For me, it is the McChicken. The best fast food sandwich.

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

I had lamb in my schedule for Oct 7th and Woolite for 14th. Since lamb's been posting on listenalongs recently and gave us an album for this week on discord whereas Woolite hasn't showed up yet and since Kanzler's MIA:

The fact that so many books refer to Szechuan sauce as “the greatest or most influential” sauce ever only tells you how far sauces still are from becoming a respected ingredient. Spice critics have long recognized the greatest spices of all time are coriander and nutmeg, who were not the most famous or the best sellers of their time, let alone of all times. Dressing critics rank the highly controversial 1000 island dressing over classic dressings that were highly popular in eateries around Europe. Sauce critics are still blinded by commercial success. Szechuan sauce sold more than anyone (not true, by the way), therefore it must have been the greatest. Spice critics grow up tasting a lot of spices of the earth, dressing critics grow up tasting a lot of spices of the earth. Sauce critics are often totally ignorant of the sauces of the world, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think Szechuan sauce did anything worthy of being saved.

Hikashu - Hikashu History
>thursday
>prog-rock/pop
An Ian F. Martin favorite (in my head the F stands for Fucking) , so thought to dig a little more into the band. Was a tad put off when realized this is a compilation album (sue me - thought album name was them claiming their chunk o history)

Expected to be non-plussed because it was a compilation and because i couldnt remember liking the the other Hikashu album I had listened to (as prep, went back to it and listened: yung me is a dummy, Ten Ten Ten is a fucking amazing album - the macro-dynamics!!). The compilation prejudice slipped away too, as it becomes obvious there was thought and care put into the arangement of tracks.

Sonically: techno-kayou pop, deconstructed prog/post-punk, a veritable selection of percussion, brass scramblings over the aforementioned, really thick and fun bass tones/lines. There are some real fun tracks (and some that overstep the cheesy line a little too daringly).

Overall, Ten Ten Ten is so much better (more confident with its cheese, more brash with its jazz/synth flirtations), but definitely an album ill be rapping fingers to window and when stuck in traffic..
Phew - Five Finger Discount
>friday
>art pop
I'll keep this short - loved this album. Phew's voice has this fantastic transparent strength to it - sounds thin/brittle, but carries a hardiness about it - chalk it up to gram-gram strength (note: do not know if phew is a grandma). Buouyed by the vocals the arrangements move from whimsical to languorous to charged quite seamlessly.

Verdict: mandatory to play before not calling grandma

strongly disagree that the bootlegs, akasaka blitz, and corduroy's mood need to be before 98.12.28, especially the former two.

How I would do it:
-Maybe keep the EP where it is
-Put the bootlegs, live videos after 98.12.28
-Akasaka Blitz can go probably /beside/ 98.12.28 as "give me this but more like their earlier career"
-Put all three Space Shower episodes or just the SS boxset of the fishmans live DVDs under "I want to hear more of their songs live" instead of just Space Shower 1. Could also go after 98.12.28.
-Possibility I was considering: LIne from Long Season to "Season" single saying "This but as just one song that's pretty different"

Otherwise I like the addition of side-projects and post-Shinji stuff.

there are two artists on this chart that are younger than me

ouch

William S. Fischer - Circles (1970)
>jazz-rock

Really out-there jazz-rock, think Bitches Brew or Sextant but even less accessible and a bit less grandiose in nature. The jazz-rock is more akin to the former album, and the more electronic bits are like the latter. It doesn't do electronic terribly well, Fischer doesn't let his pieces amount to much more than aimless noodling. It's cool, certainly, albeit completely unsubstantial and occasionally grating. Jazz-rock, on the other hand, is done very well here. Maintains a certain level of experimentation that sets it apart from its contemporaries without ever becoming too heady like in the straight experimental bits.

3.0-

Dodgy - Free Peace Sweet (1996)
>britpop, power pop

An album like this really doesn't need to be an hour long, but I digress. Dodgy balances a thin line between catchy as sin Teenage Fanclub-esque power pop and meatheaded, unenjoyable Oasis-esque britpop. They're more power pop than anything for the majority of this album, and they do the style well, but the britpop definitely rears its ugly head more often than I'd like it to. The lesser tracks are spread out far enough to not really hurt the album terribly, but their impact is felt. Enjoyable pop album overall, though.

2.5+

Poison Idea - Feel the Darkness (1990)
>hardcore punk

A lot more adventurous than I thought it was gonna be. Starts out with a little piano piece, and it doesn't ever really leave that idiosyncratic space. That's all well and good, if the band actually did this more adventurous style well. Far and away the more straightforward tracks on here are the best, fast-paced, thrashy and snotty. When the tempo slows down the frantic energy that makes the hardcore tracks work is completely neutered, it's boring to listen to and the vocals fit very poorly. Straight-up, no-frills hardcore by these guys would rock, which sadly isn't the case here.

Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac (1975)
>pop rock

I suppose I'm long overdue for a relisten of Rumours. The wimpy, subdued soft rock/pop on here is insanely good. "Rhiannon" and "Landslide" are classics for damn good reasons, they're melancholic pop perfection. Not a single note out of place with such a beautiful, yearning quality to them. Their blues rock past comes up a bit more often than I'd like it to, and there are definitely a few pop tunes that lack the same memorability that the best tracks have. Mostly, though, I can't deny this.

2.5+

Greta Van Fleet - Black Smoke Rising (2017)
>blues rock, hard rock

Well, they really do sound like Led Zeppelin. Uncanilly so, their vocalist sounds exactly like Robert Plant, and they nail the quality of Page's riffs and the tightness of Jones and Bonham's rhythm section. The fact that they sound exactly like a much superior, incredibly popular band poses the question: what's the point? They don't have that raw, carnal energy that makes Led Zeppelin good, they're playing neutered versions of their hits without the blood, sex, or sinew, it's just utterly pointless. Gotta give them props for evoking their sound so perfectly, and for having some great, catchy riffs of their own, but really, there's no point to this.

ၼၢင်းၼၢင်း - လက်ရေးစဉ် ဝေားများ (Le Ywei Sin Tei Mya) (1978)
>stereo

I dig it. Stereo isn't exactly a genre I've ever really heard before, so this was a solid introduction. It's samey and repetitive, yeah, but it's also raw and undeniably catchy. It's impressive how well Nang Nang is able to balance raw, lo-fi racket with beautifully melodic songwriting and guitar work. Anybody have any stereo recs to throw my way?

3.0+

Guice - Ashes Off My Blunt (1995)
>memphis rap

A really odd album in the memphis rap canon. Takes a lot more from g-funk than anything else, much more laid-back and melodic than energetic and infernal. The beats aren't hi-hat heavy and the rapping isn't primarily in triplets. Because it takes away a lot of what I like about memphis rap, I'm not a huge fan of this, but it plays with the genre in interesting ways, and it's a very chill, catchy album at its core.

2.5

Hound Dog Taylor & The Houserockers - Beware of the Dog (1976)
>electric blues

More raucous, guitar-driven blues from the man that seems to be the master of this style. This whole thing stays in obvious 12-bar blues the whole time, and that's definitely a turn-off for me, but it's twelve-bar blues done with the energy and sheer power it deserves. Taylor is a killer vocalist and an amazing guitarist, and the Houserockers are a great backing band.

Why is no one ever in the plug.dj room? The fuck is up with you faggots? Does /mu/ only have 10 posters?
Every single time I've tried to get into the /mu/ plug.dj there hasn't been a single person in the room for at least a day. Now I go into the room and the last play was 4 days ago.
This fucking thread was made 1 day ago, and the faggot who made it couldn't even go into into the plug room and play a single song.

If you can go multiple threads without anyone making a single play in the plug.dj threads, it's time to cut it out and stop trying to pretend there is some kind of a /mu/ community on plug.dj.

what is your malfunction? the /daily/ room is not the /mu/ plug.dj, it's the /daily/ plug.dj. there is no single /mu/ room. i'm not sure if you've noticed or not but this is a very popular board on a very popular website with hundreds of different people using it every day. /daily/ is a much smaller seperated community of like, i don't know, twenty five active people at most? and yes, we do use the plug room, because we do. i'm really not sure where the confusion there is because you can see the room history and you pointed it out yourself. people are not interested in listening to music or listening to other people's music choices at all times (not to mention that people actually do things besides sit on 4chan all day. hard to believe, i know.)

but even besides ALL of that, why do people have to be using it constantly or not use it at all? there is no expiration date on a plug.dj room. no one is "pretending" to do or be anything. i am completely lost on how you came to this way of thinking, or what your reasoning behind it is. do you have a diagnosed mental issue that prohibits you to properly asses social situations?

holy hell yeah this is really nice. The ONE change I might make is saying in the blurb above 98.12.28 that people should probably listen to all of the studio versions of the songs on it before listening (hence the mixtape), but it's your choice I guess.

I think you're right about not adding the box set for now, but once someone gets a copy (might cop if I start up my new job soon) it should be added.

I remember I considered making Orange or Kuchu Camp the start place since it's the best center point for getting into the rest of their albums, but I'd feel weird doing that considering they're most well-known for Long Season anyways, and someone looking to get into them has probably already heard that anyways.

plug used to be filled a couple years ago (at its height on occasion there were upwards of 20-30 people in there) but plug went offline for over a year, came back and was unreliable/tons of people lost their accounts, people lost interest, and in general I think the people who stuck with /daily/ got bored of it so very few n00bs joined. The discord is slightly more active as well as the soulseek room. There was also a skype room but don't ask about that.
>>

>>
>>75606357
I had a discussion with my other Fishmans Maniac Friend about whether people should listen to all the studio albums before 98.12.28.

He argued that most people are just really interested in Long Season and 98.12.28. Like they haven't even heard anything else and we're all the exceptions digging their early stuff.
I thought he had a point so I figured I'd let the pathways speak for themselves. Either people go to 98.12.28 straight from Orange and then give the rest a shot or they're already into Orange and decide to take the path that includes the studio albums (and maybe Oh! Mountain!)

Anyway I made a backup of the .ai file in case anyone happens to buy SS2 and 3 so I can add them then.

I uploaded the final version here: http://4chanmusic.wikia.com/wiki/Flowcharts?venotify=saved

Maybe ya can do some advertisements for the chart when someone asks ayy

>The Jam - All Mod Cons
Some Kinks, some Who, little bit Clash... but less than the some of these parts.
I've got a pretty strong handle on punk's history, but very little familiarity with the mod scene, so listening to the foremost mod revival band includes a bit of catch up and educated guessing. That said, this falls kind of flat for me for similar reasons to a lot of early Who: I don't relate to the mod scene, it strikes me as very stuffy and dandy, and too-cool in order to be exclusive. There are directly opposed to what appeals to me about the punk scene.
For punk, I want a fresh, challenging sound, or unavoidable, strong lyrics. This brings neither, so it's an L as a punk record.
When they're not retracing early Who, they're biting The Kinks but with less charisma. Having an actual Kinks cover on here sort of hangs a lampshade on this, but doesn't get them off the hook. If my strongest positive feelings about an album come from the times it reminds me of something else, I'd call that a miss.

Pretty good review, disagree but I can understand where you're coming from, not that I'm good at reviews myself.

They're not the most forward thinking band but they add their own spin to the mod style.
And Mods are really just punks who like parts of the past and like to wear suits and ride scooters to me, not much more exclusive or stuffy than most other punk scenes

Swans - Cop (1984)
In terms of raw power and harshness, this outclasses Filth considerably. The bass is still an important part of the songs, but not nearly as much as on Filth (they only had one dedicated bassist on this album, on Filth Gira played bass, here he just sings)
Just 40 minutes of beat down. Gira doesn't yell as much as he just groans. The percussion and bass grooves of Filth are Sly & The Family Stone compared to Cop.
3.0

Swans - Soundtracks For The Blind (1996)
>Post Rock
I had a real long review written out for this, probably would have taken at least two posts, one for each disc.
I deleted that on accident.
I like it, but it's too damn long, even when listening to each disc seperately (the first one is better, by the way).
4.0+

Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced (1967)
>Blues Rock, Psychedelic Rock
Yeah, it's Hendrix. He plays the guitar real good like and is one of the artists that's so seemingly overrated he loops back around into being underrated, because his influence cannot be overstated.
4.0+

La Monte Young - 31 VII 69 10:26 - 10:49 PM / 23 VIII 64 2:50:45 - 3:11 AM The Volga Delta (1969)
>Drone, Poseurcore
The recording on this is so much better than Dream Syndicate 1.
The music, however, isn't as good.
The first track is just Young and his wife exchanging some vocal drones over another drone for 20 minutes, which isn't really bad at all, and the second one is some very underwhelming instrumental drone/noise.

i mean the basis of their subculture is more just a continuation/respect of the early 'punks' of the 60s, going forward from the stagnation of rock and pop in the 70s by going backwards I guess. I don't care about fashion too much either though. Old mods riding about on scooters now is a big naff but i can respect the scene at the time

I like 60s mod a lot anyway though so I'm probably more sympathetic. And looks p interesting, might have a look myself.

been a great week lads. Candlemass was fucking great, now i feel like listening to more doom metal. Theo Parrish is the best house artist and Ebonics is the best song of all time, and My Sol Dark Direction is top, Suburban Knight really is one of the best. How about you guys, what have you been listening to?

that delroy face, i feel like revisiting that one, its so raw
>>
>>75609098
Yeah you're right, I'm just being a brat, cranky at mod for having a cool aesthetic but not really delivering on it.
need to explore 60s mod, defo a weak spot in my history.
moving forward by going backwards is a good line btw.

too raw, if you ask me. Can't comment on it since i took it out after some songs but i might relisten to it later. Overyohead is top 3, at least from that compilation. Any other good deep house musicians on his level? I'm not big on moodyman btw but i guess i can enjoy him sometimes.

Slav can be as good as it can be bad. I guess i just love how he plays with the drum set and stuff, and the song progression is masterful, he really is fucking amazing at it. Slav has more of that outsider, coolio fun vibes. You heard anything on LACR?

maybe not this, seems a bit unreasonable. I'd argue just listening to the originals isn't too much work though.
