I don't know. I read his latest (Golden House) over the last few weeks, and it was dreadful. Midnight's Children was so good; his descent into bad writing is a shame.

How are the Satanic Verses? Was it any good or basically clickbait?

I liked it. The passages that got him a fatwa are a tiny portion of the book, I don't think it really deserves its reputation as a controversial thing. Most of it's just domestic drama with some folkoric stuff thrown in.

Is he actually any good? Or is he just another affirmative action magical realist like Toni morrison and Junot Diaz

His earlier works are legitimately good. His later works are essentially cash grabs that contain a nugget of good prose here and there but otherwise exist primarily to convert his once terrific reputation into an increased bank account balance.

Too much time spent with nu-atheists (i'm not even kidding, but i'm not in the mood to search for the passages from it i have in mind).
>>
if you saw his house in Curb your Enthusiasm you would see how he want from the former to the latter

I thought it was overwritten.

Age combined with fame.

Age takes the ability away, fame takes away the hunger for the ability, causing a vicious cycle downhill.

Fame also encourages all sorts of delusions and provides all sorts of distractions. There is a reason very few artists in the last 100 years, the century of mass media, have notable "late style" like Yeats or Eliot.

As well the fatwa branded him as dangerous in a way, and he never took risks in his work henceforth

Fatwa sex is a wonderful and terrible thing. It gives you physical pleasure, but it kills your ability to write decent prose.

So would you guys only recommend everything from before Satanic Versus, or are there any gems after it?

Midnight's Children is his best by far.
