Would this have been served better by a smaller aperture? Ever since I got an 85mm I have been bokeh whoring out the ass, I don't wanna fall for the meme though. Could the shrubbery have used a little more definition? Also what do you gois do for posing/directing your models or friends?

Sorry if my vernacular isn't correct with this post. I am an amateur in all things, and only really know 3d cg terminology. I came here for an image to putt around with while learning the new gimp 2.10 release (image related).
>Would this have been served better by a smaller aperture? Ever since I got an 85mm I have been bokeh whoring out the ass, I don't wanna fall for the meme though.
Meh, I like the effect. The cliche is very real, but it does look good so... meh?
>Could the shrubbery have used a little more definition?
Nah, I like contrast rather than definition in the background. You get the feeling of detail without pulling the eye towards specific shapes IMO.
>Also what do you gois do for posing/directing your models or friends?
Depends what you are doing. Professional clothing models do very specific poses. You can get away with pretty much anything if you are just being artsy... That said, I'd suggest looking into animation related character posing/movement (more specifically "lines of action"). This might be something that the model themselves would need to know, but I guess the photographer knowing it wouldn't hurt. This is the same idea that ballet dancers use when "posing" in their dances and the same idea that body builders use for their tournament poses as well.

Last post's image is just a quick unsolicited touch up of your image (obviously)...
Processing steps using GIMP 2.10:
>increased saturation
>Gaussian blurred a duplicate layer (roughly 25% opacity)
smooths skin, hides artifacts, etc. Ruins edges though so we do next step.
>desaturated and then high passed another duplicate layer (roughly 25% opacity as well, if I remember correct)
Kind of redraws edges and reflections, but not really... hard to explain. I find it adds a very sutble "cartoon edge" (helps pop the model off the background).
>merged both down using overlay blend(or maybe it was a grain merge, I forget) because my computer is a piece of shit and can't work with too many big layers (had to reduce a quarter of the original size just to work with it, lol)
>Added a soft glow filter at a fairly low opacity to a duplicate layer (merged with lighten only blend)
I'm a bit iffy about this one. I mean, I like it, but I think I messed it up a little. Should have done some masking. You can see the glow on parts of her shirt and, more importantly, it can be seen on her finger nails. My goal with it was to make the Fresnel pop and to add more contrast into the background.
>modified the images "temperature" using GIMP's new colour temp. option.
Great tool. Happy they added it. Worked really easy, though I may have over done it a tiny touch. Really made the orangey red of the bridge's wood and the dirty show through (adds a great contrast with the green trees).
>finally I added a subtle vignette (IMO)

I think that is everything besides the secret mix of herbs and spices (by that I mean the random experimentation and very, very tiny image specific tweeks). Pretty sure I over did the saturation/temperature slightly cuz her knee came out a little too red, but other than that I'm mostly happy.

I am by no means a professional, but here is my humble opinion regarding the good/bad from your end...

Good:
>I like that you kept the bridges/walk ways posts in frame
I went to crop the image, but changed my mind afterwards because without the posts its hard to instinctively/quickly tell that she is on a wood walkway without inspect the walkway itself (i.e. taking your eyes off the images focus).
>I like the fact that you kept some of the tiny debris in focus around her
Being able to see that the nearby the green specs are leaves means that my brain doesn't have to hurt when I try to figure out what the green specs on the dirt path are... This point is more for other pictures like this since a forest would obviously have leaves in it, but it still helps here.
>I actually like the outfit
I think the pink contrasts the trees nicely without making it look like a Christmas photo. The white and black get lost behind the pink so they really don't factor in... IMO

Bad:
>saturation
I don't know much about camera photography so I don't really know what happened here. Haven't run into an issue like that with my 3d cg stuff... That said, even just bumping the saturation on the image made a world of difference (you probably knew this tho since I assume that is a raw image).
>the ratios don't feel right
I forget what they are called collectively (golden ratios?). Some parts of the images line up with some of the ratios, but none of the ratios fit perfectly (donno if you were trying for any of them though, and this is really nit pick, but it does help). I fell like her face should be aligned with a horizontal third and her knee with the opposite third, and maybe the bridge posts slightly lower to align with the thirds again... This is super nit picky tho as I'm kind of looking for more to say, lol.

Anywho... I like the image. Turned out nice. Was a pleasure using it to relearn GIMP. Good luck with your photography!

Nice pic, it responds really well to a little post processing. I love the way old stone structures look when you sharpen them up a little, and the blue green colour palette feels real nice once you bump up the saturation.

I can't decide if I would have liked to see this without the city in the background. feels like it would tell a cool/mysterious story if the buildings weren't visible. Like a secret ruin lost to time or something... But the contrast of "newer" and very old is also pleasing.

You did a nice job framing the picture. I might have knelt down like a foot just to lift the background shore (feels like it should be at the upper thirds line), but this is nit picking.

Was a fun picture to mess with. I love the palette.

Thats an interesting structure. You had the right idea using it as your subject...
The main issue I have is that I didn't know what I was looking at right off the bat. In fact, my first instinct was that you had tilted the camera sideways. After inspecting the image I can guess that it is the underside of a bridge (the coloured warning thing gave it away)... But thats the issue. I had to figure out what I was looking at before I could enjoy the image. My suggestion is to include a "landmark" in the picture (not a literal landmark, but something thats really easy to identify so people know what they are looking at right off the bat). I assume that the coloured thing had a label with the bridges clearance, yes? Something like that might be a good "landmark."

Also the tiny hint of colour at the very edge of the image is a little distracting. Something like that needs to be either focused on or cropped (in an otherwise colourless image, at least).

Decent subject matter that could have been framed "clearer." Interesting to look at, but a little disorientating at first.

>>3292109
Again, interesting structure; very nice building. However, I feel like there are two issues. The first is that the front face of the building is under lit compared to the roof. My instinct when opening the image was to look at the roof, then the sky, then the background building, and then bright grass, water, etc. I get the feeling you wanted me to look at the center building's facade, but it just seemed so drab relative the the rest of the image. I'd also try to center the building a little better, but that can be fixed in post with an image like this...

That said, I bet if you went back to that very same spot on an overcast day and took the exact same picture, that you'd end up with a much more appealing picture. Without the bright sky to steal the viewers attention it'd be really easy to focus of the facade... Maybe even a night picture with those lamps turned on?

Wow man thank you for the very full answer! I unironically did the saturation just to try it out but I agree this image is better off with what you did.
>>
>>3292129
Thanks! I'll keep it in mind next time i go out and take pictures; I'll definitiely try to get a picture of the building in better lighting.

>I unironically did the saturation just to try it out
Ah, I understand now. From what I understand that style works best with artificial colours. Green and brown look too natural so the lack of vibrancy confuses the subconscious IMO. I look at that picture and my mind says "its a sunny say in a nature park, why are the colours so muted?" Basically, the post processing is acting against the image's story. She is lounging in the sun on what appears to be a nice day, but the lowered saturation makes it seem dreary. Take that exact same picture in an underground walkway with artificial lighting and the lowered saturation would accentuate the pictures story instead... Hopefully that all makes sense.

I am sure there is lots of ways to make lowered saturation look good, but the one I am most familiar with is David Fincher's movies. He loves steely blue, crushes nature colours with shadow, and sucks a some saturation out of most scenes. He also loves cloudy days too (I don't know if he films on overcast days or does it in post tho).

Might be worth looking into his style if you like the low saturation look.

Don't listen to him. The image has potential...

Pic related is me messing with it in Gimp (I ain't saying its any good; just proving that I was fiddling with it). Just a list of things I noticed/did:
>too cold for a sunny summer day
She almost looks a tiny bit blue in your picture. Pic related is an increase to image temp with a tiny bump to red and overall saturation. I assume this is because most of her in in shadow.

>there wasn't enough glow on the subject and foreground IMO
The background seems super bright and glowy compared to the subject. I added a very low opacity circular blur to smear the foreground leaves (swirl was focused on her face) and a little bit of soft glow to everything. I think it brings the foreground and background in line "seasonally" (makes them both look like a bright summer day).

That said, this means her hair doesn't separate from the background very well. The bright blonde on top of the blown out sunny background looses its edge (at least it did in mine). Just changing the angle of the camera ever so slightly so the edge of her hair was over that blue would have helped IMO.

>Her teeth aren't lit right
They feel dingy (and ended up a little cartoony in my edit). I don't know if you did a little work to them as well or what happened, but they lost a lot of definition. It might be lighting, tho its hard to say. What I do know is that without a strong highlight they end up looking flat... I tried messing around with them to add a tiny highlight, but it didn't look right since her face was in obvious shadow.

>blacks weren't black enough IMO
I assume that means over exposed (I come from the world of 3d so exposure isn't something I've dealt with much). I bumped up the black in my edit, but tried not to mess with the contrast as the whites were alrdy white enough (especially after the softglow).

Any who... I like the picture. Was fun messing with it. Hopefully some of this helps.

a wonderful picture anon, i would even buy a print of it, if i had a place to hang it at my place. I just have one question, why did you took it with an aperture of 18? as far as my newbie (1y experience) mind goes, you should try to mind any f number greater than f13. Or is it just a /p/ meme aswell?

>Any tips on studio lighting?
I like a hard light, a sharp rim light and a very, very soft fill for black and white... But this is personal preference.
>probably need a second light.
You essentially have one. It looks like you are using a reflective surface as a diffuse fill light.

Also try not to light the black sheet behind the subject if at all possible. It can always be cleaned up later, but you might be able to save yourself 15min of work by moving the sheet back a couple feet or something.

>>3292488
>Thoughts?

The fact that the middle and left reflection of light aren't perfectly vertical triggers me. Nice colour palette tho. Is this a composite? The perfect alignment of the far shore with the hand rail seems too good to be true especially when the one part of the handrail jumps up slightly. Just wondering

> The background seems super bright and glowy compared to the subject.
I’m assuming this means I should have cranked up my flash to brighten the model more?

> I don't know if you did a little work to them as well or what happened
I did mess with the teeth to try and whiten them. Basically I painted over them with a white brush on another layer, set the mode to saturation and played with the opacity slider I still it looked more natural.

Any ideas on how I could whiten teeth better in the future?

>I’m assuming this means I should have cranked up my flash to brighten the model more?
I'm going to be honest, I don't know. I haven't done real life photography (I'm just here to look at cool pictures and to find stuff to practice photo manipulation on). My limited experience is with rendering engines... I'd just put a light near her face within the 3D scene (we get to cheat like that, lol). I assume that would be the same as cranking up the flash, but take this advice with a grain of salt.

>Any ideas on how I could whiten teeth better in the future?
This I do know... First you want to up the teeth's value. You'll have to be careful here to not ruin the shadows between the teeth. When you do that you'll notice two colours pop out; brown and pink (stains and gums). You want to mostly desaturate the brown. If the pink stand out to much than brush its value down slightly and desaturated it a touch to smooth the transition to gums. The value of the teeth is what makes it look bright. Only desaturating will make them look grey.

The key here is to retain the shape; adding a highlight helps reinforce the tooth's shape, and it also adds a sparkle. The key with highlights is that they aren't just an increase to value and that they aren't just white. A highlight is reflected light; If your subject is lit with blue light than the reflected highlight will be an blue as well; If the subject is lit by sunlight, than the highlight will be a warm, delicate orange, etc (this isn't true for metals, but teeth aren't metal). Use the eye dropper on the brightest point in the image.

Also highlight on very reflective surfaces are usually sharp; use a brush with only a tiny amount of feathering.

Pic related has an attempt to add definition back into her teeth (been messing around with the image to try out new GIMP features). Its a subtle effect, but when you compare it to the originally posted version, you can see that they really pop out. Hope this helps.

I suppose I should add that the tooth's highlight should be as bright as the light hitting that tooth; not as bright as the brightest spot in the image (eyedropping that spot just gets you the light's colour).

Also the increase to the value should be increased less on teeth near the back. This one might be obvious, but is still worth mentioning.

>I’m assuming this means I should have cranked up my flash to brighten the model more?
If you wanted to bring the model's brightness more in line with the background brightness, you either:
1. crank up the power setting on your flash and stop down the aperture - this brings down the brightness of the background and keeps the subject brightness the same
2. or you increase you shutter speed, if you weren't using the maximum sync speed already. Again, this will darken the background and keep your subject the same brightness.

Personally I don't think you have to do either. The photo looks fine, on a contrasty summery day your eyes expect a bright background. The bright background, contrasty light etc. contribute to the feeling of a summer day. I'm not sure making everything soft and uniformly lit would look better.

>I'm not sure making everything soft and uniformly lit would look better.
You might be right here. The more I fiddle with the image the less I like the glow on her face... I think it was just the hint of blue her skin that I really didn't like. Warming her skin tone up a touch and adding a hint of blue to the image's shadows seems to do the trick better than adding a soft glow... I think there just wasn't enough contrast in the blue spectrum between her face and the bush's shadows. This made her look a little cold on top of that sunny background.

You should only be using the saturation slider if your image is really washed out or you want to drastically change the look of it. You should play around with the vibrance filter, and the saturation of individual colors in the hsl section. That way you can bring up tones that you want to bring out more without overblowing the ones that are already where they should be.

Malapropism or Portmanteau?
I keep seeing this, genuinely curious.
>>
>>3292993
Thicc.
>>
>>3292993

You're doing the entire world a disservice by indulging this beluga.
>>
>>3293002
He was really anxious about taking a bad photo so he had to compose himself first...

If I had to guess I'd say that he thinks "composure" is the act of focusing on composition. Which is a grammatical error in the line of malapropism.

>>3292922
Did you up the saturation of the green pixels? I'm trying to figure our why the moss on the far left feels a little off. I think there is just slightly too much colour in what should by the moss's shadows. Did you brighten the green? Maybe that's it.

I "fixed" (IMO) the issue by using the curve adjustment to slightly blacken the darkest 8th of the green curve. This was done on a separate layer and then blended into the original with a mask so only the green moss was effected (the leaves in the background don't seem to have this issue and that modification of the curve effected some other shadows as well).

That said, I could just be bugging. Maybe that is just how moss just looks, lol. I mean, it'd make sense for such a delicate structure to allow light through it so its shadows wouldn't be as dull as other materials.

Only nit picking because I like the image. Well done.
>>
>>3292993 Not bad at all. Thicc parts might benefit from more flattering light or something.
>>

I like it, but you should have waited until someone else walked past. Old guy looks like he either doesn't want to be photographed or doesn't enjoy walking.

>>3292776
I like the first one more, and you have the same problem here. She look like someone trying to shuffle past anews anchor doing a broadcast from a street corner.

>>3292793
If you are going to add blue in post atleast use a gradient to mask. Other than that 10/10. Best image in thread.

>>3292798
I like it, but I'd also black out the grey behind his head, and his left shoulder is either under defined or should be blacked out. Right now it looks like a hair coming off the side of his face.

Too much sprinkler. I get what you were going for (catching the sun's rays in the water droplets), but the effect gets lost when there is that much sun light getting caught. If it had just been the sprinkler furthest to the left I bet it would have been really nice.

>>3292843
Focus should have been further down the line of trees. The transition to light after that main shadow might have been a good spot to set it.>>3292871
>over processed and too much unnatural contrast.
Exaggerating the things I mentioned in the post was kind of the point of the image... But I get what you're saying.

>>3292893
I really like this.

>>3292899
Slightly disorientating. The line in the background makes it feel like a dutch angle, but I guess its just some kind of hill based illusion.

>>3292901
Very pretty. I just wish there was something other than a monster can at the bottom. You had the right idea, but I'm just not a fan of overtly including products in images. This obviously isn't an advertisement, but my subconscious still wants me to tune the product out like I usually would.

Her "lines of action" converge at a rather sharp angle [pic related]. You could ease the transition by having her lean back slightly or potentially turn her so her knees are closer to the camera than her hips (Honestly, here are an infinite numbers of way to smooth that line; just listing a couple).

It looks like you used a morph tool to grow her butt which pushed the line of action into the bottom right and into a tighter curve (not saying that's what you did, just saying that's what it looks like).

Sharp angles can be used for certain effects, but I find them unflattering in female beauty shots (IMO). The tend to be gratuitous in their display of attributes (this might be why her butt looks morphed).

It's actually rather interesting, and you've filled the frame, generated depth and contrast, not fucked exposure. BUT, the camera saved this. You don't need f11 EVER on crop unless you're on the surface of the sun or some shit and have completely run out of shutter speed. Your iso is crazy high as a result, and your shutter speed a little low. I'm absolutely certain you could have used f4 and your autofocus would have handled it and still given you enough DoF at that distance. Still, yougot the shot.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah when I had taken this I hadn’t read about aperture or anything and was fiddling around the entire time with different settings. I’ve since tried to read as much about the “mechanics” of photography as possible.

I find it hard to take canyon photos like this. There's really not much interesting about it. It's like someones vacation pictures.

But do get that d500. If it's something your interested in keep doing it. Once you shoot with an actual camera instead of a phone it makes you think more critically of your shots.

Final attempt. I need to find another picture to practice on before my eyes go crossed. I kind of want to do another and dial a couple things back just a smidgen, but for the most part I'm liking the way it turned out. It's a really nice picture to edit; lots of stuff that can be tweaked (though they don't necessarily need it). I do like minimalism, but it isn't as fun to play with after the fact.

Just wondering if this is still too processed? I can easily see all my edits, because I've been staring at them for a couple days now (off and on), so I can't tell whats too much anymore, lol.

Process:
>Did a little work on her teeth
Mostly just brushed the saturation back up where the gums were supposed to be. This was the issue with the original poster's edit. I also added a tiny highlight to accentuate their shape, and brushed a little tiny amount of blue into their shadows though it doesn't show much (got the idea from looking at pictures of white teeth on google images).
>used an auto colour enhance filter
I wouldn't suggest using this. I've used it on other pictures and it is usually way too much colour. It just happened to only really effect the flowers in this picture and I kind of liked the way it looked (might be a little too much now though; I can't decide).
>bumped the image's colour temp up
For anyone using the GIMP 2.10's new colour temp filter I'd suggest using the option menu that drops down if you click the arrow beside the sliders. It made it a lot easier to get basically what I was looking for.
>hued the yellow leaves towards green, desaturated green and yellow (yellow was desaturated a lot less than green), and darkened both a touch as well.
Just wanted the leaves to contrast both the flowers and the models face a little more. Couldn't (and didn't want to) get the foreground leaves all the way to green though (pushing it really far caused issues with the overlap on the magenta flowers; you can still sort of see it now).

>used the exposure filter to up the black levels
Created more contrast between the leaves and the flowers/model. Might have over done it a touch, but it feels more like an aesthetic than a mistake (IMO).
>used the curves to bring the black up from 0 and added a little blue to them
Exaggerated the warming effects of the colour temp filter from earlier. Got the idea from watching youtube vids so I wont claim it as my own (I'm assuming its a pretty common thing if their making videos about it).
>tried to add a little detail to her eyes
Followed a youtube video for it, but it ended up being pointless cuz the image resolution was too low to even notice the different.
>added a touch of saturation to her lips and shaped them a little
Wanted to get them closer to the flowers intensity. I wasn't planning to do it, but the failure to add detail to her eyes prompted me to try something else. It isn't perfect, but I its subtle enough to not bother me. The key was to desaturate the white reflection after painting on the lip's saturation. I also added a little little bit of black near the edge of her lips to carve them out a more, and added some shadow to reinforce the shape.
>applied a denoising filter at almost minimum settings
Seemed to work better than the Gaussian blur, but I haven't tried it on enough pictures to know if that is always true (I don't even really know the difference between the two; denoise just looked better on this one IMO).
>applied a lower radius high pass filter to a duplicate layer and softlight merged
Gave some edges back, but not as much as I would have liked. I think I need to read up on these a little more. I've tried high passing a non-blurred layer, but it ends up causing artifacts. Doing it like this doesn't get enough edge back. I don't really know how to solve (accepting recommendations). Might just need to be done on a higher resolution image, but ionno...
[cont'd]
>>
>>3294089
>Created a dulpicate layer, swirl blurred, masked with a radial gradient and merged at 25% opacity (swirl and gradient were focused on model's face)
I wanted to simulate an/accentuate the out of focus effect on the leaves that frame her face. Got lucky that everything else at the images edges could be blurred like that without being too noticeable.
>added a vignette that was almost kind of the same dimensions as the above swirl
The point of these two was to create a frame within a frame. I used a rather obvious vignette because I really don't mind it being visible.
>And finished with a little fiddling that really didn't change much...

Lovely picture; good job, kid... Now hopefully my subconscious is satiated after written this. I've had enough of my OCD compelling me to "restart and do it right this time," lol.

Bants aside... No, GIMP isn't as good as photoshop, and 2.10 is currently unstable (on my linux at least). Just bring it up because GIMP doesn't have the same features (an less features) so I am preventing responses saying "why didn't you use this feature that is only available in photoshop."
>>3293236
Mentioned "frequency separation." I had to look that shit up just to know what he was talking about as it isn't included in GIMP right now (as far as I'm aware of).

Was hoping someone would chime in with program related suggestions since I am too poor for real programs and my ISP keeps sending me angry emails whenever I pirate stuff.

Saved, and set as background... Only issue is that my monitor has a blown out line of pixels that cuts perfectly across the factories in the distance. It feels dirty to display such a nice image on my shoddy hardware, lol.

Because that's where I focused (and the aperture was on 1.8). I like the painting-like look of it.

Welcome to 4chan. Please resize your picture before posting by consideration to 1. Hiroshimoot's server capacity 2. Anon's various internet speed 3. google chrome memory usage 4. certain exotic web browsers than can't adjust a 16mpx picture to fit on screen.

This is /p/ mate, upload in highest quality possible.
Stop being a stupid cunt, there is a 4 meg limit, try to get as close to that as possible.
>>
>>3295167

Considering 90% of the posts on /p/ are retarded tripfag drama and not photos you can probably deal with it.

I dont like black backgrounds in food photog.

Makes me feel like I live in the void. Usually the restaurant in the background or living room or kitchen look nicer.

Besides that its pretty solid
