Yea. The stock hasn’t been refinished like one anon said. It’s in excellent shape other than this, which wasn’t taken in the pictures of the auction. Trying to decide if I should bitch about this because it was listed as “no cracks in stock”
>>
>>36781966
How do you like how it breaks down ? It’s such a strange manual of arms. One reason I bought this one is it had a really good stock disk on it, obviously a lot has changed in 70 years but I still think the better the disk rating the more collectible it it.

>>

I'd complain if it wasn't mentioned or pictured. Naybe ask for some money back. If you aren't pleased with the rifle overall I wouldn't sit on it, especially with a $1700 pricetag. If you do keep it that crack should repair easy clamped with some wood glue.

Carbines were originally intended for cavalry and support troops. They aren't usually serving in the front lines and thus bayonets are just wasted weight. The M44 was developed due to the urban warfare in Stalingrad showing that long rifles were pointlessly long and something shorter would be a good thing, but since the M38 didn't have a mount for a bayonet and front-line troops might need them they developed a folding bayonet.

Also the 91/59 is another version that lacks a bayonet, they were 91/30s that were cut down after the war, everything I read says that no one knows exactly who did it but it was probably the Hungarians.

If you're really concerned about ammo availability 7mm is easily (though not necessarily cheaply) found, and 7.5 French is pretty available online, and cheaper than 8mm Lebel. So either a Mas 36 or a 1893 Mauser would be my recommendations.

Well I just found out that my Type 38 carbine is chambered in $2 bills, so I'm starting to get into reloading.

7.5 French is inexplicably cheaper and more common than .303 around me despite practically nobody selling any French rifles anywhere.

>>
>>36789278

The Lebel is treated as the God Of Guns because the round uses smokeless powder. Most people don't talk about how the actual gun was designed to the current systems of the time, like having a tube magazine, and was thus entirely surpassed by it's contemporaries in a matter of just a couple years. From a practical perspective the only thing revolutionary about the gun wasn't even the gun, so it's overrated.

>>36789303

I'm resisting the siren's call of reloading because I don't shoot much, but sooner or later I'll cave.

That may not be the conversion date. The “P” means that the rifle was privatized, the “20” underneath is likely the year that was done because if not, then the rifle would just have a “P” with no date which means automatically it was privatized post 1964.

It could have been converted a little later, maybe after GP90 became difficult to get.

They're fun, getting a bit expensive these days though

With a good barrel and bedding you could probably get down to 2 MOA, around 3-4 MOA is more standard
>Anything i should know before buying?
What you're asking. Enfield's are a blast but they aren't laser shooters, rimlock is easy to avoid but the mags can be finicky at times. Enfield's were heavily serialized so if the bolt, receiver, magazine (and stock is often serialized) aren't matching do not pay a premium. The one you posted there looks to be a good wartime example with the L type two position rear sight and grooved hand guard. The most common barrel types are 2 and 5 groove, I'd try to get 5 if you can but the 2 grooves are fine too. The 5 grooves shoot a bit better but they both shoot nearly identical under 300 yards.

Kinda have to know the asking price. And what you're hoping to accomplish with it. Milsurp is like buying an old car, you shouldn't go into it expecting it to be a cheaper alternative to modern options.
>Accuracy?
3-5 MOA is the average. Enfields have generous chambers so they can eat lower quality ammo, but accuracy potential suffers as a result. You may get one significantly better or worse than that though.
>Anything i should know before buying?
Not really, other than the typical caveats of buying surplus.

It was labeled as a "Type 99 short rifle" on their website but the price was very reasonable.

Huh really? Everything I saw when I was there seemed overpriced

It was only $225. I was torn between it and a Brazilian 1909 for $250. The type 99 was all matching and in better shape so I pounced on it

How good/bad are the sights on the old long Type 38's? I have a Type 99 and really like the sights, but my friend claims the old Type 38 had ass for sights.
>>
>>36796243
The early T38 infantry rifles had a wide, shallow "V" rear aperture, and a pyramidal "A" front sight post. Not great for consistent sight picture. They're on par with most other turn-of-the-last-century infantry rifles though.

The cheapest guns are going to be chambered in calibers that you're not going to find affordable. Any guns in common calibers are probably outside of your price range. Get an AR.

So after you get a C&R do you just take your bound book to gun shows and the like or what?
>>
>>36796864
yes, but you also have to bring your penis inspection booklet too

wait, did you not know about that? in exchange for no 4473s you're obligated to perform inspections on each seller

Yes, it is an oral exam as well as a visual one.
You must maintain eye contact with the examined.

When you get you C&R do not sign it at first.

Scan it to print out blank copys (or can photcopy the shit out of it. As the FFL says "The signature on each copy must be an original signature". When doing a face to face transaction you sign the copy before you hand it to the dealer for their records (insted of a 4473).

Back in the day if you got somthing thru the mail you had to mail a original signature copy to the dealer. Now you can just email/fax a signed copy.

Leave the bound book at home it plays into that you have like 24 hours to log a purchase in it.

These are the main points, there are some other little things but just read the faq on the ATF site or if all else contact them. I just got mine a month ago but haven't used it yet. Was going to with my refund but the state grabed a big chunk of the Federal.

mosin nagants or a yugo sks. ammo can be found for 20-30 cents a round and depending on variation you can find the rifles anywhere from $100-400. the cheap ammo is key. look for guns in 7.62x54r or 7.62x39 (the cheapest milsurp caliber unless you want to pay big bucks for a rare .22lr trainer). most other milsurp calibers are going to run 50 cents to over a dollar a round unless you make it yourself

seriously the fudds and noob millennials ruin it, everybody overbids market value for some reason, then you still have 17% premium. there are no deals to be had

What rifles have stupidly long bayonets? All I know off the top of my head is

Are there any other guns out there that I can stick a sword to the end of?
>>
>>36798613
at what price and condition? the estimates are always ridiculously inflated. if original military config and decent working condition i would be happy at $600 which will be about $750 after fees and shipping

also the auction hasnt technically started yet, lots of fudds go in person

>>
>>36787312

>>
>>36798887
When do you find out?
>>
>>36798919
End of the week when the auction actually happens. It's OK though, it's less a "I must have it!" and more of a "I should buy them since they're in stock. Just in case I decide I want one later."
>>
>>36798751
To my mind most rifles from the turn of the century (1900). It was the time of 16-19 inch bayonets.
>>
>>36798751

A lot of the black powder guns had long bayonets because they were single shot or muzzle loaders so you were expected to use them more often. I was going to post a pic of my Trapdoor bayonet next to my 1907, but we've hit the image limit.
>>
>>36798974
Same here on image limit. Was going to post the M1917 and M1903 with swords.

>>36798963
Just to add to my post and that in the muzzel loading days there would come a time were your rifle turned into a spear. Sword bayonets at the turn of the century were new weapons old tactics so long bayonet. It was the interwar period that the concept of a turbo long bayonet was recognized as silly.
