I'm actually surprised it it has any polish going on. And really uneven polish at that, like a real Trek show. Back handed compliment out of the way: what >>15536632 said. Dutch angle and lens flare at once would make sense in the occasional scene to make the audience feel wrong with the situation. Everything is really F'in shiny. This is going around /tv/. Improbable, but it's not as if things haven't leaked on 4chan before

The really dark skinned Klingon is Molor. The Klingons are from the 9th century. Kahless exiled them. They went into cryo sleep. The present day Klingons look like a mix of the TOG klingons and the TNG.

A Klingon Mercenary is introduced as a pivotal character 1/2 through the series. He is a Klingon like Worf adopted by human parents, he wants nothing to do with Klingon culture and acts quite human and likes being culturally human. However it is revealed he is the descendant of Kahless and is considered to be his reincarnation by the religious Klingons. Molor wants this Klingon dead. His adopted name is ''Senan'' which is Gaelic. He joins the crew of the Discovery. His appearance has been kept secret as to avoid heavy spoilers. The writers plan for him to become an ''Aragorn'' sort of leader eventually, a reluctant cliche King, but apparently he's written very well despite the trope. He is played by Allen Leech.

At least that'd explain why they look so weird, and why any of them have ridges to begin with, or at least why that many do, since the whole augment virus thing in Enterprise has happened at this point.

As for the trailer it's self, It actually looked better than I imagined, I don't have high hopes for it yet, but I won't write it off just yet.
>>
>>15536632
>lens flare everywhere
Mostly in the CBS/American version. The Netflix trailers have noticably less. Seems like it's just CBS' marketing department completely missing the mark yet again.

>>15536663
The mercenary bit sounds like bollocks, but given the sarcophagus ship leak months ago, the primitive appearance of the Klingon armour and such in the trailer, and what looks to be a black hole on the Shengzhou's view screen, the whole "ancient Klinks back for revenge" thing could work due to time dilation shenanigans or something.

And finally, it is so familiar that one can hardly remember feeling any other way.
>>
>>15536786
Because Les Moonves is Old Media and it fucking shows. He's not trying to get fans; no one at CBS ever has been. They're trying to get the Masses to watch it, get the highest ratings possible.

The problem is that's a fucking dead end and they don't seem to realize that. They don't seem to understand that content ingestion is so decentralized these days that your best bet IS to cater to the fans, who will then proselytize it to the Masses.

>>
>>15536786

Because The Fans are a small and aging minority who don't represent the kind of people the big advertisers want to appeal to.

They want the young, hip, fresh generation and They want as many of them as possible so as many of them as possible will see as many ads as possible and buy as many products as possible. They want The Brand to be a popular and widespread thing to talk about and think about so The Audience will buy The Brand's merchandise and the merchandise that is advertised alongside The Brand.

First they came for the Star Wars EU but I said nothing because I was not a Star Wars fan...
>>
>>15536868
I'd agree. 50 years of fans that were the mainline of nerdom. Every series launch got hate. Now the mix are people that go back to watch the old ones when one series stuck out to them. Hundreds of hours of screentime and every fan has their little rankings of shows and movies. Not the most unpleasant fanbase, but definitely not a whole.
>>
I will be honestly surprised if this even gets to season two. This looks nothing like Star Trek. For a series that has, for the most part, been about progression, why do they keep moving the series into the past? I'd much rather see what happens after TNG and DS9.

Even having Michelle Yeoh isn't enough to do this for me.
>>
>>15536886
Agreed. I'm rather pissed off about most upcoming Trek, but I can't really think of anything that Paramount/CBS/etc. could do that would make me happy. I mean, I can say "No lensflare" or "buy a tripod", but that's really just snark against minutia. I can't really imagine any way for them to communicate to me in a trailer "We're going to make an series that does cool science fiction stories and that's really what we're going to focus on" and have me believe it. So I try not to say anything.

That said, I started watching some of the recent fan productions, and I find myself willing to go along with quite a lot of TOS worship and silly plots, so I'm not completely cynical. I guess I just have higher expectations for big budget productions.
>>
>>15536663
It could be interesting, but I kind of hope that last paragraph is fake. Otherwise it feels like they're adding a Klingon to the cast simply to get extra brownie points with fans and casuals. Which is most likely true, but come on.

>For a series that has, for the most part, been about progression, why do they keep moving the series into the past? I'd much rather see what happens after TNG and DS9.

Because that requires actual scifi writers, to come up with something new and expand the boundaries of the franchise. New races, new enemies, new technology and science problems, etc.

But even the more chickenshit, creatively bankrupt tv writer can do Star Trek prequels. The franchise and universe already has so much material that they can get years worth of shows out of simple shit like "Klingons, but FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS TIME." Or "Romulan cloaking ship enemy, BUT THE FEDERATION HAS NEVER HEARD OF CLOAKING TECH BEFORE AND DON'T KNOW WHATS HAPPENING."

Basically just regurgitate to you everything that the writers can learn about the franchise themselves from browsing the Star Trek wiki, call it an 'homage', and cover it in a thin veneer of """Mystery""" for the purposes of the plot because the viewer knew what this was before the opening credits finished, and the characters will need two episodes to catch up.

It was like a flood of Trek. People just got sick of it and never recovered.
>>
I'm not really feeling it.

Another prequel where the tech looks more advanced the even TNG.

For being set in the Prime universe it looks alot like Abramsverse Trek.

"We've been working together for 7 years"
I'm pretty sure the whole character interaction will be like they first met.

The Klingons look like dog turds wrapped in wardrobe borrowed from what 40K Dark Eldar consider to be a Hot Topic.

On the good side though:

It's interesting that it looks like the main character is half or quarter Vulcan and is trying to strike a balance between the words rather than pure Vulcan.

I like the ship design. I've always been a fan of the under hull nacelle design (Miranda Class, Akira Class, Luna Class)

Now for the one thing that is digging at me.

According to a bunch of conspiracy theorists this series is going to have the premise of the Battle of Axanar which was the story that the fan made Trek movie Star Trek: Axanar that CBS sued to stop.

It will not sit well with me from a creative stand point to do the very story that you sued a fan project to stop. It's almost like they pulled a Steve Jobs where someone told them a great idea, Jobs shoots it down then steals that idea and claims credit.
>>
>>15537467
Does CBS actually say this is in the Prime universe anymore? Everything from the viewscreen being an HUD over a window to the Klingons being bald suggests that this is the Abramsverse. This is what's happening in space when Jim Kirk is a kid in Iowa being chased by robot cops while he plays Beastie Boys on his Nokia.

>REEEEEE TOO ADVANCED COMPARED TO TOS

I didn't understand this complaint when it came to Enterprise, and I don't get it now. Do you people really want to take pic related, which already looks ancient in 2017, downgrade it even further, and still have it be "the future"? Star Trek fans are an aged and dying breed, as much as any of us would appreciate a show with this aesthetic, it ain't happening, normies would laugh at it, and very few people would watch it.

When Roddenberry made TMP, he decided to change what the Klingons looked like, because he had a bigger budget to do things he couldn't do in the series. The whole species had its look completely changed, with no explanation. Fans were just supposed to think that that was how Klingons always looked, they were just unable to do it in TOS. Then Enterprise came and gave an in-universe explanation that was great but entirely unnecessary because nobody had a problem with it just being a retcon.

So why does everyone get so bootyblasted about tech updates? We have holograms and shit in 2017, are we really gonna keep them out of the 22nd century just because TOS writers didn't think of it?

wew, even /m/ is flinging shit about the main character being a black woman.

I get the fears that the show is gonna make a big deal out having a black female main, or a gay crewmember. Qualities that shouldn't be a big deal in the universe of Star Trek.

But guys, there was literally no indication of that in the trailer. None. You guys might be raging for nothing. Wait till the show actually premiers.

Sisko was pretty based. him being black rarely came up as a character or plot point. There is like one cringe moment. when he doesn't want to do the holodeck casino heist, because black people weren't treated well in the time period it simulates.

black female half vulcan wouldn't be bad. if it wasn't for her character arc being about how she is too human to fit in vulcan society, being the main character, and being a sassy black woman stereotype.

Tuvok was the first black vulcan. yet his blackness was a non issue.

Star Trek bridges always look like they have a lot of wasted space in them. I know the real world reason is to make it easier to film and simpler for audiences to process, but compared to actual ship bridges, they're gigantic, empty rooms.

One thing I think is interesting is that the Romulan control room/bridge/whatever in Balance of Terror seems significantly smaller than the Enterprise's. Same reason (sans the augment thing added later) about the Klingon's granted even in DS9 it was sort of touched on in the time travel tribble episode, but up until that point it was just skirted over as far as I know.

In the case of the Romulan's they've been separated for Centuries if not longer, so could just be an adaption to something or mutation if there's ever an in universe explanation.

>Well, if the holodeck is programmed to register that he's black and treat him according to period, he really wouldn't enjoy that simulation. Gotta have colorblind holodecks to keep up the charade.
But why would you program that in?

Julian and O'brien aren't mocked every time they go into a historical war simulation for being out of shape. The Nazi Hirogen simulation didn't force Neelix into his oven just because Talaxians were space Jews/Gypsies. Barclay's caricatures of Picard, Riker, and LaForge didn't realize they were mocking themselves.

Holodecks are always colorblind unless you specifically play an SJW program, like the Doctor's holonovel.

I'm actually pretty disgusted at the racism ITT. All of your arguments are weak justifications for being mad that this series features a black female as the main character. You even have people saying she's a stereotypical sassy black woman even though there's nothing in the trailer that shows that.
>>
>>15539671
You think this thread is bad, absolutely do not look in any /tv/ thread about Discovery. They're full /pol/ over there.
>>
>>15539266

Because as far as we know, this series still takes place in the Prime universe ten years before Kirk takes command of the Enterprise.

Which means Enterprise would be active under the command of Christopher Pike during the events of Discovery.

Which also would make the Discovery itself (presumably still NCC-1031) laughably obsolete.
>>
>>15539685
I've already seen their threads. /tv/ has always been /pol/-lite, so I wasn't as surprised. But I expected better of /m/.

Vulcans are primarily light skinned for one.
Two, the science for making halfbloods wasn't perfected until Spock was born, him being the first child to survive to adulthood.

Her 'parent' figure in the trailer is Sarek, Spock's father.

And Vulcans aren't xenophobic, what?

Are those the Klingons where they tried Augmenting themselves and ended up like TOS Klingons?
>>
>>15539881
The rumors have been that they're to Klingons what Romulans are to Vulcans, ancient Klingons that got kicked out of the Empire, and now they're back.

They're also supposedly based on one of the unused concept art designs for the Motion Picture Klingons.

>Implying it's /pol/ invading boards

People are just becoming woke to what a hellhole the world is becoming thanks to liberal policies and politics. They're now expressing that concern wherever they can, and as more and more bans are issued by sites like Reddit and Twitter for discussing these concerns, they naturally become more vocal on places where anonymity and free speech are provided, like 4chan. It's not that /pol/ suddenly moved everywhere; it's that posters on all sorts of boards are now much more willing, and much more desiring, to talk about and argue against the way liberal policies infect everything. It's the same reason Donald Trump was elected, why Geert Wilders is now leading the 2nd-largest political party in the Netherlands, why UKIP was the third-largest party in 2015, and why Marine Le Pen leads the 2nd-largest party in France.
>>
>>15540029
You're the infection. Nobody on 4chan really ever got sand in their vagina about "/pol/" posts before 2014. You're new here.

You do realize Starfleet was using pic relateds from 2280 up until the 2370s if not beyond right?

Now okay of course probably few-if any-served that whole 90 years, and that's fair enough but there's still refits and such, look how heavily refitted the original enterprise was between TOS and TMP, there's no telling whether something that drastic has already been done to the discovery already. Star Fleet isn't afraid to drag shit out with their designs, be it though refits or just using the general hull design filling it with new tech where needed, and building new ones as the refitted ones give out.

Either way my money is on, assuming they didn't go full retard, that it's a refitted older vessel, in the same way the Enterprise was in TMP.

The Miranda is an even better example, with a base design, two refits and a variant (the Soyuz). Starfleet builds their ships to last.

it's because television is for women, anon and women buy into that horseshit.
>>
Just in case some people don't know this, this is going to be on CBS All-Access, which means that the first episode will be on TV and the rest behind a paywall on CBS' website.
>>
>>15540503
Yeah they 'lasted' under centuries of peace. Then the Borg came and the Miranda/Excelsior's and failed to meet the challenge.

Then the Dominion came and the Miranda's along with the rest of starfleets older ships again performed badly. They were obsolete ships kept going well past the point of useful against any real threat.

Much like in RL upgrades can only do so much eventually you have to replace old stuff with new designs. Starfleet held onto ships like the Miranda/Excelsior for way too long they were good when they were new but by TNG were in dire need of replacement.

>>15539731
>>
>>15540535
The B-52 is useless aside from 'bomb brown people' and 'shoot cruise missiles' from over a thousand miles away roles. It's also a maintenance hog due to the age of the aircraft and all the wear and stress the aircrafts superstucture.

Also the B-52 is currently getting brand new wings built from scratch at huge cost because without them they won't be able to fly and the next 'replacement' for it is still a decade+ away.
>>
>>15540545
>The B-52 is useless aside from the stuff it does
WOW
>>
>>15540525
Yeah but the Dominion was also making short work of Galaxy classes which weren't that old really at the time.

The Dominion just had a tech advantage as a whole on top of being more warlike it's why the Defiant (the only purely focused on combat ship the federation had at the time) was brought out. (Though they were also running though other fleet's warships too) Now I agree with you yeah the Miranda and Excelsior are far out of date in the late 24th century.

But what I'm saying is, there is a precedent for them using old ships. The discovery being one isn't that farfetched, and we don't know if it's quite as ancient as the excelsiors were in TNG/DS9.

Honestly I think it'd be cool if the main ship isn't state of the art, and the whole federation is never ready for a fight thing is a plot point.

I doubt that'll happen though and it'll just be handwaved.
>>
>>15540522

liberalism is dead in the West.

left wing/welfare state/socialist/"progressive" nations want to pretend they are liberal. though they want to take the majority of the wealth you generate and criminalize thoughts and actions outside their idea of an ideal society.

right wing nations squash rights in the name of protecting traditional society.

It literally is affirmative action though.
They came out with articles praising how the black woman was Gene Roddenberries vision finally come to life.

BUT then you need to fucking remember, Ginan was literally affirmative action too. Whoopi Goldberg went up to Roddenberry and was like "Hey your last black character in TOS was fucking inspiring as goddamn shit to me, and you already have my friend playing Geordi, why not two niggas?!" (Paraphrasing from Chaos on the Bridge) and that's how we got a black Ginan.

I don't know what to say about it. It's always behind the scenes and the media that makes a big deal about it. If you don't care about gender and race then it's not going to bother you if you don't know, and you won't even notice it. It's retarded though, but only if you know about it. Nobody should pat themselves on the back and award themselves for not lynching niggers because we're automatically supposed to see black people as human beings and normal. I hate when people make a big deal out of it and think they're so progressive. Sisko happened fucking eons ago. Like what, 20 yearsm 30 years? Most normal people don't care about race now. only idiots do. One way or the other.

Look at F-14s. Still in service after 50 years.

It all depends on what the purpose of the ship is and how upgradeable it is. The Enterprise was NCC-1701; but we saw NCC numbers from the around 800 in TOS.

tv/movies do it for easy of fabrication, ease of putting the costume on and taking it off, and showing the actors face well.

Mapps of the Star Trek galaxy are always such a joke. All the dialogue in the show clearly indicates that every major power is in the Alpha Quadrant, but no stick half of them in the Beta Quadrant on the map and put Earth on the very deviding line between them. And there's just no regard for scale. If the show is to beleived You could get from one end of that map to the other in a week at warp 9, but Voyager will take 70 years to get back from the Deltra Quadrant.

It really ought to be completley redesigned to fit the actual show's diagloue. Ie: all those powers need to be in a fairly small corner of the Alpha Quadrant leaving Beta mostly unexplored.

Who gives a shit about the story "before" the OS? Wouldn't the much more interesting and much less confusing take be to focus on a different ship out in space? I mean, it's not like the original crew were superheroes. Nothing they did was really special, they were just doing a job that could have been carried out by hundreds of different other crews. Just set some other ship in the same time and have them fuck about in space visiting new planets and civilizations. Klingons are the lightsabers of Star Trek, something that only exists because of brand recognition in the public eye. It doesn't matter what the actual history of the race is, cram it into every subsequent byproduct to bleed out from the Star Trek franchise

You kind of answered your own question. It's all for the sake of brand recognition. "Untold stories" are hot right now. Executives are clearly more comfortable with adding extra details to a timeframe people are fond of/more familiar with than risk putting effort into something new and original that might bomb.

Ironically, they don't seem to grasp that both have an equal chance of bombing, and that the only thing that can save the show it's actual quality, but that's modern entertainment for you.
