Watch out, it's not just a minute, not an hour...

It's a new release of SRW GR: The Day Archanea Stood Still, featuring ~7 new stages for your enjoyment now that we're entering the hibernation period for the SRW series

As usual you can find it here.
https://ontlogy.wordpress.com/srw-gr/

Sorry I took so long... I mean, if anyone was looking forward to this being complete. There's a combination of lifestyle events and quasi-perfectionism that kinda lead to this project looking like it's going to take as long as the actual Giant Robo OVA but that's what you get when you're a 1-man hobo team. At least we're around 2/3 of the way through now so unless I get hit by a truck you'll probably get to see the end of this eventually.

Hope you guys enjoy the fruits of my autism efforts and see you in 2 years time... probably.

For hopefully obvious reasons I don't think I can tell you directly, all I'll say is that maybe you should search. There are still places to find it. You'd have to look for the translation patch yourself, though.

And be warned, J makes little effort most of the time to actually cross over the series in the roster. To the point at which even someone like me who can't write all that well can do a better job.

Starting J soon, Ive heard about how busted Mazinkaiser and Zeorymer are, but what other units are stronk?

I know it doesn't matter since the games easy as hell, but I want to know what the standout strengths of the roster are.
>>
>>16762578
>but what other units are stronk?

Nadesico
>>
>>16762578
If its a main character unit in J then its good (the MC of Nadesico is the ship just for your reference). Reals in J have a bit of a problem since the AI won't target them if you upgrade their mobility/evasion too much (not like it matters because the enemies will gravitate to Mazinkaiser/Zeorymer/Nadesico/Granteed anyway).
>>

It's 'Super Robot' Wars as in the first two games there was no super/real distinction.

You can help make up for it with the good old 5/6 spirit pools but it is definitely more work to make it not a glass cannon compared to Mazinkaiser or Granteed that you can just plop in the middle of 15 enemies without a care.

>>

>>
>>16762830
>Real shame about some of my favorite suits being kinda crap though like the Re-Gz and the Hyaku Shiki
You should basically expect any unit that isn't a Main Character to suck in any given SRW game only mitigated by the fact that SRW is generally easy so it doesn't matter.

>Fub is a beam coat
Most FUBs in the series are honestly pretty bad for their cost - I think this is just one of the cases where it's obvious so you don't end up wasting money so that might actually be an advantage over being an outright trap.
>>
>>16761923
Japanese naming order is indeed surname then given name, unless it contains foreign words. (From marriage, etc.) The OG characters actually use western naming order only when their names are presented in katakana; if they're written in kanji, they're done in Japanese order. It's probably translation convention at work, that since the EFA is an international-interspatial military all of its soldiers are speaking in English and the text is just presented to us in Japanese.
>>
>>16762908
>You should basically expect any unit that isn't a Main Character to suck in any given SRW game
Well AP in particular does have a lot of instances to the contrary, such as all of the Shuffle Alliance guys (and Master Asia) being goddamn fantastic, Quattro in general, Dragonar-3 being hands down the most useful of its cast, Trowa blowing Heero out of the water, Akito being generally meh tier unless you turn him into a Daimajin wrecker, and Norris being arguably a better pilot and almost undeniably coming in a better unit than Shiro
>>
>>16761923
EFA is an international organization so western order is probably preferred
>>
>>16763022
Ok, guess I'll append "Gundam non-Main" to that statement then.
>>
>>16762776
He's talking about J, fool.

It's not really a great idea (nothing's gonna save Layzner if he's hit) but it's not a terrible one either.
>>
>>16763167
I know he's talking about J, but why waste money on doing that?

It's not going to make a significant difference since your Supers aren't going to be dodging even if you upgrade their Mobility due to Size Differences/Poor Pilot Evasion stat nor would they need to anyway.

Maybe you can argue it would allow a Real to take an additional hit but why not just make it untouchable? You might as well just pump weapons so you can get the game finished quicker or heck, actively utilize those AI quirks anyway (like upgrading a Real to the point of never being hit and then just going full-bore on its offenses since it isn't going to get targeted on Enemy Phrase)
>>
>>16763177
>since your Supers aren't going to be dodging even if you upgrade their Mobility due to Size Differences/Poor Pilot Evasion stat
If you've played J, it must have been 10+ years since you've played it
>>
>>16762730
Huh? No, no, no. Only buff a super's evasion if for some crazy reason you want it NOT to be targeted. You still want armour and health so that they can laugh off the attacks they'll get. Your reals are simply never going to be targeted and you have to accept that, but you don't want them to die to counterattacks so you still need evasion as usual.
>>
>>16762837
>Hyaku Shiki just gets fucked after Alpha and Alpha Gaiden.
Hyaku Shiki has literally never been good.
>>
>>16763177
Non main is too broad of a context especially since most rival characters tend to be pretty good in SRW. Not to mention shitwreckers like Soldat J who isn't a main character but can damn well give most of them a run for their money in every appearance.

>>
>>16763375
Hyaku Shiki itself, pretty much, yea. It's almost always an early game filler unit that gets painfully outdated when you start getting actual main character units.
Alpha at least upgrades it to the Kai, which loses the Clay Bazooka for some better numbers and a few attacks it doesn't need, and then to the Full Armor, which is alright enough to field in the endgame if you're fetishistically obsessed with the Hyaku Shiki because its finisher is somehow better than the F91's VSBRs except for having one less point in range.

I am sure the next OG will be full of nice stuff, if they continue releasing standalone titles every years with a SEA release it will be ok. A new series would also be great, especially now that the BB team is improving with the animations
>>
>>16763687
I wonder which character this is

>>16763871

>>
>>16763177
>but why not just make it untouchable?

Because then the pilot won't get many kills at all, meaning they'd get less EXP overall because of that exact AI quirk you mentioned. Most of anyone's given kills come from counterattacks during the enemy phase, after all. The ideal is to make them almost untouchable, so the AI will still try to attack them.
>>
>>16763913
Fair enough but I honestly don't think it matters much - this is SRW where there are extreme EXP bonuses for underlevelled units killing higher level ones and the PP system isn't in J where deprivation of kills means woefully underdeveloped skillsets.

Except for hitting specific level thresholds to gain key Spirits, there generally isn't much of an advantage to having higher levels in SRW given how you're never really more than 3-5 levels ahead even if you feed all your kills to a isngle unit.

I'm pretty sure Extella referenced Slash Emperor, so maybe they just finally remembered Notes was a thing. Plus that MHX is a Foreigner, which means it's probably some Great Old One's fault.

Side units aren't usually bad, they usually just don't get as broken as the protagonists
And even then that's ignoring guys like Holland or the side units from GaoGaiGar who are about as strong as any protagonist unit
>>
>>16764550
They're both mediocre compared to the other Protagonist suits. Wing and the G-Self Perfect Pack can essentially solo a stage with their MAPW, and the F-91 is probably the best sniper unit in the game with Haro Parts. Zeta and ZZ are just kind of there.
>>
>>16764507
Nah, Zeta's killing it right now in my AP run.
>>
>>16764612
I didn't get much use out of Zeta since there's just so many enemies that block beams and besides its finishers it doesn't really have any way to deal with that
I got more use out of Akito than Kamille
>>
>>16764607
ZZ has a free EN refill when you get FAZZ and purge the parts.
>>
>>16764507
That's false and I can name several games where Zeta and ZZ have been good to great relative to Hyaku Shitty.

>>16764622

AP is basically built around giving the player a hard time. Damage and accuracy are all over the damn place, units which you would expect to be broken turn out to be fairly useless, the enemies all eventually turn into huge damage sponges due to high dodge and hp bloat, bosses love retreating, etc. It's still not too hard but the extra challenge can either make or break it for most people.

Hmm, I guess it actually was allright in 3 since the game has no mobility stat it all came down to having a decent map attack, but its other weapons were always pretty poor. Its map attack was nerfed in later games, it's 100% pure grade shite by F Final, it's the type of unit thhat you should have gotten halfway though the previous game, which was a super low power level game where Hyaku Shiki would still have been underwhelming.

>is A Portable supposed to be especially difficult
By SRW standards, sort of, given that the enemy/player parity is pretty close early game where in most SRW games it's ridiculously in the favor of the player.

There are probably harder SRW games like some of the more ill-conceived Winky era ones and in the grand scheme of SRPGs, it's not really complex enough to be truly challenging.

>Im on stage fucking 2 and the enemies are gangraping me
Defend a lot, make sure you're under EWAC coverage at all times, go slow for the most part and use your spirits liberally but save a handful of units with Strike for high priority targets.

>Jack and the Getters start out at half health
I don't think that's supposed to be happening.

>>16765173
Hyaku Shiki is actually a really solid Tier-2 with a good niche in Z1 - it has 5 Ammo shots of a weaker ALL attack in the Beam Rifle, and can burst for a couple of attacks with its non-P TRI attack and Finisher (incidentally there's no point in getting EN Save because the cost is just too high for sustained fire)

It's kind of annoying how Char's pilot setup kinda pulls him in too many directions though - like if you're spamming ALLs you can't use his Squad Bonus (since it involves strengthening PLA attacks) and he's a pilot with Boost which is generally something you rather prefer on the spirit banks rather than the combatant.

Overall, there is no SRW game that is truly difficult.
Some SRW games can be pretty challenging at times though in the first playthrough. Usually if they have Masteries and when they have segments where you have access to specific mechs only, so you cannot rely on a couple ones you upgrade and use as a clutch.

In theory, SRW games should be about resource management against an army with superior numbers, but because you have access to resources 95% of the opponent cannot match (equipment, Spirits, battleships to fill you up)) and because you always have units with unique mechanics that spit on the universal mechanics, it's near impossible to make a good consistent challenge the moment you can use your whole army.
Like, Perfectio is supposed to be a grind against two armies, two midbosses and one of the biggest HP pools in SRW history against a fucker that can will drain you. But unless you completely fucked up playing the game and upgrading, you can make it to him with SP pool essentially intact and they he cannot fucking touch you.

>>
>>16765935
I don't think there's a formal one.

I definitely agree Nirvash is the top for Seven Swell abuse though, which is the quickest way to clear maps.

Generally speaking, anything with a Post-Move TRI or ALL that's either Ammo based or cheap is good for grunt sweeping and just about every Super is good for boss bashing.

There are certainly some that are more outstanding than others such as ReGZs having one of their best showings yet and Orguss amazing ability to spit out gross amounts of damage but the nature of Z being a Squad System game means a lot of things kinda meld together.
>>
>>16766082
The most ironic thing about Re-GZ is that it got a pretty huge downgrade when they gave it back its splitting gimmick in Z3
>>
>>16766059

It depends on how the developers handle the limitation aspect. You just have to be clever in limiting the ability of the player to win by grinding while keeping unit build diversity.

First two Langrissers, for example, do this nice, I think. Your EXP is capped since there are no optional battles or something like that but you still have some options in how you build characters, which troops you buy, there are "weapon triangles" and command fields in effect, you can choose to spend money on artifacts or troops etc.
>>
>>16766066

Tactics Ogre and FFT are more on a tedious side. You can always just grind your way to victory, and actually you're expected to, remembering some bullshit solo battles in FFT at least.
>>
>>16765899
>>16765937
>>16766066
Playing Fire Emblem normally and playing Fire Emblem for ranks is like night and day in difficulty. Much like trying to play its cousin Advance Wars for the highest ranks on each stage is naturally much harder than just trying to clear it normally.

FFT and TO are pretty overrated difficulty wise especially if the player has any remote idea how mechanics work or actually try to use the customization system. Doesn't really take gaming the system to realize that Canopus, Archers and Magic are incredibly powerful (the remakes dicked around with the balance even more so than the original versions but the best units at the end of the day are as you'd expect) or in FFT's case that Agrias and Orlandeau can utterly break the game in half with a decent sword and that Lightning Stab move.

In any case, SRPGs that allow the player to grind freely by travelling around the world map are easier than the ones that don't/have a limited amount of free maps.

>>16766027
CoTP is a great game but I found it to be really tedious since the game kind of just expects you to set up maximum sin kills on pretty much every stage it ends up dragging on far longer than it has any right to.
>>
>>16765935
Aquarion is pretty good especially with element system. Orguss is your main machine on Rand's route thanks to Kei's natural skill stats and pilot abilities.

Gravion shows off its potential when it no longer has that 3 turn timer plus you have all the pilots to where you can spirit bank yourself to victory. More prominent with Sol Gravion really.

And as mentioned, Big O is really good and durable.

>>
>>16766514

To be fair the game doesn't really warn you about what you're getting yourself into until Wiegraf struts in and challenges you to a fight at which point you're very likely fucked going in blind.

Once you commit to the fight prior to the Wiegraf fight, you're stuck on that map node until you complete the whole thing, so if Ramza's fucked in job progression (granted, last I recall all you really have to do is move Ramza around and have him screech like he's going super saiyan and everything works out in the end or something) then you better have rotated your saves in anticipation of something like this happening.
>>
>>16766514
>>16766542
As long as you keep your saves ready, you literally can just go "lol get bent Mana Shield".

On top of that, he's hilariously easy to trick if you do know he's coming. Have a Chameleon Robe and either Feather Boots or Float? His AI fucks up and he won't be a danger. Or you could do like that one LP and set Ramza up in such a way that you punch him to death before he moves and then immediately follow it up by punching the demon before he can move and winning, which is hilarious, but you probably won't know to do that.

> last I recall all you really have to do is move Ramza around and have him screech like he's going super saiyan and everything works out in the end or something

>>
>>16766669
Actually, it's the opposite. All of the Gundam routes have all the secrets, but they're also irrelevant bullshit that doesn't have anything to do with the main story, while all of the Earth routes have no secrets but they're the much more interesting and better-written stages.

Odd that you would say that. You can dodge with Daitarn 3 with no upgrades at all in AP, not that you would need to given that Daitarn is the game's only tanky unit, mind you
>>
>>16767330
You tank in AP by using parry and shields. Daitarn itself's durability is pretty darn bad when it comes to bosses since Banjou doesn't learn any defensive spirits so he ends up turning into a suicide bomber or someone to start off the damage chain.

It absolutely does. Any endgame boss with enough Prevail will give him a damn hard time on their counter especially in a game like A Portable where you're probably not going to be upgrading anything but EN/Weapons on your first run. If you get a Shield Defense proc then he can take it but relying on rng just so that a boss won't kill him on a counter attack is bothersome.

Daitarn is like the only unit that actually needs Shield Defense. Everyone else that can use it shouldn't be getting hit to begin with. At Lv 9 Shield Defense, it has at the very least around a 56% chance to shield when getting hit. And that's if the hit doesn't get parried first. Yeah, it probably does need some armor upgrades to make this sustainable, but it won't die in one hit either way. AP is RNG: the game. The sooner as you accept that you're going to have to savescum a shitload, the more reasonable expectations you'll have.
>>
>>16767656
Daitarn having to rely on Shield Defense to take a hit from bosses is just simply unreliable compared to casting Alert/Fortitude/Guard etc no matter how high the percentage can be after enough Shield Defense parts. Going oh its just RNG the game is a poor way of defending this.

Additionally, Vysaga absolutely wants at least 1 level of Shield Defense even with Bunshin because enemy density for a large portion of AP isn't very high and you often need to get several units up to their finishers meaning that it won't always have Bunshin active especially in the early game. No to mention that there isn't even enough Shield Defense parts per run to get Shield Defense 9 on Daitarn (there's only like 5 or so at most)
>>
>>16766600
Most people are too busy killing everyone via math lessons. A damn shame since it means you miss out on all the fun some of the other builds bring.
>>
>>16767695
It doesn't have to rely on it. You won't die in one hit, period. Besides, by your logic, you may as well say that any unit that has to rely on mobility is garbage. That's all RNG too.

And here you are acting like Double Image is reliable when that is once again RNG. Make up your mind, pal. 1 level of Shield Defense isn't worth shit, gives you like a 6% activation chance. Unless you're talking about using it by defending on enemy phase, which actually isn't RNG, making your whole argument moot. Anyway, there are 7 Shield defense parts per playthrough, which is just about the point where it starts being consistent. Banjo is candidate #1 for dumping all your skill stat parts into anyway, since his whole gimmick is critical hits on Valor and Soul. Skill stat helps with not only that, but also his Parry and Shield activation.
With these investments, his defenses are by default almost twice as reliable as using the Focus spirit for the evasion buff with no SP cost at all.
You following here? We're talking
Lv 9 Parry plus skill stat = ~ 60% chance Daitarn takes no damage from everything that isn't a beam, bullet or combo attack
Lv 7 Shield Defense + skill stat = ~45% chance he takes only 60% of the damage of anything that gets past the above
Above damage is reduced further regardless because of damage penalties vast majority of enemies incur against LL size units

Denying the potential of this is ridiculous
>>
>>16767763
>You won't die in one hit, period.
I didn't know that Lemon suddenly stopped existing in the game. I'm also quite certain that quite a few of the other bosses during the course of the game can give Banjou a tough time.

>You may as well say that any unit that has to rely on mobility is garbage.
You mean all those units that almost all have Alert/Fortitude to cast against a boss? Most grunts in AP are just as inaccurate as you are and aren't nearly as strong as a boss.

>here you are acting like Double Image is reliable when that is once again RNG
I never said that Double Image alone was reliable. Follow along, this is why I even suggested that Axel/Lamia should get the single level in Shield Defense to get access to their shield to help with enemy phase durability in response to your claim that Banjou is the only unit in the game that would want Shield Defense. He definitely does deserve the lion's share of them since otherwise he's at risk of taking a nasty counter attack from beams/bullets/combos/certain special boss weapons but Vysaga getting access to its shield for manually defending can be useful at times.

>Denying the potential of this is ridiculous
Its definitely powerful no denying that, but why are you acting as if that's anywhere close to simply just casting Fortitude/Guard/Alert?

Not gonna lie, I actually like SRW's gameplay menu system where everything can be done just by a push of a button. Every scene can be skipped, there's a lot of fast forward options for the players, offensive spirit commands can be used all in one go, etc. Like there's a lot less menu-ing to deal with, so to say. Like I just press square on a character and voila, I'm already at the spirit command list. Or if I hold R1 + moving the character to a square I want them to go, and they're already there. Hell, V and X have systems that allow you to skip the off animations just by pressing X.

Going through BX, did all the secret requirements on Akurasu, but somehow I'm not getting Dragon Baby. Is there something incorrect with the reqs on Akurasu? It looks like a couple other people have had an issue unlocking him.
Also, if I do NG+, do my unlocked secrets carry over or do I have to feed kills to shitty AGE units again?
>>
>>16772561
> Is there something incorrect with the reqs on Akurasu?

Just checked the JP wikis and the Akurasu requirements ARE correct. Did you forget to set Knight Alex as the Tactician in those two missions, or, perhaps, did you beat the Zenon Mantha without the Full Armor Knight Gundam attack?

Mind you, the wiki does come with a warning: 初戦闘時の会話が優先されるので先に1度戦っておく
That is, in mission 33 the Vassal Knight Gundam's generic pre-battle convo takes priority over his actual convo with Neo Black Dragon. As such, you need to have them fight twice if you don't trigger that convo against other stuff.
>>
>>16772584
Yep, there it is. I don't usually let the solo units fight unless they have to, because I want to let a pair unit share the exp instead.
So do secrets carry over into NG+?

No, but you can get everyone in one run due to some creative flag usage and kill counts are based on what’s on the screen instead of per-run stuff.

So what's the story with Sänger and Dr. Nate exactly?
>>
>>16772896
Back in Alpha Gaiden he was protecting the Earth Cradle because he had a crush on her back in the day. He's still got a crush on her after the bad future is averted, but he runs off with Ratsel at the end anyway.

In OG they met like once and then he had to ride Ratsel around.

Let's be honest. Classic SRWs (not OG) is now a showcase for the Tamashii brand. So it could become a trend to have yearly standalone titles with the same graphical engine and a plot that is constrained by the cast list, while every 3-4 years we get an OG.
That said, I would really like to have a new standalone developed by TOSE in which the series are chosen based on the story, the last one being MX 14 years ago!

BTW, OG announcement when???

M8, Bamco literally gave them their own (admittedly very good) Damashii build fighters game, Robot Damashii is owned by Bandai so this has pretty much always been the case.

Now, if only they did make a second BRD game with a roster just as incredible...

I meant that before 2010 they chose the series basing on the story they wanted to tell. After Banpresto was inglobled by BN and they formed the B.B Studio, they started to choose the series and then build a story around it (you just see the N-Nautilus SOC announced after X was announced, or F91 included just to sell the MB). I mean, there is nothing wrong, they are a company, but this could affect the quality of the story.
However, V story was not too bad, I have to admit. Still at stage 23 of X, though.

I am fairly certain the only SRW game which you can argue did not choose series for the purpose of making oodles of $$$ off merchandising is Compact 3.
