one really fucking smart thing car manfs did is to make cars really techy so that cars even a couple years old have obvious downsides to them compared to the new models

kids wont remember how a model could be largely unchanged for years, I mean a 93 and a 96 in a lot of models was just cosmetically different

I don't understand how people my age manage to afford the cars that they do. At the age of 23, I feel like people should be saving as much as they possibly can to put toward a house deposit or something. I drive a shitbox, only have $40k in the bank, and still feel like I need to pinch pennies to make ends meet... can't even fathom how young people making the same wage manage to justify a $900 monthly car payment, inner city rent, and new gaming consoles every two years. Do they eat nothing but rice? Do they pay for everything with a worryingly increasing credit card debt? I don't get it.

You can blame the boomers and every generation that came after them.
Debt is good, don't worry about it, 0% interest and low down payments, buy now, pay later!
Debt culture drives this country now. It is a societal expectation that you drive a new car, bought with the bank's money or, even worse, financed with the dealer itself. If you drive used, it has connotations of being 'too poor'. The only people who drive used are seen as being those who have bad credit scores and can't get a loan for a new car. It's expected of you to toil for 20, 30 years to pay off half a million dollars or more of dozens of different loans while 'living the good life'. If you're not drowning in debt, you're not living right, in the eyes of most Americans. You're poor, and weird, and probably don't have any fun with your life. After all, almost anyone can get a credit card nowadays. Why not splurge and make yourself happy with mindless consumerism?
We have raised multiple generations of Cereal Aisle kids who have never been told no, who have never been taught temperance and self control, who have no idea what fiscally responsible behavior is, and who probably think that Social Security is anything more than Alpo money.
What's worse is the people who'll claim they're 'responsible' with credit cards and 'pay them off every month'. Or that they 'only' took out a 30k loan for their brand new commutermobile shows that they're responsible. These are the ones who normalize and rationalize debt culture, who know there's an alternative but are still too irresponsible to accept the idea that they might have to live without new cars and little gadgets if they want to have a net worth that isn't in the negative.
>inb4 angry dealership salesmen trying to justify and rationalize 40,000 dollar car loans for people who make 30k in a year

t. Drives a shitbox
>>
>>19841589
Yes, and? I'd rather drive a shitbox and have enough money that I can invest in my retirement and my emergency fund, than spend my life teetering on the edge juggling a dozen different monthly payments, with no budget, with my emergency plan being 'shove everything off onto credit cards and hope it doesn't come back to bite me in the ass down the line'.
Debt is dumb, and so are you.
>>
>>19841601
Or you can get a job and get something nice
>>
>>19841601
Despite what anyone else says you have the right idea.

I work for an organisation that helps manage people's debts. You have those caught out by illness, sudden redundancy, death of main breadwinner etc but the most common reason is simply bad budgeting and a careless attitude to debt and wanting the best of everything. Cut your cloth accordingly I was taught when I was younger but these people get angry when you suggest they don't have the newest phone on an expensive plan, unlimited internet, entertainment packages and holidays. You signed a contract to repay the money you borrowed so don't get pissed when the bank comes knocking.

I was just having a conversation with a fellow milennial coworker about this yesterday.

He was giving me shit because I typically stay two hours after my 6 hour shift ends because those two extra hours each day completely pay for my car and insurance bills.

He then immediately jumps to complaining about how he has to plan a week in advance if he wants to go get food in downtown or go to the beach and has to be fully rested before setting out because it involves a lot of walking, buses and trains he had to account for and plan around.

Meanwhile it takes me about 25 minutes to just fucking drive to the beach and $4 in parking. His sister then showed up to take him home and started giving him shit because he was afraid to drive his dads 2003 Ram to meet a girl for a date because it's old and doesn't have bluetooth and instead walked 6 miles in 90 degree weather and showed up sweaty, smelling like vinegar and dairy.

I'm in the process of ditching my current car and buying a CPO 5 series diesel for $23,000 whch gets 30mpg and he legit got mad at me for not just buying a new hybrid. He doesn't building a new car will damage the environment more than just buying a car that already exists.

He looked up a fucking Pacifica that he thought i should get instead and was trying to convince me that 10% APR on a 6 year loan on a fucking $39,000 car was smarter overall transaction than paying off the diesel 5 series within 1 years. Because my monthly payments would be less.

The only millenials i know that are into cars are two lesbians who are obsessed with Ram/Subaru shit, this Mexican dude who sold us our Sprinters and makes the commercials for Mercedes, and our legit autistic Indian IT guy; and all the white Numale millenials at work mock them for it.

I don't even blame boomers for hating millenials at this point.

Gen X was basically Boomers 2, Electric boogaloo. they are just as entitled and just as worldly as boomers except they do understand how their greed affects other people but they don't give a shit

You can always tell the difference between Gen Ys raised by young Gen X (full of themselves, no self control, live paycheck to paycheck and seriously believe they are owed more just for being themselves, defines themselves by their hobbies)
and raised by old Gen Boomer parents who were over giving a shit about their kids (depressed, feel like they are greedy if they ever ask for something even when they are owed it like overtime pay, finds meaning through hobbies and passions but hides them)

The issue comes from nobody going down market, if a company wanted to sell a "fun car" make cheap car with rwd, solid engine, and no creature comforts, and get some celebrity to advertise it. It would sell like hot cakes. It's a self fulfilling prophecy. Market cuckovers and you'll only sell cuckovers. It's the fact that boomers area only appealing to themselves and a short term profit opposed to a long term consumer base of younger people.

I could buy a fucking nice NA Miata for 5k, blow $15-20K on a complete rebuild, repaint, forced induction and cosmetics (This is paying someone else to do it), and end up with a nicer, more unique, faster and all around better car for half the price and not get fucked over with depreciation.

New cars are a fucking joke, anyone who buys them is wasting their money. Unless you're mega rich and can afford the loss of owning a new car, don't do it.

I agree with you, a car is not and should not be bought just as monetary investment. But in your original statement, you promoted new cars on the basis that you saved money from less required maintenance, increased gas mileage, and the ability to regularly serve Uber / Lyft.

Any savings you might get from a new car will certainly be negated by the average new car depreciation of $20,000 over five years.

If you want a new car for safety, speed, features, then go ahead. But don't delude yourself into thinking you'll be saving yourself money.

A 2018 is like 20k max. Mind you, there are plenty of better used cars for that money out there, but for NPCs that want something fun and cant into getting their hands dirty, its a good fit.

There's a lot of good used cars out there, but a lot of people dont have the time or knowledge to fix their car when it shits itself, esp if its their daily. Its also psychological too, you feel bad taking your 03 Neon to a mechanic and paying 1k on a 2k car, even if its a margin of what you'd pay on a new, reliable car.

Torque steer on the 1.5l FWD escape was noticeable, couldn't tell on the FWD edge.

At our budget we get more comforts on the escape awd or spend extra 8k and get a entry level Edge. Trying to imagine what will I kick myself more in 5yrs either not getting fancy comfort or bigger car. Can anyone care enough provide input on my situation?

I'm 19 with no college debt and no parent's money. For context, my dad is decent with money, however, my mom has about 3 credit cards, has been bailed out by her parents before (they paid like 20k of 2002 money to get her out of her debt), and is consistently broke. To get my first car, a 96 Integra GSR, I went without birthday and Christmas presents from 13 to 15, mowed lawns, etc, and bought it for 1k. The month after, I sold it for 3 and used the money for a NA Miata. I kept that car for three years, then sold it for a NB which I had for a year. While I had the NB, my dad gave me his CBR900RR as he had upgraded to a ZX10R and also wanted to get me into riding. Now I have the CBR and a IS300 wagon, money in the bank, a small business, and no debt. My rule is that if it's not on a huge sale (thanks Steam) or my birthday or something, I don't get it. Hence why I'm waiting until my birthday this year for my MSC.

Now my sister on the other hand.
She's paying god knows how much in tuition, is 11 months younger than me yet cannot drive (neither can her boyfriend. He recently texted me asking when I could pick him up a month in advance for thanksgiving.) Shes constantly broke from steam games, shitty jewelry, donating money to twitch streamers, and other useless stuff.

my cousin has a good paying job. but she's an airhead and a bit of a drama queen and way too self centered. she married a guy that works in the same good paying industry as her, was a total gentleman, and would buy her expensive things. She was totally dismissive of shit she didnt like, even when it was expensive shit, and was extremely flippant about how she was "never having kids".

Literally every single generation since the WW2, from boomers to crossers to doomers to zoomers, have all been materialistic brain dead consumerist drones. The difference is just how much money they can afford to spend. Millenials waste money on new phones because they can't afford to waste it on mcmansions and boats and cadillacs like boomers could.

Horseshit. Depending on the model, you're paying a premium to be the guinea pig. Meanwhile the used car chads get to buy the proven reliable models for a third of the price.

You absolutely cannot have that feeling with a new car. De-fucking-bate me. With a new car, you financed something the bank owns and a million other people own. With an old car, it's something you made. I saved this thing from a junkyard and the whole thing probably to date cost me less than the down payment on a modern NPC-mobile. I did ALL of the work. I bought ALL of the parts and did ALL of the research on this platform.

The cost-to-fun ratio is unparalleled. I can afford much much faster cars, I'm on the verge of pulling the trigger on a Viper GTS. You can't buy cars like that today new from the lot and even if you could, for the kind of money cars like that cost new today when there are so many better options out there used, why would you?

You don't need infotainment systems. Cars today are bogged down with so many electronic nannies and so much bullshit it's pathetic.

Gen Z is missing out if you ask me. Why on earth would you finance a new car when for the same price you could actually own something fun to drive, even if it's FWD?
>>
>>19850254

And I would like to expand on this a bit, I think Gen Z has never been in cars like the original Celica, Integra GSR, Probe GT, these were all simple drivers cars that didn't have electronic nannies. Pedal placement was perfect for heel-toe clutching. Visibility was priority umber 1. Interiors were simple. Automatics were optional, and non-existent on some models. My Probe GT doesn't even have traction control or none of that and my first one didn't even have ABS (I disabled it on the 93)

Maybe the reason Gen Z has this attitude towards cars being appliances is because for the most part in the last 15 years the automotive industry has reserved fun cars for the rich or well-heeled, when back in the 1990s you could have a Celica GTS, Type R or Probe GT for under 30k, even after inflation today those cars were cheaper than their modern counterparts. Coupled with the fact they have convinced the gullible public that SUVs are "safer" when it's actually about them being profitable since they cost as much to make as a sedan but have more room, Gen Z hasn't had the driver's car experience.

Go to a fabric or craft store and get twist pins (usually used on slip covers). get about 20 of them and twist away.
>>
>>19850077

One of the few newer cars that has my seal of approval. Proper manual gearbox, I think the ST models were Ford's attempt at affordable sporty cars that had some balls

For $17,500 I would have bought an FD RX7 that needed some love or a 4th gen Z28/SS but if you financed that 17,500 you did alright on the fun scale compared to other financed cars in that department.

I rode in one of those that was modified and definitely liked it. It was quick, much faster than my Probe off the line. You'll like it.
>>
>>19850310
nice. It seemed like it was worth buying new since it was just a couple thousand more for 30k less miles and not having to worry about it being beat on by it's first owner. The cool think about the FiST is that insurance is cheap as hell.

How do people have so much trouble with money? I'll tell you how. They make shit decisions like moving out, or taking out loans for school, financing a car they cant afford, buying new smartphones and laptops worth thousands and eating out often (though I'm guilty of this as well).

Also
>no student loans
Literally take a year or 2 off, save up, then keep working while in school so you dont get jewed over by student loans.

I laugh any time i see this shit. People spend student loans on dumb shit too. I've seen people spend it on cars, building gaming pcs, and fucking macbooks. Like nigger, stop.

Just wait until they have to pay it back

>>79 percent of respondents agreed that "used cars will cost you more in the long run in maintenance"
Possibly true if you're not a wrencher. Just replace "maintenance" with "total running costs".
Driving a car involves many different types of costs: Depreciation, insurance, taxes, maintenance, repairs, fuel etc. It's a whole calculation and depends on where you live, what you drive, how you drive it and how much. It also depends whether you prefer the stability and security that comes with having warranty on a new car, or owning something where the engine could blow up any minute.

Basically there's pros and cons and it depends on a whole lot of factors, and always only buying used shitboxes isn't always the cheapest option in the long run.

Zoomer here
We are by far the laziest generation so there really isn't any real chance of being able to afford a new car.
These quasi-zoomer millenials are full of shit.
everyone I know drives a used car and aren't ashamed of it. The only people my are driving new cars that I know of are single children of liberal parents, and gasstation-nigger chaldeans who know how to work the system.
