This one, more because it marks when I finally stopped being so timid at shooting street/strangers.

I have ~30 rolls of undeveloped film from this year. Have a feeling my actual favourite is on one if those rolls.

I experimented with cropping tighter before and i decided against it for that exact reason plus it just looks too sparse. I like the added contrast and patterns of the building above

Understandable. My reasoning is that the wall ending on the left is a little too final, if that makes sense. The two people walking are already in negative space so I feel that should be emphasised. The space on the left where the wall ends isn't necessary to the composition and actually detracts from it in my opinion. Sometimes sparseness is a good thing.
Here's another go at it

The text and the wall themselves are out of focus.
Why all that empty space? I know you want to create a spotlight effect on the letters, but exposure was not correct to create clear contrast. My eyes are drawn to the grainy dark parts instead.
What do those characters mean? A confounding poem in a Chinese outhouse? Then include the shitstained toilet and the rustic door. Context.
Don't do minimal stuff unless you have mastered colors, textures and shapes.

I'm not generally fond of my own photos, mostly cause I think I'm not educated or well versed enough in photography to craft good shots. I thought this was a good shot though, went to Lake Tahoe, CA for my anniversary. Definitely looking for feedback, much appreciated.

A good click, but I think the water is a bit too much blue. Maybe selectively could've toned down the vibrance a bit and saturation as well.

Also, the ripples look synthetic so they need to be handled as well.

This is pretty much sooc. I had really good light and sky combination and all I needed to do was raise highlights and drop contrast very slightly to achieve that

i very slightly split toned the shadows and highlights to cool the shadows and warm the highlights

I used to post here eons ago and have dropped back in to nostalgia and despite the inevitable 'well fuck back off then' and '/p/ was never good' etc, it's a very stark difference to what used to be one of the few places you could post something you love, watch it get torn to shreds, but fucking learn something from it... and it did show in an improvement across the board in RPT and regular poster threads over time. I wonder where you can go for that now.

Try to reduce brightness near the rails. Give the grass on the right hand side a vibrant kick and then try to darken the shadows under the bridge.
Make the red object(pipe prolly) a bit more red so that it can be noticed properly. I think the stark contrast will be a nice addition.

Finally, see if you wanna add some vignette to the right hand corner. Disclaimer - it might ruin the image.
>>
>>3215521
Another thing, make the sunlit grass and the tree's leaves a bit more saturated. Should look better.
Happy editing.

First anon I want to thank you for your interest. I hope you aren't being sarcastic.

Those big bats (aka flying foxes) have a tendancy to die in utility lines. I wouldn't go so far as to say it's common, but everyone around these parts has seen it. Trees, power lines, etc., they just seem to crash and hang in them when it's die time.

So this little bugga died in the power lines in the alley outside my house. I promptly went out and togged it purely for the novelty of the situation. As the weeks drew on the bat remained, slowly becoming both a mummy and a curiosity in the neighbourhood. Often our neighbours could be heard to discuss how long it's been there and how long, they wondered, it would stay up there.

SO I checked the first photo to find the date, which was the 21st of the month. I decided to take a photo of it on the 21st of each month as long as it was still up there. As you can see the lighting and cloud conditions changed but I stuck to my guns - golden hour on the 21st of each month.

The day I took the first photo we think was the 2nd or 3rd day it was in the power lines, literaly the day after the last photo it fell into a heap in the alley. There's still a leathery patch of fur on the pavement that's been run over god knows how many times, and this was like 2 months ago.

Anywho, I framed a couple and gifted them to friends, one of which really loves it.

>sorry for the redundancy to anyone who has seen me post the story before

>>3214608
>>3214640
>>3213586
>>3214389
these I like

>>3214397
a bit tilted and it doesn't really have a clean look which I think mainly is due to the unsharp foreground. That's a bit sad because you surely put effort in this one and especially the area around the mountains really turned out great.

>>3214420
start by straightening it, it's tilted. the rock at the left bottom is cut off, that's very distracting. the way you generally composed it is not bad though.

>>3213788
nice but feels a bit undecisive regarding framing and post production

>>3213712
you started straight up with a d750? wew, risky or spoiled or both. shot is pretty nice though, the aperture really pays off. the post looks a bit instagrammy but it looks good nevertheless.

>>3213258
not the best composition, hence the framing question. otherwise pretty nice

>>3213023
really cool, the way his gesture is the drunkard-version of the guy on the poster makes this shot for me
>>
>>3216071
started with a used RX100. there were areas where it lacked and it got dust on the sensor but since it's enclosed I would have been better off buying a new one. but got the D750 out of my own pocket. been very happy with it so far. anyway, thanks

Blow out highlights, turn up temperature, wash out photo and mute colors
Now you're a true instagram photographer, just like the other 800 million people that do this

Just be creative and make your own color grading and be unique for once
>>
>>3215597
Why did you put a signature on it?
Nobody is going to steal it. You can improve on the selective color but you need to worry about your focus first.
>>
I have decided to give some old school harsh /p/. critique

>>3212902
Potentially interesting subject but anemic composition. Following the rule of thirds isn't going make your photo good if there's an incredibly busy background

>>3212911
Missed focus on the girl, lines of the photo lead away from the subject and I have no reason to care about this girl.

>>3212941
Looking forward to your inevitable realization that this gimmick is very limited.

>>3212955
Pleasing colors, but pretty empty work on finding better subjects,

>>3212959
Focus your framing. You cut off its feet and ass, then leave tons of negative space on the left and top.

>>3212966
Composition is fine but completely empty and boring. I would believe best of a roll, not of the year.

>>3212972
Saturation looks radioactive, composition needs work, empty

>>3213023
Contender for best in the thread. The hands are what makes it.

>>3213155
Underexposed, no composition, completely uninteresting subject if you don't know this person.

>>3213168
Pay attention to framing. If you pulled back a bit more you might have had some interesting going with scale but as is, meh.

>>3213204
You are not a movie star from the 40s. Without context this photo is meaningless.

>>3213288
Decent series photo idea but you need more apples.

>>3213510
No

>>3213586
Colors are good, the shadow is playful but you've lost all highlight detail. Close but not good enough.

>>3213712
Pretty but empty

>>3213788
Underexposed, no subject and the lighting isn't even interesting.

>>3214322
NO SUBJECT
>>
(cont'd)

>>3214378
Subject underexposed and not even centered

>>3214389
An incredibly boring landscape.

>>3214397
This does nothing different than the millions of astrophotography photos out there.

>>3214436
Fine, but not very interesting. The same as almost all architectural photography

>>3214437
God, people need to learn to take it easy on saturation. Besides that though, it's a guy in a boat. Who cares?

>>3214608
Pretty good concept and nice execution. Colors and black levels look off to me though.

>>3214644
Potentially interesting subject but I don't like the execution. Neither subject is large enough in the frame and there's too much dead space.

>>3214645
Looks like an ad from a magazine about home decoration that no one reads.

>>3214793
Haha, I like this. Nothing amazing technically but good subject.

>>3214796
Good subject but the composition is not good.

>>3214804
Japan does not make something inherently interesting.

>>3215309
Awful, off-center, boring portrait of someone that is probably only interesting to you.
>>
(cont'd)

>>3215329
me

>>3215362
boring and it looks overexposed.

>>3215414
potentially interesting subject shot with little to no interest. Also, learn to prefocus.

>>3215501
Did you miss focus or is it soft? Potentially good tones but the composition is way off. You might have needed a different focal length to pulls this off. Something that compresses the space more.

>>3215510
Pay attention to framing. This is actually a pretty interesting subject but you need to get the whole scene and not cut off the front and back of the bike.

>>3215521
NO SUBJECT

>>3215597
nothing of interest.

>>3215613
Yes, exactly. You should try harder next time.

>>3215624
You woud need the fisherman if you actually wanted to try and make this work.

>>3215661
Don't even know where to start. it's a boring sunset lanscape photo with a tourist photo nestled inside.

>>3215719
You have a interesting shadow but nothing for it to play against. without that other element you have nothing.

>>3216050
Fix your colors, potential to be nice looking but ultimately empty photo.

>>3216093
This is better than the other one on a simple technical level but it's still not incredibly interesting.

>>3212969
>>3213117

>>3216041

Overall note, all of you need to remember.
A. 1mb maximum.
B. 1000px on the longest side.

No one cares how sharp your lens is.
>>
>>3216104
not an Instagram photographer, I actually edited it myself, but I am very new so I am learning and experimenting. you should have seen my disgusting over-saturated photos from a couple of months ago.
>>3216094
I'll tell you but, experiment for yourself I will tell you the process I use to edit my photos not exactly this one.
what I did/do is (in Lightroom) is level the photo and crop it how I want, next bring the highlights down shadows up then adjust exposure if I need to. I will then adjust the whites and blacks until I like it. next in forest scenes I will drop the contrast and bring up the clarity a bit. then I go to the tone curve and use the medium contrast, and adjust it how I wish (this photo I crushed the blacks a bit, I am guessing this is why he says it's an Instagram photo). next, I will use the white balance to find what I feel fits the best. at this point, I will clean up the photo if it needs it like if it has a dust spot or something that is distracting I want gone (unless it needs photoshop which will be done when I am finished) if needed I will use dehaze. after this is the coloring, I start with camera calibration where I drop the blue primary to -15 or so, and the red primary to 15 (unless I feel like it doesn't work, or needs to be higher or lower). after this I go to the hue section and mess with all of the sliders to find what I want, if the blues are too cyan I will bring it back a bit, but this part it just experimenting and trying to find what I like most. I then use the saturation to make things I want to stand out stand out more and the things that are too distracting less distracting, then I will use the luminance to bring the blue in the sky back a bit, usually with a scene like this with straw-like material I will drop the oranges so they are easier to see and the yellow goes higher to add some light into the dark straw. after this I will do my last clean up, and bring it into photoshop if I need to.
>>
>>3216128
>>3216094
forgot to add, I also use the adjustment brush a lot to correct things regionally, like in this photo I felt the sky was too pink, so I brought it back. and in some photos, I will also use it to lighten or darken certain areas that may be distracting, or I want to pop more. not trying to say you should follow what I do, but you should learn the tools (like I am trying to do) so that you can correct an image to fit exactly what you want. though most don't like crushing blacks because it is like "Instagram" you are probably better off knowing that it is possible to crush the blacks

that's not old school, that's just shit. your words are completely empty, mostly just personal dislikes without any advice for improvement. Refrain from trying to critique people if you don't know what you are doing
>>
>>3216929
>mostly just personal dislikes

Quite right. A lot of old /p/ was shit, and a lot of the vaunted old C&C was just as worthless as these days, but the difference was the good critique, if you had the wit to discern it from thie shit, used to judge each picture on what it was supposed to be trying to achieve, not the personal taste of the person making the comment.
>>
>>3216929
not that guy, but critique is NOT shit, even if it is short.
everything is subjective. if you can't stand someone talking about your photos, don't post them.

i personally have grown a lot as a photographer thanks to these quick ramblings from random people on /p/.
sadly, critique posts have almost vanished recently, and there is really not much of a point posting without them.

ok but not too good. for using the house's roof as an abstract element it's lines are not geometrical enough the way you captured it. an improvement was if the roof was parallel to the meadow's horizon and the stuff on the right wasn't showing. also the sky looks somewhat out of place and distracting. the clouds look great but it is slightly too bright and a bit too colorful, especially considering the moody tones in the rest of the picture. i like the concept and idea of this shot but the execution ruins it a bit, the less elements, the more exact they have to be.
also i think a lot of your critique was short but spot on, however some was just superficial and arrogant.

I like this a shot. It's not orthodox because you have two competing areas, the strong image of mother and daughter (or what I assume to be) and the leading lines taking you away into a high contrast area. Might be an idea to have the leading lines converge on your subject.

thanks guys, I made a few other shots. the thing is that the occasion was unique since there is a river running which you can see in the pictures but it was almost dried out.

if you look at the columns you can actually tell by how much the water level descended, it was pretty amazing to see.

Nice and soft. Good use of overcast weather

>>3217283
>>3217290
I prefer the second one as it's more dynamic and less obvious/blunt which makes me study the image
I'd love a person or two on there for context though

>>3217293
Those clouds could be a thousand times more interesting in this shot
There are also too many intentional mistakes at the bottom half to look like anything other than mistakes
Nice noise and tones though

>>3217454
I love the exposure on the background/top clouds and cityline. Really adds to the distance and drama

>>3217480
Nice and soft and sharp but the foreground is too dark to be a foreground

>>3217509
Nothing is in focus. Try again

>>3217582
Technically good but extremely boring. Focus is also off.

>>3217652
Also technically decent but completely boring. Light is the only good thing in here.

>>3217708
Doesn't work for me but I'm sure this has appeal to many here

>>3217862
Underrated. Could benefit from a tighter crop I expect.

>>3217870
Lovely work on the mountain but the clouds are uninteresting and the cars shouldn't be there. Nice though, I like this

>>3217874
Definitely needs a subject

>>3218183
Really well done. Something about the foliage at the bottom screams camera-phone though. Perhaps some burn to the rear of the floor to create depth.

>>3218188
Grass is far too sharp, tent isn't prominent enough to create a scene

>>3218195
Really well done. A little uninteresting

>>3218386
Made me pause and study but ultimately it's not saying anything

>>3218460
Lacks in depth and dominance because of the lack of an angle/better use of light. I'd also like those people sharper to distract less (usually I'd say the inverse)

>>3218494
Get higher or use diagonals to give this distance. The hills are the best part of this and they're wasted

>>3218499
Much better angle and use of light. I'd like a tighter crop but great choice of tone and light

>>3218531
Pick one subject. Give this a full dynamic range too.
>>
>>3212902
perth fag
>>
>>3222841
I thought the subject was clear does it look like there's more than one?
>>3218531
>>
>>3222852
No. If your subject is the guy then crop until he's more than 3% of the frame, adjust focus, contrast, exposure etc accordingly for said person

Also try to put them in something other than a shitty angle and awkward position with shitty facial expression. Even drawing attention to the muscles in the legs would've helped

Other than telling you to kill yourself, I'd like to give some insight into why everyone hates this photo. Consider this, literally all of us have seen this image before. Looking up at a power line near some trees. Everyone has seen your picture before you even showed it to us. That's why everyone is saying it's a bad photo. There's nothing special enough about it to contribute anything. You say it's your favorite because it's your first photo, which is perfectly fine. But do know that you can't give us that feeling or context. A good photo will get a reaction out of someone without having to explain its significance. You'll likely find that most of your beginning photos will have these same issues with them. Don't worry though, you're still developing your style. Just keep shooting, find what works and what doesn't, and maybe this time next year you'll truly have something of quality to share here.
