trying to get into cars, or atleast be more knowledgeable about them. when it comes to engines, what are the limiting factors behind the power they generate? number of pistons? Total combustion chamber size? max rpm while guessing what effect GVW has on the rpm delta/s? compression ratios? fuel type? engine, cam & combustion chamber stylings obviously important too. do engine mods like FAI really make that much more power?

I guess everyone all the time is trying to develop the best engine -- but how do you know which engines are better than others just based off the numbers? or do you just come to memorize or expect that an engine from a 1.5 ton 2L 4 cylinder WRX is just better (faster) than one from a 2 ton 4.6L 6 cylinder f150? like if you were to swap the two the f150 would smoke the wrx.

The thread is for Favorite engines, not necessarily the best. I've just spent the most time with the 6g series and the pretty wide use of applications for them. Supercharged, turbocharged, twincharged, mated to awd, smooth vvt, strong internals, bore out to 4.0. You can actually put optima heads on the 6g72 and 74 for DOHC but i haven't seen much on what gains that yields.

Good with a larger oil filter/increased oil capacity and frequent oil changes with good oil. Early ones are prone to sludge, but later iterations aren't immune. Did I mention they're picky with their oil and change intervals? Aside from the oil, they're excellent.

Diesels are ok for DDs for the reliability and fuel economy combined with the fuel price but don't fucking go saying any diesel ever would have good performance.

Interesting read.

By the mid-1950s, the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) had 220 normally scavenged and 22 supercharged Nordberg radial engines installed in its Port Lavaca, Texas aluminum plant. Combined, these engines could produce 475,000 hp (354,207 kW). The engines were arranged in seven powerhouses, consisting of around 40 engines each. Kaiser Aluminum used 80 Nordberg radial engines in its reduction plant in Chalmette, Louisiana, accounting for 150,000 hp (111,885 kW).

Pictured is the Rolls Royce PV-12 Merlin, a 27L 48 valve V12.

A variant of it was supercharged and installed in a Spitfire which made an attempt at the world record for speed. The engine made 2160 hp at 3200 RPM and 27 lbs of boost. It completed a 15 hour run at 1800 hp (3200 RPM and 22 lbs of boost) without failure.
>>
>>17885103
they're great for daily drivers though.
I just rode in my friends tuned E46 330d.
It pulls so fucking hard, it's literally faster than the E46 M3 on a straight line.
Also instant torque for easy passing, while you have to rev the shit out of n/a petrol engines with similar power
>>
>>17887416
Oh and on top of that it gets 7 liters per 100km average fuel mileage, which is about 33 mpg
