How do I into offroad?

I want a capable vehicle to get deep /out/.

Thinking of starting with a $4kish vehicle and slowly adding things to it.

I work at a sheet metal production shop where we are always making skid plates and bumpers, so a lot of those kind of items will be free.

Where do I start?

Hey man we all need something to get around town while we're not out. Made any additions to it?

I just got new tires and put a lift/shocks on it. Camper houses a DiY carpet kit/sleeping platform and I keep a rollout tote of essential camping shit so its basically ready to go whenever.

Anyone wired up a solar panel to their vehicle? Ive got a small one I'd like to get mounted for power to the camper shell area, maybe wired to trickle charge the battery too.

Power Wagon's already a pretty well kitted-out truck to begin with ... front/rear lockers, sway bar disconnect, skid plates, retarded low gearing, winch, better suspension.
I put slightly larger tires on it, unfucked a lot of what the previous owner did to it, replaced stereo/headunit with something decent and added a two-way radio (which may be getting replaced shortly).

It's kind of unfortunate I don't use this truck to its full offroad capability... if i'm playing around innawoods, i'd rather be on a 1wd with knobby tires instead of a pickup.
As well as this truck does, I think the 6.4 with 4.10's would work a little better than the 5.7 with 4.56's I have now.

I have a small 30w one that I croc-clip right to the battery and just I just lay it on the roof.

Except coffee in the morning, a small reading light at night, and charging camera/phone/laptop I rarely ever use power. It seems to get on fine.

When I was looking a comparable Tacoma was three times as much as my ranger, if you could find one with decent mileage. Rangers and explorer parts are interchangeable, more or less, so parts are fucking everywhere and inexpensive.

Rsngerstation is also a fantastic resource for walkthroughs on almost anything.

Ranger is nice. What year are you thinking of? They cost a lot of money but still less than a Taco of the same year. Only downside is the stupid torsion bars. Everything else is kinda the same with their small quirks with repairs and maintenance. Overall, the taco is twice as more time to "work on" but the ranger is twice as much effort.

I'll admit there is a pretty significant meme tax with Tacomas but it's not all smoke and mirrors, assuming regular fluid changes most Tacomas can be expected to make it to around 300k mi, whereas most Rangers I've seen helping a friend get parts for his in a scrapyard top out at around 200-225k mi, you do have a few that make it past that but it's significantly less common than with Tacos, they make up 2.5 percent of registered vehicles over 200k despite selling half as many as Rangers for a reason.

When your buying a Tacoma you really just need to look at mileage rather than year, a Tacoma with 150k is roughly comprable with a Ranger that has 100k and I wouldn't buy a Gen 2 (2005+) Taco, the Gen 1s are pretty much better in most ways provided you don't want useless electronic doodads.

Maybe Toyotas last longer on the road because they're worth more, so people keep them running instead of junking them outright.

In the rest of the world, Toyotas do not last longer than longer Japanese pickups.

Infact they're somewhere in the middle in terms of engine, and drivetrain reliability.
>>
>>1118648
>Infact they're somewhere in the middle in terms of engine, and drivetrain reliability.

As a diesel mech in Aus I'd say ever since they went to their D4D branded engine management their general drivetrain durability has gone to shit, we turn over 1KD and 1VD injectors at a scary rate. Also the turbos on the 1KD are just bad, their boost management is all over the place and when they fail they take the boost controller out with them because Toyota forgot to fuse it.

>diesel tech

LN106 hilux 3L 2.8D engine.

Have horrible engine vibrations at lower rpms. It's like there's very torque/power spiky output coming from engine itself. Higher rpms also feel nasty.

If you unload engine while in gear, don't know what's the proper expression, like driving 50km/h with rpms just right that drivetrain is not causing any acceleration or deceleration vibrations are gone. As soon as you start accelerating or slowing down just a little bit vibrations are back.

It makes decent power, fires first time every time even in extreme cold, uses no oil. There's some black smoke under load at lower rpms.

Could that be injector problem? Tried undoing one at a time but didn't come to any conclusion. Measured header temps, looks alright. Have all new engine mounts. There's no flex pipe on exhaust tho, don't know if it had one originally.

Some strange injector problems? Frozen center on clutch disk so springs can't "filter" pulses from engine output?
>>
>>1118706
Yeah I'd be looking at clutch myself, maybe collapsed springs or something.
Black smoke is normal for a non turbo diesel and if it was an injector I doubt it would go away at a particular load point, an airlock in an injector line or a seized injector is usually a hard miss which doesn't go away.
I'd get a flex pipe though, the L series engines do vibrate a lot naturally and that probably is transmitting vibration when the engine torques over a bit on the mounts.

>>

I have a v6 automatic, while you wont be winning any races with it, if you floor it you can overtake pretty much anyone in traffic.

As for space in the back? I took the backseats out of mine and I have neough room for my moutain bike, when I take off the front tires or about 50 inches diagonally. I'd post a picture but its dark

Own a TJ and don’t even know what kind of engine you have? It’s the inline 6 you dumbass.

>>1119159

Look into a 04-06 wrangler unlimited. It’s got a stretched wheelbase and more room in the back, even with the backseat. Also has more foot room for the back seat, a stronger rear axle, and limited slip in the rear axle.

Mine before I sold it

Buy an older 4 cylinder Nissan or Toyota. Put all terrain tires on it. Lift it a couple inches (you can do this in your driveway in an hour if you have a floor jack).

I personally really like Nissans because they don't have a memetic price markup like Toyotas have and do the same shit.

Pic is my old D21. Dont have any pictures of my new (to me) Frontier yet.

Bought myself a Jeep Wrangler JK... Want to get into offroading and backwoods camping, pretty much the reason I got the vehicle.
