So I generally don't like eastern mech shows for various reasons. But The Big O looks pretty damn cool just looking at pictures on google. Is this show any good? Would this show appeal to someone who doesn't typically like eastern mech shows?
>>
>>16169445
Big O was intended to appeal to Western audiences, so probably.
>>
>>16169445
Big O is basically Batman (the animated series) but with mechs. Westerners were the target audience and it's most popular in the west than east.
>>
>>16169449
That's cool beans man. No offense to Gundam folks but none of the Gundam shows grabbed my interest.
>>
>>16169445
It's excellent -- the first season more than the second, but both are good.
>>
>>16169456
No kidding? I'll definitely give this show a shot just from that description alone. I've tried a bunch of eastern mech shows before actually but stumbled on this, figure I'd get some opinions on it.
>>
>>16169445
The second season gets a little nutty and is a step down but still has a few really strong episodes. The ending is one of those "interpret it however you want" type of anime endings which is a little frustrating since the show is based around its central mystery (which is answered technically but opinions will vary on how well).

Overall it's Batman TAS with a giant robot and a snarky mecha maid. The episodic first season is fantastic on its own.

It's fun and you should watch it.
>>
>>16169462
I popped in to lurk on some threads and saw many people say this is a problem in general for anime. Can't say myself tho
>>
>>16169469
>this is a problem in general for anime
Anime tends to do the opposite of hollywood when it comes to sequels. Hollywood likes to rehash and just do the same thing while in anime they tend to stray too far just to differentiate itself or to try and add unneccesary depth.
>>
>>16169467
I'll give it a go, I'm glad people make western cartoon comparisons. People recommend anime to me and I usually don't like it. Don't hate it but me and my friends might be cut from a different cloth ya know? Show sounds badass tho, about to start watching it. Would like to find a legal site to watch it on.
>>
>>16169471
Sounds fair to me. Not the biggest fan of Hollywood myself nowadays but I can see what you're saying.
>>
>>16169472
Well, keep in mind that this board isn't just anime either. Most mecha stuff is anime, but that doesn't keep us from enjoying Megas XLR, a lot of the western Transformer cartoons, The Iron Giant and so on
>>
stop saying eastern mech shows you fucking idiot nobody is talking about cubix here so its pretty clearly only japanese

actually when you say eastern mech show it implies that you are a fan of western mech shows, all ten of them, when half are transformers shows and half of the other half are anime parodies

why you on /m/ homie
>>
The Big O is pretty solid and I think it's not like there are many shows like it, Eastern or Western.

The OST is awesome and I'd call Roger The Wanderer episode one of most touching cartoon episodes I've ever seen.
>>
>>16169445
It was pretty much tailor made for a western audience, to the point where Cartoon Network bankrolled the second season after the first did so well on Toonami. Having an excellent English dub starring Steve Blum of Cowboy Bebop fame doesn't hurt either.
>>
>>16169494
A thousand times this. "western /m/" is generally a barren wasteland.

Why on /m/? For the reason I posted? Yes I get West Mech is slim pickins for show, usually talk about vidya. But check the pic sucka.
>>
>>16169501
Yeah i'm gonna give it a go, just gotta find a place to watch it.

Implying western mech isn't a thing?
>>
>>16169494
It's not like there's a powered armor at the center of one of the most popular current western franchises or anything.
>>
>>16169536
Yeah that response was a little odd to say the least. But first few people were pretty damn cool. Didn't think it would devolve into a hate thread tho.

>Me: Hey not typically a fan but would this be best suited for my taste?

>Rando:EAST ONLY REEEEE

Like really?
>>
You know, it's weird, but mecha works seem to try to appeal to western audiences a lot more frequently than anime in general does. Aside from Big O, there's
Metropolis (2001), based on the Tezuka manga based on the Fritz Lang film
The entire Metal Gear franchise
Gun X Sword, which feels actually inspired by the "western" genre albeit only a handful of episodes share the aesthetic
Giant Gorg, which starts in NYC, has the protagonist as the only Japanese person, and watches kind of like a classic exploration adventure story a la The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym, but with mecha fights
Tiger & Bunny, which is basically a western superhero/murder mystery story starring two dudes in power armor

There's a few others I could list as well if I wanted to stretch it, but I'll leave it at that
>>
>>16169543
You shouldn't expect much from some idiot tripfag that only started posting last year.
>>
>>16169548
PHG's a big asshole, but I'm pretty sure he's been around longer than that. Anyways that's not the point. Big O's cool.

It's actually one of the few must-watch mecha shows out there. There're a few stand out things about the show that separates it from other mecha shows. The music track is top notch. The mecha battles are play out as the huge heavy behemoths they are as opposed to the the zippy anime style you normally see. The "noir" tone of the show is very prevalent and there aren't many typical bright and cutesy anime types all over the place.

Some things to consider is that the main plot can be confusing if you're not paying attention. If you didn't pick up the clues along the way, the ending just feels like a one big cluster fuck. Also, the art transitions to digital drawings for the second season. It was the early-days of digital animation so it looks pretty harsh and off-putting compared to the traditional animation of the first season.

TLDR: I forbid you to post on this board any more until after you've watched the first few episodes.

right on absolutely all accounts

also wrong on all accounts: the posters who said big o was made with western audiences in mind at all when it was originally just going to be a weird one cour series with unrevealed mysteries.

>>16169548
I've actually just started posting recently so i'm new myself.

>>16169562
Yeah the Noir I noticed which made me really curious about it. I'll make sure to be super attentive. I'd prefer to watch on legal stream site but I can't find any.
>>
>>16169574
Still looks pretty neat just from the descriptions here. All Mech recommended to me was Gundam and a few others I couldn't get into. Figure I'd get some opinions and do some research.
>>
>>16169578

Kissanime has The Big O both subbed and dubbed. Don't know about its legal status though, in my country there are no problems with the site.

Also, it doesn't hurt to tell people your preferences before asking for recommendations, lest they just toss at you their favorite shows (that may have no points of interest to you).
>>
>>16169645
Yeah I prob have to give up on the whole "legal" side of it.

>Also, it doesn't hurt to to tell people your preferences before asking for recommendations

That's fair, and a poor choice on my part.
>>
>>16169578
Ironically, the one I enjoyed the most out of that list I gave you was Tiger & Bunny, it was so much more clever than I was expecting. But Gun X Sword was the definite number 2, not counting MGS3, which is still my favorite video game after all this time

If you're a fan of Western mecha I really recommend you check out Votoms. You might like Ryosuke Takahashi's other works like Dougram, but I think Votoms is the best one to start with.
>>
>>16169645
Kissanime is definitely illegal. Honestly if you're going to illegally watch anime (and most of us here do), at least torrent it and don't support scumbag streaming sites.
>>
>>16169902

I dunno, I just watch anime too seldom to really care about legal bullshit. As of supporting whatever scumbag sites, it sounds like that "supporting porn by streaming it" argument.
>>
>>16169445
>So I generally don't like eastern mech shows for various reasons.
Fuck off then
>>
>>16169645
>Kissanime
I'm pretty sure that you can just watch it on YT instead going to those ad-filled pirate sites.

It actually looks worse on youtube
>>

Then stop being a streamfag
>>
>>16169445
If you end up liking Big O check out Tetsujin (2004) and the Giant robo OVA.
