Film General Thread - light leaks editions
Old thread >>3181812

Light leaks, love em? hate em? Have they help you attract hipster babes on Instagram? Did you come home to find them long dickin' your wife?
Tells us your experience.

Post photos! We want to see beautiful grainy goodness!

Visited Japan with a bellows camera that turned out to be leaky. I'd rather not have them, but some pics turned out interesting.
Disregard streaks from my shitty first attempt at film development.

On a semi related note: Just swiped a "Bellows camera, Compur Rapid" which I believe to actually be a post-war Voigtländer Bessa 66 with Color-Skopar lens: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Old-Bellows-Camera-Compur-Rapid-Bag-5t4998-/401436391776?nma=true&si=YK5Wc%252BHDr2ubebmTVJpAfonfdRo%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Always use a black drape cloth over bellows. Just like what you see people using for View Cameras/Field Cameras. Only it goes over the bellows, not just you.

>>3187440
There's a company that makes rolls of film that simulate light leaks looking stuff and other hispter-type film problems. Some are pretty terrible.

I have a camera with a leak

It might just be that the film compartment door doesn't close as well as it should because I had to tape the batteries in place, but what do I know. It's just snapshits and it cometimes looks kind of nice I guess.

snap from the only industrial port in slovenia, funny white giraffes for lifting tonnes of shit.

ABOUT DEVELOPERS

got two bottles i bought from some dude, they supposedly had vitamin c type developer and dektol. tried both and i got fucking nothing, not even some feeble image, nothing, black fucking rolls. tried both diluted and straight stock, didnt get anything. treated them like one would d76. you pour, you wash it off then fixer, then wash it off. what could have gone wrong?
>>
Hey /fgt/, how much is the equiv development cost 36/roll if you do it by yourself vs you bring it to a photo developing store, excluding the printing cost?
>>
>>3187886
depends how much of the developing materials you buy and how long they last, kind of impossible to say but develop only for me at the local lab is $6/roll

Q:
while developing a roll of acros, I managed to open the dev tank while pouring out the developer, realized the mistake and closed the tank as quick as i could.. i fixed it while cursing myself loudly, but when the roll was done, everything was good, no fog, no streaks or anything even though the room was far from dim...

how come? is that a normal thing, or was i just incredibly lucky??

Because the film saw no more developer after the exposure to light (negating the slight amount of developer it saw for a few seconds as you poured it out). Then you fixed it. Had it been exposed prior to developing, or during developing when there was still a good chunk of dev time left, you would have had problems.

So I'm going to be travelling for a few months early next year and am wondering what my options are regarding 120 negative film. I'm after something as colourful as possible and while I usually shoot Ektar the skin tones suck so I've ruled that out. The only other films I can think of are Portra 400, Fuji Pro 400H and Rollei CN200. Or am I missing something?

Any thoughts?

Developer restrainers like KBr that lessen development fogging of certain film/dev combos do not affect aging/bad storage-related fogging. They just make the final image thinner/underdeveloped against the preexisting fogging. Jesus christ.

Received a nice lightseal kit from the states for the old F-1.

Everything looks as good as new. Being able to pop nearly every apart with a nail helped a great deal.

Right up until one last little crumb of the old seals decided to stick itself to the shutter curtain when I blew the dust out with the compressor.

Well. Shit.

It probably would've happened soon enough with the amount of crumbs that came off each time the door was opened.

Anyway. Shit closes more firmly, and the fleck of foam doesn't seem to bother it none.

Well, flatbeds already suck. It's more difficult to notice when you're scanning negatives that then need to be inverted to understand the tones. With slides, you can see exactly what they are supposed to look like without scanning...so the quality of shatbeds becomes more readily apparent.

What paper and size are all of you /fgt/s printing on in the darkroom? I'm almost out of paper and going to be going up to 9,5 x 12" when restocking. So far have been printing on Ilford Multigrade RC Satin in 7 x 9.5", negs ranging from half frame to 6x7. It's pretty good for 35mm (especially in half frame), but I feel like I could go a bit bigger to really get the grain to pop. But printing 6x6 at that size just doesn't feel like it's worth it really, and shooting more MF recently is the main reason I want to go bigger. Also going to switch from satin to pearl to get slightly deeper blacks.
>>
>>3189126
I've shot a bunch of it at 800 and even more at 1600. It's pretty much equivalent to HP5 with maybe a little less dynamic range. For how much cheaper it is than HP5 it's really good, my favorite cheap black and white film so far actually. Just started bulk loading RPX400 though so we'll see how I like that, though some people say they're the same film.

I've developed mine using either Hc110 dil B or Xtol 1:1 and both work great. I've also printed a bunch of it with good results.

Does anyone here own a Kiev 4am?

also all film scanners are absolutely garbage (either with hardware, software, or both). this is the cross you must bear unless you scan with a digital camera, but even then you have to set up a dumbass and unwieldy scanning rig

Haha yes it is a large, industrial, Soviet chunk of Soviet metal and is complete trash, only worth 2 test rolls at most. It is so sturdy from METAL but glass is not so sturdy and only makes garbage for the bin. Do not think about it, only marvel at the crudeness of Eastern Bloc manufacturing

Speaking of industrial, can anyone redpill me on Fuji Industrial? The samples I've seen look pretty good, I've been looking for a low-saturation film
Kino packaging too

>Speaking of industrial, can anyone redpill me on Fuji Industrial?

Sure, as long as promise never to use "redpill" ever again.

They are just repackaged normal films. Nothing special. the 400 is just X-tra 400 for example.

How do you guys get color prints done? I do my own darkroom printing for black and white but wondering about c41 & e6. I imagine most places just scan & print on a Noritsu if you hand them the negs?

I suppose it's fine for postcard size prints, but honestly I've not been very impressed with the prints I've seen. Recently especially saw some medium format stuff a friend got printed and it was... kind of basic, the scans I've seen of the same shots look better.

Are you sure it's just repackaged? A lot of people seem to say so, but some also say it handles reds differently. Either way, if it means bulk film for (relatively) cheap I'm cool with it

>>3189844
Kino is a good word, fuck you anon
>>
>>3190008
What a dumb gimmick. Learn how to light a scene or use a tripod instead of trying to compensate for your being stupid with your sensor. High iso is digicuck shit.
>>
>>3190020
Strobes or a tripod for street photography? Yeah ok dude.
>>
>>3189234
My trays are only big enough for up to 7"x9½", and I strongly prefer 5"x7" for 35mm negatives cos of my oversized easel. And to hide the grain, because I'm still in the grain peeping phase of having a darkroom in my bathroom & a Leitz focomat that autofocuses...
>>
>>3190034
Hey, it worked for diCorcia.

But yeah, that guy is an idiot.
>>
>>3190017

I am 100% sure about 400. Searching the film code states it is X-tra. You are probably thinking of Premium 400 which has better reds.

Searching the 100 film code doesn’t match anything though.
>>
>>3187526
this nice

Why do most film photos I see here and elsewhere are generic snapshit of nothing interesting, the photo only look barely acceptable thanks to the flattering film tone. Why can't filmfags into long exposure and careful planned shots?

Not even trying to trigger you guys, serious question.
>>
>>3190170
Look at it this way: you only see the good shit on Reddit/Facebook/Pinterest because of their memelike systems. We don’t have that here so we have no way of filtering out the bad photos.

Because people use the film aesthetic (whatever that is) as a crutch and think any image can thus become interesting because of muh nostalgia.

Is the coolscan 9000 worth it? I had to settle for a V700 but honestly I have yet to be satisfied with anything it puts out.
>>
>>3190170

This whole thread is about light leaks. No one is going to use an untested/flawed camera for a well planned long exposure.

And I think if most people in /fgt/ were going to do a long exposure they would use digital. Long exposure is hard to visualize, and it is so much easier to experiment with settings when you can see the results instantly.

I was always peeved about people calling it "Industrial" when the package doesn't have industrial written anywhere on it.

I dunno what they go for these days...but unless they are sub $1k you'd be better off going for a digital camera scanner setup.

standard 'street' photo of nothing taken with a profound lack of inspiration/intent. technically okay, composition okay, generically inoffensive.

good film photography is just photography, specifically posting it as film is a gimmick used by bad photographers and instagram whores

As I thought it's a Bessa 66. Apart from the long shutter times being slow it looks like it's in pretty good shape. Nothing a bit of CLA can't fix.
Not too bad for 21 Euros.

Speaking of light leaks, I hate them. I just bought a Minolta Hi-Matic AF2, and the light seals are pretty much completely gone. Should I tape it to avoid light leaks or do those cameras do a good enough job avoiding them without tape?
>>
Would you recommend the Pentax Spotmatic? I was offered $50 for one, although it is branded Honeywell. It comes with a 55mm f1.8 SMC pentax

They're one of the few old cameras that'll meter correctly with modern batteries. They've built in voltage-regulating circuitry.

Otherwise, it's 1960s-1970's Japanese build quality. Almost everything will be metal.

The lens is good.

The exact same way you scan negatives really. I scan in so the highlights are just below clipping values. Easy peasy.
