***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data from images when they're uploaded to the website from your phone, including the orientation display tag. To solve this, save your images out separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the image itself for you.
One commonly used app that works well on Android:

Nearly done my first proper build, just left to make a new V-Fin, redo panel-lines, panel-line parts not yet done and clean up nub-marks on the joints and look at maybe gluing the forearms since they split slightly if you change the hands out. I feel pretty bad for this kit, it's nice (bar the feet which have an annoying tendency to pop off easily) and I've basically butchered it.

It depends on the law in your country, here in the UK if a package is labelled as having tax to pay before it can be delivered and they deliver it anyway the post office has to eat the fees as it was their mistake.

I'm sure our increasingly Orwellian government will change that at their earliest convenience however.

Alright folks, here's the results for the Fantasy Group Build.

Coming out of nowhere in a landslide victory was The Grimzock, with the Sigtyr Reincar coming in second place! I'll be in touch with the builders of both later tonight to discuss prizes/shipping. Meanwhile the Wing Gundam Horus claimed best paintjob! Congrats to the all the builders that took place in the Groupbuild

Gonna whip up a post discussing the next build in a bit.

Anyways, respond to this post with any suggestions for what the next Groupbuild should be. As always 2nd-5th place from the last poll make it into the next poll automatically, but any other suggestions are alright as long as we haven't done them before.

>Deep Space Groupbuild (Build a mobile suit that would see heavy space usage. Alternatively, alien MS)
>Super Robot Groupbuild (Build a mobile suit with the aesthetics/loadout of a super robot (Original or based off an existing one)
>GM Groupbuild (Build a mobile suit with "GM" in it's name or model number. (i.e, Jegans (RGM-93) are fine but Nemos (MSA-003) are not)
>Elemental Groupbuild (Build a mech themed around an element of your choosing (Fire/Water/Ice/Air/Electricity/Earth/etc)

I'm also gonna throw in a choice from an older poll too, since we had a few entries that fit the criteria this time around
>Knockoff Groupbuild (Build a MS based off of a non-gundam mecha/character using only Gundam parts)

I'll take any choices in this thread and throw a poll together once we hit a new thread.

>>
>>16594495
This.
>>
>>16594489
Not that anon but I think what can work for a Build Divers group build is blend 2 kits together, one will be the base and the other for its special quirks to put on the base. Like in the anime, there was a GN-X but customized with parts from AGE-1 Titus and it works similarly to it. If I were to enter a group build like that I would for example use a Jegan as a base and mix it with Jagd Doga, parts of the Jagd Doga would carry over to the Jegan, funnels, leg armor etc. If that explains anything
>>
>>16594489
GBD is airing, I feel obligated to push this.

>what you'd use playing GBD?
Precisely. With New Gundam Breaker being delayed I'm just really itching for some fun customization.

Maybe add the rule that it needs to have at least a few parts from another kit or scratchbuilt parts?
>>
>>16594477
Yeah for some reason despite Build Fighters getting HGs for most of the main suits the Abigorbine never got one, likely because no modern Abigor kit to modify into the GBF custom. That's probably why Dualla's second suit, the Hambrabi Suban, ended up getting a kit, albeit a P-Bandai one.
>>
>>16594512
Let's not rule out more simple builds. Remember Rommel's crew had the all Zaku team.
>>
>>16594509

Not him, but they're more often than not just so boring to build. Almost all of them just come down to make the joints and sandwich the armor between it. MGs and RGs are much more interesting.
And fuck saftey nubs on the v-fins. Those are a metric pain in the ass to remove.

Yesterday I went to my nearest hobby shop to buy a Zaku II FZ or just a good Zaku II variants, but too bad they ran out of stock. So the only Zaku they have is this, HGUC The ORIGIN Zaku I. Also I bought the HG Build Custom Ez ARMS because they have dank cannon and missile launcher.

So far I liked the result, except that Ez ARMS' left joint were broken when I installed it's missile launcher. Done a simple lining and it looks a bit better for me. Although there are some mistakes during th building proccess (i.e. some white marks can't virtually removed even with exacto knife and sand paper), but yeah, this is my first time building gunpla and I enjoyed it.

Future plan: Repainting, adding more dakka and accessories, kit bashing with other HG Zaku I variant, I guess...
>>
>>16594520
thats why you customize them, what the fuck

the entire point of HGs is they're easy for kids, and fun to work with as adults
>>
>>16594476
So, what was you entry?
>>
>>16594525
Because I don't want to customize it, is that concept so hard to grasp? If I buy a HG, 9/10 times it's because it's a suit that's not available in MG form.

What a theme that was!
Great entries from everyone, and as a lot of people have said the customisation was a real step up this build - lots of custom parts and really neat paint effects. As soon as I saw a few of the WIPs of some of the entries I knew I didn't stand a chance, but I'll be damned if it wasn't fun taking part anyway.

This is my fourth group build entry and thus, as I'm a bit of a lazy bastard, my fourth painted model. I'm the one responsible for the awful, awful entry that created That One Screenshot complaining about groupbuilds - my excuse is that it was my first ever painted kit - but I have to say, it's the groupbuilds that have actually been pushing me to attempt new stuff and improve the basics.

All that being said, I think Lizardman was my favourite entry and incredibly underrated - I love the design, dude!

About the decal, I think you can make it yourself with waterslide decal paper. Basically just print your favourite company logo and you're set.

>>16594665
I've personally commented on it (negatively) twice now, and I had no kit in, nor did I have a kit that was standout/wanted to win.

I just think it was cheeky as fuck and got a meme win versus a true victory due to building skill and execution. Was it built well? Yes it was pretty good, but most of the design was very simple and largely involved sanding it into that nugget shape. The paint quality was pretty good, but it was a huge singular surface. The arms were barely customized to maintain some sense of the kit, which is fair but boring.

I think a better way to do this kit would be with plaplate + reductive sanding versus basically sculpting an entirely new body. Thankfully the mouth was at least customized/worked on pretty heavily.

The biggest thing though, I think, is that it was a meme win. It won because it was funny, unexpected, etc. It was not the best built, it did not require the most work, it was not the most impressive.
>>
>>16594726
In series the space version was literally just the regular thunderbolt GM with a couple new parts. The ground versions were literally just thunderbolt gm kai with a couple new parts. They weren't ground types adapted to space, it was literally just a gundam-head squad.
>>
>>16594670
Maybe it would look good with
>f91 head
>f91 body
>f91 shoulder
>f91 waist
>unicorn arms
>unicorn legs
>VSBR
>somehow figure out how to mount unicorn backpack around the F91 torso
Then throw in the custom paint and you might have something. Gonna take some work. Sucks that you need to choose Unicorn or Destroy Mode in HG form(?), not sure which I'll go with. Maybe I'll do Unicorn mode parts and just panel line in blue.
>>
>>16594744
Aren't that ground type made from spare part surpluses from original RX-78?
>>
>>16594610
Just a general "Grunt build" sounds a bit too open ended since it just becomes the "Not a Gundam groupbuild", plus there's already a GM groupbuild and a Leo one on the list.

Concept is always a major factor in pretty much every modeling contest scoring. You literally can't cut it out and it makes your kit stand out above the rest. Anon had a creative concept for the fantasy theme and displayed enough skill to pull it off well.

What do I need to do to not get these nasty marks that I can’t sand off?

>>
>>16595161
>nose
>mouth
>chest is a big airconditioner
Are there people who unironically like this design?
>>
>>16595177
Don't cut against the piece. Get a hobby knife and cut down until it gets pretty close, then sand. Cutting with nippers at the part can actually pull some of the plastic up with the force of the cut, which is what causes those ugly gouges.
>>
>>16595162
Yeah, it's the first thing I noticed when I started.

>>16595165
I agree, the standard gundam faceplate is much better.
I used the transforming gimmick head, but there's the option for set heads too, which is pretty nice. Think Unicorn having both a Unicorn and Destroy Mode head as separate builds.

The LED feels like a waste of money because it requires the stand, which is completely set.
Maybe I'll make an articulated base at some point.

>>16595177
Cutting against the piece causes the marks - they're called stress marks from the nippers stretching the plastic as they cut.
Leave about a mil of sprue left and the either sand it down or cut it with a knife.

Depends on how deep the gouge is. Your best option is to get some putty and full the gap, then sand everything down flat. Then you can paint over it .
>>
>>16593966
if it's the ultra fine one, you don't need to shake those. The ones you need to shake have a ball bearing inside to mix the paint and you can hear it like when shaking a rattle can.

That is weird that it blew up though. I've shaken mine a lot wondering if it would help make it more consistent and it didn't seem to have any effect.

I'm normally an advocate of bulk shipping, but for an order of that size, I honestly don't know. 7 MGs, 1 PG, and an RG is by far larger than anything I've ever ordered. It might be cheaper to split them up into smaller MGS/RG/PG and Bigger MGs. Personally, I would cut back on half of that.

Also, look into Mandarake. Unless I'm preordering a figure from amiami or 1999, I order exclusively from them because they're cheaper a vast majority of the time.

I used to watch their anime, espescially in UC timeline. When I was in anime convention last year, there's a gunpla exhibit that shows their dank custom builds, which makes me intrigued to buy gunpla.

Now here I am, just started recently. It's fun and satisfying.

Honestly guys, I think grimzock is the best build ever posted here. I don’t think anyone can top it.
>>

Before. Helps if you stick all the different parts of each limb/section into a separate bag that way you don't misplace a part after painting.

Not to mention the quality difference. Games Workshop recently jumped forward I’ll admit - from a 1970’s to a 1980’s level of plastic casting technology - but their prices are insane. Even middlemanning a good P-Bandai release is a sounder financial investment than something like a Land Raider.

To be honest compared to the level of engineering, fit and finish you’d get from Bandai, Tamiya, etc even things like the Knights are a bit of a joke. Super-basic kits, very low casting/plastic quality, take a massive amount of work even before priming to look good - oh, and you could pretty much buy a Perfect Grade for the same price from somewhere like Mandarake. Ridiculous.

No... well most are pretty solid. I still bitch about the Nightingale not being able to bend its arm more and the Gundam MK III's lower legs should be thicker. They're mostly good like 60/40 good to wonky, but the Jagd Doga is already having issues which is disappointing. Kit wise they're fine (except the nightingale's elbows) It just that it seems like they dont spend enough time in the design phase, and are like, yep that looks close enough, print it. Things that are easier fixed in the early stages of development rather than modding it once it comes out

>>
Just fapped to this, it’s fucking hilarious. I always love it when my doujins add a touch of humor
>>
>>16596446
It's not any harder than anything else (apart from maybe the Hyaku Shiki since that's plated and it'll be obvious if you fuck up), I only put it last because it's the most recent and you'll see the largest improvement.
I just finished mine. Articulation is pretty nice - the hips swivel forward quite significantly so you can pull off some great aerial poses, and the knees have a weird little forwards movement to them to help you get a tighter bend.
I find the foot vents and head antennae are a little loose (nothing that can't be fixed with a dab of plastic cement) and he has a bit of trouble holding his VSBR at first, but these are tiny problems.
It's a great little kit, lots of surface detail and it's definitely an improvement over the original MG.
>>
>>16596476
>it'll be obvious if you fuck up
Youre fucking joking. I suck so much balls with my nubs, it’s not even funny. I don’t even want to touch the hyaku shiki. Is it really that hard?
>>
>>16596479
Do you leave them sticking out or do you gouge the plastic? Either way, you're going to have a hard time.
Just make sure to cut the piece from the runner with about 1 millimetre of sprue still on the piece, then cut it flush with a knife, or lightly sand it.
This will give you a relatively even surface without damage to the surrounding area.

The kit does help by having a huge majority of the pieces undergated, so you won't see many marks once it's put together. However, there are a few problem areas - there's no better way to explain it than with some pictures.
http://www.gaijin-gunpla.com/2015/06/mg-hyakushiki-2-0-review/
>>
>>16596484
I gouge it like I’m oedipus rex, it’s awful. Usually I can get it to go away if I sand everything, but there’s been a few times when I just have to leave a massive white mark on the middle of the piece. Even when I don’t gouge it if I follow the steps you tell me to there’s still white marks on the piece. Any idea how I can get those to go away?
>>
>>16596489
Oh, don't worry about white pieces on the Hyaku Shiki - the plastic is plated so you won't be able to see any stress marks.
>>
>>16596491
No idea what that means but sweet. thanks anon sounds good
>>
>>16596473

god fucking damnit , couldnt bandai begin to edit english text in their building manual a few months sooner? i´m halfway done with this space-faggot knight , and NOW i realize there was a different rod that eluded my sight for the whole time i was messing around the runners and decals .
So its time to unassamble the whole thing and pray that it wont explode while doing so.
Cause this thing has cringe worthy tolerances, i just popped into place the feet/ankle assembly and i can already see a white line of stressed plastic in the peg that holds it together....

I´m never buying any other bandai valkyrie EVER
>>
Okay so I've got a complete kit that I haven't used decals on yet. What are my options now aside from painting? Could I put on the decals and find a spray style metallic topcoat (assuming that exists)? Anything else I could do?
>>

There is no metallic top coat, the closest is a gloss coat and that will make your mech look like wet plastic more than anything.

>literal fuck ton of polycaps
>skeletal (very exposed joints, tiny upperarms to contrast xbox hueg legs, etc)
>the entire waist kneeling thing being finicky
>legs are completely straight almost, lacking the flair
>knee parts don't protude as far
>skirt is too far off from the legs for articulation reasons
>forearms too small
>head too risen
>waist/lower chest area too tall/risen
>hatch too big/protruding
>antenna tooclose
>backpack too small
>hands jut out from wrists too much

I could go on, but the point is there are issues with this kit and the guy saying they're the same is stupid.

When you get hit with a decal shotgun point blank.
>>
>>16596717
Go edge. If all else fails, go edge. Make all the white a matte black and make the blue clear red with a marble effect.
>>
>>16596719
No. I just did it because I wanted it to look "ver ka." I still over did it, but not by that much. The biggest problem is the F91 is tiny so it would probably have less decals than the average ver ka.

>>16596722
How do you change the blue parts to a clear red? I don't really plan on the color scheme but I had no idea that was possible. Did you mean candy coated?
>>
>>16596712
i like putting a lotta decals too, but even that seems a little too much to me
>>
Is it better to assemble arms, legs, chest, etc. separate after you paint them - then clear/topcoat - or do that separated then assemble it when the pieces are 100% done?

I feel like I get better coverage when I do it when its 100% disassembled but then I sometimes will scratch the paint and you're fucked on correcting scratches after the clear coat.

I replaced the white paint with silver and the gray with gunmetal. Works a lot better.
>>
>>16596732
Oh, yeah you meant candy. I thought you meant clear red, like literally make the part clear red somehow.

I've never tried candy coating, I plant o try it on my gerbera tetra eventually though, since it looks like a race car.
>>
>>16596729
this one doesnt look bad, i think its just the f91's problem
>>
>>16596732
Are you the guy that did that PG exia shield? The green marbled parts were insanely good.
>>
>>16596736
Thanks. This was also the kit that changed me over to ONLY using bandai/DL waterslides. Too many shitty ones from china really stand out/ruin kits.
>>
>>16596736
Different anon but I think the reason the F91 looked much worse was because the decals were slapped on at almost random spots.
>>
>>16596743
yea i've used those chinese ones before and i definitely stick to bandai/hiqparts now

now that you mention it, i think thats the reason too

Is hiq or DL better?

correct me if im wrong, but hiq just does general stuff like caution marks, lines, camo, etc., while hiq does full sets for kits

Why does HLJ split my order up into 2 shipping sections? All of the items say in stock, but only 1 item is in the "ready to ship" section?

Am I supposed to say private warehouse so they all ship at once?

Yes. It may add a couple of days to the order but grouping all your shipping together is a lot easier on your wallet.

Only other one I was decal crazy on that hasn't been posted yet. The weathering was supposed to look like its been in deep space for a while.
>>
Going to post a few builds that I took "halfway" decent pics of just now.

Efreet kai 1/100 painted as efreet nacht
>>
Guncannon detector 1/100, painted in titans scheme.
>>
GM command 1/100, painted to add some more color separation.
>>
Dom origin 1/144 painted as a zaku II

I hate the beam bazooka, its too big, taller than the entire kit I think, it makes it a bitch to pose, but it looks boring without it
>>
GNX striker, 1/144, painted in nu-char's colors. Cool build but the articulation is terrible, and again I don't really like the oversized gun
>>
Zaku half-cannon origin, 1/144, custom paint scheme. I really, really like this kit along with my efreet kai I did. I think this was my best build in a while between execution and idealization of the design. It has 2 grey stripes on the shield.
>>
>>16596991
a bit of the shield, this angle also shows off a few more decals
>>
Finally, muh bael, 1/100. This kit is one of the worst I've ever had, in regards to posing it. It's super back-heavy, the legs are wobbly, and the feet aren't very grounding.

I also feel like the kit itself doesn't represent how the bael looked in the anime because the wings just always feel off.
>>
these are nice builds, but you shoulda waited for the new thread anon

Last pic

I'm currently on summer break and won't be able to do anything for a while, so I'm prepping a PG exia to be painted. Sorry to image spam so much, I just wanted to share what I've worked on in half-decent lighting. One day I'll learn how to really take good photos.
>>
>>16596988
That one is really nice. What red did you use?
>>
>>16597003
Oops, I'll just link to these in the next thread. Thanks for the tip.
>>
>>16597012
I mix most/all of my own colors, so I'm not really sure.

The lighter red is tamiya flat red + a very small amount of black.

The darker red is tamiya is flat red + a bit more of black and a tiny bit of brown.
>>
>>16596361
Disagree with this man. He is wrong and just doesn't even feel bad about it.
>>
>>16596712
That's a cool "thing" to have. I've been wrecking my brain about what to do with my HG fenice and this might be cool
>>
>>16596983
I love this Command. The extra black and gray areas make it look like a real trooper.

>>16596984
I gave my QT Dom an old 105mm machine gun left over from the sniper Zaku I. The old and slightly unfamiliar design fits with the prototype theme.
>>
>>16597062
It's actually a very dark brown, a dark grey, and a light grey, but thanks. I think it really makes it stand out as the commander.

I might recycle a gun for the dom, that is a good idea.
>>
If I don't plan to top coat or mark setter/softener would it be better to stick to in the kit decals or waterslides for let's say RG Mk. II titans?
>>
>>16597074
Just use the kit decals. Waterslides are super weak without any sort of extra adhesive.
>>
>>16597079
Thank you for the quick and to the point answer, anon.
>>
>>16597074
Waterslides. The they dont stick meme is made by incompetent faggots.
I have water slides on my keyboard that I cant get off.

The only thing is, make sure they are properly wet (with water) and that you aren't touching them while they are drying. If you're impatient use a blow dryer on low setting. Once that shit is dry, it's not going anywhere.

Stickers look like shit, and peel off all the time unless they are in a perfectly flat surface and you never touch the kit.

They do.

The new meme is that MG's are shit... it's simple as that.
>>
>>16597231
depends on which RG and MG.
The Sinanju RG is gonna be trouble so go for the MG unless you want the challenge.
The RG Strike Freedom is okay but the MG doesn't seem too bad.

Yes, that is the plan. I'll start working on the new thread after I eat since my raging headache has subsided.
>>
>>16597162
Rub one are a pain. You have to tape it down, sometimes you dont know if its fully transferred and if it moves at all, its fucked. For snapfags it's no problem but it will mess up your paint job. But once it's on, it's not going anywhere.

Another bonus of waterslides is while its wet you can move it around a bit, to get it in the right spot.

>>
>>16597222
going by the kits people post here i'd say most ppl come up with at least a minor deviation of a kits color scheme if not totally doing their own thing with it
>>
>>16597222
i usually just matte coat if its going to stay the same color. it gives it the painted look so it doesn't clash against painted pieces when assembled

how are the hguc revives? are they any good?
>mg gyan never
>>
>>16597618
I only have the Grandpa Gundam, Guncannon, and the MkII but they're all pretty good kits all around. Though the 78-2 is probably the most underwhelming one there's not a whole lot of detail on it but it's still a good kit.
>>
>>16597618
The Revives are all pretty solid, much much better than their older counterparts. The Gyan is super great too. Also there is actually a MG Gyan, the beam saber has an LED in it too, it's pretty neat.

Now this is clean assembly I appreciate.
You snapfit OOB or did some sanding and lining before fitting it altogether?
I'm still looking through the guides on here for more info, planning on doing some basic fit-togethers for my backlog before disassembling for customizing.
>>
>>16597995
Thank you bud. All honesty, I just use an xacto blade to shave down nubs, and in my experience its worked really well. I really only save sanding for custom projects. And yeah, I assembled the limbs first, then did some panel lining, in addition with using some leftover silver sticker material from one of my GM/GM's I built to put behind the visor to give it more of a shine, which turned out fairly well imo.
