/mu/ - Music

Thread archived.
You cannot reply anymore.

It's October 5th!

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Hearing this and really liking it, it's pretty normal music as i wanted to hear, is somewaht slow and serious, so i can say i made a right choice by keeping it in my hard drive, there is a lite wall of sound as normally in shoegaze releases and yeah is quite enjoyable.

I don't know what should i play next :/

I couldn't find a /sqt/ so I'll hijack this thread.

What's a good cheap USB sound card that I can use with an active xlr mic?
Bonus points if it has 5mm input, but it's absolutely not essential.

Also, 2 moves to take material.

This album of songs attributed to Alfonso X sits slightly after the medievalist revival's heyday, and perhaps this accounts for the clean and tidy performances given here, especially with regard to the somewhat clinical recording. Lamandier brings agile embellishments to the winding, snaking melodies, giving a little kick to what might otherwise be heard as a sleepy set of tunes. Remarkably she performs all of her accompaniments herself, variously on harp, fiddle, and organ. Whilst the harp pieces are anodyne, the fiddled and especially the organ parts are particularly nice, with the clacking of keys providing some faintly percussive dancing rhythms to those performances where featured.

Alfonso el Sabio: Cantigas de Santa Maria (1981) by Esther Lamandier, recommneded by Letov

>Wolfgang Dauner Quintet - The Oimels (1969)

A 1969 album that's more patently 60s than it is strictly psychedelic. Sure, it bears plenty of its hallmarks--odd key changes, some whimsical studio effects that may or may not be musique concrete, Barry Melton-esque guitar twang. Still, this comes across closer to the theme from I Dream of Genie with eastern touches in its deliciously dated compressed pop tones or some Traffic-like jazz rock...i.e. technically primitive jazz with a rock approach. Listen to the opener, "Baby I Don't Love You Anymore," and see how while they're all skilled as soloists with interesting ideas, there's no formal understanding of structure and they end up playing over each other.

That's not to say this isn't interesting. In fact, like many a relatively dull 60s psychedelic LP, there's at least one truly fresh, out-there idea, most notably the Miles Davis-Jimmy Smith-John Cage funhouse hybrid that is "Dig My Girl," which alone convinces me of this album's strength.

Mary Lee Roberts - Open Space 9 (1997)
>Electronic, Experimental
Spacious sounding computer generated electronic music with a narrative-driven compositional style. She does a great job exploring sounds and linking passages together rather than assembling a bunch of independent noises. The music evolves from wispy background drone to abrasive bleeps so you really have to focus on the music alone to get anywhere with it. Enjoyed it nonetheless.
7.0 /10

Jon Gibson - In Good Company
>Minimalism
Almost like a 'greatest hits' comp for minimalism, heh. Contains some great music and musicianship, but almost all the songs here are best explored elsewhere and the disc does not flow comprehensively at all. A grab bucket of minimalism.

Don't really have any, but I mostly listen to hip-hop and folk pop. I enjoy pretty much any type of music except for harsh noise (which I can't really seem to get into)
>>
Helios Creed - X-Rated Fairy Tales (1985)
>space rock, industrial rock

I got pretty much exactly what I expected here—a much lesser Chrome. The vocals of Damon Edge are missed here, he brought an infectious nervous energy to the band's sound that can't be recaptured here, making this album seem a bit more stilted and less organic. Creed carves out a really cool industrial, spacy sound, but it's not like the band hasn't carved out that same exact sound before.

2.5+

水曜日のカンパネラ - ジパング (2015)
>japanese hip hop, electronic

Not nearly as inventive or cool as Superman, a flaccid, trend-hopping release through and through. It touches on tropical house and trap, primarily, and it doesn't do either of these well, necessarily. It's competent, sure, but overly plain and unremarkable, and the rapping is generally fairly awful. When it moves away from hip hop and goes more into house territory, I like it quite a bit more, because the production itself is very good, even if the rest of this album's components don't work together to create a solidly cohesive product.

2.0+

Nathan Salsburg - Affirmed (2011)
>contemporary folk

Feel-good, cozy fall music. It's a standard primitivism-tinged album of solo guitar work, some vocals here and there, but primarily rooted in instrumentals. Doesn't reinvent the wheel, and frankly it's sometimes a bit tedious and meandering. Salsburg's playing is good enough to keep the whole thing entertaining though, and the whole thing has such an affable, enjoyable down-to-earth vibe to it that makes it emminently loveable and enjoyable. And it's only around thirty minutes, so that doesn't hurt.

Father's Children - Who's Gonna Save the World (2011)
>psychedelic soul

Damn near classic of a soul album lost to time. The real star of the show here is the hard-hitting, psychedelic instrumental work, dear lord. The fuzz guitar is prominent on nearly every track, and it is incredible. Fuzz guitar in soul/funk is a definite musical fetish of mine and these guys utilize it perfectly. The vocals aren't anything to write home about, they serve their purpose but this isn't a Curtis Mayfield/Aretha Franklin type deal where the major emphasis is put on the vocals. This is all about the banging instrumentals, and boy does it deliver.

3.0

Jimmie Spheeris - Isle of View (1971)
>singer/songwriter, folk pop

Firstly, Jimmie Spheeris is the brother of The Decline of Western Civilization/Wayne's World director Penelope Spheeris, so that's cool! The music here is kinda wimpy Simon & Garfunkel/Cat Stevens-type folk pop/rock, done well but without much conviction or pizzaz. Spheeris knows how to write a tune, but he doesn't know how to properly evoke the emotions his songs require, making this whole album seem a bit forced and unemotional. Pleasnt, though, surely.

Various Artists - King of Dub (1979)
>dub

A-side is solid, underwhelming compared to the monolithic, pummeling b-side yet still solid. There's really not much to say about this other than it's really well-done dub that does everything I want dub to do, it just suffers from some underwhelming tracks.

3.0+

Eldridge Skell's the Rude Staircase - Sookie Jump (2007)
>avant-prog, experimental rock

I'd like to rec this to any Thinking Fellers fans here, this definitely seems like the rightful successor to the Fellers' idiosyncratic, humorous sound. This album cover suggests something incredibly humorous and off-the-wall, and while that's not too far off from the actual case, this has insane amounts of depth and instrumental/compositional prowess. The goofiness is sometimes overbearing, although it more often than not serves to compliment the avant-prog tracks rather then harming them. Humor and avant-prog generally does seem to be a match made in heaven, and that is mostly the case here.

Slo Burn - Amusing the Amazing (1997)
>stoner rock

Hard-hitting stoner rock from Kyuss' John Garcia. Like Kyuss, Garcia is pretty much the worst part of this band as well, but the rest of the band more than makes up for his vocal shortcomings. They don't quite reach the psychedelic desert heights of Homme and co., but they try damn hard to do so, and they come very close to succeeding, the riffs on this thing are absolutely monstrous. Tasty stuff.

3.0-

Primus - The Desaturating Seven (2017)
>progressive rock, funk rock, experimental rock

This starts off remarkably promising, the band jams like they haven't jammed since the '90s, and they take on a darker, heavier sound well, despite how often this band revels in its own goofiness. Around the fourth or so track this takes a massive turn for the worst, as Claypool decides to once again use the band as his own solo vehicle for bass noodling. I love me some Claypool bass noodling, but he's treading old ground on practically every track here, his more solo pieces are uninteresting, meandering, and in stark contrast to the anxiety-ridden nature of the album's first couple tracks.

Following with the normal music queue i'm hearing to My Favorite Things by Coltrane.

Sounds pretty good, is normal jazz, some improv here and there, besides that it doesn't have too much imagery to offer i can say it's pretty comfy, i have to say, i'm even enjoying it, i would say that releases like this are more sound focused but to be honest i would be speaking too fast, for someone that doesn't know anything about jazz like myself.

Also, it's me or most non-imagery records use to have a picture of the musician(s) as an artwork?

Miles Davis - Birth Of The Cool (1957)
>Cool Jazz
Cool Indeed. Some pretty restrained stuff for the most part, rather softly blown.
Keeps a modest tone for a pretty large ensemble (9 players) and avoids the bombast of big band swing.
Gets a little polyphonic at times which is nice, drives away any monotony.
That bonus track is a bit iffy though, don't think Davis really works well with a singer. Still a solid comp album either way.
3.5

Iglooghost - Chinese Nu Yr (2015)
>Electronic, some weird genres i've never heard of
The sound design is pretty cool at most points, it's very dense.
One of my favorite Aphex Twin (Yes, very rockist of me and all that... I know next to nothing about electronic music) songs is "To Cure A Weakling Child," and I hear some of that in this.
It's also got some Lopatin/Ferraro-esque synth stuff for the lead. Not a huge fan of how the percussion and bass synths are handled in a lot of parts, though.
The features seemed totally unnecessary.
For something as seemingly ADD as this, the song structure can be disappointingly predictable (by 'predictable' I mean that I expected something as senseless as Mr Bungle where a song might just change genre entirely halfway through, that is a somewhat over the top way to make a song especially dynamic but it does get the point through).
Makes me want to hear more in this style/from this artist, though.
2.5+

Sequentia (Hildegard Von Bingen) - Canticles of Ecstasy (1994)
>Medieval Music, Chant
Just one big voice, there's no counterpoint, fairly simple harmony, but it sounds great nonetheless.
There is something more innocent about this that the modernist and minimalist imitators failed to capture. It's genuine, no hint of sarcasm or tongue in cheek.
And there is something to this, just basking in it and the acoustics of it all. Something is inevitably lost in the process of recording music, but this performance comes very close to representing the sound of plainsong.

Radio Birdman - Radios Appear (1977)
>punk rock

Fun punk album, surfy vibes take over the whole album and give it an earnest sense of playfulness. It lacks a bit of energy that makes it less urgent and "punky" than any of its '77 contemporaries, being a bit more rooted in classic rock & roll than anything else. This, however, gives it a uniqueness that other punk albums don't have, it's rootsy, it's classic, it's down-to-earth, and most importantly, it's a thrashy good time.

3.0-

ju sei - Conesolo (2011)
>avant-folk, art pop

A mixed bag with more positive than negative aspects. The experimental, electronic elements don't always fare too well, especially when they're sparse enough to simply focus on screaming and little more, but the folkier, more organic tracks are lovely. Experimental enough to really stand out yet still firmly rooted in traditional, incredibly pastoral folk music. Interesting, to say the least.

2.5

מאיר אריאל - שירי חג ומועד ונופל (1978) HOW THE FUCK DO YOU COPY HEBREW
>singer/songwriter, folk pop

Jazzy folk pop in the Cat Stevens school. Dude's got a killer voice, and what I assume to be killer poetry, even though I don't understand a lick of Hebrew, he just delivers it in such a passionate manner. Instrumentals are more typical, and they don't mesh particularly well with the vocals, but it's all still solid, and it's overall a pleasant, solid album in a style I don't normally care for.

Weezer - Weezer [Red Album] (2008)
>power pop, alternative rock

Total piece of shit, but at least it's a somewhat interesting piece of shit. "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived (Variations on a Shaker Hymn)" is so odd in Weezer's catalogue, a six-minute rock opera indebted more to hip hop (*shudder*) and prog than power pop. It's absolutely terrible, but you have to admire the sheer bravado of it, even if Rivers Cuomo saying "but soon I'll be playing in your underwear" legitimately sent a shiver down my spine. "Pork and Beans" is a soild tune that I have lots of memories of related to its 2008 internet culture time capsule of music video, and then the rest is totally forgettable. It's still more interesting than any other shitty Weezer albums because it at least somewhat dares to shake up the formula, but still, just no.

0.5

also, good lord, rivers cuomo in that fucking cowboy hat will never not be hilarious

Good-day /mu/, tried the following albums recently;

>Metz - s/t. This is a good noise rock album though otherwise offers little outside of overly-cluttered noise bursts without much in the way of abrasive texture.
>Metz - Strange Things. This album's intro "Mess of Wires" is fantastic and brings forward a more catastrophic mixture of sound that feels as if you are being pulled out of a space-craft at high-speeds whilst crash-landing on Venus. i also appreciate them broadening their sound a lot more, playing practically into shoegaze on "Lost in the Blank City".
>Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come. Its okay, no-where near as good as I was expecting though I do like the vocal melody on Liberation Melody, its kinda cute. I don't see why people think New Noise is anything special.

I recall a couple people here like that quirky Japanese zolo, here's something to check out:

>i have dreams - demo
the songs are written well enough but the guitars sound pretty bad. they sound like theyre being played back to me through a telephone. which is weird because the vocals and drums sound fine. i dunno. cover art is nice.
