Ducati calls their V twins 'L twins' because they are tilted fowards at such a manner that the 90º V ends up forming an L. That's all that there is to it, but 'L' engines are merely V engines, my man.

This has probably been asked to death but I'm looking for a bike for commuting and want something other than a moped. Was originally leaning to a Grom because of the price and amount of fun I had doing literally anything on it but I've been told I can find a full size bike for a bit more.

I'm not rich. I'm working a min wage job living with my dad who won't help buy a bike which is alright. Just looking for something with decent financing (which I know nothing about).
Looking at Groms I've seen some with 30 a month for every 1000 financed so sub 5k sounds like something a poorfag 18 year old can afford.

pls help and teach me
>>

Gotta be something you won't mind droping too much, because it will happend.
Gotta be efficient, not too powerful, and most of all, cheap to fix.
That means no meme new bike on which the littlest of plastic frame will cost you 200 bucks once you've dropped it.
Also look for crash bars, better sage and ugly than sorry.

Also, I learned to ride on a 500. Just because it's a bigger engine doesn't mean it's difficult or any more dangerous as long as you have some common sense.
So if you can find a nice 250 don't be scared to get it.
>>
Why does everyone say 125ccs only do 50-60?

Mine personally does 65-70 on a straight long road on average and my friends more expensive 125ccs are faster at 70-80 on average.

Not even downhill by the way, but on fairly good conditions.

The 250/300/500 "sport" bikes have a good reputation for beginners and are typically cheap. I get that's not the style you're after but they are basically standards with sporty looking fairings, so you won't be crouched up like a real sport bike.

The Buell Blast and GS500 are also cheap learner bikes with a bit more power.

If you never leave the city and never need to go more than 50mph I reckon even the rebel would be fine.

The magic of Harley engineering.

I think they do that on purpose because if the Sportsters had decent HP, then that means that Harley would have to make the big twins have even better HP, or else the AARP motorcycle club would complain that their Ultra Classic is slower than a Sportster.

Regular Jeans: Not abrasion resistant at all. Equivalent to wearing no pants.

Kevlar Jeans: Better than nothing, but since they're jeans with limited protection zones they are not infallible. You will lose A LOT less skin than you would in Levi's but you will still lose some. Speaking from experience, lost some surface skin and ruined an otterbox. Some models have hip and knee armour, but they're jeans and not tight enough for this to be a factor imo. Armour would shift immediately in a crash. Draggin Jeans are amazing, but almost as expensive as overpants.

Textile overpants: Lots of protection, lots of options. You get better fabrics than denim/kevlar lining such as Cordura or fancy Nylon. Made to go OVER jeans or a mid layer in the winter and usually windproof/water resistant. These get pretty pricey but the trade-off is you can usually get away with using one pair for everything. Come in Gore-Tex (mmmmmm goretex) My recommendation: Olympia Airglide 3.

Leather chaps: Arguably more abrasion protection than textile overpants, but you kinda look funny and/or like a cruiser jockey or old-timey cowboy. Leather doesn't breathe in the summer and the denim/leather layers will make you really hot and really sweaty.

Leather pants: "Pants" may not be the right word but I'm rolling with it. Generally these come in the very tight, pre-curved and fully armoured variety. Able to attach to a jacket with a 270* zipper, useful for spirited or track riding and not much else. Walking in these is hell.

You 'could' learn how to drive in a ferrari f40 too, it's just stupid. 650 class bikes aren't as slow and boring as a 250 and if you have prior experience with dirtbikes they're a good choice because you won't get bored as fast. A 250 is great if you have no prior experience and are literally learning how to use a clutch for the first time in your life, along with all the other mechanics of riding.

They aren't slow, but every ptwin 650-ish bike barring the FZ07 is a shaky lump of unrefined shit. I had a ninja 650 for a week and a half and was about to quit bikes until I decided to start ignoring the internet and get a 600. I put a grand total of 20 miles on it.

The SV650 is alright but you really don't have to get one

Also the CBR650F is dumb. I felt like an idiot taking fairings off the ninja 650 to change the oil when it's not even an actual sportbike. A budget CBR that's lower tech than its predecessors doesn't seem that different.

OK this video has confused me even more.

Out of the 2 main bikes I've been looking at, one's maximum hp is at 9000rpm and the other is 13500rpm. So one is much torquier and the other will mean I have to race it like a sports bike to get the most power out of it, and by that point it will be over twice the speed limit.

Anyone here with a supersports? Justify your purchase for commuting/touring if you don't race on tracks.

THE ANSWER
Go to your local bank or credit union, ask if you're eligible for a $3,000 personal loan. Pick the lowest possible monthly and overpay that bitch by about 150%. Then go on Craigslist and search for sv650's or sfv650's. There are loads on there in my area for 2-3 grand so you should have enough left over for gear. Mine was an 09 with 9k miles for $2,400.
Do NOT get a Grom
Do NOT get any 250 besides a dualsport
Do NOT under any circumstances get a gs500 or a fucking katana.
You will outgrow any of these bikes fast and hate that you committed to it. The sv is the perfect beginner bike for learning to ride and building credit, case closed.

Bad decision indeed. Should have just kept going until a good opportunity arose. damn anon you need to ride a little more carefully
anyway the clutch lever would be easy to replace and you could repair it for a temporary fix
the wheel being bent (i suppose you mean the steering is twisted from center position) pull the forks off and check them for straightness. if they seem straight it might just be the steering clamps twisted and they will come good after reassembly which is common after even minor crashes.
the handlebars could be bent back to approximately straight or should be cheap to replace with some substitute
helmet must be replaced

you can do either really just look at the rules book for a foundation but also consider the unwritten road rules you will only pick up from experience with driving. a car is only superior because you can get feedback/instruction from your passenger and accidents won't be as severe
>>
>>18210959
Thank you. Moving the handlebars back a little is one good idea, and I'll buy a cheap replacement clutch.

The wheel thing has been an issue since I got the bike, its never properly aligned with the handlebars and I've often had to hold the wheel between my legs and move it around. Something isn't right but I'm not technical enough to fix it.

Your suggestions helped though btw

How do you people with old bikes know when you're running out of gas?

No odometer and I can't see inside my gas tank. Ran out at a red light like an asshole and the engine never skipped a beat prior to that so how am I supposed to know?

Shine a light inside your tank, you could also knock the side and listen to the splashes.

Honestly mate I did shake it before I left that day and a little splashed up by the filler hole so I assumed I was alright but I didn't make it 3 miles before I ran out

Set your trip every time, you'll find out how many km you can usually get before it empties.
>>
>>18211292
>fill tank
>set trip
>ride 100 miles
>refill tank
>divide 100 by the amount of gas it took to refill it
>multiply that number by your tank size
>this is now your range
It's not that fucking hard.

Always leave your fuel tap to ON instead of RES so you have a litre or two to make a station.
