I like my 25-06. Recoil is mild, trajectory is flat enough you hold dead on and figure if you miss you were too far away anyway, and terminal effects are pic related. Shit, I'd shoot anything on the North American slope except buff or griz at or under a hundred yards with that gun.
>>
>>38819473
Slightly less recoil and slightly flatter trajectory. That counted for alot when it was introduced because a fixed 4x scope was cutting edge gear, so many hunters appreciated a cartridge that could increase their max point blank range.

30-30 lever action are perfect for deer as long as you aren't shooting super far.

.223.is great for deer as long as you use heavier grain rounds.

.243 is a great round with very little recoil.

7mm-08 is a neat round of you're a hipster that happens to hunt.

.308 is about as good as it gets for deer. Near, far, wherever they are.

30-06 is literally as good as it gets for deer/elk/black bear/moose etc etc so on and so forth.

There are tons of great rounds for deer but a lot of what rifle/round you choose depends on where you are hunting, ie distance and terrain.

There are plenty good calibers, I used to be a long action day but like the shorter actions more and more, the 7mm-08 has a flat trajectory, fast bullet, so it can even reach out a distance, but since most durr are taken within 150 yes, no need to pack around a 30-06,.270, or god forbid a magnum.

Not realising that poachers in Africa usr. 22 LR to kill elephants.
So really the caliber choice is mostly based on the legalities of his hunting area. Then the only question is if he thinks a 300+us shot is likely, if no: any legal caliber, if yes: the flatter shooting legal caliber within reason.

How is the 7mm Rem Mag for bambi in the Midwest?

I sometimes come across piles of this brass when I’m out brass jewing and the size and birth of the cases has always intrigued me. Though it is a belted magnum and I’ve heard bad things about their accuracy.
>>
>>38822466
7mm mag is nice if you need to shoot 1000 yd.
It will for sure kill a dear, its so fast though, if you hit a glancing shot on a bone you will get massive meat loss, I have had this happen.
My 7mm also cracked it's chamber, coulda been the gun, could been the ammo, but it is an issue with the magnums more than non magnums, you also blow your rifling out faster with magnums.
>>
>>38822466
>heard bad things about their accuracy
>literally the most accurate long range caliber until you get to the .338 lapua, a cartridge built ground up for precision long range shooting.

I mean by it’s a belted magnum which I heard were less inherently accurate than rounds that headspace on the shoulder.

Any decent hunting load 6mm cartridge will do the job swimmingly for mile/whitetail anywhere in North America.

6.5x55
6.5 grenedel
270
243 win
6.5 creedmore

I know tons of people that hunt with .223 and .308 and do fine too. Pretty much any rifle cartridge that could reliably put down a human at the same range can take a deer. Your glass and technique are the real difference makers

>>
>>38822466
It's overkill for anything not bear/moose, even at extended distances.

You have to get into the really heavy bullet weights (which aren't generally available in factory ammo) to get good ballistic coefficients, and while it excels as a reloader's round factory ammo is meh.

A properly chambered rifle (IE, not Remington or pre-S&W-buyout Thompson/Center) should have zero issues with accuracy despite headspacing on the shoulder being better on paper, and the belted magnums have been widely used in both actual sniping and long-range target shooting for 50+ years with no issue.

They are fun as fuck but also fudd as fuck, as in literally Elmer Fudd hunting rabbits. I like hunting with them, but I hunt with just about everything and don't mind looking like a redneck from central casting.
>>
>>38824400
This is the stupidest thing I've ever read

It has muzzle energy comparable to modern .30-06 with equivalent bullet weights, it doesn't even launch them much faster. It literally just has better ballistic coeffocients and sectional density
>>
>>38819404
They all work. Don't be stupid and buy a really small gun like a .223, or a really big gun like a .300 win mag. Get anything in between those.
>>
I recommend 7mm-08 personally. Best balance of cartridge strengths. .270 is in the same vein performance-wise but the snowflake bullet diameter makes it harder to experiment with.
>>
>>38819404
>>
>>38829719
.270 has plenty of bullets, jist the .270 win is more cartridge then you need for most hunting applications.
The 7mm-08 and .270 have almost exact trajectories out to 500-600 yds, then the .270 starts to out perform the 7mm 08, but for hunting if you're regularly shooting beyond 400yds you're a retard, or a tryhard.
>>
>>38827789
300 WM is stupid for other reasons, its jist a very expensive, heavy recouping 06 really, its pushing the same bullet only like 200 fps faster.
If you must habe a big gun, go .338 WM.
On a semi related not I am saddened that the .35 welen is rare in both ammo and rifles.
>>
>>38826294
Rattling doesn't work on real deer, only whitefails.
>>
>>38826381
They are ok if you only need improved cylinder, if you want a tighter pattern for ducks/geese/turkey you need something threaded for chokes, someone used to make a threaded single shot, but it was the same price as ok threaded pumps, so no real reason to get the single shot over the pump.

>>

>.270 has plenty of bullets

And they're all largely unsuitable for use in anything past ~650 yards in medium game, which, given the size of the cartridge, should be one of its main strengths but simply isn't because nobody actually shoots it beyond 400, so bullet manufacturers don't make anything that weighs more than 150gr with a decently high BC. Good luck finding anything that'll work well if it goes much below 2200 FPS.

There's just been a lot more commercial development in true 7mm bullets as opposed to .277 diameter bullets.

OP don't listen to this mongoloid, I used to lead axis deer hunts and both 6.5 creedmoor and grendel are excellent for taking deer. I've never personally used .223 but as long as you're using something like 77 grain hunting loads you should be completely fine.
>>
Right now I have a Remington 700 in 7mm Rem Mag. Way too overkill for Bambi and ammo is pretty expensive. Heavy bullets really don’t have time to expand and 139 grains blow a fist sized hole in the rib cage.

I’m going with a Tikka T3x in .308 after I sell the POS Remington.
