What states have the best outdoors
>>
>>1098948
Are you retarded ?
Some people like mid states because medium climate and decent woods , some people like south because decent woods kinda swampy and kinda warm all year , nothern states have colder climates and are more heavily wooded , I can keep going on about various shit that factors into it but it all comes down to what you personally like
>>
>>1098948
California , Montana, and Oregon

Great tier: California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont

Good tier: Arizona, New Mexico, North Carolina, New York, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Upper Michigan

Decent tier: Massachusetts, Virginia, Kentucky, South Carolina, Florida

Shit tier: literally everything else

I would honestly put California as a 10. This is coming from a WAfag, I fucking hate Californians, but their state is absolutely gorgeous. I mean, even if there were nothing else, the fact that they have redwoods bumps them up beyond anyone else. But they also have some fucked up desert, great forests, mountains. it's a fucking fantastic bit of land.

Kentucky.

Land between the lakes.

Lake cumberland.
Appalachian mountains.
Red river gorge.
Rolling hills and cliff faces everywhere.
Perfect climate.
Virtually no laws to hold you back from having fun.

They are basically pigeons. A better question is where to hunt elk, which you'll want to go to eastern KY or land between the lakes for.

Dont use soap. Soaps are almost always oil based.

Rubbing alcohol is a solvent and is all you will ever need to remove the oils. It works better than anything else to get rid of the oils. Besides acetone, that is.

Oil-free soap is easily sub-par to industrial solvents.

The fact that soap is "oil-based" doesn't matter, the other half is sodium hydroxide. Soap is a surfactant and the best thing for removing oil from your skin. Isopropyl alcohol or acetone are way harsher on your skin than needed to remove urushiol.
>>
>>1101233
Sodium hydroxcide in its pure form maybe, but in the soap making process its neutralized to nearly no effect lmao.

Oil based ANYTHING only spreads the urishol. You WILL fuck yourself up if you use oil based soap.

Rubbing alcohol doesnt hurt my skin.
>>
>>1101263
It doesn't matter that it's made with oil or sodium hydroxide, it is a salt when you use it. It is a surfactant which allows you to wash off the urishol with water.

Alcohol is harsh on your skin whether or not you realize it.

I'm thinking of moving to Minnesota. How good is Minnesota for backpacking?

I'm interested in New Hampshire, too, which is surely better with a more interesting geography, but I need a good ratio of population and places to hike.

Northern NH, the part with the nicest scenery, is pretty sparsely populated

Do you not know how to make soap?

Soap is oil + sodium hydroxcide

It isn't one or the other.

The goal is to remove the oils from your skin. Not smear them around. You need soap specially designed for removing oils, such as dawn. A normal soap will not achieve this.

Rubbing alcohol doesnt hurt your skin. Lol. Its easily better than 2 weeks of dermatitis(poison ivy rash).

Cold water is more effective at removing the oils from your skin than an oil based soap is, and I believe you may be confusing the effect. You may very well achieve 90% this way, but you aren't EVER going to get the job done as well as 30 seconds of rubbing alcohol would.

They're pretty different places. For populated areas i think the Twin Cities are far preferable to Boston. But NH has mountains and is a shorter drive to nothingness than MN is. Pic related is in far northern MN, it's beautiful but it's probably 8 hours from the cities.
>>
>>1101268
Yeah, that's the only drawback i have with NH, its lack of population. Reality is that I'm a pretty big hermit, but I'd still like to be near SOME towns, which is why I am leaning towards MN, but MN doesn't have a lot of mountains, which is major beans.

I actually have a buddy out in Reno, didn't get to go /out/ much but seemed like an ok place. Dry heat sucks thou, give me humidity any day.

Like I said I'm from NJ, I don't think I want to switch coasts so dramatically. I'm leaning toward the southeast. Not as much public land as out west I know.

Alaska is the dream for all /out/doorsmen isn't it? The cold would be too much for me.
>>
>>1101128
I grew up in Reno. Fuck that town. Fuck Burning Man too.

Id include Utah in great tier, but other than that, good list.

Oil is hydrophobic so cold water is very ineffective at removing it. You need a surfactant such as soap to allow the oil to be removed with water. It's basic chemistry.
>>
>>1101334
The cold water is to close the pores in your skin to prevent the Urishol from penetrating deeper.

You are missing an extremely core component here and that is when fat(oil) is mixed with sodium hydroxcide(lye) to make soap, you are mixing an acid with a base and thereby almost entirely neutralizing the effects of your so called "surfactant".
>>
>>1101339
>close your pores
>soap isn't a surfactant because it's made of 2 different types of chemicals
you fucking idiot
>>
>they dont have 2 states
Michigan should be higher on the list. The entire u.p. is like an un touched woodsmans paradise. Its the best kept secret in the union.
>>
>>1101342
If it's oil based soap it literally isn't going to have any effect on other oils, how is this not clear to you?

You poor sorry bastard.

Go ahead, right now, cover yourself in poison ivy and try to just oil based soap.

You surfactants are soaps that remove oils. Any soap that is OIL BASED will not do this.

10/10 I've been heavilly trolled.

Because I understand saponifaction and how soap works. What do you think the purpose of soap is if not to emulsify hydrophobic compounds in water?

It actually is purely objective. Can't make Texas lower without changing that.
>>
>>1101369
That isn't the purpose of an oil based soap. Use dawn, you fuckwit.

These threads always make me lmao always a bunch of nerds who have only been to like 3 states pretending they've been to then all and judging stats they've never been to

I've covered the entire world on google earth in maximum zoom at a minimum of 10 times. I have read and researched the parks and trails and flora and fauna of the entirey of planet Earth and regularly test myself to make sure I have consistent up to date knowledge of anywhere on Earth. I have physically been to and done primitive camping in 102 countries. I have been to every U.S. state, more than once.

I cannot even have a conversation with anybody on this board. I can only shitpost. I have literally nothing in common with any of the morons on this board. I am actually stuck being a sarcastic trolls. I cannot express myself with such ignorant twats.

Wait so a solvent is going to dissolve the oil, including your skin oils (aka your defense), then the urushiol is going to get absorbed by more of your skin. Dissolve doesn't mean that the oils are *poof* gone, just that they become part of a solution where the oils are going to float around and potentially get absorbed into the skin.

Fuck who knows, I like to think oil is lighter than water so I rinse in cold water and try to gently rub the affected area.
