Since OP forgot, and I'm a nice guy.

FAQ

>What milsurp should I get as my first gun so that I can become a l33t operator?
None. For practical purposes new guns beat old guns by miles. Milsurp is for historical appreciation. If you want to hunt get a modern hunting rifle, if you want to be l33t get yourself a 'salt weapon.

>OK then, what the BEST milsurp money can buy?
The one you want. Seriously, "best" doesn't enter into the equation, pick a country you like and a time period you like and buy their guns.

>Where do you guys get your guns?
Pawn shops
Gun shows
Gunbroker
Armslist
Private sales

Is it doable to get an arisaka these days? I don't reload, yet, so type 99 the way to go ammo price wise? Are they bought for collection or can i shoot with it? Not many rounds of course, just once in awhile.

Both cost between $27-$35 a box of twenty when you can find it. You should reload if you plan on getting any Arisaka.

Picked up my IHC M1-Garand today. Did the research on the numbers and looks like it's a slight mix on dates for parts but otherwise:

Receiver = IHC
Bolt = IHC
Op Rod = IHC
Trigger Group = IHC
Front sight = IHC "Wide"
Rear Sight Windage = IHC
Gas Screw = IHC
Hammer = IHC
Barrel = LRM Jan 54 (correct supplier/year)
Stock = whammy (non IHC)

Paid $1,195 for it. Stock is rough but I don't mind since it looks like I'm in the market for a IHC stock now to make it "basically" complete IHC.
>>
>>36079805
It's gotta be correct. The LMR dates were steadily increasing. There are a few oddities, like #5652918 having a 12-54 barrel. Yeah WW2 SA and WRA are easy to figure out. Everything else is almost impossible.

Not really other than what the ad described. I'm not fully schooled on it as of this moment. A few threads ago I described myself as tacticool in my youth. Now that I got off my ass and far after time, started to get into milsurp, I'm reacquainting myself to things.

I'm kicking myself over time past when milsurp was cheap and when a Noz' was $60 or free with purchase of a crate of ammo.

>>36079922
Also to tell you back in high school 91-95 I was a member of my school rifle team (shooting sports). In the summer there was high-power shooting thru DCM (now CMP) so I shot M1's, competed with M1's, and cleaned M1s: this is now when I actually owned one (tho I'm still super jelly over my coaches M14).

>>36080388
Link wont load so I cant view the listing. Garand accuracy drops quite a bit once you hit 2+ erosion but is very resilient from 3 onwards in terms of military accuracy standards. Of course it will depend on each particular rifle. I have rifles that look like they should be shot out that group great and rifles that have really crisp rifling that dont dont shoot nearly as well as expected

What color sling should I get for my martini henry? White or brown leather? I think the white looks pretty cool, but the brown is more classic.

Also, I tried to take the handguards off today, but both screws on both handguard rings were threaded in from the left. The rear one is siezed and the screw is kinda buggered. The front one will only turn clockwise, where it tightens the ring but pushes the nut(?) holding it in place out of the ring. Counterclockwise will not budge.

I couldn't get over the horrible import markings and mill marks from removing the arsenal stamp. I picked up an older CAI import off gunbroker that was more discretely marked and has the diamonds for the same price. If you can get over those things I think it's a pretty good deal though. Just went to the National Firearms museum in Fairfax, Va yesterday. Pretty much all their war series weapons I would rate at about fair to very good. They have a 1903 with perdersen device, never saw one in person before that, it was in very good condition. They also had excellent condition blued winchester 97 and 12 trench shotguns, which looked beautiful. Pretty much the entire museum is filled with the collections of 2 donors. I wanted to post pics, but I pics are too large, and im on phone atm.

>they could have fixed the caliber issue anytime, but they were too busy eating crepes and practicing their mime routines.
A large part of that is the French idea that handguns were status symbols first and weapons second. They didn't change their attitudes until after WW2.
>>
>>36083749
The French and Germans saw how useful pistols were in trench warfare and so continued to use them heavily. I had a great uncle who fought in north Africa and he would talk about how he would find his troops dead sometimes because they would capture a german, go to search him, and the soldat would pull out a .32acp pocket gun and pop 'em

I found a genuine Gewehr 98 (not turkish) at a seedy pawn shop for $295. 1916, Danzig, the forestock and vanguard have been cut down to sporter but otherwise intact. Buttstock has original Prussian proof marks on it, receiver seems to be matching with a nearly perfect finish, barrel is full length and still has original Lange-Vizier sights. Should I do it?

Yes. I have kept my supernumerary Vz.98/22 just in case I need some German-proofed parts to rebuild a Gew.98.

Or you can buy a brand new replacement furniture set from Fox Military, though it will probably cost you what you'd pay for the rifle.

>>
>>36086282
Yeah, I bought one many years ago for about 400 bucks.
A few things:
1: the stock trigger is heavy. as in you could lift up the rifle by the trigger without firing it. I had to mod it.
2: the rifle is made with Nordic steel and arctic wood so it weighs as much as a million suns, that's before you load up the 72rnd drum. This means no recoil whatsoever.
3: the drums are cheap so thats good.
4: Repairs are cheap, as there are still parts kits out there for under 200 bucks.

Oh God here goes.

Well firstly they say that the actual 'place of Finland' is just Eastern Sweden. Helsinki is in Eastern Sweden and when people fly there it's not like they would notice.

World maps are altered as it's a U.N conspiracy to keep people believing in Finland. And the idea that an entire country is made up seems so bizarre that nobody would ever believe it, making it easy to do.

Finland's main company, Nokia, is apparently owned by the Japanese and they're a main player in this.

Now as for 'why' people would want to invent Finland as a country that's a bit more in depth and there's a few reasons as to why Sweden and Russia go along with it but it's mostly to do with Japanese fishing rights.

You see the Japanese love their sushi but tight fishing regulations and public outcry mean they can't fish as much as they want. So after the Cold War they agreed with Russia to create a 'landmass' called Finland where they could fish. After all, if people thought there was a country there nobody would expect the Japanese to be harpooning whales would they?

The fish is then transported through Russia where a small percentage of the food is given to the population, (they were of course starving at the time of Finland being invented), and then is shipped to Japan under the disguise of 'Nokia' products. Japan is apparently one of the worlds largest importers of Nokia products despite the fact that 'nobody there owns a Nokia phone' apparently.

The crux of all this however, and my favourite part, is the homage that the Japanese gave to this entire conspiracy theory.

What do fish have? Fins. Therefore they named their imaginary country Finland.

I'm no expert but if thouse rifles come with the original bayonet I would find it hard to walk away from the price listed. Bayonets seem to be up there in price.

If it was me I would get them both. I will warn that they are on my target list of want and I'm not a poorfag and I'm finding the market limited in my area.

My basis is a M1917 is around $600-$800 (bought mine for $670 ) and it's less desirable than a M1903 on the market plus bayonets as I see are (especially sword) seem to be around $150-$250 or so from the looks of things.

Also a "low number" 03 would be less in value due to it being an non-shooter. Early 03's had receiver hardening problems until Springfield studied the hardening processes being done to the 1917.

Just my $0.02

A3's are good to go. Springfield fixed the problem way back around SN 800,000 iirc on the 03's.

>>36091287
Savage Mk1 definitely had Mk1 sights. Early 1* used up what they had, then they transferred over to the L sight. Mine is somewhere in the middle of production. The stamped Mk3 and 4 sights were used on British rifles made in '43.
>>
>>36091276
I mean, what brand of 8mm? If you can, buy some of the surplus ammo, or just buy PPU off GB.
>>
>>36091609
There's Lebel and Berthier rifles on gunbroker right now.

Looks like an Argentine cavalry carbine rear sight (anchor marking) and stock (notice the bayonet lug and lack of a pistol grip in the stock), Czech post-war trigger guard. Looks like it could just be a bubba special? Receiver marking is incorrect for a 1908, and if it was scrubbed and re-stamped it would have been rechambered in the refurbishment process.

6.5 is optimum for external ballistics. That means less than people want it to, but it still means something.

>>36088412

That's pretty badass. I'll give you $200 for it. That'sa 100% RoI.

>>36090498

With bayonet that's a decent price.

>>36091363

They're no better or worse than most other Mausers. They do have relatively good sights IIRC compared to most rifles because the US focuses on marksmanship.

If you want a range gun get a K31, pic related. You can still get Swiss surplus, which is considered match grade, for dirt cheap, the guns themselves were made for accuracy and most of them have excellent bores still.
>>
>>36091633
Interesting. I've been emailing Brian Dick who is something of an enfield guru about this maltby, he seems to think the mk3 is appropriate so I may go with that as the stamped ladders are my favorite enfield rear
>>
>That SGAmmo link that's been deleted

On the one hand that's a good price, on the other hand I don't really need match ammo...
>>
>>36091277
Op from responses, a3's are basically WWII era so are good. If the SN# is less than 800000 for a 03 then it is questionable for hardening. Sorry for you being a fun nut in CA.

>shoot my kids
I'll admit I'm a single no kids guy tho I wish life would have turned out different . I have a hell of a time with my will for distribution of my arsenal, my family is anti-nofuns but my nephew has a desire, but only 10yo and can't handle my arsenal except my 100yo single shot inherited .22LR. I have a form 4 transferable full giggle SMG and cringe at the fact that I may accidentally die before a relative with some appreciation comes of age to recive it.
>>
>>36091891
Their match ammo is fucking great though, and it's not like it's more expensive than their regular 8mm most of the time.
>>36091335

>no idea what kinds of moa id get on these relics.
You should be able to hit a man sized target, but that's it, and don't be surprised if you miss.
>>36091609
Lebels pop up now and then, Berthiers are much more common though.Of the two types, Lebels are more fun and practical, because they don't require expensive clips to shoot.
>>
>>36091968
How expensive are Berthier clips?
>>
>>36091858
That's cool. Has he figured out when it was made?

Here's a Mk4 sight. It's a Mk3 but the slide latch was changed to lessen the chance of it snagging on stuff.

It's about 10 cents more per round than regular, 30 cents more than Romanian surplus. Since the furthest I can realistically see myself shooting an 8mm is about 200 yards I'm not convinced it's worth even that premium.
>>
>>36092025
Its a '41, so says the receiver.
>>
>>36091695
There's one lebel and two berthier rifles, all overpriced. One of the berthiers is mixmatch M16 for $800 and the other is remshit for upwards of $1k. I don't remember the lebel and I am busy but it was very expensive
>>
>>36092075
Nice. That's how it should be. I think they sanded off my original markings on>>36088202, painted over it, and re-did the markings with an electro pencil.

Probably just wanted it to jive with the true mk2 aesthetic, they got really into electro penciling post war.

It's a good chance that it's not an actual 1888 produced Lebel. So many that have come back from Afghanistan have been scrubbed and redated to pre1898 dates. What's the maker and serial number prefix?
>>
>>36093005
>>36094252
WOW! That's a super early Maltby produced gun. IT's actually been FTR'd twice. First by Maltby itself (the FTR over the M on the left) and later by Fazakerley in 1948. Those Maltby FTRs are rare. Not that it really adds any value, just neatness.
>>
>>36095670
It's not that early but yeah, too bad it's not in better shape and unmolested. IIRC when I was looking it was around the end of '41. But I do like the fact it's been FTR'd twice, I wish it could talk and tell me what it saw.
