How come foveon has not yet taken off? Sure it has its limitations, but it also has a lot of features that make it far superior to conventional digital cameras.

What's the deal? Does anyone on /p/ have a foveon camera?
>>
>>3337080
Well for one, you can't adapt any lenses to Sigma's proprietary mount
>>
>>3337080
I was tempted when I saw Quattros in Japan but chickened out due to low budget. I sort of regret it, Foveon seems to fit my shooting style perfectly.
>>
What are the pros and cons of foveon?
>>
Because it's a bad design. We don't need moire and aliasing solutions anymore. Current Bayer sensors are more than good enough. All these gimmicks like Foveon and xtrans are obsolete.

The problem is that the Quattro foveon gen was a fuckup, it does nothing especially well in a bulkier and less convenient package. The DP2M is a god tier camera and we'll never get it's ilk again. Sold mine because it had too much functionality overlap with my 5DII, but if could only I have just one camera and never needed to shoot video then it's what I would pick.

Pros
>rivals medium format resolution and detail
>high color accuracy
>incredible price / image quality ratio

Cons
>shit battery life
>very slow
>clunky proprietary software needed to convert RAW files
>>
>>3337185
colour accuracy is actually incredibly low in foveon. the files need a lot of massaging and very aggressive colour profiles to produce anything usable. not to mention foveon has huge problems with steep ray angles, so the colour issues aren't even global, but per-pixel.
>>
>>3337146
Pros:
>Increased resolution
>Wildly vibrant colors
>DP compacts were very powerful for their size
>they go for peanuts used

Cons:
>Anything above base ISO deteriorates quickly
>colors are far from accurate, which is a problem for portraiture. I'd rather just have the colors correct and then manipulate them in post.
>clunky, oddball feel when using. I mean just look at the DP Quattros.
>APS-C only
>Ridiculous flange distance makes it impossible to adapt lenses
>very limited native lens selection
>TERRIBLE battery life
>>
>>3337207
tbf the sd quattro solves at least some of these issues:
>Decent ergonomics
>APS-H sensor
>you can adapt m42 lenses with some success
Also adds a removable IR hot mirror so you can do easy IR. seems pretty neat.
>>
The SD Quattro shoot DNG raws too eliminating all the software diarrhea.

But I think Sigma fucked up. They should have kept the triple 100% layer design, it's what made Foveon unique, right now it's just "better" but not incredibly so. They didn't gain a lot in usability and they lost their true 100% rgb sensor.
>>
>>3337254
what gen did they eliminate the triple layer? What are they now?
>>
>>3337295
it's still triple layer, but two layers have one quarter of the pixels
>>
>>3337295
Merrills were the last with all layers full resolution.

Now the blue layer has 4 times the resolution of the green and red layers. so it's like 12.5/12.5/75 - but only resolution, it does actually detect full colour, so it's still better than bayer, it just lost that edge it had - I think it made it close to film when properly edited, it's like that last bit of data that gave you the edge, and they didn't gain much from losing that system.
>>
They should licensed and made it E-mount. Then a tons of Sony people would probably experiment with it.

Instead they kept their DLSR mount...for what is a mirrorless camera...
...And now they forced themselves to release E-mount lenses anyway, when they could have done this sooner.

It's just one wasted opportunity after another for Sigma.
>>
>>3337311
Ah that's a disappointment. I had heard such good things about them and it was neat to think that there's at least someone knocking on a different door than higher and higher res bayer sensors. A shame that Sigma sort of gimped what made it unique.

I had my eye on the sd quattro h but now I'm not so sure.
>>
>>3337360
You should still take a look at it. What I'm salty about is that the camera isn't really much more comfortable whle it did lose some of that magic.

But it is more usable compared to the merrills for sure. Especially being able to shoot in dng.
>>
Does anyone have cool Foveon photos to post here or is this thread just a waste of an imageboard?
>>
>What's the deal?
They are only usefull in a studio. Beyond iso 400 quality just falls apart.

yeah because you'll only use below ISO 400 in a studio, right?
They're landscape weapons, you have sort of limited dynamic range but it's still better than slide film.

They actually do mostly fine in most things that do not require a fast AF, except portraiture, for portraits the sensor leads to far too much skin detail to be comfortable imho.

On area where they shine is black and white, there's no better black and white camera really, and the noise issue is really limited in B&W, you can go to ISO 3200 easily even with a Merrill.

>>3337539
I have, but most are sort of over edited bw pics from when it snowed in Rome earlier this year, because I got hipsteritis and liked the fake noise.

Is that banding in the top right?
>>
>>3337564
Oh yes, it is. I probably uploaded the one I didn't fix, fuck.

Yes that's the biggest hugest Merrill problem. It bands up like a bitch.
>>

Thats such a lovely B&W, so contrasty and yet clear whilst retaining a classic feel.

I really like this style.

not a true Foveon sensor
>>

Impressive images. I wish they would make an updated version of the DP2M instead of the larger dp2 quattro.
