***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

**RANGED GROUPBUILD**

Build/paint a kit (Gundam/Frame Arms/etc) with a loadout focused on long ranged combat! Sniper Rifles, Artillery Cannons, Missile Launchers, Funnels/Bits, and Miniguns are all fair game. You may also include a back-up melee weapons (Like a combat knife or beam saber) with your build, but it shouldn't overshadow your ranged equipment

More clarification here:
>Any scale and any brand is fair game here, you're not limited to just using Gundam models. The base kit needs to be a robot though (Sorry tankfags)
>You can however kitbash a tank with a Zaku/GM or something and submit that.
>The longer the barrel the better. Your average rifle/machine gun on a stock MS isn't gonna cut it.

>>

Are you me?

Don't give up, Anon!
>>
>>16029972
I'm never going to find the part, but I don't even care about finding it anymore. It's not like I'd be able to paint it properly even if I did. I'm just going to throw the kit that I was excited to have in the garbage, accept that I wasted time and money and maybe try to find another hobby that doesn't require any degree of skill that I'll never have.
>>
After I paint over a kit, how do I apply panel lining without it getting all over the place and being hard to clean up? Do I top coat after the paint and then panel line? or is there a better way to do this?
>>
>>16029978
Or... you could just try again and take more care not to lose pieces. This hobby is all about trial and error and patience. Maybe you can come up with a replacement? Or worst case try again during the next groupbuild.

Hell, I've fucked up every kit I've made. My last groupbuild's leg snapped off at the knee and I forgot to panel line it because it looked wildly different under my work lamp.

I've been in your shoes, and all I can say is that it comes down to want and perseverance. And bucket loads of antidepressants.
>>
>>16030022
Doesn't help that the paint I am using does not adhere and is basically impossible to get an even, spot free coat with. It literally makes me want to kill myself.
>>
Alright, figured out the issue. It's iridescent paint. Which in layman's terms means it looks absolutely stunning if you view it at the PERFECT angle, and if it's not at the right angle it looks like it's literally not even there (so you can paint it onto a part and not even see it, or you can turn your part a little and all of a sudden the perfectly smooth looking coat is full of patches where the plastic is visible)
I hate paint.

Does anyone build by "set?" Or just by what you like? I feel compelled to finish out a set of kits representing at least the suits in 0079, for example. I know there are many people who only do gunpla for the sake of model building though.

Thankfully, 0080-0083 only added like 9 major suits iirc.

They are waterslide decals. Some kits come with them, bandai sells official sheets sometimes, plenty of non-bandai companies sell or include them in kits, and samuel decals (his facebook, not his website) is a popular place to order third party ones.

Keep in mind that they are not peel and place stickers and you will need to topcoat.

They make models of things I want to buy and their plastic quality isn't too bad. They're no Bandai in the quality regard, my DM Akatsuki had a few pieces not molded properly meaning the plane backpack wasn't properly symmetrical and the red on one of the feet had a decent chunk missing out of it, but I've had no issues regarding fittings for the most part or their overall plastic quality.
Really looking forward to putting together the DM Avalanche Exia Dash, it looks like a really crazy build with all the shit it has on it.

For a third party/bootleg company - their plastic quality isn't too bad (note: I did not say good) and relatively cheap compared to actual Bandai/P-Bandai releases.

Not to mention they actually put out kits that Bandai seemingly doesn't want to put out.

I built the DM Sword Strike and it's probably going to be my last DM kit for a very long time - while the plastic isn't bad it's not exactly good either especially with the more delicate features like MG 2.0 hands and the like.

Akihabara

Just the F2 as far as I'm aware
>>
>>16031573

Yodobashi Camera, Bic Camera, yamada denki, Tamtam, Yellowsubmarine (if its not just a TCG outlet). The yellow submarine in Akihabara Radio Kaikan is also cool because you can just buy loose runners people have traded in from kits that they didn’t use in a kitbash. If you are just looking for parts from runners but don’t want a whole kit it’s nice but slightly pricy.

Also the airplane model store on the 5th (or 6th?) floors music is just the Ace combat zero ost.

Before people just say akiba i’ll warn you though be wary of some prices in Akihabara.

Akiba within the past few years has really filled up with gaijin. Shops know this and jack up the price of shit all over the place. While you can find crazy deals (like my formula 1 kit from xenoblade X i found for ¥3000 less than everywhere else) you also will find shit jacked up too.

If I was gonna rank them.
1. Yodobashi (resonable price, big selection)
2. Bic camera (cheaper than yodobashi by a bit but selection is limited)
3. Yamada denki (cheapest but limited slection)
4. Tamtam (cheap, few stores, limited selection)
5. Yellowsubmarine (Akihabara shop. Huge as fuck selection, prices are slightly higher)

If anybody else in tokyo/kanagawa area has a good shop they frequent tell me.

You missed a few locations in Akihabara, but considering that there's tons of places to find things, that's not hard.
- The AmiAmi store in the Radio Kaikan building has a selection of model kits, including Gunpla, Frame Arms, and FA:G.
- Volks Hobby Paradise has a whole ton of things across many categories. They're not always the cheapest, but sometimes you can find things that other places don't have.
- Check out Liberty and Traders. They specialize in second hand goods and there's a lot of treasure hunting that can be done. There are multiple locations all across Akiba.
- Check out the Akiba Cultures Zone building, especially Lashinbang.

>The yellow submarine in Akihabara Radio Kaikan is also cool because you can just buy loose runners people have traded in from kits that they didn’t use in a kitbash. If you are just looking for parts from runners but don’t want a whole kit it’s nice but slightly pricy.

There's a bit of perspective here. Yes, if you were to buy a whole kit's worth of parts from Yellow Submarine Parts Paradise, you'd be paying quite a bit more than a full kit. However, you could also see it as paying less than a full kit just to get the parts you want.

>>16031659
>Diver city is really overrated and has the highest prices i've seen in japan

The Gundam Base at Diversity is a store run by Bandai. Because of this, they have a huge selection of Gundam kits, but it's all at full MSRP prices.

Other things to note:
There are a number of stores that offer tax free sales if you make a purchase of a certain amount (usually over 5000yen) and show your passport. Each store has their own ruling, so be wary. For example:
- Volks has to be all done on the same purchase. If you want a tax free sale for items across multiple floors, you'll have to inform the staff.
- At Akiba Mandarake, you buy the items including tax on the different floors, and there's a tax adjustment station at ground floor.
>>
>>16031919
Oh, and one more thing about prices. If you have the time, take price notes between stores and shop around. There are always sales.

For example, in my recent trip, AmiAmi had lower prices than Yodobashi for FA:G.
>>
>>16031573

>>16031919

Yeah I knew there was places I had missed in Akiba. But typically they don’t have anything any cheaper than anywhere else so I neglected to mention them.

I assume if you’re going on a trip to Japan and specifically Akiba you would shop around. It’s definately good advice to keep a list of prices you have seen and then go back for cheaper stuff you want.

And yeah make sure you have space to bring this shit back. Don’t buy a shitload of stuff you can’t get home.

That being said at this point I isually just go to yodobashi to get stuff and check out other stores if i want something more obscure.

I have one of these and I stopped using it because there was often too many runners to fit on the stand and the runners had a tendency of snagging others or knocking the whole pile over and making a mess.

Nowadays I just keep them in the box on my lap as I build. It takes longer, but I'm not in a rush.

Anything similar to the Tamiya side cutters but cheaper?
>>
>>16032698
The cheap route to branded cutters is regular wire cutters+whittling with a knife +sanding.

Branded side cutters you paying for the harder steel and the precision grinding need to make the cutting edges sharp and flush.

Side cutters, not regular wire cutters. Wire cutters absolutely suck for clipping out parts as the just chew up the plastic more than cut it. Even nail clippers do a better job and you can pick those up for under $1.

If you absolutely must have some sort of super budget cutter that isn't nail clippers though pic related can be found at harbor freight.

Show me some new Zaku II Kais or Hygoggs or Z'Gok-Es or Kampfers, Anon.

The Rick Dom II is the only one that gets away simply because it's ridiculously similar to normal Doms/Rick Doms.

Albeit, the Kampfer got a little bit of love temporarily in GBF, but it was just the old kit with some added parts.

Issue is that GP01 exists in every grade while Alex gets dicked constantly to the point that it hasn't had a new kit since 2004 and I don't think Bandai has released any figure of it that can bend its limbs past like 80deg. Despite being of a similar age some of the other 0080 kits are really bad too, Gelgoog J looks like shit and both it and Guncannon D can barely bend their legs. They're no more likely to get a remake than Zaku III though. Kind of a piss off there's no MG Zaku Kai too considering Zaku I, R-1, R-2, F2, and Hizack got ones and it's the actual main character unit of the show.

Bugs me less than never getting a goddamn Gottrlatan of any kind though.

Sunrise Group Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Bandai Namco Group and Bandai Corporation (headquartered in Taito, Tokyo), chairman and President Kawaguchi removed the counterfeit Gundam model brand "Dragon Momoko" in Shantou, Guangdong Province, China for the massive manufacture and sale of copyright infringement. A criminal complaint to the police was filed to pursue the the parties involved. Shanghai Public Security accept the case, Bureau Fengxian Branch investigated and dealt with "Longpezi's production plant" in September 2017, seized molds and a large amount of model counterfeit goods and detained the person in charge of the plant and transferred it to Shanggou City Fengxian District People's Compound. During Dragon Momoko factory investigation at the same time, the police discovered two large Taobao shops were also involved. In recent years, China and other countries have found a large number of counterfeit goods in circulation in the market. These products from the packaging design to the actual product are copied from Bandai product. We are very grateful to the Chinese police for their positive response and assistance to this charge. We will continue to cooperate with their judiciary system, including the prosecution, in accordance with Chinese laws in the ensuing process. At the same time, in order to provide consumers with better products, better service, maintenance and enhancement of brand image, we will continue to devote ourselves to intellectual property protection in the future and urge consumers and formal sales of businesses to guard against counterfeit goods. Civil, criminal and other legal measures will continue to be adopted to crack down on intellectual property infringement.

I thought basic shit like this was common sense in gunpla general not 6 months ago. What the fuck happened. Anyway, anon, test on some spare runner of said plastic if you're scared before you do anything and you will be fine. Good luck.
>>
>>16034151
Did you not prime before painting?
>>
>>16034156

Would you do the same before painting ABS with heavy/wet layers of gloss lacquer paint or is the ABS-lacquer scare a meme?
>>
>>16034174
Anything lacquer paint on palstic is to be aware of.

That said that doesn't mean NO NO DON'T DO IT. It just means apply thinly and carefully and know your steps and paint kinds/reactions. Test before you do. Boom, you won't be "scared" any more.

Speaking of lacquer on plastic, what about mr super clear matt on bare plastic? First time top coating so I just wanna make sure I don't mess up.
I want to top coat my RG without painting, both the inner frame and the outer armor pieces but will the lacquer top coat do much damage to the plastic, especially the inner frame since it's ABS?
I plan on going through in this order,
>thin first layer on inner frame and individual outer armor pieces
>let dry for 1/2 hours
>second layer
>let dry for another 1/2 hours
>assembly
Is this the right way to go about it? Do I need to wait for the second layer to fully cure before assembly, or just waiting 1/2 hours for it to dry would be enough?

For a chinese company they were good and in a couple specific cases maybe, but overall no.

This is laughable. And the reason they went after them isn't that Bandai as a whole felt threatened or were taking big losses or anything, it's their chinese branch and distributor. Local sales were being threatened so it worked its way up the chain to headquarters and over to Sunrise to do something about it.

>>
>>16034770

Can you elaborate? I was thinking that a dark grey might fit "realistic" color schemes better than colorful ones, did you mean something like that?
>>
>>16034802
Pretty much. If I want to pretend it's a war machine I tend to avoid overuse of metallics and go with a more tank-inspired, grey-jointed look, but if it's a cool alien-like design that isn't necessarily realistic I might use some cool metallics and brighter, shinier paint.
It really depends, though. There aren't really set rules for this kind of thing. Especially in SF models it's more about artistic feeling than anything else I'd say.

Yeah it makes sense if you want to go for a grittier look but I felt lazy every time I considered it since it skips a step. Might be a good middle ground between the high gloss metallic and going for grey.

I'll try to convince myself to do it on my current build since I'll do it "realistic" in terms of colors anyway. Though the kit itself looks alien as hell.

Parts paradise is great if you need specific parts from multiple kits it’s only a total crapshoot if you need one part from one kit and you’re paying ¥500 yen for parts when the full kit is only ¥1200-1600 yen anyway.

At that point you might as well just get the whole kit for the extra shit anyway.

Please stop using the word "monopoly" where it doesn't belong...Bootleg fanboys use this word to suggest that Bandai has unethically taken over the market of "gunpla", and that bootleggers are simply trying to grab a piece of the market, but that's just wrong & dumb. Gunpla isn't a market, it's a product. It's Bandai's product, their IP, their designs which they paid a lot to make, their R&D, their engineering etc. Bootleggers aren't just innocent companies trying to join in, but jerks that try to capitalize off of Bandai's hard work & investment. They could very well make their own model kit robots, unrelated to the Gundam franchise, and that would be fine, but what they're doing is illegal.
So no, there's no monopoly, and Bandai aren't evil corporate overlords - in fact, Gunpla is quite reasonably priced for what you get. I don't care what you buy, but don't try to defend bootleggers as simply being attacked by the evil Bandai monopoly

There was an auction in Belfast last week, seems an anime hobby shop got shut down and all its stock repossessed.
The starting price for everything was a fiver, including high end Star Wars figures and Perfect Grade gunpla.
Obviously, most of the stuff went pretty high (a PG GP01 went for £101), but there were a few bargains too (PG RX-78 for £60, a few of my gets).
It was pretty much a one-off thing, someone posted about it on here and on /toy/ the day before it happened.
