What is with all the hate? This is unironically good.
>>
It's not any better or worse than tons of other 80s OVAs but a combination of the head of Central Park Media trying to turn it into something way bigger than it really is, the lack of alternatives/references at the time and the impression that it left on many of the early 2000 "me and my best bud Akanehime-chan-sama-rama-sensei needed to watch multiple episodes of Azumanga Daioh and Cardcaptor Sakura to wash away the MD Geist's bad taste #>_<,," internet amateur reviewers resulted in its reputation.
>>
>>16597104
>hate
Most people praise it here when it's actually utter garbage like many other OVAs.

>Plot fags
>Regular fags who hate anything gritty and visceral and praise things just for being the opposite of that
>People who watch anime to find replacements for a lack of irl friends
>Pseudo Intellectuals

In the early 2000s those groups of people started dominating the North American fandom, so if an anime was not able to appeal to any one of those groups then it was considered objectively awful. Even Genocyber, with its incredibly creative art design, dynamic emotional content, poignant themes of human self destruction and the fusion of technology and mysticism, and pretty good animation, was considered as one of the worst anime ever by these people because it was gory and had austere characterization.

I'm quite glad that the current fandom is less decentralized now because there is way more room for those old consensus's to be overturned.
>>
>>16597389
Meant to say "more decentralized" not less.

Kinda funny they advertise that chick, i forget her name, as a sidekick. When in the sequel she's so terrified of Geist she pisses her self and has a mental break down.
>>

Paia.

To be fair, the sequel would never be for another 10 years from when that illustration is from.

Its not that bad. And Geist himself is a pretty interesting villain protagonist. And by that I mean villain with a capital V. Its weird to see something that is fun to watch and compelling enough to carry itself forward while also have a massively unlikable protagonist with zero redeeming features.

I think the sequel tried way too hard though and ended up fumbling some of the plot that it tried to add on when in reality it would have benefited from not being so ambitious and taking a more simplified and relaxed tone like the first in that respect.

I'd have liked it if the sequel retained a bit of consistent focus on the FITEX armour from the original written treatment from 10 years earlier, in which the armour is more of an elite tool that then found its way into the hands of soldiers as the war destroyed the army's infrastructure, and subsequentially more focus on Geist versus Krauser. Granted, the original OVA doesn't dive into much detail about the armour, I'm citing all this from the wider published materials from the time.

90s faggots weren't right either. They acted like moralfags for the entirety of their anime reviewing career.

M.D. Geist and Koichi Ohata in general is more fondly treated in Japan's schlock film circles.

>>
>>16597835
To be fair the first episode of Genocyber has some really nice animation and a very unique aesthetic that looks more like Eurocomics in some places than anime. Episodes 2 and 3 are straight irredeemable trash though.
>>
>>16597846
Great, unique mechanical designs and a jazzy 80’s soundtrack are its strong points. The story is a mess and the characters have the depth of a puddle on a hot day, though.
>>
>>16597104
Fags who can't accept different opinions and actually unironically believe their opinions and views on jap cartoons are objective fact and they have some holy duty to "correct" "ignorants" who disagree with them, as you can see in this thread

>What is with all the hate? This is unironically good.

Geez I hate it when people use the term "unironically". Just say that MD Geist is good, which is the truth. A good old honest to God ultraviolent ova. MD Geist, the most dangerous man alive.
>>
MD Geist represents the worst of 1980s OVAs.
>>

No you didn't. Don't like.
>>
>>16598674

Does any one-shot OVA have characters that are "deep" though?
>>
MD Geist is shit lmao
>>
M.D. Geist has a lot of vocal detractors for whatever reason still but it will never be for them.
>>
>>16599042
I can think of a couple, but even by OVA standards they're shallow. You get no insight into Geist, the protagonist's motivations whatsoever. At best you can infer he's probably insane. Female lead boils down to a) slut, and b) opportunist. Comparing to something like Cyber City Oedo 808, I felt like I got a clear idea of what motivated the protagonists over three episodes, all I get from Geist is "likes to kill things".
>>
>>16599054

Cyber City Oedo 808 gets the benefit of having three episodes to focus on three separate characters as well as a considerably bigger budget, tighter design control and more experienced staff overall. M.D. Geist is a B-tier label production helmed by first-timers in which the focus is definitely style over substance. I enjoy OVAs a lot, I can't really have time to complain about shallow characterisation when most don't have the run time for it, or creative enough writing to show it, I enjoy them for what they are most of the time.
>>

>>
The only "bad" thing about MD Geist (imo) is how choppy the animation can be, otherwise it's a load of fun and the soundtrack kicks ass. I love it!
>>
>>16599748

The animation errors themselves aren't uncommon for most anime of the time, however their frequency is slightly higher. I prefer the rawer quality of the original over the horrible digital edits in the director's cut.

There is nothing about being a B-Tier 80s action flick animated in Japan entails it being bad though. A description of what type of movie it is has nothing to do with its actual quality - how good is it at being a B-Tier 80s action flick? That is what you need to consider when evaluating it objectively.
>>

"B-Tier" is just a budgetary constraint, and how those movies were able to break from conventional movie standards because there was less financial investment put into them and thus less risk in not being popular. All other connotations are just the result of the chauvinism of Hollywood and Art House scenes.

But MD Geist isn't a bad OVA. It's certainly not THE WORST ANIME EVER. So how did this come about?

Back in the day people did read reviews and word of mouth was especially important back when you couldn't just hop on a site and torrent anime. Con circuits, etc were more important as well.
>>
>>16599054
We're told what he is. He's a psycho soldier so dangerous they had to lock him up in a satellite prison. From this we can infer he's not a nice person and the initial scene of him enjoying the wonton slaughter of everything before him shows he loves combat. Geist isn't a deep character, no, but we see what he likes. It's reinforced through the songs, the visuals, the way he acts, he's a madman who likes to kill and acts accordingly.
>>
>>16601107

Not really a fedora statement though, go to Bennett for that.

Yes, that's when it started and this myth of it being 'THE WORST ANIME EVER' began in the 1990s and continues to this day.

An OVA only has a limited time with which to not only build up the world and its setting, but the characters, their backstories, motivations, etc. It's quite a tricky thing to do and visuals, music, etc play a huge role in that. There's a reason why so many OVAs were set in weird futuristic/fantasy societies and such. Not only because of the genre appeal but also because you can use the visuals as shorthand. Take Legaciam; weird future society, werid clothes, a few references to a ruling council and 1st, 2nd, 3rd class ctitizens, etc and you've got what seems to be a lot of depth to your world. It's surface deep and if you scratch it, there's nothing underneath it, but it works for the purposes of the OVA.

MD Geist manages to establish this quite well. It establishes Jerra as a war torn hell hole with high technology that's smashed itself to pieces. It establishes the main characters; not deeply, but what they want and their general personality and motivations; Geist wants to fight, Vaiya wants to survive and be with the strongest, using everything she can to do so and Krutes has a mission that's so important to complete he's willing to bring Geist along instead of killing him, which shows his desperation and discipline. This isn't saying Geist is deep, because it's not. Again, these are simple characters without much to them, but they're reinforced by the visuals and such so you don't question it and get a sense of depth.

All of this is in service to an end. With OVASs sometimes it's to make a pilot and give a sense of the world, the characters and the general feel of what a larger series would be like. Sometimes it's to act as a vehicle for animation or a particular type of story. Geist falls into the latter creatively. MD Geist falls into the latter; it's style over substance, but it does the job of establishing the premise and characters well.

Althea is an odd case because it's objectively better than Geist in many ways. It's much better in its worldbuilding and building up the characters (even if I found them all to be uninteresting and bad, but that's subjective), and it has a coherent, decent plot that is successfully told. The technical design was good, about equal to Geist, and the animation was a bit more consistent. But the pacing was bad, the visuals were dark (a BD rip may improve this, but still) and it focused to heavily on the world building, characters etc due to its nature as an attempt to drive up interest in a full tv anime production rather than work as a stand alone piece.

Geist on the other hand goes in the opposite direction. The pacing is fast, perhaps too fast at times, there isn't enough work on the plot, the characters, the setting. The animation can be janky at times but it's perfectly decent enough. However, the quick pacing draws you in, even if it can lead some people to be a bit lost. The visuals are colourful, striking and bombastic. It's over the top and aside from a few breaks here and there, it doesn't really stop with the action. It's a better OVA than Althea even if Althea works better as a work of fiction.

Now, both mark basically two extremes (speaking very loosely) of OVA design and the flawed approaches they took. Personally, for an OVA that gets the balance much better than either, Dragon's Heaven stands in the middle with the good worldbuilding and characterisation to get you through the action and premise, and enough action and impressive visuals to show off. Add in a distinct visual style and soundtrack and it really shines as an example of what an OVA should be.

By "bad" I meant unlikeable and I found it hard to invest in them. Sorry for that.

This thread is a mess. This debate is pretty dumb since this is a subjective topic. You're not going to convince anyone here. Can't /m/ appreciate differing opinions instead of starting silly arguments.

Aside from the insistent trolls it's an alright thread, it has relevant content posted and people have been able to talk properly about what they like.

Reposting some translated text from the M.D. Geist Perfect File publication from 1986.

"5843 years after the end of the Christian Era, a completely new hero is born. Ruthless, cruel, ferocious. A beast with a golden mane who embodies all of these attributes, this is Geist! A shadow flickers amongst the smouldering destruction. A launcher gun in one hand and a slight smile at the edge of his lip. His name is M.D. Geist. Former Regular Army Special Forces Commander with extraordinary destructive ability thanks to Bioclone science. The most dangerous man there is, is here!

Everywhere he goes is destroyed without a trace. A bazooka in his right hand and a spear in his left. The smell of death is always around him, the mysteriously burning blue eyes have a sharp and malignant shine. A man with a destructive ability comparable to that of an army alone, the Most Dangerous Soldier, Geist. With the burning smell of smoke lingering from his hair, Geist returns to the ground to transform the picture into a hell-scape, what you see is M.D. Geist!"

"“The most dangerous man”, Geist. There is little information regarding his early life and personal background. Based on what information is available, we intend to unravel the mystery behind Geist.

Birth:
His name ‘Geist’ is a word that is German in origin. The word is derived from “poltergeist”, which means ‘noisy spirit’, and it may be familiar from contemporary stories and such. His facial characteristics are closer to being that of German rather than Anglo-Saxon, it can be concluded that if at least one of Geist’s parents was German, he would have inherited their blood strongly.

Biography (Childhood to Adolescence):
No one knows about the boyhood of Geist. Therefore, the following is mere speculation, but in light of his later actions, there may be some truth to these elements after all. Geist’s father was a soldier and was therefore considerably close to the military. As a result of this, Geist’s strategic knowledge and judgement in battle was cultivated, not just through personal effort, but by the education placed on him by his father to create an excellent soldier in the future. In addition, it would seem that a hard regime of strength training was enforced to demonstrate and push the physical functions of the whole body to the limit. His legs are faster than anyone else’s, his arms can lift weights many times their own, his reflexes are on a par with that of a wild beast’s, and his sharp senses of vision, smell and hearing are all owed to his training as a boy. Even with the application of Bioclone science putting his fighting power on par with that of an army, this intense training from an early age cannot be understated. Naturally, scientific training menus were provided in order to better eliminate any chances of obstructing his physical muscle growth (such as common sports injuries)."

"Biography (Regular Army enlistment):
Upon completing compulsory education, Geist did not hesitate in the following in the footsteps of a soldier. Alongside other young recruits who had prospects of becoming the backbone of the army, Geist entered military academy. He graduated with outstanding scores and results. However, an incident during military academy would change his life. Though, some people claimed it was an accident. Altogether, there are many discrepancies regarding this incident (or whether it was an accident). Both colleagues and superiors keep their mouths shut regarding the details. According to an unverified report, many colleagues who were jealous of Geist’s excellent track record were killed during a training exercise with live ammunition. Even though Geist suffered for his gross negligence, he had discovered a pleasure not known to him prior to the slaughter…

The credibility of this information is questionable. However, this legend that thunders around him simultaneously bears some truth. The truth is as if it were as phantasmal as an illusion. Thus, the former elite who desired to lead the most ruthless and bloody special forces unit had defiled himself…"
