OP here, My thoughts exactly.

About fucking time

I used to work in a grocery store, and I can't even begin to tell you how many people were on SNAP that clearly didn't need to be.

It was supposed to be a SUPPLEMENTAL program, but most people just use it for all of their food, and almost all of them are wearing brand new jordans and jewelry

wew lad, that's some ridiculous hyperbole. We spend about 75 billion on SNAP

Congress just approved an 80 billion dollar increase in military spending. So, I don't know wtf you're on about. We already spend too much on our military. If we cut it down to 2% of GDP, we could probably make Bernie's wildest dreams come true. Too bad no one has enough sense to do that, though

Luckily, only about 10% of such posts are from real people. The rest are from PR firms.

Good old tv news slave where rich people pay rich people to convince middle-class people to blame poor people.

Here's an idea jackass. Maybe take a look at the systems which force you to choose between being a liquor store robot or being homeless.

And I thought just 2 short years ago, the US was making progress politically. As in, most Americans I met and spoke with in many states mutually agreed "The government is shit, the two party system is flawed and fucked, it's time to try something new".

Yet here's someone advocating for money to the fucking Pentagon. For what? To line the pockets of Lockheed Martin?

and in a perfect world, we wouldnt need to get rid of these benefits. But because a huge chunk of the population likes to abuse it, then we need to now cut it.

the solution is not to just provide a mattress to the homeless

the solution is not to just give a mattress to the homeless guy. the solution is to get the homeless guy back on his feet so he can stop being homeless.

>The Rich=The Enemy
I agree with you in the sense that progressive policies are needed to bolster the stagnant wages of the middle class (and deficit funded tax cuts aren't the way to do it). However, I think it's dangerous and wrong to point fingers at the rich like their villains. Humans are at their core the same across all social spectrums, and while the rich are looking out for their interests and making up arguments to defend themselves (Good luck finding any research that suggests upper income tax cuts spur middle class income growth. Anecdotes about Thatcher and Reagan don't count), but so are people in the middle and lower class.

The rich are definitely thriving, but they still pay many times your share of taxes. If you pay a hundred times more than a poor person, and that money then goes to help feed said poor person, your vote doesn't count any more than the poor person's. With the current inequality in the nation, something certainly needs to change (probably dramatically), but that doesn't mean it needs to be done like we're storming the Bastille and rolling out guillotines. If the baby boomers finally die off and take the tea party with them to the grave, and bipartisan discussion becomes possible again, it will be better for the whole nation if Democrats are able to come to the table with their focus on solutions grounded in studied and effective policies, rather than raw populist anger. Angry right wing populism is proving to be a sham, I don't know why we should expect any different from angry left wing populism.
>>
>>187355
>Ending food stamps fucks everyone over except the ultra rich!!!

Nah it actually helps everyone because food stamps are essentially like feeding an animal in the zoo.
>>
Food stamps are a government subsidy to the food corporations and thus by extension the farmers. The only thing worse for the economy than someone not working is not eating.

You guys need to really think about what capitalism really is.
>>
>>185101
Ah yes, let's make people rely more on the whims of a corporate entity that could replace them with a machine at any time to cut labor costs. Surely that will ensure that the people who are losing their jobs will vote for you next election.
>>
>>187404
>huff *snort* fucking POORFAGS DONT EVEN HUMAN

Post your income tax returns faggot
>>
>>187412
Snap is guaranteed money in the pockets of retailers and farmers. Rich people paying less taxes means more investment in the economy, but since interest rates are so low doesn't that mean there's enough investment? I mean, if the "price" of money is super low, doesn't that mean supply is super high?

With wages stagnating, the middle class owners of grocery stores can certainly need the extra business more than the economy needs more investment. Regardless, even if there is some abuse of the system, there are millions of children whose meals are paid for with snap. If you're not eating enough, there's no way you're going to keep up with your peers in school. If you're hungry for several weeks, how do you avoid the temptation to steal food? Then the cycle of poverty repeats and the next generation of conservatives continues to bitch about the poor. If you're so convinced that forcing people into near starvation will liberate their minds so that they suddenly develop strong work ethic, then call snap a program to reduce shoplifting and increase farmer's wages.
>>
>>187399
It's funny because progressive politics are currently driving wages down or holding them stagnant though immigration. Remember anon adding to the work force lowers the value of labor. It is one of the most malicious things you can do to the working class.
>>
>>187426
No, the most malicious thing you can do to the middle and working class is not let them benefit from the last thirty years of economic growth. Funny how Reagan's tenure in office affects inequality.
http://www.epi.org/publication/charting-wage-stagnation/
Illegal immigration is every bit as much the fault of Republicans as Democrats. The numbers of immigrants coming across the border was comparable between Bush and Obama, and you can't reasonably claim that Obama was not tough on immigration.
>>
>>185112
>>187358
Something overlooked is the effect of SNAP on grocery prices. I used to live in a poor neighborhood where a large chunk of the residence were on food stamps. Grocery stores jack up prices because SNAP recipients can pay whatever the price is. But the people not on SNAP have to pay $3 For a dozen eggs and $4 for low quality bread. I moved out to a nicer neighborhood and the food prices are actually cheaper!
>>
I've had people come up to me at gas stations and make offers of shit like $10 of SNAP food for a pack of smokes.

And fuckloads of Mexicans in America are fat because of SNAP.

It's definitely being wasted. And meanwhile it's harder than hell for a senior on social security to get it.
>>
>>187420
It's called doing what's good for you in the long run, sweetie. Food stamps and hand outs create dependency.

>>
>>187609
Sounds like a plan.
>>
>>185101
You're already required to work 20 hours a week to get food stamps though. Is he increasing it or something?
>>
>>187607
Food stamps aren't synonymous with lazy anymore. Nowadays most states employ means-testing, so folks have to work to get any help affording basic needs. And dependence on food stamps has become essential for a much larger portion of the population since we have no protections with respect to minimum wage and weak anti-trust regulation. Walmart comes in to a town, puts everyone else out of business with artificially low prices, then once they're the only game in town they increase prices and undercut their employees with impunity. And they'll getting the lions share of tax cuts (in fact, many large businesses already get more money back from deductions). The richest and large corporations save a disproportionately large portion of their income or spend it on offshoring or mergers that lay thousands of people off and actually contract the economy as a whole but help them. Wages remain the same despite the fact that the stock market has been booming for almost a decade now. All that means is with increased productivity, executives see their compensation rise. Real wages for everyone else remain stagnant. The only solution is to raise taxes on businesses and the wealthiest and use the revenue to afford social mobility for the poor and middle class. Right now we're paying large corporations three or four times over for their products and services. The middle class pays once for their products, pays again shouldering what should be their tax burden, again to compensate for their lack of a living wage or in the case of extractive resource multinationals our children will pay for our subsidizing policies that fuck up our environment.
>>

Lol this guy doesn't know what a job is
>>
>>185101
Op Here. Im amazed that this thread is still going on. Thanks for all the replies
>>
>>187632
Since you mentioned Walmart, they're one of the companies that push their associates into using food stamps since they don't pay out a living wage in many areas.
>>
>>187633
In an ideal world, everyone would be able to get a jpb if they required one, and that job would pay a livable wage that conered food/shelter/health expenses/basic shit, but this is far from the case. What do you do if your job doesn't pay enough, or get laid off, can't find a job, lose it to Pajeet or Juan or some robot? According to most of the posters in this thread, you deserve to die if you can't get/hold down a job
>>
>>187704
Idk man life is hard. I trust in everyones ability to sort their life out as they see fit, or utilize their friends and family or church to assist them when times are tough.

Food stamps and welfare are Band-Aids. They do more harm than good. Best way is communal assistance and self reliance.
>>
>>187704
Social darwinism is the basis of capitalism, and why it has proved so successful in turning individual greed towards the purpose of uplifting humankind.
>>
>>187709
Does acting in self-interest always result in a net gain for society? We have companies bottling drinking water from communities who need it in order to make shitty diabetes-inducing drinks, because profit, yo. God knows how many millions are invested in retarded startups like that smart juicer from awhile back; it's hard to see how shit like that benefits mankind as a whole

>inb4 muh trickledown economics
>>
>>187707
>They do more harm than good.
To who exactly? Certainly not the folks who fall on hard times and need help getting out of a hole. Not children who are born to crappy parents and risk falling into generational poverty for lack of basic opportunities. Not people living in a knowledge economy who would be more willing to take creative risks if they felt they had some safety net if their business failed.

Self reliance is a nice talking point but it's just that. Large corporations always manage to privatize all their profits and socialize all their overhead and losses. It's bootstraps for everyone unless you're already rich in this country. Liberitarians love the police and the military, because they protect private property. Keep in mind, they love the military, not the soldiers. They couldn't give less of a shit about individual soliders. Dare to take a counter position and McCain becomes a crybaby who should be recalled by his state. Government is great while it's redistributing resources to protect claims to private property; the rich have lots of that. Government is broken, hopeless while it's protecting freedom in other ways, like by redistributing a share of resources from folks who won't miss it to where it makes a massive impact not just on quality of life but on social mobility.

Money loses value of it the more one has. Nobody's arguing against capitalism; everyone gets that capitalism is an essential foundation. But there is no ethical or practical argument for free market capitalism in any society with enough intelligence to include sensible protections for the working class and the environment.
>>
>>187730
>Does acting in self-interest always result in a net gain for society?
of course not, that's retarded.
The liberitarian worldview is fundamentally broken because it's utopian just like communism.

It fails to account for simple fact like one person's actions can impose a cost on another's. If I dump sewage into the stream you live by and your children have birth defects, too bad, sad day for you. Your only recourse is a lawsuit, so no preventative measures. Unless it's something like global warming because future generations won't even have the opportunity to file a class action lawsuit against their retarded ancestors.

It also fails because it takes an incredibly narrow view of what constitutes freedom. Private property is treated as an inalienable right, but they refuse to recognize freedom comes from many places; like access to utilities, transportation, food security and healthcare safety-net. All of these things can contribute to the overall freedom of members of a society.

What can we do to improve the program so people who actually need it can still use it and people that use it just to have more money for an iPhone get btfo'd?

Either basic income, so everybody gets something and nothing more, or have their purchases recorded for scrutinization. If somebody spends his SNAP on junk, then some sort of penalty could be in order.
>>
>>187799
A decent meal usually has 30 minutes of prep and 30 minutes of cooking time. Nobody wants to do that after 10-12 hours of work. You'll figure that out when you get a job.

People generally sleep 8-10 hours, which leaves maybe 1-3 hours of genuine free time. Depends how much the commute takes up.

It amazes me when people shit on welfare when their politicians are the world's biggest welfare recipients.

Think about it, when is the last time a politician has done anything worth several hundreds of thousands of dollars, plus kickbacks, plus bribes, plus free healthcare for life? All that for sitting in a seat in congress which they don't even have to show up for. Most politicians have horrible attendance rates.
