According to the book and movie there's only the explosive magic, but she has learned how to dial it down to the level where it's merely threatening and not lethal, like she does against for example Fishman and Twilight in the cage. If she wants to do something more controllable, a prosthetic or other implement is definitely needed.
In the comics, the damage is purely cosmetic and she can do things like levitation just fine. She also doesn't "leak" magic in the comic like she does in the movie.

Hard to say. There's one comic taking place before the movie, but IIRC there's no magic in that one.
There's also one that I think is meant to take place during the movie, towards the end after Storm King is defeated but before the party in Canterlot. That one has her use telekinesis.
The latter one was released fairly recently and despite not fitting into canon and only getting Tempest's character so-so (better in the 2nd part) it's an unusually good comic worth a read.

And yeah. That's a fair argument. While I don't personally consider that piece AS atrocious as many others, there's undeniably a ton of tumblr style influences in it. The fucking retarded ears, the sparkly ass Twilight, the strange blush and choice of colors, etc.

I wonder if you can "disarm" a unicorn by attacking their confidence.
>>
>>32902697
That's not true. Never has been and never will be.
Even such a simple thing as Greentext conventionally being written in 2nd person perspective while real prose is typically written in 3rd or 1st completely wrecks your statement.

There's a reason no mainstream bestseller has ever been written in 2nd person perspective, can you guess why?
>>
>>32902760
No, this headcanon of yours doesn't have any basis in the show unfortunately.

You can disarm a unicorn by distracting their concentration, as we see many times, but as long as they can reach a zen enough state where they can concentrate, emotional state is irrelevant for unicorn magic.

Have you been living under a rock or something these past couple of years? I mean... Literally fanfiction that is also a mainstream bestseller.
But for the sake of argument, I'm more than willing to restrict things to pony fanfics and pony greentext only. Out of the best fanfics out there, how many are written in 2nd person? Can you provide an example?
>>
>>32902765
>That's not true. Never has been and never will be.
There are reformatted greentext on fimfic right now. That alone proves that it's not only possible, and also not that hard.
>real prose
There is no "real" and "not real" prose. Change of perspective doesn't affect the quality by itself either. Otherwise I'd like to hear which perspective do you think defines better literature: 1st or 3rd person?
>mainstream bestseller
Because sells=sign of quality, right?
But the argument wasn't about the overall quality of greentext, but their quality compared to regular fanfiction. There is barely any difference. Typical topics differ, yes, but topics aren't indicative of writing quality either. If that was the case we could bring up all the anthro shit on fimfic and the case would be closed.

Of course we don't, so far the only differences you've pointed out was "it has different perspective" and "it's not making big cash", both of which I've argued in >>32902817 which was left without answer, so I guess there really is no argument to be had.

I have never argued it's not possible to reformat greentext and post it on fimfic, that is obviously possible. Assuming you can get past the filters you can just slam your face on the keyboard and post that on fimfic, too.
The claim you made was that I couldn't tell whether a story was slightly edited greentext or an original fic. So go ahead. Prove it.

>There is no "real" and "not real" prose.
Yes there is. A poem for example is not prose at all.
Prose is defined as "the ordinary language people use in speaking or writing" per Merriam-Webster, and I would argue greentext does not qualify as real prose as 2nd person narratives is a tiny, niche subset of writing dissimilar from ordinary language. Would you prefer if I used a term like psedu-prose for greentext? Calling them poetry seems even weirder to me at least.

>But the argument wasn't about the overall quality of greentext, but their quality compared to regular fanfiction. There is barely any difference.
You say that but you have yet to demonstrate it. You're right on the money about topics.
I brought up bestsellers in an attempt to highlight the limitations of 2nd person as a medium, if it had merits it should logically be able to compete on the marketplace, right? If it was as good as 1st and 3rd person then surely a few books written in 2nd person would have become bestsellers, right? People have known about 2nd person for ages, the concept isn't some new, recent invention.
>>
>>32902869
Yet it's very interesting how your 'rebuttal' consists of a simple declaration of "no, it's not possible". Unfortunately for you, declarations don't fly in this house.

No, you brought it up in a textbook case of argumentum ad populum. Again.
>If it was as good as 1st and 3rd person then surely a few books written in 2nd person would have become bestsellers, right?
QED.

>Prose is defined as "the ordinary language people use in speaking or writing"
Etymological fallacy aside, how does second-person not fit that bill, pray tell? It's meant to place you in the shoes of the subject, while simultaneously keeping you distanced enough to observe outside events. Done well, that can absolutely be the case.
If you disagree with that statement, perhaps with the claim of "no greentext (I've read) is like that", then you're not reading the right ones. Provided your doubtless vast filter list hasn't blinded you to their existence, you have no reason to have not picked up on at least one from any given thread here. Care for some examples? I'd be happy to supply some, and I'm sure the others here would love to, too.
>>
>>32902978
>So go ahead. Prove it.
Do you want me to post converted greens so you can call them converted greens, or post random fanfics so you take a guess by reading their descriptions?
>A poem for example is not prose at all.
That's not what I meant. You're making a No True Scotsman argument here. Prose doesn't magically become "not real" if it's written in second person.
>if it had merits it should logically be able to compete on the marketplace
How is that relevant? I'm still waiting for you to explain to me how does changing a point of view change the quality of the story. If I'm going to write the same story in three different points of view, are you going to judge them solely on that merit and dismiss the second-person one because "it's just not popular enough"?

First one has had more substantial changes than was initially allowed. It's actually been rewritten in parts to better fit into prose, not just turned into paragraphs as per the original claim. While I wouldn't qualify this as being one of the best (written) fanfics out there, it does get passing grades while still being 2nd person.
Second one as well. Same thing there.
Third one has far less substantial changes and is clearly a greentext. Tell-tale signs include short run-on sentences and inconsistent tense. Definitely not one of the best fics or even particularly good by greentext standards.
Fourth has the same problems as the third, but not to the same extent. It also shows signs of larger rewrites in parts while other parts remain almost untouched from it's original format. In my opinion that actually makes it worse to read than the amateurish and/or non-native English writing #3.
Fifth is completely rewritten into 3rd and 1st person. What the fuck dude?

>Do you want me to post converted greens so you can call them converted greens
How you decide to prove the unsubstantiated claim you made is up to you. What is asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence. I'll have to leave soon but if you really care you could for example take segments of fics and drop them into pastebins for later.
>Prose doesn't magically become "not real" if it's written in second person.
My argument is that 2nd person is not prose, as it's not the way ordinary language is spoken or written. Same reason poetry isn't prose, or a list of e.g. cooking ingredients isn't prose. I used the qualifier real prose to distinguish between 2nd person and the conventional 1st/3rd, as one can make the argument 2nd person is at least some form of pseudo-prose or whatever. Not pure prose? Not traditional prose? Which one do you prefer, and why is this so important to you?
>I'm still waiting for you to explain to me how does changing a point of view change the quality of the story.
Try writing a story with an unreliable narrator in 2nd person. You'll quickly find it's not doable, since *you* are the narrator. Just the quickest and easiest to demonstrate example I could come up with.
>If I'm going to write the same story in three different points of view, are you going to judge them solely on that merit and dismiss the second-person one because "it's just not popular enough"?
No, but if you do that exercise and are a good writer I think you'll see the inherent limitations with 2nd person narrative, especially if you write the 1st/3rd person first and try to convert it to 2nd later. If you want to write a compelling main character for example, as most good stories do, you will almost inevitably alienate the reader as they rebel and say "no I wouldn't do/say/feel that". The alternative is to make a bland, nondescript main character with no room for character development or a meaningful arc. Also known as a bad character.

Oho, wait a tick here. When did you set conditions and allowances? I sifted through your posts, yet couldn't find mention of these conditions beyond nebulous statements of 'real prose'. Do I detect a hint of goalpost shifting here?
>... or even particularly good by greentext standards
Excuse me, but what are these standards you're referring to? Every one ever written? A limited subset of some description? Specifics are very important here.

Listen, it's painfully obvious by this point that your only two positions here are "I don't like greentext", and "I don't like second-person". "I don't like X". How /mlp/ is that, eh?
It won't matter what examples anyone provides, what arguments they offer. Your ignoring of my own arguments, and cherrypicking of examples, is testament to this. You've already made your mind up about it, you have an emotional connection to this position, and thus you will not alter your view on this subject, thus making this entire discussion in bad faith from the very beginning. Luckily, I love wrestling in the digital mud.
All you had to do was just come out and state that "I personally don't like these formats", and that would have been the end of this. But no, you had to be a shitbiscuit about it, and try to apply and justify your preference onto everyone, lauding it over our heads as if you were the judge, jury and executioner of what constitutes good fanfiction, with all the specious argumentation to accompany it.
As for your hangup of fiction needing to be "real prose", I only have one statement to proffer in response. "Know the rules well, so you can break them effectively".

No, you're projecting. I was just making it clear that this is no longer about the original argument that started this, i.e.
>Take a greentext, delete all the meme arrows, make regular paragraphs out of it and post in fimfic. You won't see a difference.
That I wouldn't be able to tell that a story was a greentext if you "just" remove the meme arrows and such. Putting all the cards on the table so to speak and clearly distinguishing the two arguments from one another. You know as well as I do the substantial changes made to the fic does not matter for *this* argument, as the story still fits all *these* criteria:
>Out of the best fanfics out there, how many are written in 2nd person? Can you provide an example?
This story, while heavily rewritten from it's original greentext form, is still 2nd person and therefore qualifies. While it's not one of the best fanfics I've read it is quite good and thus gets passing grades.

>Excuse me, but what are these standards you're referring to?
My standards. I have read many greentexts that in my opinion are better, that I like more. For example ones that don't jump between past and present tense. Doing that is a bad thing by my standards.

>Listen, it's painfully obvious by this point...
As I said, you're projecting.

>if you really care
Not really. We seem to be arguing about different things and you seem to be dead set on disliking greentext just because it's greentext. Fortunately for you, no one is writing anything here any time soon, so you're safe. I just think it's ironic that you try being an elitist here of all places for liking one type of fanfiction over the other. In the end you're still here so it's your loss. I know Tempest threads were always above le /mlp/ culture with AiE hate and all, but I don't think it benefits anyone in the end.
>My argument is that 2nd person is not prose, as it's not the way ordinary language is spoken or written
Do you ordinary speak in third person? Are you Trixie? It's not an argument, anon. Sure, it's not traditional, but there's no reason to not count it as prose. The Internet seems to agree on that too, since it's just a point of view in prose. It's not important to me, but you seem to define greentext through it, while it is absolutely possible to write greentext in 1st and 3rd person. What then? Does it automatically become better?
>Try writing a story with an unreliable narrator in 2nd person
What if I don't try and do that?
>you'll see the inherent limitations with 2nd person narrative
As if 1st and 3rd person don't have any limitations.
>you will almost inevitably alienate the reader as they rebel and say "no I wouldn't do/say/feel that"
So when you read something in 1st person you absolutely can't feel that way, even though it is "you" who does/says/feels that way. I don't think you can use this as an argument, not to mention it's just an opinion. Just as I can say that I've never felt alienated by 2nd person view.
>The alternative is to make a bland, nondescript main character with no room for character development or a meaningful arc.
Or you can just not do that and write your thing? Again, tell me how you feel about being told what your character says/does/feels in first-person prose.
>>
>>32903230

Reading the comics without seeing what they're about beforehand, was interested to see the one I'm on now is about Tempests life AFTER the movie.

No it's before the end of the movie. In the movie she removes the Storm King's insignia from her armor after she's reformed, but she still displays it in the comic. It's not just an artistic error either because it's on every page almost, every panel where her flank is shown, so it has to be before the end of the movie if it's meant to be in the same universe.

Just rewatched the movie this week, so I'm glad there's a thread up. I didn't realize the first time through, but Tempest really steals the show. Emily Blunt definitely doesn't sound like a traditional voice actress, but in a way that's actually interesting rather than bad. Then there's the facial animations. I'm mesmerized by her eye movements, like in pic related. She does these wide, almost vacant stares sometimes, and her eyes are always darting around. There's so much going on there. Whenever Tempest is in a scene, I'm just locked onto her face.

Before I saw the film and I'd only seen screens and promo art of her, all I could think was "ow the edge," but after watching it several times through now, she's far and away my favorite of the new characters introduced. I would say that I hope we get to see her again, but I doubt that'll happen for obvious reasons.

I think the best way to summarize what's going on with her animation is that it doesn't "go together".
Like... Eyes say one thing, face and body language says another, horn sparkles erratically, and her mood goes all over the place.
The most obvious answer is that she's meant to be unpredictable and therefore scary. If the audience (subconsciously) can't get a clear read on her what she potentially COULD do is worse than what she actually DOES do, which is very handy if you later on intend to redeem the character and cast her in a new light.

But with for example >>32940087 you can definitely read more into it than that if you want to. IMO she looks not just unpredictable like in most of the movie but also unsure, a part of herself doubts the path she's on.
But eh. Could be just reading too much into it. Or it could be put there intentionally, they certainly did put a LOT of attention to details like that. One would have to rewatch the movie scene by scene again to see if there's a pattern, what is her expressions moments before she throws herself in front of the Storm King's beam and saves the mane6, for example, or what's what's her exact expression seconds after she's saved by Twilight?

>she's far and away my favorite of the new characters
>I hope we get to see her again

But what are her eyes saying when they go wide and dart around?

It's completely contextual. Looking at >>32940087, you could read into it that she's saying one thing and thinking another. While she sounds confident she might have doubts. Or it means nothing, and it's just done to make her seem more erratic.

I want to scritch her chin. I need to scritch her chin.
