What sights do you guys run on your ak's?

I'm looking to get a scope for my .308 vepr but I'm unsure whether to get a variable scope or a fixed scope. if I were to go variable I was looking for 1x6. I won't be shooting further than 500 yards. If I were to go fixed I'm thinking of getting a 4x. What's a good 4x fixed scope? I feel a little awkward slapping an acog on my vepr yet I also heard that pso-1 aren't that great.

Thoughts?

The black ring is 14 inches in diameter to give you an idea what 4x looks like at 400 yards.
I just used a romanian tip-2 scope on mine. I've used 4/6/8x scopes in the past and I like 4x best. I love the wide field of vision it offers, and it's a very adequate zoom. And I hate the extra weight of the 8x42 scope especially bad, it's just so bulky.
I normally stick to irons though for weight sake. I feel like optics are a bit better when I'm shooting at my 400 yard steel, but the extra weight isn't worth it in most cases.

I had a couple friends like that. It was made even worse when they'd try to dick measure after I showed them something I got that I thought was cool and they'd pull out a Tapco'd WASR or something. OK man, I was just asking if you wanted to shoot my SLR but yeah, that's totally what Russian SOF uses.

I'd agree with that, but the poorfag comment screams sour grapes.

It's actually kind of the opposite. I have meme guns that I bought used for dirt cheap. I shoot better than him with everything, I even pick up his brand new guns and shoot them better than him. But then he like, lords his gear over me. IDGAF, I'm just having fun but he actually takes this stuff pretty seriously. He makes fun of my keymod when I would be fine with having a slick side handguard because I don't plan on attaching a bunch of shit. He even took out a loan to get a "better" car than me and now he talks shit about my car that I paid for in full the day I bought it. This is why I don't tell people I own guns. It attracts fucking weirdos.

I know the kit you're talking about if it's on the files. Dude started around a grand, but really I think he's still too high at $800. I've seen original barrel aks-74 kits go for a lot less than that, and most of them were in good shape too. I've picked up a couple like-new/unissued bulgy barrel-less kits around $300-350 shipped, so I'd pass on that until he comes down some more unless you just gotta have it now.
>>
>>36468081

Wew vlad, you could buy three presses, a drill press and bit/reamer set for that much. Are you building this yourself or paying someone to do it. Hell, I'd populate your barrel and set headspace for some parts or mags + return shipping, shit's easy and takes like fifteen minutes if you don't count drilling for pins. Just saying, it's really not a good deal at all. It'd be a good deal if it was a Russian kit maybe, but it's not.

So is steel jacketed the same as a steel casing?

Trying to figure out if my local range will let me shoot an AK
>>
>>36469179
Most steel cased ammo has a mild steel bimetal jacket coated in a thin layer of copper. The only brand I know of that doesn't is Hornady's 7.62 and 5.45 steel cased ammo which will pass the magnet test.
>>
>>36469179
Steel jacket refers to the bullet's jacket only, case is only the case that's left after firing.
Some ranges don't want steel core, steel(bimetal) jacketed, or steel cased ammo, and there's just no reasoning with them.
Anything with a steel case generally has a steel(bimetal) jacketed bullet that will stick to a magnet. There might be exceptions, but your range probably won't care.
>>
>>36469212
>>36469215
Yeah my range uses the magnet test, is Hornady's more expensive than regular ammo?
>>
>>36469155
I'd assume so, if you're worried about it you could find some bulgarian mags for a similar price but I'm too poor for Arsenal so I wouldn't know

I think it has tiny holes under the handguard. I suspect at least a new barrel, trunnion and bolt will be needed. Other than that, there’s the three welds you saw, plus the hammer is welded to the back of the bolt.

I’ve never done it before, but I’m sure there’s enough specially jigs and tools and shit out there that I can do it.
Any particular brand of barrel you’d recommend? I was thinking about just getting a 74 parts kit for the other items I’ll need.

Seconding this, I came here to ask the exact same question.
In particular though, I keep seeing people bitching about getting WASRs with canted front sights and gas blocks. I was going to buy from Classic, but would it be worth it to pay extra and buy from Atlantic since they claim to do QC?
If I inspect it at the FFL and it's fucked, can I just have them send it back for one that isn't?

Canted sights are annoying but otherwise fine as long as you can zero the rifle. If you're gun looks like >>36468141 then obviously it's bad but having to push the drum a little further to the left than normal is fine unless it really really bothers you.
>>
Anyone ever bought from rusmilitary.com?
>>
>>36471824

The mags dont show much curvature on the listing
>>
>>36471830
That's a common issue with that series of rifles. I've owned one and no doubt if you want a good starter AK, the WASR is the best option. You may see small companies building AKs or bigger companies but the risks you run are unknown/highly varying quality or screw build tier stuff. Those canted front sight posts are fixable and if you tire it the rifle is easily sellable. The American AKs? Only fools or highly naive guys thinking they'll be lucky buy them.

If you don't like the rifles condition you can send it back but look up the policy of the company before you buy. If you say fuck it than for sure buy w/e and tell us how stupid we are but if you do end up in the hospital or at a monetary loss, swallow your pride and report back.
>>
>>36471820

Bakelites in 30 and 40 round varities

>>
>>36478187

Thanks for the pics m8

>>36478288

7.62x39

I'd go with the 40 rnd bake right now. I'm wanting one bad but can't justify the prices bakes are going for all of a sudden. I'll probably have to be happy with the 3 I have until I die.
>>36478093
I'm impressed.
>>
>>36478335
After seeing some pics what would you say I can sell it for?
>>
>>36478182
Can you elaborate? I’m new to AKs
>>
>>36478360
$700 and a Saiga apparently. I'd do that and then spend the $700 converting the Saiga properly.
>>
>>36478353
Not bad man, I'd scoop it up for 600
I am looking to buy SAIGAs myself but have resorted to picking up a WASR10 to accompany my SAIGA in my safe.

>>36478360
Couldnt tell you man, last gun store I worked at was in Maryland around the time the AWB went through. Even then all we had were WASR10 aks. Sorry man.

>>36478391
this man is right tho, sounds like you are getting a good deal. You most certainly COULD send the saiga off to get it converted properly AND have enough left over for a six pack and a pizza
