Are some scenes really blurry just because of how they shot the special effects or did they lose some footage that they couldn't master anymore?

It's most likely the former. The worst of the blurriness seems to be mainly with scenes that use a lot of compositing.

Quality is "ok", but for a fucking expensive box like this, I must admit I was expecting something near the movies of Changeman or Flashman (probably the best quality I saw in a toku).

By the way, this release is hardsubbed or softsubbed?
>>
>>15329864
I don't think it was ever possible for Gavan to look quite on that level, especially given the way that it was shot. Personally, I'm just glad it's still an upgrade from what we had prior.

As far as prices go...it's pretty standard for Japanese BDs to cost a small fortune regardless of the actual quality of the product. Although, I can't help but think I've said this same thing to you before.

Anyway, it's softsubbed like MFC's previous Gavan releases.
>>
>>15329864
It might not be G Gundam levels of quality, but if you compare it to the already existing DVDs, it's leaps and bounds better to what we had.
>>
>>15329907
Yeah, I know I'm setting the bar too high. In this case, it's probably the best Toei can do. Unfortunately, I think next BDs releases will follow the same painful path the DVDs did: spend 10-15 years to release Juspion, Metalder, BFs... Ow god.
>>
Any normal shot more or less looks fantastic quality-wise, but any scene that has something like back projection instantly drops massively in quality. My only assumption is that the process affected the actual master copy for those frames, so not much can be done.
>>
>>15331821
rear projection, I meant
>>
>>15331821
It's a shame since those kind of shots appear to have been used pretty frequently for Don Horror.

Incidentally, I never actually noticed there was a moving background behind him until now.

Has anyone seen the Goranger blu rays?

So do we have a general list of Metal Heroes with decent subs now? I know there have been a few groups hard at work subbing shows in the past year or so and there are a lot more now then there used to be, but I'm not sure which ones have been done.
>>
>>15334934
LxC's site has one: https://lovexcare.wordpress.com/releases/metal-hero-guide/
Say what you will about their output, but they always make sure to update their guides.
>>
>>15334934
Gavan, Winspector, Solbrain and Juspion all have high quality full English subs. Sharivan, Exceedraft, and Janperson are all getting steadily worked on by the same respective sub groups who did the last four shows I mentioned. Somebody else is working on B-Fighter too at the moment. There's full subs for Metalder but they're the work of three or four different groups, variable in quality and unusually coherent HK crabsticks for a sizeable portion of the show. Shaider had some rare full English subs that I saw posted on youtube years ago but some of it was just guesswork and the video quality was abysmal. I think that's all of them. Just leaves Shaider, Spielban, Jiraiya, Jiban, Blue SWAT and B-Fighter Kabuto in need of translation, Metalder too if anyone feels like giving it a comprehensive complete resub.
>>
>>15335021
MBE are doing both Janperson and B-Fighter, for added clarification.
>>
>>15334347
From what I understand Goranger's BDs are negative scan HD remasters.

So at the very least we don't have to worry about Toei jewing people out of their money for upscales.

Hmmm... Depends how you look at them... If you take a look at Juspion/Spielban or fully closed suits like Jiban/Winspector/Solbrain, they look like not "bad", but definitely a "downgrade". However, if you compare with the spandex from early 80's Sentais or even KR, they are still pretty acceptable nowadays (Shaider > Sharivan > Gavan G > Gavan).

In my opinion, if you look just the suit design, Juspion and Spielban could be cop buddies (artistically speaking).

The reason why I'm not a huge fan of the Sanagiman suit has nothing to do with how it has aged.

Less "timeless" and more "product of their time." The Space Sheriffs, Speilban, and Juspion in particular all have a very "retro sci fi robot" look to them that's right at home in 80s Japanese media, which was kind of 20 years behind the West. Their style works for what they are and what kind of show they had.

You don't really need to "modernize" them like Inazuman or Kikakder or Rider 1 because you kind of can't. Changing them would change their very character.

Looks nice
>>
>>15339241
>You don't really need to "modernize" them like Inazuman or Kikakder or Rider 1 because you kind of can't.
I guess its because those three are designed by a mangaka with manga in mind and then the idea was adapted to TV while the sherriffs are 100% made for TV(dunno if they had a manga).
>>
>>15339241
To be honest, I think most Metal Heroes designs appeal better to current sensibilities because it was at that point in the 80s where Toei would start using materials that are aesthetically similar to what they use currently.

It works, too. Gavan Type-G only changes the eye color and chest lights, but that little change makes it look much more modern. Gavan Bootleg and/or Estevan (since the latter is the former repainted), despite being much newer, manage to both look modern and right at home with the original Sheriffs.

I know that was probably the intention, but the fact that they stuck to classic design sensibilities to create them and manage to still make them work in both directions is a testament to the style.

>>
>>15340688
>... anything that's not a Space Sheriff is treated like a red-headed stepchild by Toei ... Jiraiya's lead actor wanted to show up in Ninninger
THIS.

I always say: Toei is L-A-Z-Y as fuck, has almost 15 old IPs and don't use them. I'm pretty sure If wasn't Saban'$ world licen$e$ + toy$ royaltie$ paid by Murica, their toku studio would be dead since 2006-2007. Japan alone can't sustain the genre anymore.

They need to create an anime series, like Hikaruon's movie. Best of both worlds.
>>
>>15340713
Have you ever thought that maybe the expense of producing a series is probably the reason they haven't actually done it yet?
>>
>>15340688
Even Space Sheriff has basically only survived through crossover appearances. They attempted to push it standalone and it failed.

If they couldn't get stuff like the upcoming Space Squad movie with Dekaranger you just wouldn't see new content for it.

>>15340713
>I always say: Toei is L-A-Z-Y as fuck
More like they have limited staff and after a certain point they're basically competing with themselves.

According to the Japanese wikipedia page, It's the reason after G-Fighter Kabuto, Kabutack was a comedy series, since standard Metal Hero was considered too close to Sentai.

Also, in spite of you people talking about Metal Heroes supposedly aging better, Rider had much more active merchandising and magazine presence during the 90s than Metal Heroes had after they stopped. The brand and designs just don't seem to have that much selling power in spite of Toei's recent push.
>>
>>15340924
>According to the Japanese wikipedia page, It's the reason after G-Fighter Kabuto, Kabutack was a comedy series, since standard Metal Hero was considered too close to Sentai.

According to the articles, previously Metal Heroes aimed for an older audience, but due to underperforming merchandising for several years, they changed to the same 3-5 core group as Super Sentai with the first B-Fighter. It doesn't mention how well B-Fighter did, although it seems to have been considered successful in general, but says B-Fighter Kabuto performed worse than it (with a source linked) and that the original plan for the next show was actually "Sea Fighter" before changing to Kabutack when they decided to drop the action focus to take it in a different direction from Sentai.

Maybe. We all know the risk of a new show is always high, but I feel they don't have interest to diversify things (make an toku-anime like Hikaruon, make adult-toku like Garo, reinvent MHs, license more IPs like Marvel/DC does with collectible companies, things like that). They just want to sustain sentai+KR, receive some cash from Saban and... nothing more.

>>15340924
>...MH was considered too close to Sentai.
Toei probably did a wrong move: transformed solo hero shows (82-89) into "heroes groups" shows (90-98). I'm not a big fan of Riders, but I must admit when Ishinomori passed away, they have learned how to reinvent the KR franchise since Agito.

Agreed. :(
>>
>>15340688

Even then it's just Gavan. Sharivan and Shaider lucked out with those Next Generation movies, but the only real Metal Hero anything we see nowadays is Gavan Type-G making cameos.

If I'm remembering right, we haven't seen the likes of any of the Rescue Police folks, Blue SWAT, Jiban, or Janperson outside of that one bit in SHTZ where the Gokaigers turned into a handful of random Metal Heroes. We haven't seen Juspion, Spielban, or Metalder at all.

Whichever one is most appealing to you visually and thematically will probably be fine. Metal Hero isn't like Kamen Rider or Sentai where themes and tones can vary a lot.

Metal Heroes are generally pretty stuck in a basic foundation up until Kabutack, where they changed things up because not enough kids were watching (read: buying toys) despite decent popularity with teens/young adults. We all know how that went.

>>15329864
Yeah. Those shitty-looking composites are like that on the film due to how they were made. When Toei couldn't do a composite easily optically, they'd transfer the components to composite analog video (almost always badly blended) and do the composite electronically. Then they'd transfer the result to film and splice it into the finished episode like any other shot.

>>15328095
Sadly, that probably isn't possible. Those movies were almost certainly made on larger film stock than the episodes.

>>15327875
I wish all of Toei's Blurays could be like that half of an episode of Masked Rider Black where someone forgot to turn on the DNR.
>>

I don't feel like B-Fighter has any ore story structure at all. The only ongoing stuff is drama with Black Beet dying and the space fairy macguffin, and even that only crops up after the 30s. Which is about the point most of the shows introduce their endgame setup.

First time I saw you here. Thanks for the raws: amazing job.

By the way, if you wish, someday try to rip Toho's Cybercop (1988). It's a great show and some BRs ripped it (with dual audio) into a boring .ISO format (you can see it here: http://pastebin.com/L9NRetiY).

Best regards.

It's too bad Toei isn't as caring as Tsuburaya is in the remastering department.

>>15350397
Okay, so it's a clear sign that they didn't know what to do with MH anymore. At least the crossover at the end makes for a neat payoff.

Huh. I guess that post didn't make it clear, I meant core target audience age group, not the team format itself. According to that wikipedia article before B-Fighter Metal Hero aimed for an older audience than Sentai.

THIS.

First of all, the MHs suits were not made by Toei, but by Rainbow C.O, a specialized company for JAC/JAE. Toei did only the spandex suits.

Second, we must compare with other shows from late 70's and 80's. Sentai spandex? Terrible until 84. KR? Only Black/RX/Shadow Moon designs save the name. Toho's productions? Cybercop armors were ubber shit tier budget.

On the other hand, Space heroes suits (Gavan to Spielban) where superior than ANY other show. 60's look? Old style? Come on... Even cheaper Byclosser suits are better than 99% of 70's suits.

And if we go further and add closed suits inside this discussion (Jiban, Police Rescue...) even western productions like Robocop got beaten in character design. Just take a look at lights, shape, mobility, details... and compare.
>>
>>15353390
Pretty much nothing. The Space Sheriffs are very much a product of a post-Star Wars Japan.

>>15353625
I feel like if 70s Tsuburaya were even included in this rant, it'd blow the fuck out of everything else.
>>
>>15353625
Juspion is so damn shiny. Fucking love it.
>>
>>15353625
>>15353728
This does reminds me...those are ALL shots of close-up suits. Not that the action suits look terrible mind you, but they're noticeably of a lower quality.

I wonder just how often they did this before Gavan. Like, I think Kikaider had two different suits and even had one mask with light up eyes...but I can't think of anything else.
>>
>>15353753

The original Kamen Rider obviously had multiple versions of the helmets in the original series. They oddly seem to drop that in later ones though (like eyeholes being incorporated into the basic design for Stronger and Super-1, rather than only being used for action suits), and the rest of the suit didn't change.

Gavan sticks out to me because it was more obvious when they changed suits for him. You have the shiny chrome close-up suit and the more matte action suit. He's the only one I can think of where the difference is that obvious.

Of course nowadays when Gavan shows up, he's always chrome, but I'd chalk that up to modern techniques.
>>
>>15353793
I'd argue that the Sharivan suit is a little worse, since they decided to cover the action suit in glitter.

>>
>>15353753
Rider 1 and Shadow Moon sticks out. Rider 1 has an Easy Rider like concept while Shadow Moon is basically Knight in shining armor put into KR. I would conceed that Space Sheriff do have better looks and features than Robocop. Its the eyes and variation of the thematic looks of Space Sheriff that make the suit work.

Maybe Ishinomori tried to create something "different". The fencing foil/attack was ok, the "pistol-morpher" ok, Machine Dolphin was neat, but the cape has no sense.

To be honest, the most interesting thing about Machineman to me personally is that the music was composed by Yuji Ohno of Lupin III fame.

To my knowledge, that was the first and only time he composed for a henshin hero show.

Spielvan was announced as Juspion 2 in Brazil.
>>
Is Juspion the only one who actually had a giant robot?
>>
>>15355818
Gavan technically had that dragon, although it wasn't humanoid.

Spielvan had a giant robot, but it was only used to destroy fighters and tanks, rather than giant monsters.
>>
>>15355818
Jiraiya also had a giant robot, but that wasn't until midway through IIRC.

>Is Juspion the only one who actually had a giant robot?
Gavan had the dragon, but it's not technically a robot fight - in practical terms. Just flash shots, not a real "combat".

Spielban has a giant robot, but it's a toy animated sequence, not suit actor. Just a feel shots (and the quality is terrible).

Jiraiya received Jiraishin, a magic mech, in the last third of the show and killed 2 giant monsters using him. Not much screen time, but it has 3-4-5 episodes about him.

B.F.Kabuto has a giant robot, Kabuterios, in the end of the show. Unfortunately, the quality is not good again.

In the very end, Juspion is the still the only MH with real giant robot who got big screentime.

Yeah. Sharivan has to be the worst, and made it east to tell that there were three suits even on the shitty DVDs: the chrome one for stock stuff, the hard shiny one, and the flexible glittery one. (And the latter two would be mixed together depending on the shot)

Am I the only one who unironically likes Machine Man and would love to see more subbed? I love the premise of "an alien student writing his thesis on planet Earth", I love his Lois & Clark dynamic with the reporter gal, I love that his robot pals a baseball, I love that the villain is wholly unrelated to everything else and just wants to make life MISERABLE for kids cuz fuck 'em.

I legit hope to see this subbed in the future.

Me either. Besides the extreme simplicity of the show (Byclosser level), it's a typical 80's show for really small kids, with real comic-dumb scenes (catharsis wave!). And the music is also nice:

>>

I dunno how expensive it was, but the suit did end up heavy enough to nearly kill Jiro Okamoto.

>>15376506
In those days, Toei apparently used a new camera lens, so things got a bit ghosty when they tried putting shows like this one on DVD.
