>A prominent lawyer who spent years fighting for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people set himself on fire Saturday.

>David S. Buckel's charred remains were found in a New York park, The New York Times reported. In a letter Buckel emailed to the publication and other media outlets earlier that day, he wrote, "Honorable purpose in life invites honorable purpose in death."

>A former marriage project director for Lambda Legal, a nonprofit organization that advocates for the rights of LGBT people, Buckel played a major role in a long, dark battle for recognition and equality.

>In one of his most noted cases, he represented the mother of Brandon Teena, a transgender man who had notified a Nebraska sheriff that he had been raped. The sheriff informed Teena's assailants who killed him in the days that followed. "It should not be the case that reporting a crime makes matters worse for you," Buckel told The Daily Nebraskan in 2001. Eventually the sheriff was found liable for failing to protect Teena and his brutal murder was dramatized in a film called Boys Don't Cry starring Hillary Swank.

What a flam-

Ehh, it's too easy. Not worth it.

Appreciate the gesture and salute the man for the balls he had to do this. But I can't help but think maybe he should have done it in front of the capitol building?
>>

I don't like the way the article was framed. He has extensive history as a gay rights lawyer, but why set that as the focus when the suicide was driven by his ecological pursuits? He was every bit a prominent environmental activist, and his last moments were dedicated towards an eco-protest. Come on, bruh.
>>
>my early death by fossil fuel reflects what we are doing to ourselves."

kek, witty. I have to give him that.

Identity politics trumps all in this age. "Environmental Activist Sets Himself on Fire" won't attract as many eyeballs as "Gay Rights Activist Sets Himself on Fire." It's a misleading headline that implies his self-immolation was related to his LGBT activism, but journalistic integrity is dead.

It's NPR. shit journalism is the norm

Drink lots of water, a little bit of exercise everyday, and stay out of the sun when it’s at its peak during the day and you will anon.

>setting-himself-on-fire-in-new-york-park

Even in death, he dedicated himself to being an irritating inconvenience to all those around him.
>>

He was a gay rights lawyer you fucking numbskull. His environmentalism does not change that fact. It’s like if Trump immolated himself and the headline read “Business man sets himself aflame”
>>
>>245875
Fairly certain it would read "President sets himself on fire", lest it was prior to 2016.

>On the last day of his life, he reportedly emphasized environmental responsibility, stating in a note to the media, "Pollution ravages our planet, oozing inhabitability via air, soil, water and weather. Most humans on the planet now breathe air made unhealthy by fossil fuels, and many die early deaths as a result — my early death by fossil fuel reflects what we are doing to ourselves."

NPR usually isn't one for click-bait headlines, left leaning or not, but yeah, "Environmentalist" woulda been more to the point, though I suppose it's not what he's famous for afterall.

>He was a gay rights lawyer you fucking numbskull.

Where did I say otherwise? But the article is about his death, not his life. He didn't kill himself over gay rights, so it's weird they focus so much on that.
>>
as we all know, people setting themselves on fire prevented vietnam. surely it will work this time too lol
>>
>>245841
What was the point of this? I'm sure he could have done more for the environment while alive rather than making headlines for a couple of days for a suicide.
What a waste of life
>>

Seems like the whole explanation is kind of fishy if you ask me. There were apparently few witnesses. They don't say where the note was found.
>>
No one cared when that mra guy set himself on fire in prorest.
