Newest hiking dog, the old ones are a fair bit too old and the younger dogs are homebodies who hate long trips. Unfortunately I always forget to snag some photos of our hikes but this one was snagged after we got home from Raven Rock NC.

Btw have any of your dogs dropped on the ground and dead weighted on you? My other dogs are retarded, and everytime we hit a trail they'd lay down halfway through and not move even if I dragged them. Last time I had to carry them back to the car. They'll run themselves silly at the park though.

This is Jake and he's a Min-Pin-Poo. He's 5 years old and has been my kayak buddy for the past 2 and a half seasons. He's used to the choppy waters of Barnegat Bay but once in a while you might catch him lazily drifting down Cedar Creek on a mild, sunny afternoon.

He used to be a little terror but he's calmed down a lot since he finally found his calling as a Salty Dog. However, Jake suffered a sprained knee at the beginning of August and keeps aggravating it - so he will be on the DL until the beginning of next season. Still, there will be plenty of woods-trips over the winter.

Adventure is always calling!

I found an abandoned doggo .

Yesterday I was going for a walk and on the side of the trail there was a dogger in the trail for came to me when I passed by , he doesn't seems really old , he was skinny and kinda shakey but he wasn't against me patting him , he started following me , I thought it was just a lost dog or a dog who escaped his yard to I passed nears all the nearby houses in the perimeter but he didn't seems to find home ,he seemed kinda reluctant to going too far away from the place I found him , I came back home but he followed me , I said fuck it and let it outside and thought that he'll eventually find his owner .
Today morning I go for my run and I pass the same spot , he is exactly here and start following me again , I go back home after my run and this time he don't follow me up to out of the forest but not up to my home .
30 min Ago I went again with food and he was exactly at the same spot , I fed him and found a leash . If I walk far away he follow me but any time I start following his move he always lead me to that spot ,I believe it's the spot he was abandoned , I'll create a poster and I'll put some in the surrounding town but I don't think i'll get any call since i'm 100% sure it's an abandoned doggo and not a lost doggo .

Pic related is not him , it's my dogger

that is one handsome dog

I live in the Netherlands and my family has (and currently) owns several ridgebacks. Short haired dogs simply dont have the coat to comfortably deal with inclement weather. Our ridgebacks always wear a dog coat in autumn/winter, it really helps them deal with colder weather by keeping their core temp up. It won't turn them into huskis, but every little bit helps. would recommend/10.

on that note, i really need to get a new gf so i can finally start a family and get a doggo of my own. being a corporate lawyer stuck at the office all day doesn't really allow that atm.

>owned ridgebacks and smoushonden (dutch breed, pic related).

>I always heard they are really intelligent/active dogs. what are they like irl?
She's so smart it's like I have a 3 year old child walking around my house and they're really eager to please if you train them correctly. If you keep them healthy they can live to be 16. She's almost 11 but I've given here regular exercise and healthy food so she still acts and runs like a puppy. When I meet other people with dogs out on the trail they're always shocked when I tell them her age. In her prime she was way faster than most other dogs.
>how do they deal with bad weather?
Poodles are so cold-hearty that they've been used in the Alaskan Iditarod trail race for years. Even at her old age, I can take her out snowshoeing or something like that, and she'll be comfortable in the cold for hours. As they get older of course this decreases. Generally they don't handle heat well and you really have to keep an eye on them in the summer because they can get heatstroke very easily, so don't get one if you live in a warm region. That's really their only weak point. Rain, snow, wind, cold water, and thunderstorms, they can handle it. If you can learn to manage their high strung personalities that comes with being a very intelligent breed then they're god tier /out/ doggos.

Thank you for being smart and putting an orange vest on your dog while hunting. I was just reading about a lady in Canada who got her dog shot because someone mistook it for a wolf...

I don't understand how or why you would shoot at something when you haven't seen it clearly. It's literally the "shoot first ask questions later" mentality. Especially when a hunter shoots a person thinking they're a deer because they weren't wearing blaze orange. Like, wtf. Itchy fingers and wishful thinking, pretty much sums up guntards.

It was, tougher than I thought. Altitude, little water, and smoke from wildfires made it tough. 18miles, 6500' of gain, dog's first time out she flushed 13 birds. We're both new hunters, I didn't connect on any birds (only took a shot on 2), but she's clearly the better hunter

Lola (8yo husky shepherd mix) in the foreground is my brothers dog that I am taking care of while he lives with the mother-in-law and builds his business

Thor (14yo mutantly large husky) in the back is my dog since '10

I had another Husky, Lada, until this summer when she died at the ancient age of 15
her health took a quick downturn over a week
so I decided to take her on one last "camping" trip, drove up to a campsite rather than hiked in like we usually do, then put her down if she survived the weekend
she died the first night next to me

>>1106720
>How do they fare in hot weather?
not too horribly
but they need a lot of care when theh temps are above ~80F
>wading/soaking pool
>brush out their undercoat as soon as they start shedding
>5+ gallons of drinking water each day
>plentiful grassy shade
>and if temps get too high they need to come into a cooled building
>>
>>1107422
and I have a pack for both of them
everyone works, everyone eats
>>
>>1107422
Sorry for your loss. She died in a place she loved, more than a lot of us can say.

Also fuck you, now I'm thinking about my dog dying.
>>
>>1107426
thanks
it was pretty bitter sweet bc she was so old
and Thor took it pretty hard the month between when Lada died and I took in Lola
the two were sled mates since Thor was a puppy
and the people I got them from gave me an amazing deal on a pair of sled trained huskies just to make sure they stayed together

and Lada was slowing down over the past 2 years
but she was healthy and happy up to the last week
and happy till the end

My field golden looks so much like a deer when. She has the same color and then the backs of her legs get a little lighter colored and are a little longer/shaped differently. I'll probably get an orange vest even if it isn't deer hunting season when we go grouse hunting this year.

in my experience training, loyalty, and exhaustion are more important than gender

a well trained and loyal dog will wander but make sure they stay close to you

a worn out dog will do nothing but eat/drink, sleep/rest, and bark/growl at anything that approaches the camp when you aren't actively hiking
just make sure you know your dog's limits and don't get them so exhausted you have to make an extended camp for the dog to recover

Interesting. Makes sense. They only spend about two months out of every year in heat, though. But all non-breeding pets should be fixed once they've reached full physical maturity.
>>
>>1110654

Why? I keep my male intact to keep his tempermant stable and so he doesnt endure the physiological changes of being neutered. I dont have plans to breed him.
>>
>>1110664
>to keep his tempermant stable

>>1110664
PROTIP: both of those reasons aren't valid or true re:neutering, particularly once they've reached physical maturity
>>
>>1111064

Well I think I know my breed and individual dogs, so why would I neuter my dog?

>cut off ears
>cut off tail

>wont cut off testicles
People lose their mind
>>
>>1111067
I'm not "losing my mind"

I'm saying that a fully-developed dog you dont intend to breed won't suffer the types of effects you're talking about and you don't have to worry about him lighting off to spread his wild oats
>>
>>1111098

He will be harder to keep fit, will turn into the canine equivalent of a 45yo lesbian.

He has a very stable tempermant, removing hormones from him is really rolling the dice what he could turn into.

In 2 years I have had no issues with him trying to get into bitches on heat.
>>
>>1104300
You're right, but you're wrong also. There were Dachshund used for badgers in the past but they were used in teams and the lines of badger dogs are well dead. The closest surviving relative is the wirehaired, they are still worked around the world. Just not on Badger.

>I'm saying that a fully-developed dog you don't intend to breed won't suffer the types of effects you're talking about

You do realise how hormones work right? Its not like ok well he's an adult dog now so he doesn't need testosterone anymore we can just shut that off. Hormones effect a dog continuously throughout its life and will affect its physiologically and psychologically.

>you don't have to worry about him lighting off to spread his wild oats

you do realise that a male dog will still try to fuck other female dogs even if he has been neutered

and him running off is probably more determined by his breed like many hunting breeds like to roam and explore and that comes down to their prey drive not wanting to fuck female dogs

You cant say on one hand well hey just neuter your dog it will stop it from running away and then say nah neutering a dog won't make it lazy or have other effects.

I follow several people in Europe on IG still hunting badgers with Dackel...

Mine has toed the line with a feral cat in a rabbit burrow alot of times, they are still hardcore terriers it is just a shame alot of the times the body doesnt match the gameness. Mini x standard gives longer legs and better confirmation.
>>
>>1111241
Patterdales are still used for badgers and some people are using lurchers with a lot of bull in them
