Let's do this!
>>
What are some good signs of a used 870 that shows it is non-Freedom Group? All I can think of is a metal trigger group. Do all plastic trigger guards have that gay ass REMINGTON sctript on them?
>>
>>36763406
The best bet for a non-shitty Remington would be if it is stamped "Mossberg".
>>
>>36763438
Okay no-guns, let's get some real opinions in here
>>
>>36763465

Older 870s are your best bet if your heart is set on getting one.
>>
>>36763480
Yeah, no shit. That's why the dude said "non-freedom group"
Seems like they are looking for ways to easily identify the older models. My best advice is to look for wear on the gun, but I guess people want a nice one, no matter how old.
>>
>>36763465
>being this triggered by the fact that Remington hasn't made very good guns for a long time

>>36763498
If you knew anything about Remington's QC, they don't even need to be triggered.

there were plenty of good Remingtons that used the new-at-the-time plastic trigger guard. The biggest red flag is the word "Express" being stamped anywhere on it, or having that fake ass wood poly material for the stock and foregrip. If you handle an old Wingmaster the difference is inescapable. The Expresses had rough periods ever since they began but the mid 90's is when the shit wagon really got rolling and '07 is when the horses ran off the cliff. Here's what my '01's stock looked like in '02 when I bought it off a friend. Not too hard to take care of but the rust was already on the bastard when he handed it to me. It spread down the barrel and across the nut in a thin sheen but never got worse.
>>
>>36763856
Thanks. I'm bidding on Magnum varieties, all have the metal guard. There are some Wingmasters for $300 that have rust spots. Mostly near the trigger and the pins. I've got 1980's vintage 1100's with some small surface rust in areas. Nothing that worries me.
If I get one of these older models, what should I replace right away? I figure the magazine spring and follower and give it a good cleaning.

How dose nickel /chrome plating compare to a stainless steel?
I've head stories of it actually melting off with heavy use, heat or even just age, wear & tear.
>>
>>36764095
Why not the ATI plastic version then?
The negative aspects of the LEO folding stock are overblown.
>>

Nobody makes a fuckin stainless steel shotgun faggot. Mossberg uses a proprietary finish called Marinecote.

they are old an expensive and are bare metal with 90 degree angles for a cheekweld

870 collector here.
Its pretty easy to distinguish older models from newer ones. Find a wingmaster, the tolerances are tighter and they have better parts- basically "forged vs cast".
Barrels have date codes.
Checkering styles changed- this is the easiest way to identify in gunshops/online brokers.

Top in pic is a 1966. This checkering pattern is machine pressed and used on standard field grade wignmasters and TB grades up to the early 80's. This is what you want.
TC's have hand checkering (all years).

And you shouldn't have to replace anything on a wingmaster (yes they come in magnum).
>>
>>36764095
is that Knoxx/Blackhawk version still available?

>>36764110
I guess it is possible with neglect. I've seen chrome rims go to shit after years of use on salted roads. Stainless would be a better way to go as long as it isn't polished to high hell. But remember, it is stainLESS steel, not stainproof. So again, care is needed.

That it isn't coated in rust, the internals don't look like they were machined with a piece of flint, and that it doesn't say Express or Wingmaster on it.
>>
>>36764190
How big of an issue is light surface rust on older models? I'm looking for a shotgun to use, not a safe queen.
>>
>>36764307
I'm bidding online. No real option to look at the internals unless the seller went apeshit with the pictures.
Why not one that says Wingmaster?

All of mine show wear and virtually no rust. I'll get a pic of my newest acquisition here in a second (tablet has a potato cam, gotta use phone). It has the most amount of wear, but basically no rust.

>>
>>36764766
Eh, I bid $300 on a 870 Magnum. Looks in good shape and has all metal trigger group. I'm not looking to spend more than $350 on a used gun. If I get outbid, I'll try to stick to Police Mag and Wingmasters.
>>
>>36764817
There's still issues compared to the older models (mim parts).
Even freedom group has some nice guns. Its like there's 2 guys in the shop that give a shit and make nice guns while the rest just slap shit together for a paycheck. If you get a gun from one of those guys, your good.
But its a gamble.
And Remington started going downhill before the buyout. Early 90's was the start of their fall.
>>
>>36764817
Just out of curiosity, what's the date code on the barrel?

serial numbers?

isn't there some info out there as far as serial numbers corresponding to certain years of production? that's how it is for most guns
>>

Yes and no.
Serial numbers are kind of erratic. They "can" be accurate, but not always.
Barrel codes are reliable, but that's assuming the barrel is original and not all have serial numbers.

I think the 590 is a little better. I picked up a 500 kit from big box sporting good store for 300 dollars. 18 inch home defense barrel and 28 inch hunting barrel. Easy to swap them out. The wingmaster still aren't like the old ones.
Mim casting (metal injection molding powder metal processing) compared to drop forged pieces.
At the end of the day mim parts are reliable, but the forged and stamped pieces are better. Its just a quest to reduce less waste in the manufacturing process while still being "acceptable".

Unless you leave it out in the blazing sun 24/7, then yes, it's vastly exaggerated. Most decent firearms polymer also have chemical treatments and coatings to make it hold up better. I don't doubt for a second that a Glock 17 will last for a century at the least.

Its a much higher quality than express models.
It would last a lifetime. Police magnums are fairly common, but that one looks to be in about as good of condition you can get for Leo guns.
Don't go overboard with trying to outbid someone. Even though its a magnum, you're not far from TB/TC grade at that price.
Reminder that >>36764429 Sold for $425. And >>36764190 was $495, with sling mounts, trigger shoe and era correct Morgan adjustable recoil pad (along with graded wood).

Magnum rounds have their place, but for an HD gun its overkill.
If you want to swap out the barrel for something longer and plan on running 2 3/4" shells, then you'd be better off buying a different gun.

Plus its a cylinder choke, the spread is huge on it. You would need a barrel swap to use outdoors.

It would be put into HD role. I bought PIC RELATED for $100. It's just been sitting in my closet for years. So I don't want to put it on something nice. I don't think I'll use 3" loads, as everything else I own is 2 3/4". However, I wouldn't be opposed to buying a 3" receiver.

Pretty rough. Have the barrel properly hacked down to 18", then have it properly recrowned by a smith. I'd suggest trying to fit a choke, too.

Cerakoting the outside of the barrel and receiver might not be a bad idea either, the finish is looking rough. Don't have to even bake it on, just spray it and let it air dry. Or cold blue it.

Rock Island Armory has the M5, a High Standard Flite King knockoff that goes two for three on your list--just is missing the ghost rings. Really smooth and dirt cheap--new for around $200.

I never understood the hate in the first place it's literally a 590 receiver with a 14" barrel and a raptor grip.

Why do people say shotguns suck vs rifles? If we're talking a defense situation in my home I'd rather have a shotgun, and you can still pull a little range out of it. Different tools for different things really.

Literally what?
>>
>>36764378
Based on what? Nickel plating is more resistant to corrosion, won't gall, and has more lubricity

The only advantage stainless steel has is that you can buff out rust spots or defects whereas plating defects are pretty fucked

I used to have a nickel plated Remington Model 10.

That thing was truly a pile of dogshit, the barrel was chopped off at 23 inches, I had to beat the piss out of it to take it down, it wouldn't cycle for shit, and it had a horribly uncomfortable homemade abomination of a stock.

On the bright side, it got me into cheap old shotguns, and I was able to trade it for a much nicer Stevens 520 later on down the road.

Here's my 520. I had a gunsmith cut it down to riot length and put a bead on it.

It was fun to shoot but a little unreliable at times, and ended up getting sold so I could buy a Winchester Model 12.
>>
>>36792157
Here's the current collection.
Found another Model 10 at a local store for $100, it's rough externally but works flawlessly. Definitely restored my faith in the Model 10.

The double barrel is an Enders Special Service 20 gauge I found for $90, needed a new firing pin but otherwise works great.

Finally, the Winchester M12 was a gun show find that was fitted with an aftermarket poly choke, I had a smith cut it down and I'm waiting on a forend wrench to swap out the slide for a riot-style corncob forend.

>>36781084
Not a bad deal, that's got a lot of character. I actually kinda dig the mismatched furniture and the vent rib, I'd clean up the crown and leave it as is.

>>36788076
I didn't realize Ithaca was getting in on the shockwave meme. That's pretty neat. I'd a lot more interested in their new guns if they were 2-3 times the price of a used Ithaca in good condition. I wish they'd sell that trench handguard separately. I need one.

I used to have one of these on my 500. It should fit, but it leaves a pretty awkward gap between the grip and the trigger. I imagine it's so you can hit the slide release, but it doesn't look that great and it makes the reaching the trigger a bit of a stretch. As with any pistol grip on a Mossberg, it also makes manipulating the safety a little challenging. The length of pull is pretty long, too.

All that aside, I thought it was a neat stock, kinda had that retro SWAT look, and the gun handled decently with it. I paid like $40 for it out of a bargain bin at my local gun store, I don't think I'd pay much more for one.

Ahh, I meant to say I'd be more interested if they *weren't* 2-3 times the price of nice used guns. I really should have proofread that before posting.

But yeah, I really couldn't justify getting one at their current prices. Honestly even at $500 I'd pass, it's just too easy to find nice used ones for dirt cheap.

Still, that shockwave one would be tits with a stock/grip a little more like pic related, whatever they've got mounted to it is a little goofy looking.

Got a 590A1 recently. Patterns damn well, don't have any misses on a man-sized target until like 40 yards and that's with S&B buckshot I bought cheap as hell.

My first combat shotgun and it's quickly become my most favorite gun. It's just so much fun loading it, pumping it, etc. Fucking blast. Might switch to it from my AR for home defense.

Looking for a side saddle and sling, any suggestions?
>>

No pawnships here have FFL's. It's odd, really.
There's maybe one a hour or so away, but doesn't look that promising.
>>
Does anyone here know what kind of effect, if any, straight rifling would have in a shotgun? I've seen some claims online about it improving the pattern slightly, but they aren't really consistent as to what ways it improves the pattern.
>>
>>36793062
I doubt it would really have much effect on shot patterns since that is dependent on the wad and choke, not really rifling

Maybe it would increase slug precision but even then I am not sure

I bought an aluminum 6-shot carrier from Mesa Tactical a few years back. It's Beefy and durable, installs easy and the little strip of Santoprene that retains the shells gives the perfect amount of resistance for holding the shells in. They make 'em in polymer now too if you're nuts about saving weight.
