Pretty good. Just something seems boring
>>
These are reasonably good overall and show creative vision. There is however room for improvement. I can't say for certain what exactly are oversights and what are intentional, so I'll critique based on the decisions I would have made.

>>3317618
I like the whole rustic-sunset-cornfield-dock vibe. The light on her hair is good, but the sky looks a little blown out for my tastes, but perhaps you were going for that. The object jutting out from behind her head is distracting and breaks up her silhouette. You might also have gotten closer to her, and lower down so that her shoulders might align with the horizontal line of the horizon.

>>3317620
The bottom left corner of this image is excellent, nice soft colors on the plants and the sun hits the girl well. The other parts of the image are less interesting and more wasted space or pure whiteness, they convey little. I think this could have been improved with tighter framing of her and the plants. Also her pose looks awkward like shes pooping and her feet are dirty.

>>3317622
Decent enough, but you need to work with the colors more, the greens and browns aren't working together in any way, and the result seems more incidental than deliberate. Also his shirt is blown out, and I think I see some chromatic aberration on his shoes.

>>3317623
We're getting better here. I like the bottom right of this photo, the greens work well with the rocks and his pose is good. I think this might be stronger if you had been standing farther to the right, and framed him more tightly on the rocks against that field of green, rather than the boring mountain you currently have on the right. bretty good though.
>>
>>3317635
Continued

>>3317625
I like this one too, the girl is qt and the wall of light behind her gives a nice shape. I think it would be better with the sky brought down a touch, but what this photo really needs the most is retouching. You have this beautiful girl, but you need to help her out a bit, fix the blemishes on face, and clean up the stray hairs on her chest and arm. Also maybe take some of the orange-yellow out of the shadows on her face, it looks a little unnatural.

This is an overall decent set, and I think you can go places with this. I would still say you're lacking a certain je ne sais quoi, none of these images really compel or excite me, the last one is close though. I get a real south california asian american skater feel from these, which is good because it means you've managed to capture an aesthetic enough to give me the essence of a culture and place that I have never been a part of. That's really the basis of a lot of great photography, and you've got it down already.

so much effort, such a useless feedback.

>>3317618
the main problem is so obvious that I'm not sure whether you actually are trolling or not.
>>
>>3317900
or a missing nd .. or rather gnd .. as the case may be
>>
>>3317898
Perhaps you're right, but I don't think I can just say that the entire look he's going for it incorrect. I'm going to assume anyone who owns a 85mm 1.2 knows how to keep the sky from blowing out, so I am forced to accept that the choice was deliberate. Or that's how I see it at least. I've seen plenty of beautiful sunset portraits with the sky going supernova like that, but its also equally possible that I'm just a moron. Hard to say.

I like them all although I think some are stronger than others. I dont have any more valuable feedback so I'll just say that I think you should keep at it and experiment with what works to meet your creative vision and what does not. Nice job.

OP here, thanks for the critique

I’ve been experiementing with blown out backgrounds recently which is my main reason of posting. However, I can’t say many of the things I’ve done were intentional. I’ll start experimenting more with the composition of the background with respect to the subject

>>3318351
Example of light used dynamicly and with the subject in mind

The shadows in OPs shots have been lifted to buggery and back which, along with the blown out backgrounds, makes them flat and boring

There's also no attention on the subjects other than the work he's done in post

>>3317622
This is the only one where light has been used on the subjects face and even this I think is accidental

Also never use pure white for portraits and headshots

Stop spending all your time creating scenes and spend more time creating scenes that highlight your subjects
>>
Overall for taking pics of your friends there pretty decent. No one is going to be impressed by these. But keep going. Do some crazy shit. you got the basics down now what? One critique is there a bit over exposed.

I'm gonna give you a really dumb, simple tip which you might already know, but I know I personally did not start doing this until I was a fair bit into photography because I'm retarded.
Viewing a scene with one eye closed flattens what you see, so you'll notice if the background is messing things up for you. I used to only notice my fuckups when I began post-processing my shots, but when I started setting up my shots with one eye I started noticing my poor setups immediately.

The hair is nice. What is that sticking out of her head? A graduated ND would be great here to save the sky.

>>3317620
Same with this one; the bottom half is great but the top is almost a complete waste. Also something about her pose strikes me as unnatural. The arm, I think.

>>3317622
Looks just a little overexposed. There's some pretty bad purple fringing that you can take care of fairly easily in post. In general, I would recommend against white fabrics because they tend to blow out.

>>3317623
This one's my favorite. Pose feels very natural/comfortable. The background is very nice, although again, I would probably recommend trying to bring some of it back, especially in the upper right. More purple fringing.

>>3317625
Fine, I guess.

You've nailed the senior pictures aesthetic. I would recommend trying to get a little more in your frame and not letting stuff blow out into white so much, especially since you seem to be shooting in some really pretty locations. Also, posing; I feel like the first three have weird arm placement. But maybe I'm alone in this.
>>
>>3318351
Pretty cool. I wish we could see his pupils, since I think they would make things more expressive. Framing also feels a little off; I think he should be sitting a little higher up

Imho composition should highlight her expression, and the bottle on the right is distracting. I would rule-of-thirds it, getting rid of the red screw cap.
Also, improve the withe balance of your picture and get rid of some noise to give your granma a more flattering appearance.
If you have the RAW version you can get better results.

Lovely. BUT the object behind her head is super distracting and detracts from the picture.
You're quite far away from her but it works because of the wooden thing leading up to the subject, I like it.

>>3317620
Too blown, too far, the "shitting in the woods" pose doesn't work.

>>3317622
I like it, very happy feeling coming from this guy, clean portrait. Btw I know you're overexposing all of them by choice, but this is just a TINY bit over. His shirt became a reflector, tone it down.

>>3317623
Again, imho you're too far without a proper context around your subject - what are you trying to show us by being so far? Also check your purple chromabs, and the shitting in the woods pose doesn't work (yet again) but this is better than the other one.

>>3317625
another cheerful portrait I like. Edit the blemishes on her cheek, this is probably the least imaginative one of the bunch but it works, it's a clean portrait that feels nice.

in general: all your photos feel really lighthearted and happy, you're doing most of it right. Tone down the overexposure A BIT, there should be no full white, also if you take a wide portrait make it count, make the landscape matter.

You should crop 90% of that white sky. Too much empty space IMO.
>>
>>3317620
Dont forget that the point of a portrait is the subject. These backgrouds are distracting
>>
>>
>>3317618
Nice lighting, composition ok but a bit boring. Could have done the whole thing a bit tighter. Shit growing out of her head looks like Willy Wonkas top hat. CA on the contrasty pants because you're shooting so wide open.
Shoot smaller aperture and get closer to her
>>
>>3329636
Pose is awful. Belly looks bigger than tits in this position. I like that it's not just shot wide open and gives context.
Light isn't bad but I assume this is just a phone snapshot. Not really much of a portrait.
>>
>>3329633
The backgrounds are distracting? Only distracting because the blown out white sky filling half the frame is annoying me.

>>

I don't mind it. I'm guessing she was quite dark and you've brightened it a fair bit to keep her visible and not completely blow out everything behind her. Lighting on her just looks a bit flat. For a shot with no flash it's not too bad.
Maybe a little boring just sitting on the wall looking right at you but a nice shot. The sort of thing I'd take at a nice spot on a holiday or somewhere.
Just wish there was a little bit of angled light with a flash or something to get her facial features a little more contrasty with some shadows.
I think the camera's being held straight but it looks a little off. Fairly sure it's just the wall going slightly downhill.
>>

I should have started by saying I'm not a portrait photographer by any stretch

Thanks senpai. Where did I go wrong? Was it the honesty?
>>
>>3319584
This is terrible advice for the kind of portraiture OP is interested in. Not everything has to be really dynamically lit. Most people looking for cool, flattering photos of themselves would not be happy with a final product made to emphasize every wrinkle in their face.

Really love the in focus crowd as background, works really well.
Too bad for the legs, but decisions.
>>
>>3331676
Too much noise, especially chroma, and hairy arms are a giant no-no in portraits that are supposed to be about beauty. You shoop them out, always. Focus is off, too.

A phone would have taken a better portrait, the composition is alright but what the hell is that noise, you must have underexposed by at least 3 stops.

Posting in the portrait thread since there are 3 recent photo threads, wth.

How did I do? Not the best picture of the bunch, but I started on this one to set the mood for the others (which I still have to edit). I like it, which worries me, as usually when I like something I don't see how terrible it is.

>>

I think the cacti can work well in the frame because it works well with the color palette and the background, but don't let them obstruct the subject. Move them to the outer edges of the frame or even behind her.

why isnt there any goddamn skin texture? Cacti placement is shit, the middle one creates a tangent and it isn't compositionally balanced.

Focus looks off (is it on the hand?) and the hand is too forward looking bigger than it needs to be.

Depth of field looks too shallow exacerbating the above problems. The backlight is alright but since it seems like you haven't used flash or a reflector to cast fill light there's no shadows, no catchlights and the face looks flat and unflattering.

The sunglasses and ring is honestly distracting.

Good. I would have either gone a bit tighter (cut at the shoulders) or a bit wider, since you're just clipping their elbows. Also they feel a bit too cold to me, but that's me.
Sort of pic related. Half assed, dunno if the crop really works, maybe it was better wider, or even tighter than this.

I like the moment you captured, their pose, they're good portraits.

That glass shadow on her face is super distracting and her skin needs retouching. It's serviceable if boring otherwise.
