Well, I couldn't get setup like I'd want to get setup. The three zoomed-out images are from a 500mm f/6.3 mirror lens by itself. EXP 1/4000 and ISO 800. The terrible zoomed in pic is the 500mm lens with a 2x teleconverter and 68mm of extension tubes on it. EXP 1/1000 and ISO 3200. Getting it to focus with that setup requires a good bit of time, which I didn't have. Even with a tripod it is pretty difficult. It needs to be off a tripod and sandbagged to a table. The DOF is razor thin and the focusing mechanism becomes super touchy at that point.

Just let them come to you, man. They are every bit as skittish up here, and this is 300mm on a FF.

>500mm f/6.3 mirror lens with a 2x teleconverter and 68mm of extension tubes

No offense, but that's a mess. It's pushing the optics way too far, and will never give you good results no matter how much setup time you have. No shot in 10 years? Sit down there with the least amount of lens elements between you and it, and wait.

It won't come around the farm animals and if I'm anywhere near the pond where, I can get a lens on the pond, the farm animals are all over the place following me so it never lands. The biggest problem is that it only comes around like 2 times a month and I have a shit load of work to do and can't be stalking it for very long.

>that's a mess

lol Of course it is, but it is fun to do.

Eh, this is what a full-sized crop of it looks like. The lens itself is "soft focus" so high ISO aside, this is the best it will ever get. It is a super cheap Opteka mirror lens after all. Their non-mirror lenses are far better.

I finally got a semi-good shot of that heron. I was testing out a lens I converted while in macro mode when I happened to notice the heron in a section of river. I had enough time to take the lens out of macro setting and crank it to 200mm for a few shots before it bugged out and fly away.

One of our field agents has reported class warfare in this thread.

>>3318665 You there, the crying woman. We understand that you are insecure about your lack of skill and money, and wish to tear down those superior to you. It is commendable, and the /p/arty would like to express its gratitude.

It is our goal to ensure everybody is as mediocre as possible with nobody rising above. Report all earnings and turn in your gear immediately. You will receive your state issued mirror lens and an allowance in due time.

Well, the photo is great for sharpness, but the pose could be better. Animals are hard to work with. The PIP in the corner should be a full size version of part of your main image. Like in >>3317924 he took part of the full sized image and pasted it in to the downsized image to show how clear the full size image really is.

It is the same with this one. You can see that the full size image looks like crap in comparison.

You're just too new to know how wildlife threads go because 100 percent crops are a staple of them. Getting close enough and dealing with weather and lighting and twitchy subjects in an uncontrolled environment make getting sharp clean shots a challenge. People used to demand crops not frown upon them.

I suppose what has changed are the type and quality of posters. Instead of good people trying to get better, we now have snapshitters who are more comfortable burying their heads in the sand because they can't handle the sight of actual quality content. This applies to every thread more and more each day, too.

Posted this before but here's a pip, aye.

First time doing animal/wildlife. Due to the harsh lighting innawoods: set iso to base, -1.6EV, aperture priority. On the day shutter speeds were ok... ish. Some shots got a bit noisy in post tho.

Got a day off work tomorrow. Are wildfowl on a canal considered zoo shots? If you feed them they come too close and kick off.

In my limited experience shooting animals really ups your camera operating game. Pets not so much, my cat wants to know why I'm looking at him through a black box and comes over to investigate. Thankfully my cat isn't really interested in birbs, he is obsessed with killing rats. Are rats wild animals?

Anyhoo... I'll try to photo animal's eyes.

Well, "wild" in "wildlife" suggests they are not tame enough to approach, not farm animals, and not caged/zoo/etc. If they are being fed by humans for photos, but still, "wild," I'd call them "prostitutes".

>"prostitutes"
Yeah but all animals won't pass up on a free lunch.

I suppose capturing images of animals in their "natural enviromnment/habitat" is the closest I'll get to wild here.

Most birds just stop off here for a bit, then fly for stoopid miles just because. Not so tame but partial to a breadcrumb.

The Scottish Wildcat is something I'd love to photo but I think even ambush would struggle with that.
>>
>>3319164
>Well, "wild" in "wildlife" suggests they are not tame enough to approach,
No. Do you think that a grizzly bear in Alaska that hasn't learned to fear humans and saunters right into your camp to smell around your kitchen area is somehow any less "wild" than any other bear?

>not farm animals,
Yes. This is literally what the dictionary definition of the word means. Wildlife separates those species of animals that have been domesticated, like dogs, cattle, chickens and so forth.

>not caged/zoo/etc.
Nowhere in the definition are cages mentioned.

Not shitting on the photo, but that seems to be what the issue was. I will use AF points to get a subject in focus, but will always grab the ring and fine tune before shooting. Fuck using "focus and recompose" for birds too, as you'll miss too many shots. If you're not perfectly steady either, AF points can fuck you over as the points wander. Your eye can process the situation a lot quicker.

Since this is a meme thread, I'll make a blog post. Been cruising around since last Saturday looking for spots to find moose later in the year... just looking for droppings and tracks. Really want to get in close come rutting season and need to find spots that have some escape routes. Generally speaking, inland is better to find moose but I would like to try the water angle... less walking, no worrying about coyotes, no having to string my food up. I love getting salt all over everything, too. It's really good for camera gear.

Bump with mother coot.

I've been tempted to get a polarizing filter to reduce reflections. However, the reflections mask the robbed mopeds, shopping trollies and general detritus that lurks beneath the water.

Saying that though the canal is probably the cleanest it's been in 200 years.

The CA on this lens is killer. Doesn't help that I was taking the pic through scrub and it is all backlit too boot.

No, it motivates me to save up for a better lens when I can see how bad the unwanted CA is in the one I have now. Kit lenses were a mistake.

Is that the 70-300mm af-p? The shills on youtube were saying it's better at the long end.

That CA is quite funky. I was shopping for a wide angle lens a while back. I liked the look of the new Tamron 10-24mm but the edges were smeared with a bright red line anywhere there was contrast. Spoke to a few people in shops and even a Tamron rep at a photo show. They all said the same thing:
>YOU CAN FIX IT IN PHOTOSHOP!
I don't understand how this fix works exactly but surely less "fixing" is better for overall image quality. Iridescent colours on a birds feather could look like aberations to the algorithm.

The CA in >>3320418 is the "AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f4.5-6.3G ED" at 300mm as is this photo. The CA in >>3320484 is the same thing looking through a magnifying glass, giving it extreme CA.

Was a bit busy and forgot to watch this.
Nice.

Do you ever do the sailing? Pain in the arse when you have to tack against the wind but quiet. That outboard sounds noisy but I suppose the animals are sort of used to it (if not it will be a minor annoyance for most animals).

Just googled "Snow Leopard" and it seems there aren't that many 'round here. Rats don't like to be photographed. Maybe I'll try them instead (seriously, kek).

>AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f4.5-6.3G ED
Sorry to hear about that. The shills said it was ace. I got a bit jealous and wanted one.

The 70-300mm vr ff version is a tiny bit soft at 300mm .If you are interested in wildlife on a budget the 55-200mm kit lens was pretty good. Super cheap now.

Long story short... if you are into nature sell your kit and buy a knackered d300 with a buggered long lens (D mount).
>>
>>3320541
>sell your kit

I might get about $120 at best from both kit lenses combined, if I wanted to move them and not sit around on them. I'd rather not get a D300 anyway.
>>
>>3320418

Every lens I've ever used has CA when shooting branches against a sky like that. It's only really an issue if you crop too much. Even your eyes have it. I have 20/10 vision and can still see it when I look at the black and white curtains when they are back lit by the sun. But yeah, even 70-300 4.5-5.6 is a lot better than that lens.

>>3320536

Nah, no sailing really. Just outboard or canoe. I just use the boat to get places inaccessible by foot, so don't worry about scaring animals. Find a spot, drag it ashore and set up camp. It will sit for days under wraps until I head back out.

Got my best (and closest) ever shot of a Great Horned Owl today. Have been really good finding this particular one, but still haven't found the nest. Anyway, love the shot... filled the frame, right at golden hour. I'll do a photo dump later in the year instead of bothering with wildlife threads.

>>3320541
>55-200mm

55-300 VR is excellent for the price, too. I found it to be pretty sharp.
>>

I liked >>3320612, >>3320603 and >>3320596. The others didn't wow me like those did. I personally think that sea lions or seals or whatever they're called are ugly as sin, so you need a particularly good portrait or a photo showing them doing something particularly interesting to catch my eye.

It's easy to forget that wildlife photography isn't just about documenting your experience in nature or identifying the animal later on. It's photography, just like any other type of photography, and needs the same amount of thought behind the composition as anything else. The only difference is your subjects can't take your directions, so you end up stuck with photos of animals acting like dumb animals, looking the wrong direction, and running away from you. Just like anything else, it's easy to do, difficult to master.

That's an old dead tree trunk, anon. See the other tree up above with a similar color trunk? Just beside the other tree, straight up the hill from the dead trunk there's a piece of root still there from the dead tree. The tree fell over and slide down to its current position a long time ago. I'm sure it was a good tree. F

I know this is a bit big, but I'm posting it since posting 60+ trash photos would be far worse.

I was trying to do some birds in flight photography with my Nikon D3400 and the AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f4.5-6.3G ED kit lens at f/8. I tried every setting possible for manual and auto and could not get a single photo in focus in the 200mm+ range. The AF just seemed to search the entire time regardless of how many point of focus there were or the settings. Manual focusing was too slow since the focus ring isn't a physical connection. To top it off, when you focus one direction it is slower than focusing the other direction; one is more sensitive than the other it seems like a PC mouse that has left and right sensitivity really slow but up and down sensitivity too fast.

So, I switched lenses to an old plastic Tamron 70-210mm f/4 Adaptal-M42 mount I converted to F-mount. It took some practice, especially since the focusing for it has backwards directions from the NIKKOR 70-300mm. I cranked it to 210mm and sat there trying to snap pics of anything flying. I practiced for half an hour and was finally getting pretty good at it.

Here's the lackluster results. Settings for all were exp 1/1000 ISO400 f/8. I should have used exp 1/500, ISO800, or f/4 but I wanted to remove as much motion blur as possible and not delve into ISO noise hell. It was about 7:30pm so things were getting darker. They are all cropped, but not resized, hence the size variance. Some are in perfect focus for the lens and movement, but most are almost in perfect focus or "close."

>The tl;dr version, I'm a bit miffed at my setup. I've exhausted the entire range of possible settings combinations for the D3400 with the 70-300mm f4.5-6.3G kit lens and could get a single fucking photo in focus. I can't even zone focus with it very well since getting a bird in flight at that sweet spot of focus is pretty much extreme luck one would fly into the zone. Yet, the cheap ass vintage lens from the 1980s can work well.

Also, does anyone know of a lens that can do well manually at 300mm or with AF on the D3400? If you have that same 70-300mm lens on a different camera, how well does the AF perform in such fast focusing situations? I don't mean doing well one or two times, but getting fairly consistent shots at high speed while using burst as well.
>>
>>3321293
No lens on earth would have made any of these shots good so don't feel bad about your gear. You have to do more than just point your camera at something and press the shutter release.
>>
This is the worst wildlife thread I have ever seen.
>>
>>3321293
Several things I want to point out...First is that the photos you posted look like shit. Most are out of focus or look like they were cropped to the point of barely having any pixels on the subject. 200mm is generally considered too short for shooting these kinds of flying songbirds, although I've got to recognize your patience for at least trying to do it with a manual lens.

Regarding your Nikon equipment, the D3000 series has worse autofocus than the D5000 and D7000 series, meaning that when you try to track a moving bird in flight, first, it takes skill regardless of camera body, but even if you are able to keep your center focus point covering the bird's body the entire time, these cameras are just inherently less accurate than other cameras. Next thing to point out is that the original AF-S 70-300mm zoom wasn't very sharp over 200mm, so I assume the AF-P shares a similar optical design to that...although I've read some reports to the contrary, and it seems likely that the lens has significant sample variation, being one of Nikon's lenses that are made in China. It's also a fact that the D3000 series has no AF microadjustments, so it could just be the case that your body and lens combination will never be sharp.

>>3321295
No 300mm manual focus lens will "do well" with birds in flight.

I actually like this. The only thing I don't like is the plant and box(?) in the way. Otherwise, I like the composition and juxtaposition. Where I live people raise peafowl, but they roam free all over. When I raised them, they were in a huge aviary with giant netted ceiling.

Got mama in same shot, but it didn't came out well. I'm on 25mm, both stood few meter from me in broad daylight. Took few quick ones, and went a far way around. Sometime you feel better not pushing.
Was maybe ten meters from young buck a few days later. Fresh antlers, meadow, crickets behind and wind to my face, crept very close to the guy before he spotted me. Could have a headshot with ease with 100mm, alas not even a phone with me.

Those are all full size. Reducing jpeg compression doesn't help much at all. They are all cropped and ISO makes everything fuzzy anyway when cropped that much. This one is uncropped and full size, but compressed enough to post. If you view it full size to pixel peep, the sky itself looks like dogshit due to ISO.

Beats shitposters. Just apprecate birbs. If you're worried about ugly iso sky, do simple postprocessing trick, extreme noise reduction, you've not a lot of detail anyway, then you fill in a bit of grain and you get pretty noise instead. Should work even better on raw.
