So, here's the /m78/ thread.
So, during a live stage show in Japan, the action was cut short when a rainstorm suddenly hit.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHbZfjpJpR8
MechaBaltan decided to beat up a few other Baltans while they waited for the rain to ease up, all while dancing to Ultraman themes.

>manga Vol. 9 came out in October
>vol. 10 doesn't come out until May

The gap between releases has never been this wide. What's the deal?
>>
>>16186031
They've caught up with Japan, it's a monthly manga with 6 chapters or so to a volume, do the maths from there.

I like the original look. Or at least the idea behind it.

I think it's a bit of a shame they haven't revisited the idea of a more organic look. Maybe if they ever do an animu separate from the M78 stuff.
>>
>>16186252
Well I have good news and bad. Good news is you're getting that anime mostly separate from M78. Bad news is that Ultraman definitely does not look organic.

Also guys, just a general question here. Sometimes an Ultra has to keep his identity a secret so he can stay on Earth, I get that. But why do people like Tiga and Gaia try to hide their identity from their friends?
>>
>>16186837
>Bad news is that Ultraman definitely does not look organic.
Yeah, I'm familiar. I haven't read the manga either, but I know the gist of its premise.

Honestly it surprises me that toku hasn't dipped into animated adaptations more.
>>

>Honestly it surprises me that toku hasn't dipped into animated adaptations more
Why would it?
>>
>>16187654
Well, it took Godzilla almost 70 years to get a fucking anime.
>>
What does “m78” mean? Isn’t this just the Ultraman thread? Pardon the newbie question
>>
>>16187837
M78 is where the Ultramen live. Planet M78.
>>
>>16187839
Oh ok, thanks!

I liked Tiga when i was little and I’m just now seriously getting into Toku, I’ll have to watch more Ultraman stuff
>>
>>16187845
No wrong place to start with Ultraman. The series are loosely connected, the most you'll have is a previous Ultra or a monster from a different series show up. In Mebius though, they have a bit of history, it's easy to follow though.
>>
>>16187847
I’ll probably jump around a bit considering how many series there are, but focus on the original series and Tiga, any specific favorites I should check out?

I always figured it was a Prime Directive type thing, with a bit of the superhero "my enemies could to me through you" trope for flavor.

What other tokusatsu shows do you like? Do you watch older shows?

Mostly heisei kamen rider, a few super sentai, but I'm definitely willing to watch older shows. I became interested in ultraman because I hear about how good the older shows are.

>>16204975
Well, most of the stuff on Crunchy is solid. Just don't watch Nexus first. It's great, but it's great because how much it turns the regular Ultraman formula on its head
Personally I'd go with Max for class Ultra feel with modern CGI, Gaia for more heisei Ultraman style, or 80 for that truly Showa stuff for starter
>>
>>16204991
Okay, thanks anon
>>
>>16204975
There's really a ton of great shows.
Ultraseven is my favorite overall, each episode feels like a tiny film.
If you like anime from the 90s, Gaia really catches that spirit.
Tiga is modern(-ish) but without an over-arching plot, feels like a halfway point between showa and heisei.
I'll second Max, a lot of very strong individual episodes from past and current directors.
>>
>>16204995
I'd suggest Mebius, good for introducing the showa Ultras.

>>16205033
Oh, so that one image I keep seeing about Ultraman not saving anything is from Mebius. What subs should I get for Mebius?

>>
>>16204867
I don't see any reason to avoid watching the original series. Some episodes are better than others, but most of it is pretty good and a lot of the work with miniatures is fun and impressive given the budget even today.

It's not as good as Ultraseven, but there isn't an Ultra show that is.

That HD version is a fan product, old audio synced to the Blu Ray Ultraseven video. As someone who was watching when they aired I appreciate it, but yeah not recommended for a first viewing.

>>16207164
>I was under the impression that it was mostly the goofy rewrite that was the issue, that's why Seven dub video was used to restore that one episode

It varies by episode, I don't think the dub was produced in episode order. The first few episodes are pretty faithful (as noted, they all have at least a few jokes added) save for cuts to violence, and even use some of the Japanese music. The biggest offender to me is the music, which gets into some bad and lazy synth cues. The jokes are corny. One episode is renamed something like "Wayne, Lord of the Universe". It's just enough to enjoy for sake of nostalgia while not undercutting the drama of the show, at least if you are familiar with the originals. It was cool to find out we had a banned episode, at least.

Since the dub was part of the Turner library, clips of the show turned up in a few episodes of Space Ghost: Coast to Coast.

Except Riku actively tries to redeem Belial, and gives him an opportunity for forgiveness.

Granted, Belial rejects it because he’s animated purely by sheer salt at this point

But Geed’s take on that sort of thing is much more merciful than, say, Kamen Rider.

I get that we want to push new toys every year, but for once, just once, I'd like to see someone reuse all the outdated toys for the gimmick, like an Ultraman who can use the dolls, card, and capsule or a Rider whose belt can use everything from the Gaia Memories to the shift cars.
>>
>>16217346
To be fair, in all the post-show appearances, gimmick ultras tend to use their gimmicks pretty well- Ginga and Victory use spark dolls and not just Ginga Victory, X uses the Cyber Cards, and we're clearly seeing Orb use his Fusions Ups still, even if Origin is the strongest form.
>>
>>16217351
It's more a complaint with Riders, but I see your point
Is Origin stronger than Trinity? The skillet sword is that much of a power up?
>>
>The skillet sword is that much of a power up?
The sword is the main body.
Gai as Ultraman loses steam when he loses grip of the sword.
>>
>>16217346
Didn't OOO just recently got a shitload of form using previously unused core medal?
>>
Final Ultraman will have the Plasma Spark instead of the Color Timer, Ultra Bell on its forehead, and Ultra Key be the main weapon.
>>
>>16211100

It looks like a form showcase. You can see Origin in the top left of that page.
>>
>>16217341

He restores King from being stuck trying to keep the universe from falling apart, but the capsule remains.
>>
It probably won't happen anytime soon, but I'd like a show that got rid of the gimmick/form wankery.

Some of them do look neat but it's just sort of irritating to me.

>watching the OG Ultraman for the first time
>Get to the Jamila episode

I had heard about it, but holy shit.

That was way heavier than I expected.
>>
>>16218582

Ultra has been in a steep decline for years. The collectable gimmicks/multiple forms started with Ginga brought it back to life. They're not going anywhere.
>>
>>16218705
Showa shows didn't shy away from the heavier subjects
>>
>>16218718

I had already seen Ultraseven straight through, and parts of 80 and Leo. I've been meaning to see the original series for awhile, and finally started working through it a couple weeks ago.

But the rest of the first Ultraman series is much lighter than Seven, coming from a more childlike idealism. This episode wasn't just dark in terms of the plot, it was dark in how the characters discussed the conflict itself. Questioning the hypocrisy of their superiors, and whether they'd be shown the same treatment if their lives proved inconvenient for politics.

I mean, I'm sure Hayata was thinking what his own government would do to him if they knew he was Ultraman, after having to fight against Jamila.
>>
>>16218716

More than the gimmicks, I wish Ultra shows would do more with the sci-fi anthology format of the older series. Shorter seasons let them use their budget more effectively, but I miss the more varied genre and plots that series like Tiga and Seven got a chance to explore.
>>
>>16218716
I know, hence the "it probably won't happen anytime soon." I have plenty of older Ultra shows to watch and enjoy, though, so I'm not too bothered.
>>16218705
It has some goofy and clumsy writing but the original series is smarter than a lot of people expect, it seems. I had a similar experience.
>>
>>16218718
There was also Spell Seijin from Ultraseven who looked like a radiation burn victim
>>
>>16218740
>It has some goofy and clumsy writing but the original series is smarter than a lot of people expect, it seem

It does some clever things with how it frames some episodes in terms of effects and cinematography.

It knows exactly what it wants to do and how to convey it to the audience.

This is such a BS cop-out
I absolutely love it, Return of Ultraman had already very quickly become my favourite of the Ultra series I've seen so far and a new weapon like this could do wonders for the fight scenes which (admittedly) haven't been quite as well choreographed as the Ultra Seven ones, even if I've found them more engaging because of Jack's seemingly much lower power level

trademarks
"Pentagon jr" is a trademark of AAA.
He wasn't even the first guy to use the Pentagon name in AAA. The basic Pentagon gimmick goes back previous to even his tenure as Dark Dragon.
So like LA Park before him, after leaving AAA he came up with ORIGINAL NAME DO NOT STEAL.
iirc he had a few less-dumb looking versions in mind like Penta Cero Miedo but AAA went full Harmony Gold and tm-ed a bunch of names that him and Fenix might use on the indies.

But as long as Mr Mecha Wolf 450 is still out there it's hard to have the dumbest name on the card.

I'm not sure but I don't think Penta's ever worked with any of the Ultraman wrestlers down there.
>>
>>16231884
If AAA is determined to fuck him over, he may as well just get a new name. People will always end up calling him Pentagon anyway, so why not go with something else, like an animal like his brother or some other shap like a trapezoid.
>>
>>16231900
meh, from what I've read he's pretty confident he's got Penta el 0M locked down, and it seems to be working good enough
I think if AAA was going to take a swing at the 0M name they probably would have done so already

So, after having only watched the original Ultraman, I'm finally watching Ultra Seven and never have I been so conflicted on a show.

On the one hand, the show has some solid writing most of the time, with very strong and surprisingly relevant morality tales. Not all episodes end happily, and I appreciate that.

On the other hand, the Ultra Guard side cast feel no where nearly as memorable as the Science Patrol. I can still name most of the Science Patrol from memory. I can barely remember any Ultra Guardsmen that aren't Dan or the Captain. Also, the monsters look a lot worse than the original series, and they seem to have really cut down the amount of screen time dedicated to kaiju fighting compared to the original. I really think they shot themselves in the foot by making every episode about aliens invading. In the original, a kaiju could be an alien, a random dinosaur, a mutant from a science experiment gone wrong, etc.
>>
>>16237014
OG Man is a show about a team fighting random grab bag of enemies and Ultraman coming to save them
Seven is a show about Dan and his fight against mostly ayyys
They are very different shows depending on what you are looking for.

Also, where the fuck is Baltan? He's my favorite Ultra-Kaiju and I would've thought he'd be all over a show about fighting aliens, but he is no where to be seen.
>>
>>16237101
Seven wasn't originally planned as a sequel, hence the lack of connection to anything OG Man, including recasting Arashi
Baltan comes back in Jack and 80
>>
>>16237138
Ah makes sense. I’m guessing that means no kaiju returning from the original?

I guess it does seem weird to have the Science Patrol and the Ultra Guard both doing essentially the same job.

I'll agree with this, except for comparing Hayata and Dan. Hayata always felt so lifeless, Dan was a breath of fresh air just. He wasn't even written all that much better, Kohji Moritsugu just did a great job. But for the rest, yea, the Ultra Guard could never match Ide and Arashi (even if NotArashi was there).
>Also, the monsters look a lot worse than the original series, and they seem to have really cut down the amount of screen time dedicated to kaiju fighting compared to the original.
Possibly, but I would argue the choreography was a lot better in Seven. They seemed to be experimenting a lot more with what sorts of movements they could get away with, as well as going for more adventurous filming methods.

>Possibly, but I would argue the choreography was a lot better in Seven
The issue here is Seven seems to avoid close combat and just open up with his ranged, insta-kill attacks. Ultraman usually saved the Specium Ray as a last-resort/finishing move. I'm not too far into Seven, but he seems to drop all pretexts and go straight for the kill. Maybe the fights get better later, but so far it's just a lot of shoving and then either blasting them apart or cutting them in half.
For want of making my taste clear, I consider this the gold standard of Ultraman fights:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaICDtGpsvI

>>16243298
I actually watched a clip with him in it. It's cool that he came back but... I'm not crazy about him. His claws are too short, and he doesn't have that same menacing laugh his father had.
