This isn't so much a gear, technique or photo-sharing thread, exclusively, so much as it is a philosophy thread. The gear, technique and photo comparisons will come up, though.

Over the years as I have lurked photography forums, "bird in flight" photography has risen to higher and higher prominence. I feel like even six or seven years ago, it was just called "birding" and if you happened to catch one in flight, that was more of a matter of luck. It still is very niche, but at least I'm starting to recognize BIF as more of a sport in its own right, like catch-and-release fly fishing is a type of sport fishing.

It's difficult to use a telephoto lens to quickly find, much less track a flying bird, it's even more difficult to get an interesting shot from a flattering angle with good lighting, it requires lots of patience in seeking out likely habitats and waiting for birds to come by, and even then, your gear needs to be top notch in order to keep up with the subject and produce a clear, sharp image. I am only now realizing how much I don't know about all this.

To the people who are BIFers here, what are some of the reasons you do BIF photography? How do you approach a photo outing? Do you just go on a hike with your camera at the ready, or do you go to a pond, river or other destination and just wait for the right shot? Do you always take your telephoto lens when you are on any kind of photo shoot and break out the telephoto when you see some interesting birds? What got you into BIF and what other kinds of photography do you do? How do you justify the expense of gear, at least at first, for something that so rarely produces a sharp, interesting, marketable photo?

I do it because it is challenging and can be really fun while snapping pics. When I get home and dump the images, it can be overwhelming, because so many are just slightly out of focus or perfectly in focus but the bird is half out of frame. even then the lens may not be able to resolve them in any good detail due to distance, being back lit, or low lighting. I try not to snipe them as they take off or land. That's way too easy. I want to capture them when they are soaring, fighting, or nabbing lunch from the air.

It is fun learning the audio cues if what birds are doing. Being able to recognize there's a bird in flight simply by the hint of sound and being able to spin around and snap off a few shots before it is gone then have those shots turn out in focus without motion blur is top notch fun. I don't play video games anymore, but this feels like a video game. It is more rewarding too.

>even at 1/2500 there's a bit of motion blur on the tip of the wings.

Birds on a power line, shot at an upward angle. Lighting is flat and lifeless. One bird partially obscured by cable, the other with its eyes obscured. You cropped so hard that the noise is 5 pixels wide. It's blurry, noisy, and the contrast is too high.

The thread was trolled to death last time. I waited a few weeks, took some photos and made it again in hopes that the trolls would leave me alone this time if I posted original content. Sadly, it was the content that incensed the trolls into a rage-fueled frenzy. There's just no winning when you allow bad people post on the same website as you.
>>
>>3323548
There is no rule against and nothing wrong with making the same thread twice if the subject is worthy of it.
>>
>>3323536
You have still not provided one (1) valid reason as to why this thread is "bait". Did OP need to put the magic world "general" in the title for you?
>>
>>3323549
>make thread about philosophy
>get mad when people disagree with you

That's just stupid. You started full of snapshits and asked stupid questions that you thought much too hard about.

Seriously, just shut the fuck up and get better.
>>
>>3323552

>>
>>3323554
What kind of an egotistical asshole do you have to be to claim that posts like >>3323376, >>3323389 or >>3323409 are "philosophy"? Just because it's words doesn't make it philosophy. You can go to a concert hall and scream profanity, but just being in a concert hall doesn't make your profanity music.
>>
>>3322669
>How do you justify the expense of gear, at least at first, for something that so rarely produces a sharp, interesting, marketable photo?

It's YOU that rarely produces a sharp, interesting, marketable photo, you shitstain. Understand this more than anything else. If you got a good shot, you wouldn't say your gear got it. You'd say YOU got it. Stop blaming your gear or you will never get better.

There's 100% of the philosophy you need. Now go get better instead of asking stupid questions on the internet.
>>
>>3323559
>, you shitstain
This is how you know you are talking philosophy.
>>
>>3323555
Can you try again without using a buzzword.
>>
>>3323561
>philosophy

Nothing in the OP was philosophical at all. It was pointing out the obvious, mindless opinions, semantics, stupid questions, and finally, questions about technique.

Mindless rambling about the meaning of "BIF" is not philosophy. It's autism. Hence it becoming an instant meme.

>when your own buzzword is buzzword which is a buzzword

>This isn't so much a gear, technique or photo-sharing thread, exclusively, so much as it is a philosophy thread.

Then you proceed to talk about gear, technique, and make photo comparisons without delving into philosophy at all, apart from this shallow mindless opinion piece:

>I feel like even six or seven years ago, it was just called "birding" and if you happened to catch one in flight, that was more of a matter of luck. It still is very niche, but at least I'm starting to recognize BIF as more of a sport in its own right, like catch-and-release fly fishing is a type of sport fishing.

OK. (?)

OK. (?)

>To the people who are BIFers here, what are some of the reasons you do BIF photography?

Why would this be of any use to you?

>How do you approach a photo outing? Do you just go on a hike with your camera at the ready, or do you go to a pond, river or other destination and just wait for the right shot? Do you always take your telephoto lens when you are on any kind of photo shoot and break out the telephoto when you see some interesting birds?

Why do you care?

>What got you into BIF and what other kinds of photography do you do?

You'll see natureguy when he's off vacation, and you used to see technical guy contribute something outside of his own thread, some circlejerking and finito. And I'm not talking about technical threads. Just look around! You've landscape thread, cars, beach, monochrome, flowers, macro, segue thread, rpt even, how many tripfags are helping in any of them? Critique? Not even posting silly snaphots, and calling them that. Who cares if it's meme thread or you see crap in it, just post few shit you've on your drive, and you'll bump an IMAGE thread, and contribute something towards not having whole board filled with actual trolling and tech nonsense. Do this occasionally, maybe start your own thematic, and this place will improve.
