So I remember a while back some Anon attempted to keep /p/ shooting outside our confort zone by trying out a photo challenge. And I wish to revive the idea.
I am not a very good photographer so I'll learn along the way too.
I'm going to base this challenge on the 52 Week Photography Challenge by dogwood photography with some changes to keep it from being the same.
>We'll do it monthly with 4 assignments per month (you can try them in any order you'd like)
>You can post more than 1 photo for each assignment but do try to cover every theme per month
>The themes won't be in the same order as the original list (So you won't be tempted to skip ahead)
>Do try to take new photos (that's the idea isn't it?) Instead of posting from your previous work.
>Have fun!

This first month we are doing only 3 themes (since it's June 10th) and we are starting with a difficult one that I hope will have interesting results.

>Self Portrait: Start things off right with a "selfie"! Explore the self timer setting on your camera.
>Traditional Landscape: Shoot a beautiful landscape and share it with the world. Find a nice foreground and don't forget the sky.
>Red: Shoot whatever inspires you. Red should be the focus of the image. Don't be afraid to be creative.

Depending on the reception of this challenges I'll keep them going monthly. Go shoot /p/!!
>>

By the way, there are 3 categories for the assignments:
>Portrait:
Portrait photography is really about capturing the essence of a person in an image. A portrait image can range from a classic portrait to candid, or from street photography to a selfie. Each time this category comes up we will dive into a different area of portrait photography. The main focus should always be a person/persons (or maybe a pet).
>Landscape:
This category is pretty broad covering both traditional landscapes, and some non-traditional areas such as urbanscapes. Don’t be afraid to really explore your surroundings in this category. If the focus is the environment you are in, it will qualify as Landscape in this category.
>Artistic Impression:
When this category comes up, you really have room to express yourself. You can interpret the assignment literally or figuratively. Unlike the other two categories that are more focused, the main focus of this category is to let your creativity shine.

hmmmm.......

Thanks op! With portraits take into account some of us are hesitant to post people on /p/. Maybe include that blurring is an option or other photographic tricks and means right for the shot in a creative way.

That is fair. We're all ugly and nobody cares who we are, with that said, I understand so let's say it's permitted but not encouraged. Maybe blur the eyes only or something minimal. Or stay anonymous by being creative!

I appreciate the enthusiasm but c'mon anon, let's see new pictures!!

Yes!! Go anon and shoot!

I'm kinda only free on weekends so I'll shoot and share on those days but I'll come here daily if possible to check on your progress guys.

Stuck.
Stuck behind a food delivery truck unloading its nutritious cargo to a local restaurant.

Stuck in a dead end low wage food service job.

Stuck tightly between two hard places.

There is no escape in sight living pay check to pay check. Upward economic movement frozen so deeply that not even the bright Miami sun can thaw it. Miami is not just a poor city, it’s nearly the poorest. Miami’s median income is the second lowest at 46,946 USD out of the 25 largest metro areas (Tampa is the lowest). With Miami’s economy depending disproportionately on tourism, the impact of disasters like Hurricane Irma on the local economy goes from terrible to catastrophic.

Nice one except I don't like the bright shine on the glasses stand and opening. Also the framing is a bit boring too. I really enjoy light and dark within the red and think the framing should concentrate on that. Again, good post!

Try some macro of that, could look trippy.

I decided to start with the selfies. I saw this beautiful photo of Craig Ferguson and his puppy and I wanted something like that! Edited in Silver Efex from the Nik Collection, that software is fun!

What's your understanding of portraiture and how do you differentiate this from selfies?
>>
>>3310900
If that's him in the pic it is indeed a self portrait. Just not a good one.
>>
>>3310904
>Just not a good one.
I feel like it's very revealing about the person and it stresses the situation. There was an exhibition in a nearby city that showed portraits of people in everyday situations of the last 50 years. Every shot showed the people at a characterizing activity.
>>
>>3310911
Well, maybe I'm just too stupid to appreciate it then. I think it's a shit photo, but I'm hardly an authority.
>>
>>3310900
There is no actual difference, selfie is just short of self portrait but we tend to give the title of self portrait to a more elaborated, well though, well composed photo.

>>3310911
So it is a self portrait? Is it yours? Because if it is it's weird you say -the person- and not -me-

>>3310911
>>3310918
To be fair it IS bad, from a technique perspective the chairs, the lights above, the tables draw the eye and not the alleged subject who seems more like some random who got caught accidentally.
Keep trying whoever posted it!
>>
>>3311049

Gonna have to agree with this dude. There's nothing wrong with putting a self-portrait in context, but right now the context is taking up all focus and you can barely even see the supposed subject. The thought isn't too bad, but the execution is poor.
>>
>>3310031 Here.
I went for an environmental portrait just not to show my face. That was the starting point for further decisions. No context involved and no interest in doing a better portrait post here. There are a few things that bothered me too, including the framing. Under the circumstances, I think it's not bad, but it's not good either.

It's just that it's so far detached from the human subject that it can't really be called a selfie. It doesn't seem like deliberate censoring of the subject, and more like an accident that there's a person there at all.

Not fair to shit on you without posting anything back though. Happened to walk past these two earlier today, but didn't have the balls to stick around to get a lower, straighter angle so it ended up looking like a snapshit. Also ended up overediting it, so I'll probably redo the red challenge.

It's super weird to look at oneself in photos (I'm not used to take selfies at all)
