Answer the following questions and state the reasons why:
>5 best movies
>Best director
>Best director of special effects
>Best composer
>Best special effects
>Best monsters
>Are you more excited about Planet of Monsters or Godzilla II?
>Where would you want to see the series go next?
>>
I'm much more excited about Godzilla 2. I'm a fan of the director, and I'm sure the redesigns for Ghidorah, Rodan, and Mothra will look pretty cool.

Also I really, really dislike the choppy 3D animation for Planet of Monsters.
>>
>5 best movies
They are undeniably Godzilla, Mothra vs Godzilla, Monster Zero, GMK, and Shin Godzilla
>best director
Ishiro Honda
>Best SFX director
Eiji Tsuburaya
>Best composer
Akira Ifukube
>Best special effects
Mothra vs Godzilla
>Best monsters
Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, Ghidorah, Biollante, and Mechagodzilla
>more excited for POM or KOTM
KOTM because Godzilla doesn't look like ass
>where would you want the series to go
In a more creatively, thematically focused direction. The Heisei and Millennium series suck, Shin Godzilla is a huge leap in quality.
>>
>>15927057
>Godzilla doesn't look like ass
Does he really look that bad? I for one kind of like this elderly and muscular interpretation.
>>

>5 best movies
Gojira, (the most emotionally impactful film), Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (the most fun), Godzilla vs. Mothra (the most classic next to the original), GMK (the most visually striking and among the most emotional), Godzilla vs. Hedorah (the most unique and experimental film)

>Best director
Honda

>Best director of special effects
Tsuburaya

>Best composer
Akira Ikufube

>Best special effects
That's a tough one, because you have to look at the time periods. For me, I find Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II to have some of the most appealing effects in the franchise, but Gojira, Godzilla vs. Mothra, and Ghidrah all had incredible works of imagery. GMK probably did one of the best as far as expressing visually the impact of having such large creatures exist.

>Best monsters
Godzilla, King Ghidorah, Anguirus, Rodan, Mothra, Gigan, Spacegodzilla

>Are you more excited about Planet of Monsters or Godzilla II?
Godzilla II, because Gareth Edwards was replaced by the director of Krampus, someone who seems to have a much better grasp of making a satisfying monster movie that is both fun and suspenseful. Planet of Monsters lost me at the CGI anime look.

>Where would you want to see the series go next?
I would like them to step away from using classic monsters, and start establishing new ones. The MUTOs were the only thing good about 2014zilla, because we at least got to see a new unique set of creatures that felt like characters. I'd prefer that they'd stop rehashing older monsters for a while and focus on new ones.
>>
>>15926981
Versus Biollante, Invason of Th Astro Monster, Versues Destoroyah, Ghidorah The 3 Headed Monster, and Godzilla 98. Don't care for the next four, staff in movies means nothing. Obsidius. No and yes. Don't care.
>>
>>15929252
>Staff in movies means nothing

Must be 18 champ.
>>
>>15929259
Turned 27 last week, been here 5 and a half years, staff in movies mean nothing only the result.
>>
>>15929267
>staff in movies mean nothing only the result.
What are you even trying to say.
>>
>>15929374
Works matter, not the people behind them, when it comes to entertainment
>>
>this thread exists because someone was too autistic in the other thread
>>
Does anyone prefer Teruyoshi Nakano to Tsuburaya? Despite getting the short end of the stick when it comes to budget, he managed to pull off some impressive effects.
>>
>>15929457
But each movie is the result of its staff's efforts you fucking autist.
>>
>>15929521
The issue is the stock footage in a number of his works, but he definitely did some great stuff. Mechagodzilla cutting loose with all his moves always looks great.

Who decided what stock footage to use and how much of it to use? It was used subtly in Monster Zero and Terror of MechaGodzilla. But Toho was quite shameless about its usage in AMA, Vs Gigan, and Vs Megalon. Was it the executives, was it the director, or was it the director of SFX? Honda mentioned once how audiences noticed whenever effects were recycled and that they felt cheated by it.
>>

Heisei era a best, but I feel like Gorosaurus, Anguirus, Baragon, <insert other dinosaur-origin monsters> could've at least had cameos, since RADON and Godzillasaurus made for a very "prehistory in the modern era" vibe

Godzilla 2. '14 Goji's design was already kinda a stretch from regular Goji, but PoM's design is a stretch from a stretch. Plus, why is he a fucking plant
>>Where would you want to see the series go next?
I'd like to see some sociopolitical strife in the movie world over the arrival of all the kaiju. Religious cults springing up everywhere, republicans wanting to suck spending out of everything else in order to afford (ineffective) anti-kaiju weapons, democrats wanting to have sanctioned kaiju nature preserves, etc. Seeing those issues play a real role in how the humans address the kaiju in the movies would be really neat and trigger the FUCK out of everyone on social media

What are the best shot and scored Godzilla movies? I want to discuss cinematic excellence.
>>
>>15940174
tee hee
>>
>>15940508
One of the best-shot films is the first one. The low angles Tstburaya and Ishiro Honda used to depict Godzilla are perfect. He really feels giant. The music itself is also iconic.
>>
>>15941313
Anything besides G54? It's almost in a class of its own in most cases. Does anything else come close?
>>
>>15943090
From a technical and film-making pont of view, I'd say GMK, Godzilla 1984 (this one is divisive tho I think it is a good film), Destroy All Monsters, and Shin Godzilla. Those are well made films.

The real cinematic excellence though comes from the effects as well as character in the monsters themselves. If you don't focus on the monsters and recognize their spot in the movie, then you might be bored.

Forgetting the peak of the Showa Era post-Godzilla '54 aren't we? Mothra vs Godzilla.

I normally gravitate towards the movies I find offer the most compelling human stories and technical quality. Why would you consider DAM among the best? It's human narrative falls flat (imo), final battle is a letdown, and almost everything it attempts was done better in Monster Zero. Actually Honda's last three Godzilla efforts (DAM, Revenge, ToM) were all disappointing to me. He declined Toho's request to helm Return of Godzilla.
>>
>>15939782
It came out last Tuesday and I've just finished reading the whole thing. There's tons of info on Honda's feelings regarding genre films and him being stuck with them, but he always tried his hardest. It mentions current events that shaped his films and his cast/crew members feelings on him. The writers aren't blind fans, and critique the films fairly, unfortunately while never going really deep into it. The info on his non-fantasy/sci-fi films from the 50's is also worth praising and it will leave you wanting to view them. Since it covers his whole life, plenty of things are revealed such as the war's impact on his views and him essentially co-directing Kurosawa's last 5 films. There's a bunch I haven't mentioned, but I recommend it if you're remotely interested in the Godzilla or Japanese cinema history as it's a great read. You might want to wait a bit for the price to drop, as for $30- it's a bit of a short read for 300~ pages of info, for me at least. There's some great pictures in it too.

How does it compare to the Tsuburaya book by August Ragone? Same? Better? I want more depth and images like concept art and bts stuff.

Unfortunately, I haven't gotten Master of Monsters yet, so I can't compare the two. There's plenty of pictures with Honda directing his cast, but off the top of my head the closest thing to concept art is two storyboards. The Ishiro Honda site by the authors of the Honda book has tons of (small) pictures though.

Interesting choice in movies. Especially vs SpaceGodzilla. Care to share the reasons for your selections?

Shin Godzilla briefly dealt with the repercussions of a monster suddenly appearing in the modern world. We saw a group of protesters who wanted to protect the monster, other nations keeping a close watch on the situation, the United States got actively involved, and heard the stock market plummeted after the destruction of Tokyo.

I expected Legendary's Godzilla to deal more with these matters, though its scope was extremely limited.
>>
>>15943392
>co-directing Kurosawa's last 5 films.
That's really interesting
>>
>>15946576
>I expected Legendary's Godzilla to deal more with these matters

These sorts of things are a bit dry to expect western moviegoers to be into, even in disaster films the spectacle of the disaster gets center stage and the aftereffects are glossed over.

...well, maybe Unstoppable, but that film is a hyped up look at stopping a runaway train, focusing on more down to earth woes.
>>
>>5943392
So Honda found it difficult to handle the monster summit sequence of Ghidrah, was pissed off about the dance sequence of Monster Zero, and said he wouldn't have been able to stomach directing Son of Godzilla, though he directs and is allegedly fond of All Monsters Attack? Yeah AMA has a touching human element, yet at times its far too juvenile and humanizes the monsters more than any of the other movies I mentioned.
>>
>>15949558
Yeah, although I can't blame him since AMA was the first time in years he commented on people and their actions when placed in certain situations. That alone was probably why he didn't mind humanizing the monsters, as they're used to add to the story.
>>
>>15949740
Too add on to what I just said right now, I think Honda disliked the humanized monsters in Ghidrah and Monster Zero because for the most part they're mostly semi-serious affairs with light touches of slapstick humor. The dance in MZ is jarring and the talking between the monsters in Ghidrah could have been changed too something far less obvious. Revenge doesn't change it's tone too much and it's children's film through and through.

Kurosawa's last few films were essentially co-directed, Honda just doesn't get credit for it and he didn't want it. Although, Honda is in need of a serious critical reevaluation. His skills and achievements do not get enough appreciation. Not even the Godzilla fandom gives him much credit as a lot of the time the focus is on fantasy battles or the more recent films.

Yeah, it's a shame how his widely known association with kaiju films has tinted his reputation. Which is made all the worse by the fact that most people can't place these films into proper context to judge them, not even the ones that aren't that bad. At one time some western film critics/historians apparently even thought there were two Hondas, because they couldn't fathom that the same guy worked on both the acclaimed Kurosawa films and the Godzilla movies which they considered worthless trash.

The childish direction Godzilla went was due to studio mandates and Honda hated it as early as King Kong vs Godzilla. Honestly, Mothra vs Godzilla - Monster Zero are probably only as good as they are because Honda put serious effort into maintaining some shred of credibility. It probably also helped that they were the last few Godzilla films to get a respectable budget until the Heisei Series. But to be fair, theater attendance in Japan was dropping fast and Toho looked to children to keep the franchise alive. Honda understood this, though he still felt it was possible to create family entertainment without the silliness that had started to creep into the films. I wonder how Godzilla films would be thought of today if the franchised concluded with Monster Zero in 1965 and didn't have to share the same name with films like Vs Megalon.

Does anyone know where to get the movies?

I've only ever watched the first Godzilla, but I want to watch all of them. All of them.

Preferably on bluray, but dvd is fine. Does anyone know who does the godzilla releases? Or is it like hammer horror where multiple companies have the distribution rights to different ones?

>where multiple companies have the distribution rights to different ones?
It's a nightmare and I doubt it'll be resolved anytime soon. The Western distribution rights for Godzilla movies are split between Sony (Funimation), Universal, Dreamworks (Classic Media), Section23 Films, Miramax, and Media Blasters. The American version of Return of Godzilla is apparently trapped in legal limbo but it was owned by the now defunct New World Pictures.
>>
>>15963843
iirc a lot of the (generally not-bad) AIP dubs of the old movies are in limbo so you get the goofy bad Toho international dubs
>>
>>15963846
Yes, I think you're right. And yeah, the AIP commissioned dubs were pretty good. Especially for Mothra vs Godzilla and Monster Zero. The last Godzilla movie AIP had anything to do with was Godzilla vs Hedorah and, except for a few cases, the other distributors since then haven't cared enough about the movies to not use awful dubs Toho gets from Hong Kong.

>The American version of Return of Godzilla is apparently trapped in legal limbo but it was owned by the now defunct New World Pictures.

“Between all the changes of ownership and title that have occurred after New World released their version, the fact that you’re dealing with two entirely different production teams belonging to different sets of unions, and the fact that music from another film by a different composer was reused in NW’s dub [GODZILLA 1985 used music from Christopher Young’s soundtrack for the New World Pictures movie DEF-CON 4]… there’s a point where it became clear that it just wasn’t going to happen. And it’s not just that it would cost more than the title could probably make to try and clear all the myriad of issues, but that you’d be on pins and needles waiting for someone to pop up and make a claim over something you’d missed for years afterward.”- Matt Greenfield of Kraken

Didn't say it was an faithful reproduction of Japanese speech. Just giving it credit for not being intolerable. Titra made some comfy dubs.

Some clarification: Titra Productions, on behalf of AIP, produced English language dubs for Mothra vs Godzilla, Sea Monster, Son of Godzilla, Destroy All Monsters, and Godzilla vs Hedorah. Only Mothra vs Godzilla and DAM have received official home media releases featuring the AIP commissioned dubs.

Well, what about the Toho Master Collection. Been doing some research, and it seems most of them are released with lots of extras.

I seem to find some on ebay ranging from twenty to fifty(which aint bad, considering the Friday the 13th collection I wanna get my paws on one day ranges in the hundreds of dollars range).

Only shitty thing is that theyre DvD, and I like my blurays. Oh well. As long as I have the movies, Im happy.

Any thoughts on those releases?
>>
why do so many fans recommend the heisei films to newcomers? they're pretty much the stereotypical films where you're supposed to fast forward to the fights
>>
>>15972167
I assume cause in theory most of the Heisei movies have surface-level aspects that might appeal to newcomers. Compared to the bulk of the Showa films, which are deeply associated with camp and schlock in the public's mind, Heisei movies try to have a more serious tone, more modern effects, more attempts at continuity, a fiercer looking, less humanized Godzilla with a clearer backstory, less overly cartoony shit, and they have interesting topics like cold war fears, eco-terrorism and atom bomb allusions.
But like I said, in theory. In execution, most of the Heisei films are sloppy as piss and hard to sit through. But to be fair, I could say the same about a lot of the older and later movies too, and the franchise as a whole can be hard to sell to newcomers.
>>

Not in /m/ though. No one likes Heisei except for Biollante.

Baragon because it's the qtiest kaiju

Also Varan because he just flies around like a goober and never hurts anyone. And kind of lame to pick such obvious choices, but Mothra and King Ghidorah are just good monsters.

Planet of Monsters because I'm a turboweeb who thinks if it isn't made by nips it's not Godzilla.

Which movies do you think work as actual movies and don't have to come with disclaimers?
>>
>>15973340
As far as movies that don't need the "it's a shitty godzilla movie but just accept it okay :^)))" disclaimer, the original and Shin. But even then, the original needs a "it's fucking old you can tell by looking at it and listening to it" disclaimer, while Shin might still repel ardent anti-weebs.
>>

Of course not everyone is going to be interested in foreign or older cinema. But, wow. Only two movies? You don't think Mothra vs Godzilla or GMK holds up to objective scrutiny? Neither is a masterpiece or anything, though I think they're finely crafted films and the latter does have higher ambitions.
>>
>>15973387
I wasn't thinking in terms of objective scrutiny, just in terms of recommending the movie to some normie. I think a lot of them would actually fair pretty well under objective scrutiny actually.
>>

>I think a lot of them would actually fair pretty well under objective scrutiny actually.
which ones wouldn't work?

Before anyone mentions Godzilla's Revenge, I believe it has one of the most compelling human dramas in the franchise buried underneath stock footage and pandering to kids

Dogora is a really boring movie with some of Tsuburaya's worst effects works, but I ain't gonna lie that soundtrack is awesome.

Worst than King Kong vs Godzilla? I know some people really like that movie and I know Kong was expensive to license... But the special effects are inexcusably awful. Even some of the later Showa films, which were victims of severe budget cuts, rival it in terms of consistency and quality.

Based on what I can tell from the trailer the effects of Dogora looks decent enough.
