Russian capture. Only thing that might hurt value is it was factory rebarreled during the war (sure it's time period accurate but idk)

The bore is red which I think is rust, other anons said that I should clean it and check for pitting. I've got a deal set up to sell for $1,200 on Thursday. If I know that the barrel is pitted I will capitalize on that cash. I don't have time to clean tomorrow so is it possible to tell if the barrel is pitted by seeing pic related on the outside??

Definitely no4 enfield. If you’re not restricted to the big 3, the m39 is up there too - not the best bolt but workable, very fun to shoot

>>36069105
I find Mausers pretty boring to shoot honestly, but I'm likely in the minority. There's certainly nothing wrong with any of them though, apart from possibly the 1889s because parts are fucking rare for them.

I'd suggest something French because I am a Frankaboo and like a large variety in my collection. But a Mauser or 10 will serve you just fine and most are in easier to find calibers to shoot (though not necessarily any cheaper).

>>
One thing that concerns me, and was not visible in the sellers pic, Is that there appears to be a line of rust or pitting where the barrel meets the wood. Tomorrow I might brave taking it apart, and seeing if the barrel is still in good condition.
>>
>>36069315
>8mm lebel has that weird taper, is it easy to reload?
Yes and no, depending how much you care about historically accurate loading. You have very, very few bullets selections in the technically correct .329 bullet diameter. But you can get away with .323 bullets very easily, with acceptable (sometimes great) levels of accuracy. But other than that its no more difficult to reload than other milsurp rifle calibers.
>Lebel, Berthier, or MAS-36 and why?
Mas 36, if you cannot get all 3. It's the most practical, cheapest to shoot, and easiest to shoot.

I got lucky with mine - $350.

Typically for a correct German one you're looking at $700-1500 depending on condition and numbers matching.

The Polish reworks typically go between $250-600.

2nd from the bottom is the 98
I scored the rifle at the LGS for $250 since it was in the wrong stock.

Then a couple months ago a complete 98a stock set came in with a huge collection of stocks to the LGS. Thanks to the cheerleader effect, no one (including me) noticed it for weeks. $100 for the stock. badda-bing badda-boom. Its not matching but for the price, IDGAF.

My favorite deal was my early Gew71, ALL matching. $250.

I was in Vegas and theres a shop across the street from the Gold n Silver Pawn Shop (Pawn Stars from history channel), and one of the dealers there always has milsurp stuff.

Was looking on one trip and saw a bolt handle sticking out from under a Swede helmet and a pile of uniforms and crap. I knew it was a mauser handle, but it did not look right for a 98.....so I had the guy dig it out. I almost shit my pants when I saw what it was. Then I saw the tag....$350.....decided to press my luck (no whammies) and asked if they would take $250. Shopkeep called the seller and the seller was so happy to have the huge gun out of his case that (i could hear him on the phone from 5ft away) he said "and hes going to take it out of there today? sell it to him already". $250 cash - was hard to keep poker face.

I figured it was worth going for the discount given the amount of crap that was piled on top of it -- meant it had been there for awhile and no one realized or appreciated that it was worth more than everything else in the case combined.

Well guys, I took my recently aquired Norwegian Navy used 1938 manufactured K98k out of the stock. Probably the first time in decades.

This is what I was greeted by. It looks like it got some moisture between barrel and stock at some point and developed pitting. It seems to be quite old though. There's no active rust from what I can tell. Is the rifle safe to shoot? The previous owner had no issues with it.

The rifling is near mint. It's nice and shiny with great lands and grooves. Also the old "stick a bullet in the muzzle" check shows veery tight rifling. A friend estimates less than 3k rounds through it.

It was just a bit of a shock to see when I took it out the stock.

It would have been a shame if it was fucked because I really like the history on it. It was made in the year of the Anschluss of Austria and saw action in Norway. I like that cause my Grandfather is an Austrian who was drafted into the Wehrmacht and served as an artilleryman in Norway. Good to have a piece of history of my country and my family that I can enjoy on the range.

I know the feeling. I just got the K98k in post above and I already want something else. Thinking of getting my handgun license and a P38 to complement it. Or maybe some other bolt action.

You could try and get a Nambu pistol to complement the Type 99. I heard they're pretty terrible tho.

You got a lot of choice in milsurp. Seeing as you got a Type 99 you have a variant of the Mauser action so you might not want to get something too similar. Maybe an Enfield, Nugget, or K31. If you're ok with rare ammo you could get an M95, Carcano, Lebel, Berthier, MAS 36, and such.

I'm going by Austrian ammo availability, so your mileage may vary.

Thats the beauty and the curse of milsurp.

Theres so many makes, models, variants, eras and price ranges that its 100% impossible to be truly "finished" collecting.

I know guys in their late 60's/early 70's with THOUSANDS of firearms....that are still buying things they don't already have.......

Its a cruel world, but milsurp will always be there for you. It will never judge you and seldom let you down. You can rest easy knowing that long after you are gone and forgotten, your milsurp will live on and bring joy to countless future generations.

So buckle up gents, the ride never ends.
>>

maybe im not a true firearms enthusiast, or rather not a true firearms development enthusiast but there are some guns I genuinely have no interest buying. if it doesnt look cool or have some meaning to me personally I dont really care to buy it. for example, Im more likely to buy another variant or manufacturer of a rifle I already own and like than pick up something new that doesnt really speak to me

Austria, my dude.
Compared to some other European countries it's pretty good.

Manually cycled arms are legal at 18 with only registration required. Bolt action, lever action, pump action rifles, shotguns and such.

Handguns and semi autos require a license. You can get pretty much any pistol but there's a list of allowed semi autos. We can get the AUG, Ar15s, Sig 550 and some other ones. No AKs tho.

Pump action shotguns are considered war material though because our politicians had a brainfart in the 90s.

I picked up a beautiful 1891 Argentine at a gun show a few days ago. I'm fairly new to shooting (only shot some .22s I inherited and some friends' guns), and I have a couple questions. First, what's a good sling to get for it? I'd prefer it to be at least somewhat "period correct," but I'm willing to get a 1907 sling or something for it. Second, what's good ammo for it? is the PPU stuff okay? I've only been able to find reloads locally, would they be alright? Sorry for such a long post, but as I said I'm pretty new to all this, this is the firs gun I've bought myself and I want to treat her right.
>>
>>36073297
PPU is good quality stuff. The brass is good for reloading, and it's affordable. They do load on the lighter side. Never shoot some random person's reloads.

I know nothing about Argentinian slings. Google is a good tool.

PPU should be fine in your Argentine. I've been shooting PPU 7mm out of my 1895 Chilean and I've had no problems with it at all.

>>36072745
Well it probably won't go that far but it's good that we're finally getting some leadership that's not scared of securing our sovereignty. They're finally putting their foot down in regards to immigration.Maybe they'll even stand up to the EU regarding gun rights. Would be nice.

The original Argie M91 slings were ~1" wide, black leather with brass slider and a button end. Later domestic Argentine ones were green-tanned leather with black hardware. Those Portuguese and Spanish Mauser slings would be a decent substitute.

I have a small question about maintaining older milsurp weapons from the 40s and before. How bad is it to get gun oil on the stocks? I use standard stuff like rem oil and outers gun oil and then put them in gun socks and into the dehumidified safe. Especially with the socked guns some oil could potentially go off the metal and onto the wood. If any oil gets on the wooden stocks is it at risk of permanently damaging them? What is the best solution for keeping them rust free?

To tell you the truth I looked at the 1903 and discussed it with my shooting buddy's before you ever posted in these threads. I even considered getting it. What stayed my hand was:

1) not dealing on gunbroker before
2) feedback rating/lack of dealing history
3) comment's in this thread about recycled pic's (I'm a long time ebay'er and original pics is a must. If you want to get a few hundred dollars get a non potato camara and some lights. I recently sold an Atari Jaguar with working CD player and pic for proof by three games that the CD player worked and that started a bidding war)
4) just bought a M1 Garand and being Christmas time and having two big gun shows comming up in January I'm wanting to conserve money
5) you are presenting youself as pushy for a sale which is negative. Desperate people do desperate things
6) gunbroker lacks quality buyer protection
7) as a plus as I remember you take paypal. Since it was bought by ebay it it works by ebay standards no matter the transaction i.e."when in doubt fuck the seller" thats the reason many places dropped it or had their account suspended.

If anything based on the post you should buy shit to up your rating and feedback or dump the account and start afresh.
