I used to get bad rotor warp when my rear brakes fucked off for a while, so that's a possibility

Also this only works on 1st gen tacomas, but there's a brake upgrade that you can easily do to convert to Tundra brakes. But again that's only for 1st gen tacos

Discluding my personal labour costs, which I invoiced myself for $0, all in I was out of pocket $891. That's 2nd hand crank, machining, ACL bearings, seals, clutch blah blah and a few tools.
The cheapest quote I had was $1300 and that was to drop off the engine and I'd still have to hire a crane, not including any parts that needed replacing while it was open. $2000 drive in, drive out was also the average.

However, that 1300/2k was a 2 day turnaround, parts dependent, whereas it took me 3 weeks largely by myself. Broke and took a gamble, kinda worked lol.

I bet it felt good after having half your fluids/grease replaced though, peace of mind.

I’m doing the opposite of off-road right now. I’m putting Frontier lift blocks in my XTerra (fronty’s spring over axle, X is spring under axle) so the rear will go down 1.5”.
Why?
Less road noise on the freeway, slightly better handling and mpg, curiosity.

Sad part was when I went to Vatozone up the road for a new one. I plopped it down on the counter and joked "My car wont start I think it might be the Battery..."

Norwegians, or atleast the ones born in after the war, speak quite decent english. Most will have the typical swedish accent you often hear in movies and shows, with varying degrees of how sttong the accent is

Still, I'd humble brag and say that my english is a good bit better than the normal norwegian, to the point where I no longer have the accent, sounding more like a non-distinct american. The language has always just come sorta easy to me

Staang's Fab in Dundas or Rock Spyder4x4 in Markham will give you ok prices. $1500 for a basic front bumper with winch plate and you get that side protection as well. Light guards are just a few hundred extra and you might be able to get them to do a bash plate addition too.

If you're lucky, RS 4x4 might have pre-made 4runner ones they can get right in from the US for under $2k. They're one of the certified ARB dealers here.

Do it now since winter is when they get less clients.

I have around 7k to buy my first car. I don't know anything about cars so it needs to be somewhat reliable. Mostly for daily driving to school and gym but probably a road trip every other month.

Is a subaru or a xterra better for what I want?
>>
>>18511333
Yes. Loads. Especially people with no access or know-how to manipulate and accurately measure steel. Plus having a bumper that's bent sewn well is a huge benefit, too.

Also rarely discussed- homemade bumpers are hard to build with the airbag sensors in mind unlike fabricators that give you the option if it's premade or in house specialty designed.

Especially for the person we're responding to:
>cheaping out on a front bumper on a 2016 4runner costing more than $40k

>>18511348
Subaru gas mileage would save you a grand or few every year. Xterra, 4runner, explorer would all take up quite a lot if you don't need that towing capacity and higher ground clearance.
>>
>>18511358
Sweet thanks anon, would you say there both fairly reliable cars?
>>
>>18511367
Yes. You're posting on an offroad general so people will jump to say subaru offroading is not real offroading. They're kinda right in that regard but your daily shouldn't be able to do giant flexes and bog mudding. Plus if you're going to school, gym, and once a month road trips, gas mileage is a legitimate concern.

The Subraru will probably save you 30-50% gas if you're commuting innacity with it. Just don't lift it and damage the car's suspension. A $150 come-along will be your best friend, too.
>>
>>18511377
Thanks anon, I really appreciate your response.

I'm not sure how much off roading I'll be doing but I like these cars for whatever reason.

How much would it cost to cheaply fit a hydraulic pump so I can use a hydraulic winch in my truck? I think the 6.0 tow trucks have them but they're like $4000 from Ford.

Are there good aftermarket ones available to wrap around the belt? If it's more than $2000, I'll just stick with the electric winch.

Start looking for some 1 ton axles, Dana 60 balljoint front and 10.25" sterling rear. Can get a set for less then 1000, just shop around on Craigslist. My buddy got his pair of ford 1 ton axles for 400 bucks. Just have to find the right seller. The 10.25" rears are cheap, like 100-200 dollar cheap, the Dana 60 is the more pricy axle, but if you go with a standard ball joint Dana 60 they'll be cheaper. I prefer the kingpin style, but the ball joint ones have massive ball joints so they are still a huge upgrade over 1/2 ton axles. Then regear and lockers and slap them under the truck, may have to make a custom 3 link for the front to make the Dana 60 work.

Another option if you don't want to run larger then 35" tires is 9" rear and Dana 44 front from an older full size bronco or F-150 which should be pretty much bolt on under your bronco. Just regear those axles to 4.56 or 4.88s with some lunchbox lockers and you're set. I'd recommend chromoly front shafts and quality Dana spicer solid core u joints while you're at it.

Unfortunately there is no cheap way to build up 4wd vehicles, at least doing it right. But you can buy the axles then slowly clean them up and gear them in the spare time while you use the bronco in its current setup. Then throw the axles under in a weekend when they're ready.

Thanks for the advice. I found a 3.55 rear end at a junk yard, $250 pulled. The truck they're pulling it from is a 95 F150, with 76k miles. That should be enough to at least let me toy around in the summer.

I probably won't get any bigger than 35" tires, though. As cool as 37's would be, reminds me of HMMWV's.
>>
>>18526276
What front axle does your bronco have currently?
>>
>>18526311
Dana 44 TTB
>>
>>18526361
Just regear the axles you have, after replacing the rear then. Also replace the stock u joints with the Dana spicer solid 760s I believe is the number for the Dana 44 and Dana 30 joints. With 4.56s the truck will feel much better on and off road.

I don't care for you or your posts at all. I don't want you to go away, just wish you wouldn't post unless you're accomplishing something off road.

Oh god no, I'm not absolutely made of money
Mudflaps for when I fit 35's (stock ones are too narrow, plus I'm missing two of them after a really shitty ride through a forest to rescue a broken down ATV), and a 15-ton ARB snatch strap

I did order myself a set of flares in ABS the other day tho. At half the price of fibreglass I hope they'll be ok

>>18535749
The ABS plastic should be more resilient compared to the fiberglass when it comes to hitting branches and such.

As long as they're properly made, which I hope they are

I dunno, a set of model-specific flares for 1500 NOK/190 USD isn't a bad deal as long as the quality is passable

Getting closer and closer to the dream

Sikkk recovery kit brah. Now you just have to actually go off road and maybe move beyond LARPing as rescue ranger 1.

I know exactly what it is, as gay as Tacoma is for a truck name, hilux is even gayer. They both basically look the same body wise, which is ugly as sin

Toyota has often had somewhat weird names, I will agree

I prefer the cleaner/sleaker front of the HiLux, and the taller mirrors
>>
>>18536329
they sure knew how to make square cars. too bad crash regulations forced them to make these things fucking hideous

i do agree, though. the hilux is a lot more natural looking than the forced tacoma grill. hilux looks like the front belongs on an audi, actually.

The funniest thing about that truck, or the Navara/Kinc Cab/NP300 as we called it, was that all of its big sales point versus the Hilux were the things that didnt hold up

>30 more hp
Engines are legendarily unreliable, with a main crank bearing that would often grenade engines before 60 000 miles/100 000km
>660 pounds heavier payload
Frames are snapping at the rear and cracking all over due to poor rust protection, too thin steel and general weak construction. This problem even persisted to the D40, abd the Pathfinder based on the same frame
>air condition was much cheaper
A large portion started leaking after three years. Shorts were common
