*READ THE GUIDE*

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data from images when they're uploaded to the website from your phone, including the orientation display tag. To solve this, save your images out separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the image itself for you.
One commonly used app that works well on Android:

IGBX: Immortal Group Build

Build a mecha focused around vehicular racing for a high-speed race across the galaxy!

>What constitutes a racing mecha?
A mobile suit with a focus on speed/agility, with or without some sort of waverider/MA mode. This doesn't mean bulky mechs aren't eligible, it just needs to retain a sense of speed to it. All racing components must be incorporated within the mobile suit itself, and not be an entirely separate entity (IE, you can't make a mobile suit and a motorcycle, but you can make a mobile suit with parts that turns it into a motorcycle OR a mobile suit that has armorparts that turns a motorcycle)
>Is weaponry/vehicular combat allowed?
Yes, but ideally you should probably stick to hard-mounted weaponry instead of handheld weapons (Not that you can't include handheld ones, it's your build). The lighter the better in this case.
>I can't come up with an idea for this theme, what's some good inspiration?
IGPX, Eureka Seven, Redline, WipeOut, and F-Zero are good starting points for futuristic racing machines. If you have a favorite race car livery then that can work as a starting point as well.

Just burned through two MGs in a month or so, I still have a few more that I could do but I feel kinda burnt out from MGs.
Realized I have a small HG backlog that I haven't touched in a long as while.
I don't know what I should build next and I'm not exactly picky so I'll leave my fate up to you guys. I'll stop counting votes by 11/11/

The issue with this is it's difficult to electroplate straight onto polystyrene plastic. Usually it's one metal plated onto another. And it can get expensive.

seed isn't that great, but I do like the Gundam designs from it. The Japs love seed though so maybe I'm just a dumb westerner. the kit you got is from build divers, but it's based on the 00 Gundam from 00, which is a good series IMO and has a lot of great designs. I also recommend watching the original Mobile Suit Gundam even though it has really dated animation; it's the starting point for the entire UC timeline and spawned a lot of tropes in other shows (Gundam and non-Gundam)

>>
>>16980961
Real Grade? Is its arm joint as frail as reported or was that an exaggeration?
>>
>>16980701
You'd need electrically conductive primer, which you could potentially make yourself using ultra-fine graphite powder and pigment-less paint medium.
Those factory plated gunpla kits and Transformers use vacuum metallization, which is a process you can't really do at home.
>>
So /m/ what should I build next: Jesta, Zudah, or Gouf Custom?
>>
>>16981005
Everything about it seems sturdy to me. The arm joint doesn't seem that bad, it's pretty much the same structure as the MG where the shoulders can move forward substantially but not as far backwards - I think that's where some people were going wrong and trying to force it back.
I can pick the thing up by the arm and articulate everything really well, especially considering how bulky it is.

It's not about people forcing it which breaks it. It's the fact that the tension breaks the hollow peg itself from the plastic quality being complete shit if you move it around too much.
>>
>>16981102
>It's the fact that the tension breaks the hollow peg
Not if you assemble it properly, ya wank. The manual says to push the male part all the way through, all the breaks so far are people not pushing it all the way through and causing excess tension.

So what makes the Ma. K pilot figures so expensive?

Sloppy.
>>
>>16980310
Man a good time to ask, are the Hasegawa Ma.K kits any good? They resin or standard model kits?
>>
>>16981160
If you built any aircraft kits then you'll have a good time. they're plastic, nicely detailed but harder to build than gunpla as you'll need glue and a drill in some cases and there are seamlines abound so get good at sanding and filling.

They're much more challenging than gunpla but well worth the price.
>>
>>16981120
Yeah no shit you're supposed to push it all the way down, but you do realize that at the same time pushing the parts down actually creates more tension and friction when you move them later right? There's a reason why people use either graphite dust or silicon lubricant on some kits without polycaps to reduce the friction and tension so it doesn't twist or break the peg right off.

Then there's retards who use WD40 or machine oil and wonder why their limbs easily snap off later.

I'd ask the Macross thread instead, they have a pretty knowledgable base on the kits. From what I gathered: the plane, non transforming, kits are pretty decent.
>>
>>16982074
>>16982099
Yeah I tried not having a backlog, but then I got into the habit of buying kits I want when I find them for good prices after getting tired of dealing with the price fluctuations you get between print runs and waiting for new runs. And then I fell way behind after moving to a new apartment and starting a new job.
Problem is living in Japan means finding kits for a "good price" is super easy, so a backlog of one or two kits quickly became like 10. Then the whole time I wasn't building kits I was still buying kits, and the new town I moved to has a lot of hobby shops, and now my backlog is well over 30.

>>16982187
I think I kind of learned how to preshade darker colors with this kit. I previously had been doing:

>black on edges
>spray thin on outside (black because of preshading)
>spray thicker on middle (grey because of primer)

When in reality you should just do a light coat and let the grey "show through" more rather than trying to up the saturation versus the black.
>>
>>16982189
Man, you guys are so amazing. Hope I can be as good as you, Grimzock, and that one guy with super hero custom build, some day.

Speaking of, do you use pla-plates? I've found an interesting channel that makes amazing builds using those awful 80s kits and it blows me away. Wish he had a slower tutorials, he only made (as far as I am aware) two very brief tutorials that are missing alot of information to help making joints the way he does.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIx55N8aFkE
>>
>>16982229
I have not used pla-plating nor scribed. I want to do both, but I have an ENORMOUS backlog and I'm working towards thinning out a few kits while perfecting my foundation techniques.

I would start with plaplate by just adding extra surface detail, since that is relatively easy and hard to fuck up if you measure properly.

My biggest piece of advice for painting is if you are experiencing ANY issues while painting, make sure your paint is properly thinned (not too thinned either), and 99.99% of the time if you completely clean your airbrush, it will fix the problem.

Bandai doesn't reprint every model kit every month. Some kits may be months or years between reprints. 16 kits in my backlog right now (6 HGs, 4 MGs, other mecha kits). I have four more that are reserved arriving at the end of the month, three in December, three in January, one in February, two in March, one in April...
I have three kits in queue for painting, which is on hold until I have time to make the drive to restock. With luck, I'll be able to knock out at least two of them during my vacation at the end of the month. I have one kit being built as time is available right now. I really need to find a new job that lets me have more free time.

Since we're asking question still, the guide mentions that the compressor+airbrush+other stuff is outdated and you should ask the thread. I've noticed someone already post the compressor, but is there a better airbrush suggestion nowadays than the guide, or is the guide one still good enough? What airbrush does everyone here use?

Is there a good way to keep up with airbrushes and tools related to them?
>>
>>16982580
I bought some of those LED's in a large box made by those guys, or similar.

Prepare for really REALLY shitty on/off switches that don't really always work or just non working bulbs, but you get like 20 in a pack.

>>
>>16982701
Is the person a girl or a gay?
Either way use their pedicure supplies. Nippers, files, buffers, nail polish, all work on gunpla. You can even use nail polish remover as cement if it's acetone.
>>
>>16982707

Wait a second, nail remover would work as filling solution? Im sorry, I never used cement so have no idea about its purpose. Overall, wouldn't acetone cause discoloration?
>>
>>16982711
Nah it can't work as a filler unless you dissolve some plastic in it first. It's equivalent to Tamiya Extra Thin Cement which you use by dripping it across a hairline-seam. This melts the edges and fuses them together.

Yes it causes discoloration, so does cement, they dissolve the plastic.
>>
>>16982714

Oh. So it does require paint, probably brush paint afterwards.

And I was thinking about girl.

After watching some reviews, the impression I'm getting is that the engineering on the RG 00 kits is much better than their MG brethern. I was thinking of getting a MG 00 XN Raiser or MG 00 Qan [t] Full Saber; am I better off sticking with their RG variants?

RG 00 Qan can't pull off the Burst mode whereas the MG can. Plus the RG Full Saber is P-Bandai, MG is not.

they're finicky. you have to cut them to size precicely. the manual provides a template. the issue comes with not providing enough slack in the joint when you bend them which causes all the problems people have. if you follow the measurements you shouldnt have an issue.

Master Airbrush Model TC-40T is the compressor I use and it serves me well.

Airbrush kind of depends on your budget. There are basically 3 tiers:
>cheap chink such as Hi-tsing (not sure how it's spelled) for absolute bottom tier
works ok
>badger patriot 105
most in /gpg/ will tell you this is a good starting airbrush and there is little reason to upgrade from here. This is what I use. You can get a finer .3mm needle for more precision too.
>$100+ tier
Iwata brushes such as the Eclipse are really popular. Really, I don't recommend spending this much unless you have been doing this for a while and have a specific feature or airbrush in mind you want.

>>16984353

Both the Mini Pla and Super Mini Pla kits throw just about every standard gunpla conventions out the window as far as construction, joints, etc.goes so I hope you're up for scratch building.
The kits themselves (at least the few from both line I have) are mostly fine although they have pretty basic color separation as a candy toy (despite being, you know, not actually priced as a candy toy) and stability is sometimes an issue (mostly the case with the SMP line because they strive for accuracy, whereas the MP line is generally gashpon attaching to gashpon).

Can't reply currently sorry phoneposting atm but I mostly filed everything, just missed some things, guess I will be redoing those. But I did want to leave the eyes alone because I wanted to photograph it afterwards and the light traveling through the piece I think will look cool if I can get my studio setup right for it. Also that pic was supposed to be the photoshopped version so ppl wouldn't complain about them because I didn't notice I missed them until I looked at the pic but I just uploaded the wrong one.

Definitely will be photographing it soon and hopefully leaving the eyes a clear piece will look good enough with bright backlighting outside of frame. If it doesn't I'll just give them the decal they came with and redo the shots sorry

The worst gunpla review I have ever watched has to be mecha gaikotsu.
He's a shit taster casual and he thinks gunpla kits with 90 degree articulation makes it bad like most re/100 kits he thinks they're not great even though it's a cheap alternative to master grades and it's pretty standard for kits to have some limited articulation but has some good aspects as well.
The other thing that I hate about gaikotsu is his irritating loud voice like you here on every shitty gaming channel that only plays fortnite and thinks spongebob memes are better anyway his voice is super shit and he always:
HEY GUYZZZ!!!! TODAY WERE GONNA REVIEW ANOTHER DUMB MODEL KIT HAHAHAHAHA
anyway please leave out the worst aspects of his shitty

Has anyone here built the Frame Arms Girl or Megami Device kits from Kotobukiya? I have the Hyper Pretty Armor model kit and was curious about building the real thing. But I've heard reviews of Kotobukiya's plastic quality being bad. Can anyone on gpg attest to that? Thanks bros
>>
>>16985020
I've built several Koto kits including the Baselard FAG and they're good. Not as perfectly engineered to hide seam lines and everything as modern bandai kits, but they're solid model kits.

So the plastic quality is almost the same as the bootleg's then? You're saying that it's not like building a daban kit vs building a bandai kit where the difference looks very obvious at first glance.
>>
>>16985020
They're good quality. The one in that pic though isn't of a Frame arms girl or good quality, its from a chinese knockoff company that steals peoples FAG custom ideas from twitter and sells them as kits.

also, i prop should have asked before finishing it but, how to deal with nubs white discoloration? ive been lightly filing things flat but its not good enough, should i just find a paint to cover them or will i just be bandaiding them out in post?

I don't know if they're marketed as such in Japan but I get the impression a lot of westerners to buy them just to be snap together action figures, hence most westerners being snapfags. In this case a lot of the idiots watching the reviews may expect or find it helpful to show off the articulation. I'm not sure if Mecha Gaikotsu and ZakuAurelius know this and are just playing to their YouTube market though.
>>
>>16985040
Those are stress marks on the plastic from where you cut it off the runner. There is no way to get rid of those without painting; they usually go deeper into the piece than the surface. You can usually avoid them by leaving more of the nub when you cut the piece off the runner (ie cut further away from the piece), and then sanding or trimming down the nub with a hobby knife, or a combination of trim with knife + hit it with a couple passes of 1000 grit sandpaper. Or get a pair of GodHands nippers (the expensive ones, SPN-120 I think, not cheaper GN-125).

I recommend just getting an airbrush setup and learning to paint if possible, marks will be a thing of the past. Props to you for asking at least and being willing to improve.

>>16985168

side note, ive seen some shots of models with what seem to be printed custom decals, would those be painted or is there a better way of doing this? ive heard of water-transfer.. is that it?
>>
>>16985270
Those are water slides aka water transfer decals. Bandai and others make sets for most MGs and RGs, as well as customs and generic sheets for random warning/caution symbols and stuff. They are INFINITELY better than using the stickers and decals that come with your kit. I highly recommend getting them for any kit you plan to add the decals to. (also, microset and microsol are good tools, especially microsol as it will lightly melt the decal and usually get rid of the border)

I usually order mine off ebay where I can find a US-based seller, they are also sold by some online shops but are not always in stock. They tend to be about $5-10 and are well worth it IMO. Don't think you have to get the official Bandai ones either, the third party ones like DL and Super Detail are good. Samueldecal used to take orders for custom decals (they can be printed with a special printer and paper) but he redid his website and I don't think he takes custom orders anymore.

RG sazabi will win.

MG jegan should win. One of the truly great things about it is bandai made it to where anyone can paint it, and not scratch the parts. SO many of their kits are so fucking tight and are not suited for anything but snapping/lacquer painting. Some people think the Jegan looks weird with no front skirt, but honestly it keeps the kit from scratching, along with other design choices.

alright so, i may decide to buy a gun and paint my 00 diver ace instead of buy the x09a i wanted, any recommendations on a cheap starter gun? or maybe a perfectly fine normal one, im not a caveman i can use an airbrush. paint brands etc? so much idk about model culture.

specifically i want to add scorching/impact wounds to it, which is something ive always wanted to do on a real model as i used my locker key, some charcoal and a sharpie to do it to my nice halo warthog model i had as a kid, but i realized that i probably have to give it some sort of primer too, right?
>>
>>16985780
Read the guide in the OP. There were also mentions of airbrushes and compressors earlier in this thread when another anon was asking about what to buy. Acrylics such as Tamiya are probably your best bet for starting out unless you have an environment where you can spray lacquers.

Do you clean modelling files with water, alcohol or dry with tooth brush?
>>
Is this where I shill Gunpla Tabletop Battle? Tried it after seeing an anon post about it last week. ACTUALLY had a blast. RX78 vs High Mobility Zaku II. Rolled Space Field so he became almost twice as fast as me with an extra move. My opening attack was a 3X damage crit from my rifle for 1/3 of his HP. Then he charged my ass and chopped most of my shield PLUS my rifle in half with his own crit. All downhill from there. I was stuck with a saber and vulcans chasing a much faster, better at melee suit. It seems like a surprisingly tight and fun and FAST system with alot of room for customization.
>>
Also, two feet and one leg of RG within 4 hours is way too slow or okay time?

I just cut, file and sand with 2500 and 4000 paper each part which takes time but at the other hand I feel that if I would skip that, it wouldn't look good in the end. I really want to leave as little traces left but I still do sometimes ;_;

But at the other hand, actual assembly time aka placing parts together, is small portion of total time and it kinda takes away some fun.

I don't know if RGs need paint at all... With all those stickers.

I just paint them because fuck stickers. If I want to add markings I'll just get a waterslide sheet.
2500 is really fine to start with though, you can easily use ~800 to quickly remove most of the nub and work your way up in steps of 400-500. Topcoat will generally hide sanding marks from 1500 and up anyway.

this is the best advice in all honesty. I thought GHs were a meme but they really do work and cut down cleanup dramatically, like by a lot. Just take care of them and don’t use them to cut straight into the runner like some reddit SEAmonkey and cry when the visibly thin blade croaks. Use GN-125 for cutting the runners.

Fuck off you shill.
>>
>>16985463
Care to explain why? I heard that the build booster is fragile, but anything else?
>>
>>16986754
The feet like to fall off because of the ankle frame extender piece, but that's minor.
My biggest complaint is that the cannons on the Build Booster can't clear the hip skirts when you swing them forward and the cannons themselves like to split apart at the balljoint.
Its hand options are also pretty lacking and the shield just sits on the arm very awkwardly.

Still it's a pretty fun build, I mean I enjoy building RGs, but in terms of the finished product I've had far more fun with other RGs.
>>
>>16986649

The single blade Mr Nippers don’t seem too great. They leave pretty visible stress marks. The GHs and Gundamplanets are much better.

Boy has good mobile suit, ruins it with terrible Gundam colors. Always a sad story.
>>
How do you guys dust stuff you're displaying? It's a pain in the ass
>>

detolf or shelves from ikea

Looks cool, but what?
>>
>>16986839
I literally just have a can of compressed air for the ones that aren't in a display case. The thin extension for cleaning between keyboard keys really works well for getting into joints and armor pieces.
>>
>>16986835
This is just my personal opinion but I've always felt that Gundamplanets aren't enough of a jump in quality over Mr. Nippers/Tamiya Side Cutters to recommend them. If you're gonna pay enough to get them you should just spend the 10$ for the GH.

I've used pretty much all nippers of note. God hands are not a meme and are totally worth it regardless of if you're a snapfag or not.

You're not wrong, I started in baby steps.
Hand painting tanks, then hand painting parts of gunpla, then just snapping RGs + small detailing, and now I am getting old kits almost exclusively to sand and paint them properly.
Hopefully I can level up again to use PlaPlates and make custom joins, there's not alot of great tutorials online for it but everyone else learned to do it by scratch and so will I.

So I am looking to compressors and people here have recommended Master Airbrush Model TC-40T and Airbrush Depot TC-20T. How good and quiet are they? I was looking over Amazon reviews and everyone mentions TC-40T being very quiet, but the few youtube videos I found on it have it being rather loud. What should one look out for when getting a compressor?

Thank you either way, currently trying to research what I can.
>>
>>16987034
they're quiet relative to hardware store compressors. compressors in general are loud as fuck. you want a moisture trap and a regulator which the master airbrush compressor has.
>>

>Do you paint outside
Yes because I have an old industrial air compressor that’s noisy as fuck and I have nowhere inside near a window to setup a spray booth and don’t want to risk staining the drywall/carpets.

Do you live in a cave?

There's absolutely nothing wrong with living in a cave, anon.

Is the gunpla sleeping anon?
No, this gunpla is deceased.

Actually looking at the chest, that's a clear green part there right? How much would it highlight if you painted behind it with a light color like silver or chrome?
>>
>>16987253
theres a chrome sticker behind it, i just have shit lighting
>>
So has anyone use those DecalUp sheets on ebay? They have some cool stuff on there that I want but I wanna make sure the quality isn't atrocious.
>>
>>16987282
If it ain't DL Decals then don't bother with it. DL Decals are fucking great. They have a lot of different color varieties including foil finish and they're thinner than Bandai ones.

Do they have anything with a more graffiti looking vibe like pic related? That's p.much the only reason I'm looking at non-Bandai options atm to begin with.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the quality of this general - complete lack of regard for context, just a race for "who can spot the nub first".

There's a system for Gunpla battles? Anyone want to fill me in?

highQ is better than DL, but doesnt do sheets for kits

More thinner anon, more thinner.

I'm sure you are very proud of your achievement

Not disagreeing with you, but where would I have thinned more? The entire kit is painted with 4 extremely thin coats of paint. The only bits I could see you referring to are on the arm where the panel line isn't visible (accidentally sanded it away) or on the shield maybe? But that's just a speck of dust on the end there.

Anything else I'd maybe blame on lighting, in hand it really doesn't look like it was painted, not to toot my horn or anything.

Pretty sure that there's some autist giving the most basic criticism thinking he's doing people a favour.
>>
>>16986802
I finished an mg zgok recently, it was a pretty good kit for when it released, but I wish we could just get an upscaled rg.

Damn, shame about those stickers but that paint job came out real nice anon. Might steal that scheme for mine.
