I had a miata once.
Thought it would fill the hole in my heart after some asshole totalled my AW11.
It didnt.
It wasnt as comfy or as fun. Not trying to start a shitposting war. I had it for less than a year and sold it for a mazda pickup. Its comfy. I love mazda. But will always miss my 80s toyotas.

>>
>>18954952
The weight difference is slight, the higher performance of the NB is obvious
>>
>>18957487
>na 1.8 vs nb 1.8
>75kg difference
It's a lot, it's as much as extra passenger. Just now i've tested this racechrono app, and so i've tried lapping the track with passenger and without one - i was losing almost entire second with passenger in seat. I own NB and i love it, but weight difference seems to be pretty serious and could possibly affect times in comparison.

let it be said that i could also be wrong since i've never tried out NA, nor i saw any races with two of those. i don't want to start benchracing war in this relatively non-cancerous thread, i just think that stock na might not be as 'inferior' as one could think
>>
>>18957764
Not sure where you're getting those numbers from but official Mazda info says the 97 NA is actually heavier than the 1999 NB1, and the NB makes 10 more hp.
I know the 1994 models are the lightest 1.8 L NAs, maybe that would be a closer race. Just speculation tho, the only way to really tell is to do some hot laps back to back.
Honestly it's so close it's negligible. Put any decent tire on one (1.8 NA or NB) and it would kick the others ass
>>

there are so many factors when it comes to insurance. This is a dumb thing to be surprised about.

Usage characteristics are more or less the same. I just figured that since it's a "sports car", insurance company will assume I'm going to hoon it and thus more likely to put it through a strip mall front window.

Pretty sure it is a lockout so brainlets don't accidentally shift into reverse going 90mph on the highway. My shitbox mazda3 does the same thing. At least i tell myself it is a lockout and not something horribly wrong with my car.

>>
>>18961516

>>
>>18957276
The dual mass flywheel is to reduce NVH. And apparently the car is going to have more electronic nannies, like a pedestrian safety system that will probably function as poorly as the garbage BLIS system in the ND1 does and cause the car to continually hit the brakes. Hopefully you'll be able to toggle it permanently off, like you can with the BLIS. The engine changes that they're supposedly introducing are basically the BBR 200 kit with a less aggressive tune. I'd rather get a ND1 with less bullshit than wait for a ND2 that's possibly been fucked up.
>>18958268
Skyactiv-X will be ND3 or NE
>>
>>18961424
>>18961891
this happens in my 6 speed NB as well. the reverse lights turn off once I bring the clutch to the engagement point, and it just revs. no strange sounds or crunching either. apparently when this happens, you are putting the shifter in a small space between 6th gear and reverse. double clutching from neutral seems to make it happen less often, but it still occurs every once in a while. not sure if there is any way to fix this.

>>
>>18962715
The Z3 will be marginally more enjoyable and exponentially more expensive.
>>
>>18962266
Ragtop makes a lot of noise, especially when it is cold and windy. I would reccomend getting a hardtop for it if you buy one.
>>
In a car as slow as the miata, does rwd really make much of a difference when it comes to handling? I've never driven rwd before.
>>
>>18962266
your soft top will most likely die after couple years if you'll use it all year long. other than that, there are no issues, miata is very warm so it's all fine

>>18962875

Hi /mg/ I haff question
Currently running 195/50/r16s on my nb
Front tires are touring all seasons but still have 80% tread while rears are bald, trying to deciding if I should:
Just get the matching all seasons on all 4
OR
Get 205 width performance summer tires on the rear only and stick with the tires I have on the front

Obviously it would be better to get the performance tires on all 4 but that sets me back a fair chunk, plus I got quoted for about the same price whether I match the old tires or get new fatter ones so I'm wondering if mixing the two would be detrimental to just having matching all seasons

Also read that 205s don't really do much for the handling or ride on miatas, can anyone attest to this?
>>
>>18963379
Nice, I'll get one but there don't seem to be any that fit the stock shock tower brace. Should I just get that Flyin' Miata kit?
>>
>>18963394

>>18963772
Sell the tires to some beaners for $40. Buy new tires. Don't get all seasons. If you are cheap just get General Tires. They are like $60 each in that size.
>>
>>18963802
>>18963860
I believe my rim width is 7 inches on 16 inch wheels, they're enkei j10s. Do you think I should opt for 195 or 205 tires then?
>>
>>18964135
205 is ideal for 7". go get them if you want, though i agree with other anon and you should just save more money to get a set of four proper summer tyres. difference between shitty all-year tyres and proper sports ones is like night and day, and if you enjoy going fast, you gonna want some front end grip as well

I was in this boat last weekend, bought pic related without ever having driven a manual car before. Had a friend go along to test drive it. Besides looking like a retard for not driving the car I bought, it went pretty well. Gotten to the point where I at least don't stall starting from a stop, after practicing for about 30 minutes each night since then. Basically, wouldn't let not knowing how to drive stick stop you from buying a miata.

Though at the same time it's not my only car, so I can learn at a slow pace while still being able to drive my automatic shitbox to work and whatnot.

I see now you have no friends to help with the test drive (should read the thread more carefully next time). It's a bit more tricky then since I personally wouldn't buy a car without knowing it drives more or less correctly. Maybe ask the seller to drive you around in it. Who knows, they might even be willing to give you a basic lesson.

To be honest, i think we all kinda did that at some point in our lives. Buying your first car is pretty much buying it without being able to test drive it - yes, you can drive it around, but you won't be able to feel if there is something wrong unless it's really huge problem. I'd say getting a car based on opinion of someone trusted and more experienced (and after checking it with mechanic) is not a bad idea at all.

>Gotten to the point where I at least don't stall starting from a stop, after practicing for about 30 minutes each night since then
>I can learn at a slow pace
Don't, there is no point. My country is all manual and we have mandatory 30 hours of driving lessons in a car, usually people get good enough to drive in city properly after 5-10h. So, I think you should spend your weekend on driving it all day long, and then you will surely be able to start taking it to work without too much stress. When you'll start using it daily, you will grasp it all in no time.

i meant "don't learn at slow pace". obviously, trying out whenever you have time is good idea, i just think there is no point in waiting when you can get good enough in a day or two and start practicing on daily basis while enjoying your daily commute.

Yeah, makes quite a bit of sense. I'd learn much quicker if I drove around for a few hours. Guess I just wanted to get a little more comfortable with it first. Thanks anon, I'll start driving it more

why dont you google some videos on this and find out?

you dont need a torque wrench for aluminum stuff, just never go above 20 ft lb. you should know that by hand.

Nigga, save yourself a lot of trouble and remove the valve cover. Throwing that thing back in with a viton o ring is practically impossible, in my experience with the 1.8. It's way easier to put the whole thing together and then just screw the valve cover back in.
You can get a torque wrench for like $20 on amazon mate, if you don't want to spend it, turn each bolt on the valve cover till it tightens up (in sequence), then give it 3/4 of a turn

Which miata should I get and how expansive are the mods... For example new springs, brakes or even a turbo.

I know nothing about cars but I like to drive and went to a few trackdays but only as a passanger.
>>
>>18977187
get any na/nb, worry about other stuff later. miata is cheap, parts are cheap, upgrades are cheap.

Well, if you intend to use it on track day, you can look for NB with bigger brakes up front. Those brakes aren't bad at all, so lot of time will pass until you'll start pushing it hard enough to need any brake upgrade from miata sports brakes. That being said, even stock brakes will be enough for starters, so don't worry if you won't find any sports brakes offer. I'm taking my stock miata with small brakes on the track and it stays alive, my main problem now is bit of fade from shitty brake pads.

If you'll find 1.8 NB with torsen (i think every 1.8 is with torsen, isn't it?) and sports packages (suspension, brakes), it will be amazing car ready for any kind of track abuse you want. If you won't find this kind of offer, any other kind of miata will be alright as well.

>>
>>18977232
>i think every 1.8 is with torsen, isn't it?
nope, some have open diff. you can use the vin to call up mazda and tell you if the car has the diff. with the NA 1.8s you could tell if they had the popular equipment package (power mirrors, cruise control, tan interior, headrest speakers) which included the torsen diff. NBs minght have something similar though, idk.
>>18977187
He's right about everything else though, as a begginer these cars stock have a higher limit than you can manage. Get good at driving while stock, and when you hit a wall start upgrading. I'd say the minimum you should do is tires, and basic maintenance for a start. For a start do blank rotors, pads, decent DOT4 brake fluid, tranny fluid (Redline MTL or the motorcraft equivalent, make sure it's GL4 and not GL5), diff fluid (Redline 75w-90), and engine oil. Check to see if the shocks are good too, blown shocks can really limit you even as a novice. If you do that, you can have a real solid beginner track car.

I can tell you it's a 1.6 engine because of how the intake piping dips down at the front of the bay. I can't tell the difference in turb-, er, alternators from such a pic.

1.6L has a V-belt, 1.8's belts are 4-ribbed - easiest way to tell.

Word. Good luck.

It *appears* that that's a 1.6L alternator because the pulley doesn't dip in around the nut. Problem is, to run the V-belt you have to have the 1.6L versions of all the other pulleys... which would kinda imply that you got a 1.6L and the seller lied. Just look on the crank pulley to see if the rear part is one 'vee' or 4-ribs. Also, post a general engine bay pic if you could, that's some weird shit.

I actually had no idea they had different belt types 'til you asked; and I've been living the mx-5 life for 10 years.

If Mazda had a stupidly high budget to reduce weight even further with things like carbon fiber bodies, how much could they shave off?
>>
>>18979677
off an ND? Maybe 150Kg if they go full carbon fibre tub, magnesium wheels, no sound insulation, no top at all, manual everything.
>>
>>18979677
stuff like carbon hood weighs ~15kg less compared to normal part. usually people are able to strip off ~100-150kg from miata without this kind of stuff, so i'd say 800kg miata could probably be possible

there is mx-5 nc superlight that has alu hood (and maybe other body parts), it weighs 150kg less than full version and has no windshield.
>>
>>18968240
>mazda
>electric
>>
>>18979690
The NE may have a carbon tub and lots of other weight-saving goodies, as Mazda is working on more affordable CF. That would let them put smaller engines into the car, and smaller wheels, smaller brakes, etc.
>>18979939
On the ND a carbon hood barely weighs 3kg less. The OEM hood is 9kg, and the full-carbon one that you can get is around 6kg. There's really little weight savings to be gained on the ND by replacing body parts. You need to go for shit like LiPo batteries, lightweight brakes, replacing the soft top with a hard top, lightweight exhaust, Tillet B5 seats, and lightweight 16" wheels. And even then you're barely going to save 50kg, and to save more you have to start stripping it out and get a little esoteric with shit like lightweight pulleys.
The ND is a little miracle on wheels.

Ahh so that's where the blasted thing is. There's a plastic cover over that part of the cowl and I did notice that there was a lot of junk stuck below it. I'm gonna give it a good clean then.

Is it worth the extra cost, decreased storage capacity, decreased fuel economy, and increased wind noise with the top down?

It does look very nice though.

No idea, i don't own one. Just saying that with $30k to burn i would get an RF for its looks. That being said, cammed ND (your 200 kit includes cams) will most likely have worse fuel economy than anything else in your choice list.

to be honest i would get gt86, but i shouldn't spew this kind of heresy in miata general

How do I stop wanting a miata? I can’t afford one and already have a car that runs.
>>
>>18984489
Surrender. I'm a poor student and i've got one anyways - i lost all of my savings, sold some shit, sold my previous shitbox, and now i couldn't be happier. I still have minor money problems, mostly because i spend everything on fuel/parts/track, but even eating rice all week long (but with miata to drive around) is great.

plus it's very low-maintenance car, so it probably won't hit you as hard as you think
>>
>>18984489
Buy one. Drive it until you can't stand hearing all your friends calling you a faggot. Then wreck it for the insurance money.

The 1st rev ND transmission in the Club will fucking explode if you bump up the torque, might explode if you don't, and Mazda may void the warranty on that part if you've done hella sick mawdz. I would not buy any ND manufactured before Sept 2016. There's some fucky combo of bad metallurgy, the LSD, and extra stress being put on 3rd that causes the 1st rev tranny to shit itself. They may have fixed it with the second and third rev tranny's, but only time will tell.

The RF is sexy but the extra weight up top compomises handling ever so slightly, and it's kinda too noisy with the roof down. Still, it's one of the best looking cars on the road today and you'll get a lot of positive attention.

A clean NA with $20K to play with would be incredibly tempting. But ultimately I'd go for the RF. I kinda want to get a ND2 RF to go along with my ND ragtop, but that would be silly.

5 speeds have this issue as well.
both this and the slight whine are a result of two things
the whine is due to the fact that the reverse gear is a straight cut gear as opposed to a smoother engaging helical gear
the reason it sometimes doesn’t go in is because it has no synchronizer on it
>>
>>18985944
All reverse gears in every car are straight cut and unsynchronized
>>
>>18985944
i think they mean situation where lever moves, but gear does not engage, not situation where lever won't move. lever not moving is normal, lever moving but gear not "clicking in" like >>18979631 is wrong
>>

Thinking of buying a cheap 1.6 as a first car, have lots of free time and a desire to learn basic car mechanics, unlike the rest of my family who all just run new cars and rely on garages for everything.

Is there a resource you guys use that details exactly what and where every little component from the tiniest wire to the largest bolt is located, and the process of getting to those components, removing them and replacing them?

Thanks!!

Get a haynes manual, and go on the miata.net garage section for almost everything else. Very specific things might need you to go on forums
>>
>>18989973
>resource
google. don't worry. you don't need full car documentation to replace brake pads or something. older cars are designed in a way so anyone can work on them, you don't really need books just to do basic stuff.

If you still can't figure it out you could get an alldata subscription or find a service manual

should i just ditch these fucking 16" shurikens and go for the more "standard" miata 15x8 size?
>>
>>18990619
>15
yeah, sure, if you feel li-
>x8
will it even fit? afaik 15x6 was stock size, and most of the fast-oriented miatas use 15x7
>>
>>18990662
i believe 15x8 fits although it's rather close, i have heard much hubbub surrounding that size on miats
but i'll look into 15x7 and 15x6 as well. What's annoying is that finding some stock wheels in 4x100 bolt pattern is kind of hard. it's like miata, some minis, honda civic
>>
>>18990619
If you have the sport brakes, make sure to check for clearance before you go to 15s. x8s on the NB shouldn't rub, if you get a +25 offset or more, and run a 205-50.
>>
>>18990757
oh fuck i forgot, i do indeed have the sport brakes, and if i went for some kind of brembo-ish setup in the future, it'd most likely not enjoy 15 inches, hmmmmmmmmmm
>>
>>18990768
oh wait nevermind most of those kits are fine on 15s as are most wheels on the sport brakes

These are 15x8 +25 Advanti Storm S1 with 205/50 ZII Star Specs. Fits perfectly at proper ride heights with a fender roll on an NA. NBs can run 15x9 225 rather easily.

ive been looking for a hard top in utah for about 6 months now and holy shit they are fucking rare. At this point im about to say fuck it and shill out and have one shippend to me, I found this one https://www.mobbmotorsports.com/ShoppingCart.asp? but that still looks like way to much. Does anyone have any links or anything to find a hard top that isn't going to break the bank, that is in the area ish? also ive already checked ksl, CL, any and all fb miata groups I could join or look at and the marketplace. ive even been calling pick and pull and all the local scrap yards weekly asking if they have any miatas and I think the recepionst is starting to reconise my voice.

My 15x7.5 +35 offsets rub the fender liner fasteners at full/bumpstop on the front. Not keen on a roll at this point. The ZII's were great on stock daisies. Crazy how much sidewall flex there is with /60 versus /50 though.

Hard tops are like £300 in the UK, maybe it's worth shipping them from here? Hardtops are retardedly expensive in the US
>>
>>18991893
hardtops are huge, but it could possibly work as a bulk purchase
>>
>>18991901
You'd need to get some sort of wood crate made for the thing if you want any chance of it arriving in on piece, and that shit + size + weight means you might be looking at $3-400 just in shipping
>>
Is it normal for my fuel gauge in a 1993 NA to not fall back to empty when I turn off the ignition?
>>
>>18992690
yea it's not digital
>>
>>18991907
still probably cheaper than buying one in the states
>>
>>18993275
maybe, but also take into account oou'd either have to go to the UK or have some broker buy the top, package it, and ship it. Maybe if you have some friends or family there it could work out
